Pattern Question Tips on making this a corset?? And bust problems

Thumbnail

Hi, I want to make a dress and is kind of stuck at the top. I really want a corset top and is like 85% sure on how to make this an underbust corset. So the bust will not have any boning, HOWEVER, I would like it to have two layers as well and some foam (?) in it. Idk what it is even called.

I THINK i know how to do it, but in the original pattern it says to gather the fabric at the bust. I don’t like the look of that, so I was thought it would work with a dart. It kinda works, it’s just getting that pointy tip. I also thought I could do as I did when I first sewed this pattern (it is originally a blouse), which was to kind of fold it. Idk what I did, I just did something and it worked ig. Last pictures.

So, some general information; I will sew it in a polyester satin (I know it’s bad, but I am not rich). I have already made changes to the original pattern. I just made it longer, cuz it was really cropped. I also cut the yoke into four pieces so I will have more boning channels.

My skill level is that I have NEVER worked with satin and I have made ONE dress in my life (turned out good), and TWO corsets, but they were kinda bad. My problem was that the lining and the outer fabric did not line up with eachother. HOWEVER, i am ambitious enough to think I can pull this off anyway, so I will try.

What I need help with:

  1. If I should just keep going with the darts in the bust or change it completely, and if so how I should do this.
  2. How to put the bust together with the foam sandwiched in between the lining and outer fabric and with the rest of the top.
  3. How this will look in a satin fabric?
  4. Generally tips on how to make this a corset, I know nothing about pattern making, so absolutely anything will help
  5. And honest thoughts about this project. Is it impossible??

That’s about it, and thanks in advance!!

Edit: I USED THE WRONG WORD. I dont want a corset, I just want this top with some boning in it. So more like a structured or boned bodice if that is what it is called.

Pattern Search I have eczema and want to sew everyday clothes with natural materials. anyone have any patterns?

I have chronic eczema that is EXTREMELY irritated by fabrics like polyester. My uniform for work is all polyester and **tw it left me with open sores on my body. It isn’t as bad with partially polyester clothes but it still leaves me with wounds. And it is so frustrating because I can’t find many clothes that are suitable for me at a reasonable price that are made with materials that don’t irritate my skin. These materials are cotton, wool, and linen. Basically anything natural. I sew a lot but mostly fancier or historical garments so I don’t really have any patterns for every day clothes. I like 2000s style clothes and also kind of historical inspired clothes. So yeah if you have any patterns like that please share them!

Fabric Question I need help identifying a fabric

Hi! I'm a cosplayer and sometimes like to make really structured items and have seen a lot of cosplayers use this material.

I’m looking for help identifying the fabric shown in the attached photos. I already know one of the two materials is rigilene, but the other was identified to me as “stramin.” I’ve had a really hard time finding anything online under that name, so I’m wondering if it might be called something else.

If anyone recognizes the material, could you please let me know what it’s actually called and, if possible, where I can purchase it online?

I live in NYC and work in Manhattan, so I can also visit the Garment District in person if there’s a store that carries it but would much rather purchase it online.

Any help identifying the fabric or finding a supplier would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Alter/Mend Question How to alter a fur vest?

Heyo! I recently thrifted this lovely fur vest that will work wonderfully for my Halloween outfit/costume (and as a new staple piece for my wardrobe lol) but it has a loose fit on me. The tag says small but it feels like a medium. I was looking at the seams and I’m thinking that taking in the sides would be my best bet, but it makes me wonder about the fur layer since it is attached only at the outer seams, not along any of the inside fabric.

I have no experience with sewing machines, but I sew by hand and have done some minor work on shoes and other pieces of clothing. Ex adding patches, removing/adding shirt collars with different colored thread, etc.

Project: FO Thoughts on inverted color at bottom hem?

I'm happy with the inverted color for the yoke and the sleeve hems. I'm having mixed feeling about the bottom hem being inverted. Curious about others' opinions.

ETA per auto moderator comment: Pattern used was McCall's M6044. Yokes were really short, so I added an inch at the bottom when cutting the fabric for them. The fabric is a polyester bed sheet I got at Coscto a while back (I saw it and immediately thought it would look greay as a shirt, so I just had to get it).

Pattern Search Questions About... Everything?

Hi hi!

I'm looking at getting into dress sewing (even though I'm a single male!) but I figured I get started with a project I can wear myself, a varsity jacket. Always wanted one and I have this gorgeous Elvira patch that would work on it.

Does anyone have a good, solid source for patterns (both this and dresses in general)? I've seen Mimi G in research but she seems to have a mixed-to-negative reputation, and there's a ton on Etsy.

Also, somewhat related, I have about as much space as a Great Dane in a shoebox, nowhere near enough to do this (not enough space to do anything more than play video games, really!) so I'm wondering, what sort of options do you think I should consider for sewing spaces?

There is one place near me that allows you to rent out sewing rooms but they're for 6-8 people and $140-180 a day. Community centres around me don't have anything, but there are a couple of free public libraries with sewing areas with machines! The downside is that the nearest one is 70mins away door-to-door and I don't know how quickly those areas fill up considering they're in the middle of the city.

Any thoughts or input would be deeply, deeply appreciated.
I'm a complete shut in, all I do is play video games, I really want to do something constructive and (hopefully) meet some people.

Thanks my dudes! <3

Fabric Question What fabric would you recommend for this dress?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ll be making a dress similar to this House of Cb dress for a semi formal/formal wedding using the Rose Cafe Bustier dress pattern by Daria Pattern Making. The wedding is in winter so I’m open to using a heavier fabric. I’d say I’m at an intermediate level so a fabric that is somewhat easier to work with would be great. Open to any suggestions on types of fabric and/or online shops to search. Thank you!

ETA: I forgot to mention I prefer all natural fibers or mostly natural and am willing to pay up to $30 a yard. Thank you again!

Other Question Ideas for this free tote bag I got

Post image

I got this tote bag from Knix and even though I love it, I really can't carry it around. When I was at the store shopping, the salesperson said a customer added a bikini to the photo so she can use the tote bag. While a bikini is a great idea, I wanted something more original. Anyone have any ideas on what i can sew on the photo so I can use it outside of the home?

Thanks to everyone who advised. I think it would be fun to add some pasties with tassels. I loved all the ideas and i wish that I can just do them all.

Alter/Mend Question Help fix weird gap?

Thumbnail

Hey! I’ve been getting more into hand sewing while trying to save up for a good sewing machine and right now i’m trying to work on my halloween costume. I found this beautiful dress at goodwill and I love it! The only problem is the attachable train leaves a weird triangular gap between the train and the dress itself. I want to find some sort of way to maybe connect the two or hide that gap so you can’t see it from any angle! Do you guys have any suggestions? The dress itself has a center back seam so if I need to unpick the seam to maybe connect the two pieces to the train that could work? I’m not sure… please help!!

Other Question How do you find fabric at estate sales?

Do you find that the pictures on the Internet usually show the fabric and crafts? - like I never see pictures of fabric, does that mean it's not there or it's just not worth photographing? If they don't usually show the fabric, do you just show up and hope? I don't want to waste a ton of time and gas driving all over the place.

Do you find a lot of competition for the fabric? Like do you have to be there and wait in line to be the first one in?

Do the prices vary widely?

I have been stalking estate sale listings for months now and finally found one that said they had fabric.

I wasn't able to get there until the end of the sale and all that was left was some lining, a few polyester pieces and some scraps. I picked a few things I thought I could use, but nothing really blew me away. The woman wanted $20 for it. So I got the lining - which I think is nylon and had about 2.5 yards- for $5 and put back all the scraps and polyester. Really disappointed.

Thanks in advance for your help

Pattern Question Beanbag fabric?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello all! I'm new to r/sewing ☺️ I'm in the beginning process of making a ✨️Trubbish✨️ beanbag chair!

I was curious on what type of fabric and how much of each color I should get 🤔 so far my guesstimate is 7ish yards in total.

I wanna make it soft! I was debating minky but I also worry it's toooo stretchy and the seams may rip?

And I'm also not really sure on what fabric for the inner bag for the beans.

Any info is much appreciated! 💕

And this year I'm prepared! I've been sewing gift bags for a few years (picture 2 are bags from the last years) but didn't want to leave it for the middle of december yet again.

Also pictured: The advent calendar for my son I finally finished (yes, there are more than 24 bags, so I have different sizes to chose from).

Fabrics are different cottons I collected over the last years, pattern is a simple rectangle with a drawstring (which I still have to add...).

Other Question Fabric chain garland

I am getting ready to make a chain garland using a jelly roll but I'm not sure about how to fasten each link. I see many do the Velcro, other do snaps and some with buttons.

Because we are going to be reusing this (hopefully through the years), does anyone have experience with a chain they've made and which fastener type works best over time?

(Velcro would be easier for me but if one of the other options actually does better, I'd love to know).

Thank you!

Other Question Are there any books where I can learn how to accurately draw clothes?

I've been looking online for videos on how to draw figurines and clothes, but I'd really like to have something I can reference without having to pick up my phone, as I'm too easily distracted, unfortunately.

I'm somewhat skilled in drafting my own patterns, but I would love to be able to accurately draw my designs to avoid spending time patterning and sewing up clothes I don't like.

Machine Questions Hands Free Switching from straight to zigzag stitch

I saw someone doing an embroidery technique called Richelieu on what looked like a regular sewing machine, but it clearly switches from straight stitch to zigzag totally hands free. Does anyone know what kind of machine can do that? I would find it incredibly useful in my everyday sewing of crazy pants.

I have a Brother 1034DX.
I set it up to begin a project and this is all it’s doing.
I have a 90/14 overlock new needle.
Using wooly nylon thread.
Went step by step threading.
Changed position of needle. Same result no matter what I do.
I used wooly nylon on the previous project so it’s not the thread. New needle.
Please help.

Fabric Question Christmas pajamas/flannel with severe allergies?

Hello!!! I’m trying to make a Christmas flannel shirt for a 20 year old man and a Christmas pajama set for a 2 year old child.

The only issue is… they’re extremely allergic to polyester and can only have bamboo/cotton/wool fibers in their clothing.

Where do I go about getting Christmas patterned flannel and fleece fabric that’s 100% cotton?

Any suggestions welcome! I don’t mind spending a lot of money for quality fabrics, I just want to make sure the fabrics don’t have any polyester in them 😅

Pattern Question Adding chest pockets and button holes to dress with facing?

I'm making a dress that has facing pieces on the bodice for the front opening (it shows a lot of bust the way I sew it hehe) and I want to add pockets to either side of the opening - should I sew through the facing pieces? Or sew the pockets on before I put together the dress?

Same thing with the buttons & button holes - sew through the facing? Or add these features before facing?

Thank you!

Alter/Mend Question Why do my new jeans do this?

Thumbnail
gallery
122 Upvotes

The side seam of my left jean pant leg starts off on the outside of my leg when I put them on, but after any movement it shifts to the front. If I tug it back in place it just shifts to the front again after a bit.

I figured the right leg was fine, but after seeing the pictures I notice perhaps it too is rotating to my right side? I see the inner seam of the right leg coming toward the front somewhat too. The left leg outer seam coming to the front bothers me more and is more pronounced.

What would cause jeans do this? Is it something fixable if I open them up? Ironing didn't make a difference this time.

(Forgive the inconsistent camera quality).

Other Question Altering jacket lapel piece

Thumbnail

Hello sewing peeps!

I recently purchased the Burda 5860 pattern and some really nice wool fabric, only to realize the pattern doesn't include a lining. I googled some instructions and I think I'll be able to draft that from the existing pieces.

However looking through the instructions, I am also not super sure about how the lapel is sewn on. There is going to be this point that I need to clip into, where two seams meet at the shoulder/neck area.

Since I am planning on using wool, and hoping to also add a little loop if I ever need to hang it on something else than a hanger, I am a bit dubious how well a seam like that will hold.

So, my question is, could I just separate the lapel from the front bodice piece and sew it on for some added structure, or is that a bad idea for some reason?

This will be my second coat I sew, and I consider myself intermediate, I am mostly self taught though so my knowledge on construction isn't super vast. Any help and insight greatly appreciated!

Pattern Question Help to finish a skirt so it looks nice!

• Upvotes

Hey all, Looking for some help with a few questions on sewing this skirt.

For some context, I've been sewing for a while, but I'm often doing random projects and rarely, if ever, have done anything finished well- it's more crafty stuff, etc.

For this, I spent a decent chunk of change on Spoonflower fabrics to get this. It's their Petal Signature Cotton. I'd like to make sure the skirt lasts and is finished to a higher standard than what I usually do- so that means a decent hem, a nice looking zipper, finished well internally, etc.

Here are my questions:

Waist band- afaik, I could do one of three options- zipper to top, external overlap tab with closure button (or hook), or an underlap or hidden tab closure. I've done skirts with an overlap tab before but this tends to add bulk, and I'd like to avoid that here, I think. I'll use an invisible zip which I'll practice installing on other fabrics a few times (though I have done a couple successfully before- but on pillows) Thoughts on the best option?

Panels- according to the instructions the fabric would come with 5 full panels and 2 half panels for the back zip portion. I actually have 7 full panels and 2 half panels. I can use an extra to make the skirt longer (aka I don't have to give up as much from the waistband to fit my waist, which isn't the smallest measurement). If I have too many panels it will be hard to see the cats pattern, but are there other concerns I'm missing? (instructions are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/7824270@N03/54554274468/in/photostream/)

Interfacing- this is really where I have no experience. I've seen this used around zips, in the waistband (I've used it there before- once!) and potentially on the hemline? The hem they show is really smoothly finished- what should I know about that?

I've read other threads here and can see that lining a circle skirt isn't advised give that it will mess up how it hands and spins, but how can I get a clean finish on this? I don't currently have an overlocker, but my Britannia Instyle T65 does have a few stitches that should be able to be used for the raw edges.

Again, apologies for all the questions. Sewing things like pillows and waterproof kayak covers just doesn't prepare you for finishing a dressier skirt nicely!

Thanks again for any help and fully welcome answers to questions I've not asked but should have!
