Could We Get a Sticky Post or Some Rules About "What Boot Should I Buy?"

This question shows up a lot. It's a valid question. Buying ski boots is expensive and daunting. You don't want to mess it up and you want advice from others with more experience. However, there's only one answer to this question: Go See a Bootfitter.

What about "my feet hurt because of ..."? The internet can't really help here. Bootfitting is a trade and a skill that is designed to help you find the perfect boots.

There are almost daily threads about this topic. Each one has the same few comments: "Go see a bootfitter," "I like boot X, but you should really see a bootfitter," "We can't determine without some more info, you should probably see a bootfitter," etc.

On the /r/skiing FAQ, there's an entire section dedicated to this question. I think it would be beneficial to everyone on this sub to include something similar as a sticky or in the sidebar. Thoughts?

What boots should I buy? The only advice you should take online about boots is to go and see a reputable bootfitter. Listen to them and buy the boots that fit your feet correctly. Not only are well fitting boots much more comfortable, but they also give you better control over your skis, the combination of this makes boots the most important part of your equipment.

Choosing a pair of boots doesn’t work like picking a pair of shoes. If you walk into a store or flick through a website and chose the pair you like the look of, you’re going to have a bad time. Each boot manufacturer has a range of boots with options for different abilities, skiing styles, sizes and foot shapes. There are subtle differences across models and brands in terms of shape, so it is crucial to find a pair of boots that are right for you. Without examining the shape of your feet and lower legs and their mechanics, as well as discussing how you ski and your ability, no one can give you a recommendation that is worth listening to. A bootfitter will do all of that and using their expertise they’ll provide you with a range of boots and help you find the best ones for you. They will also be able to help you with any pre-existing issues and injuries and modify boots if required. It is also recommended that you purchase custom moulded footbeds, along with having your liners heat moulded, they will help to optimise the fit of the boot. You also get the added security of knowing that any bootfitter worth their salt will guarantee their work, and be very willing to rectify any issues you have after you’ve skied in your new boots. Rough framework to what a bootfitter does

In Response to the demand for an All Mountain Ski Sticky Post.

This is my (very basic) suggestion for a "flowchart" guide to all-mountain skis. Including a popular ski as an example for every category. Obviously each category has a bunch more skis and most skis are in-between categories or in a whole separate category.

Suggestion welcome, I didn't put too much time into this and it is far from ideal or even functional. Mostly just want to hear peoples thoughts as to how you would approach this.

-Armada ARV 188, 106. Look Pivot 14. (New)

-Blizzard Rustler 11 186, 114. Look Pivot 14.

-Blizzard Cochise 178, 108. Marker Griffon.

-Faction Candide 2.0 178, 102. Look Pivot 12 (x2). I have an older identical pair that keep in our locker (not pictured) as rock skis. One edge was slightly delaminating and repaired but faction mailed me a brand new set, which was rad because they were years out of the warranty.

-Blizzard Cochise 172, 108. Marker Griffon. These are my old teaching skis from my days instructing at the Beav along with some Blizzard Brahma CA 173, 88s I sold, because who needs anything under 100. Use these for teaching my daughter now.

I know, I know tons of overlap here for sure, I buy and sell a ton of skis. A lot of the time I am essentially just trying skis to see what clicks, in general I cannot easily demo the skis I want to near me. I am very specific about skis and love to try new things. As for Bindings - I know what I like ;)

I will honestly probably sell 5 pairs before the end of next season.

I will say these all get skied quite a bit. Here is everything from left —> right.

183cm Blizzard Brahma (Need to mount these)
181cm Line Blade
184cm Rossignol Sender Free 100
181cm Line Sakana (may put CAST on these)
188cm WNDR Intention 110 RC - Moment Voyagers
186cm K2 Mindbender 108Ti Protos
186cm Heritage Lab AM110
190cm Dynastar M Free 112
194cm Rossignol Sender Squad
184cm K2 Reckoner 112 (will be set up for CAST)
186cm Rossignol Black Ops 118
189cm DPS Koala 119
190cm Rossignol Squad 7 (2013)
187cm Praxis Protest

Need Help Picking out next pair of Skis / Recommendations

I am 20M, around 5'10 and 160 lbs, and would say I am an advanced skier, mainly ski at local PNW mountains and occasionally go up to Whistler. I enjoy natural features and hucking cliffs, being playful and charging down the mountains here and there; not really into park and rails tho. My current rotation for the season is 180cm bent 110, 177 K2 Reckoner and a 174 Ross blackops sender. For this upcoming season, I am looking to sell either the bent 110 or the Reckoner since they are just too "fat" for where I will be skiing the most, and I am looking to upgrade to something more stable in icy conditions but still being playful.

Currently, I work for a company that offers me various deals on brands like Armada, Atomic and Salomon. I have heard a lot of mixed opinions on the ARV, but I am very interested in their new line "Antimatter" esp in that sweet, sweet 100. Salomon QST was never really considered, but I would love to hear your take on it. Atomic- wise, I don't see a point in getting rid of the 110 just to get the 100 when they are pretty much the same ski. So really is between the new Antimatter or Arv

Now I have also considered brands like Nordica and their Unleashed 98, but unfortunately I don't have a discount deal with them, but it is still in consideration.

Binding-wise, going to go with the Strive 14. I currently have girffon 13 and pivot 15 on my other skis, so I'm looking to try something new this time.

Just really can't decide between Unleashed 98 or Antimatter 100; looking to hear yall opinion

first ski recommendations for intermediate looking to progress

im 5'7, 135 lbs and intermediate trying to progress to advanced. mostly skied groomers so far, comfortable on blues and working on blacks. looking to buy my first pair of skis instead of renting

planning on skiing a lot more this season and want something that i can keep progressing on for the next few years. mainly interested in all mountain skiing, improving my carving and getting more comfortable with speed, steeps, powder and trees. also want to mess around with jumps, side hits and maybe some 180s/360s and switch, but freestyle isnt my main priority

looking for something thats playful and forgiving enough to improve on but still stable at speed, carves well and wont hold me back as i get better. ideally something that can do a bit of everything without being too specialized

not really sure what skis or waist width i should be looking at. ive considered a few around 90-100mm but open to pretty much anything. also fine with buying previous season models to save money

budget is ideally around $400-700 including bindings, but could go a little higher if its worth it

what skis would you guys recommend for my size and goals? also what length should i be looking at?

(mainly skiing SW like colorado, utah, california etc)

Playful all mountain ski for an ice coast 13 year old?

• Upvotes

My son's grown a lot this year and is around 5'9". I'm a bit shorter and I ski 174cm J Flights. He's really interested in getting a pair but he'll be moving from a 160cm sender soul pro and I'm worried that a jump that large would make things unenjoyable.

Looking for something for glade skiing progression that can still hold their own on piste and maybe get into a little back/side country. I'm thinking stick with something like a used 168cm ski kind of as a transition this year, maybe some rustler 9s or QST 94. I'm pretty sure a brand new pair at 168 is the wrong way to go as he'll probably grow out of them this season. What do you all think? Should I go straight to 174cm?

Really looking for something 94mm+ I think, we are in Northern Vermont and there have been a few days where my flights have struggled with the powder.

Black Crows Nocta. Overkill for resort?

Considering the Black Crows Nocta for my powder ski but I’m wondering if it’s too wide for a resort powder ski. They check all my boxes as far as weight, shape, and flex, but the waist width seems like it could be a bit much.

How are they on the shallower days (6 inches) and in chop?

Ski the PNW and the Wasatch. 6’2 190lb. Daily driver is ARV 106.

Stupidly worrying about punch

After all these years of searching and trying, I finally found a pair of ski boots that work for me. Everything was molded and fit for me last year with zip fits and everything. Now over the past, probably nine months of coaching, baseball and soccer for my 6 year old and doing stupid stuff as a fat person, I am going to need to get a sixth toe punch which will ending up being right below the boa dial area on my boot.

I know that the local shop which is two minutes from my work and five minutes from my local mountain can handle it and it should be no problem whatsoever but now that the season is here or I should say preseason is here and it is time to actually get the punch done I am worried that something will get screwed up. I guess this is normal but finally having the fit and feel that I want and now having to alter that is concerning.

What do you have for hauling ass on cold, icy, empty days or shredding zipperlines? See plenty of quivers for "good snow" days but not many for "snow that's good for you" days. Yes most are old.. These don't get much love. I'm usually on fun shapes too. But, I still enjoy these when conditions favor them..

Advice on Salomon Stance W84 + Atomic Redster TX110?

Thumbnail

Hello! I’m an intermediate skier who has only ever used (sometimes crappy) rentals and is finally thinking of committing and investing in my own gear to hopefully level up!

I live in a tropical country so unfortunately can only squeeze in 1 or 2 week-long ski trips a year. I’m 153cm and 52kg, and mostly only do resort skiing. Am comfortable on blues and most reds, working on improving my carving (currently a mix of carving and skidded turns especially on steeper terrain). Occasionally venture off piste but not far

Given that I can only bring one pair of skis with me each trip, would the Salomon Stance 84w, 151cm be a good all rounded ski for me? Will it be too long?

I tried looking for a pair of boots last season as well and checked out a few shops at the resort. Unfortunately none of them had boots in my size as I have very small feet (size 35 EU or size 3 UK). One shop suggested that I try to buy the newly released Atomic Redster TX110s from online and get them fitted in a shop subsequently, as they’re apparently one of the only boots currently on the market that goes down to my size(?)

It’s a pretty pricey pair of boots and I’ll have to ship them from abroad so no returns, hence I wanted to seek some other opinions and advice online before committing. I have pretty flat feet but no other standout features otherwise.

Thanks much in advance!!

Old Allsop boot holders

I have two old ski boot holders by ALLSOP. I googled, and see that this type is no longer sold anywhere except some vintage sites. I'm not a skier. Are they of any use? Just wondering if I can sell them for a few $ or just throw away.

K2 Mindbender or Black Crows atris?

I’ve read all the reviews and shortlisted two models, but now I’m stuck. Which one would fit best with 5.9 height, 200lbs skier, free-ride lover, but has to take the slopes with friends and doesn’t want to ruin their skis 😆 not very powdery snow, more like thick one most of the time.

Looking for all mountain skis for an anxious intermediate skiers

Hello everyone! My sister (age 19) has been skiing on her Volkl Flair 76 (147cm) for 4 seasons now (30 to 40 days a season), and she loves them. As she's starting to progress to easier black runs and ski in more varied snow conditions, I'm hoping to get her a pair of intermediate to advanced all mountain skis in the 80 to 90 mm range, as her birthday present next month!

I let her try my Black Pearl 88 (153cm) last end of the season, but she found them a bit too stiff and felt quite anxious on them. I wonder if it's because it's much longer than her current skis or it's just really stiff. She is about 5'2". I've been looking at the K2 Mindbender 85 and Atomic Maverick 84, as they're softer than the Black Pearl 88. However, they seem to be marketed more toward beginners.

I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for intermediate skiers looking for softer skis that will still allow them to progress. She's intimidated by stiffer skis, but I'm wondering if that's something she'll naturally grow out of as she gets more confident.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Moment Deathwish Ski Length

Need some help choosing the right ski length for the Moment DW 104s.

I’m 5’10” and 160-165lbs. Advanced skier in the PNW and typically ride a mix of trees, bumps, steeps, powder and groomers (really dependent on whatever the conditions let me ride that day). Also would use these skis to tour maybe half a dozen times or so per season.

Trying to decide between the 179cm and 184cm. Probably overthinking the decision and both would be great. I have a set of Black Crow Noctas (122mm) for deep days and currently ride ARV 106s at 180cm.

Hoping to get some insight if anyone has experience sizing up with the DW or could offer similar advice - particularly on how the ski holds up in our (lately less than ideal) conditions here on Mt.Hood.

Time to get new gear (Jacket/Pant/Bib Specifically)

Looking for advice on what ski gear you highly recommend. Primarily looking to get a new Jacket for this season, bibs will probably be next season.

The brands I have been looking at for ski jackets include Stio, H/H, Picture and Trew.

Would appreciate any advice, recommendations, or personal experiences you have had with these or other brands. Thank you for your time!

Edit:

Would be primarily resort skiing this year, but will progress to backcountry skiing in the next year.

Location: Western US (CO/WY)

Binding advice for Salomon QST 94s

Investing a pair of Salomon QST 94s 172mm, found them to be a pretty affordable all-mountain ski. I’m an intermediate to advanced skier, and wanted a pair which will last me and drive up my level comfortably.

At a hurdle though when it comes to the bindings. Didn’t want to put on the standard one on without reviewing options. I had looked at the Salomons Strive 12 GW as an option with my K2 boots, but wanted some advice and to hear thoughts, I’m not too familiar with the world of bindings.

Generally ski a mix of resort and off-piste. Any thoughts welcomed, cheers.
