Grammar Serbian Reference Charts (improved and now in color!): 1. Cases/Genders, 2. Verbs, 3. Pronouns

I've updated all of the charts I previously posted here with a variety of new improvements, including a design pass that made everything prettier.

Thanks for all the feedback I've gotten here on r/Serbian in the past for previous versions of these charts. And special thanks to u/Dan13l_N whose extremely detailed/expert feedback has led to lots of improvements and corrections.

Click the links (not the preview images) below to see the full A4-sized PDFs.

Serbian Cases Chart (PDF)

Serbian Cases Chart, with all 7 cases, 3 genders, singular/plural, prepositions, exceptions, and more

One of the changes in the cases chart (and in all the others) is that the gender order is now masculine ➜ neuter ➜ feminine (instead of the former M ➜ F ➜ N), which enabled making some things simpler and more consistent.

Serbian Verbs Chart (PDF)

Serbian Verbs Chart, with commonly used verbs along with conjugations and rules for present, past, and future tenses

Serbian Pronouns Chart (PDF)

Serbian Pronouns Chart, with declensions, short and long forms, etc. for personal pronouns, possessive adjectives/pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and more, along with detailed grammar rules

Feedback is of course welcome! I'd also love to hear what would be most helpful to cover in future charts (e.g., prepositions, numbers and time, comparative/superlative, basic vocabulary, etc.).

Edit: I've now given these charts a home online here: Serbian language charts. I'll post any updates and future charts there as well.

Vocabulary Please translate this old gravestone

I stopped my car at a rural crossroads for a break and randomly came across a group of 3 stones. Not part of a graveyard. This one was in the best condition. I believe I can make out the date 1915? Can anyone please translate what it says to English

Resources New high-quality app for Serbian beginners/vocabulary

Hi r/Serbian, I'm a long time follower and created the Serbian grammar charts that have been pinned here for the last few years, which were built with extensive feedback and support from this community.

For the last 16 months I've been building a vocabulary-first language learning app, with a tiny team. Partly this was driven by wanting to create the best Serbian app for beginners, and for myself to use: something fun and easy that can be built into a daily habit, but that also understands the nuances and complexity of Serbian.

Sugu is the result of that journey, and of course I'd love your feedback. It supports 9 languages (with more coming), but I'll focus on Serbian here. The Serbian support was a work of love - here are some examples of how we've tried to make it great:

  • More than 1,000 practical terms (words and phrases), each with hand-drawn art that we spent 7+ months creating.
  • Native speaker pronunciation audio from a professional Serbian voice actor with a Belgrade accent and a lovely, deep voice.
  • Most terms include grammar tags and forms (cases, gender, plurals, verb tenses), and many include notes on usage and Serbian culture.
  • It includes detailed Serbian language guides/references that explain cases, gender, verb tenses, and more. I think this is some of the best material of its kind that was designed for mobile.
  • People terms (such as "friend" or "neighbor", along with occupations, nationalities, etc.) always teach both the male and female words.
  • Latin and Cyrillic alphabets.

And of course, we want to continue making things better in future versions.

Sugu is free for now, with no subscriptions and nothing to cancel. That's true for at least 2 months. We'll add subscriptions in the future, but there will always be a free version.

Right now it only supports iOS, but Android will come, along with many new features, languages, and improvements. Since there are many Russian speakers in Serbia who want to learn Serbian, I'll also mention that support for Russian as an interface language and study language is also planned for the future.

I'd love your feedback! https://sugu.now/

Resources Best way to find a Serbian teacher?

I moved to Belgrade from USA for work and I’m looking for someone who can come to my apartment a few times a week and maybe assign homework etc.

Is there an ideal website to find someone like this? Prefer in person, but also not wanting to travel to a school.

Most online material is focused on Croatian, although I somewhat realize they’re the same, and too grammar heavy IMO. I just want to learn words and sentences so I’m not a total idiot, I don’t even know English grammar it’s pointless.

P.S. Best food of my life here in Belgrade. Truly every meal is a treat. This has convinced me Americans are being poisoned.

Other Why is the letter Ѕ on the Serbian Cyrillic keyboard? Why is the letter Y on the Serbian Latin keyboard?

I have both keyboards installed, and I've noticed these respective letters exist on the keyboards despite them not actually existing in the respective alphabets for Cyrillic/Latin. So, why?

Request Learning Serbian (and making friends?)

Hey, everyone!
Let’s get straight to it.

I’m new here and the thing is, I’m moving to Serbia next year.

I don’t exactly know how to speak Serbian, but I want to learn it.

I know phrases like:

Jebem ti mater.
OR…
Slatka si!
OR…
Govno jedno.
OR…
Sladak si!
OR…
Priprema…..

I’ve been looking for resources online and that is great and all, but I was hoping to also make some Serbian friends to help me out while I learn it.

It would be really nice, because I know that practicing Serbian by myself won’t be enough (I’ve learned Norwegian — 2 years, and a bit of French and German, etc.), but if there’s anything that I’ve learned from learning new languages is that practicing it with someone is the best way to fully appreciate (well I already like the Serbian language) and understand how the language works.

Would you please send me a DM if you have some spare time on your hands and you are Serbian and you want to be friends?

Or if not, just upvote, and comment, etc.?

I would really appreciate it!

Thank you for reading~

Have a nice day!

Zdravo svima!

I'm Denis, a solo developer learning Serbian-Croatian myself. Citavuk lets you read real Serbian books and news and tap any word: you get its meaning in that exact sentence, the base form and the grammar (case, tense, person).

And it has its own tiktok which includes videos from yt shorts, instagram reels and so on.

There's also a grammar course and exercises from A1 to C1. Free, no ads, open source.

Link in the comments. Feedback is very welcome!

Si es así, ¿podrían decirme qué tan difícil es matricularse en esos estudios, qué tan difícil es estudiarlos y qué posibilidades hay de conseguir trabajo después de graduarse?

¿Qué tan difícil es convertirse en asistente o profesor en ese departamento?

Grammar Чудни називи слова у предвуковском правопису

Post image
67 Upvotes

Ово потиче из "Србске Грамматике" Илије Захаријевића, из 1847. године. (извор:https://digital.bms.rs/ebiblioteka/pageFlip/reader/index.php?type=publications&id=5350&m=2#page/8/mode/2up)

Сва остала слова очигледно носе своје старословенске називе али одакле ЋАР, ЂА и ЏИДА? Зна ли неко?

Zdravo! Ja sam programer aplikacije VocabPath za učenje jezika, koja je trenutno u zatvorenom testiranju na Google Play-u, i tražim dobrovoljne testere. Prvih 50 testera dobija Pro besplatno 2 nedelje, aktivira se automatski (~30 min posle registracije):

⚡️ Veći limiti za AI priče i vežbe razgovora
🤖 Veći limiti za AI trenera
📊 Detaljna analiza pamćenja reči i grešaka
🎯 Zadaci prilagođeni tvom nivou

Bez kartice i bez plaćanja — samo istekne posle 2 nedelje.

Unutra: čitanje i slušanje uz prave priče, pametno ponavljanje reči, AI trener i vežba razgovora. Uči nemački, engleski, španski, italijanski ili srpski.

⏳ Jedna molba: ostani u testu 2 nedelje.

https://groups.google.com/g/vocabpath-testers
2️⃣ Otvori ovaj link i pritisni „Postani tester":
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.omerenes.vocabpath

Zanima me vaše/njihovo iskustvo.
  • Ispit za C1 ima deo koji na vebsajtu zovu "Phrases and expressions", u kojem učenik mora da objasni šta znače neki izrazi ili izreke. Ozblijno mislim da mi fali znanje ovog. Da li znate neki resurs koji se fokusira na to, mislim, na česte srpske izraze? Mogu biti udžbenici, rečnici, bilo šta.

Hvala svima unapred!

Resources Conversation and grammar lessons for the Serbian language

Native speaker from Belgrade here, currently studying at the University of Philology.

I do both conversation and grammar lessons through google meet. I have a lot of experience both in teaching Serbian, as well as learning many other languages. The grammar course is completely made by me, to help a learner learn from scratch, with no AI being used in its creation.

We can also create a personalized lesson plan for whatever you need in your journey.

Discussion I tried to explain inat. Does this feel right?

Zdravo svima,

Please help me with this.

The footer of my Serbian-learning app says it was built with coffee and inat.

That’s not a joke slogan. The coffee part is literal. A lot of late nights staying awake to keep building. The inat part is why I didn’t stop when people close to me said it would never work.

I wrote a short page about what inat means to me and rewrote it a few times. I want it to feel real. It’s hard to describe that feeling; you know it when you feel it. I didn’t want it too soft, or too bitter.

Please tell me, does this feel right?
