Me and my roommate got rejected from the same bank at 2:13am last night. Same minute. I know because his phone buzzed on the arm of the couch and then mine buzzed on the coffee table like a second later and we both just looked at each other.
Context: we both had the superday last Thursday. Same analyst program, same group even, back to back time slots. He was 10am, i was 11:30. We prepped together for like three weeks. Mock interviews in the kitchen, him grilling me on walk me through a DCF while i'm trying to make pasta, the whole thing. Afterwards the HR coordinator told both of us "you'll hear back by end of week, we move fast." End of week came and went. Nothing. Monday nothing. I emailed her Tuesday and got an out of office saying she's no longer with the firm?? Like ok cool, who has my file then.
Then 2:13am. "After careful consideration we have decided to move forward with other candidates whose qualifications more closely align." Mine said Dear Candidate. His actually had his name in it, which honestly made me angrier than the rejection itself for a minute. Who is doing careful consideration at 2am. Nobody. It's a batch job somebody scheduled before they left for the weekend and forgot what timezone the server's in.
And the portal STILL says "In Review" for both of us. I checked this morning. Rejected via email, in review on the portal. Schrodinger's analyst.
Ok so that's the recruitinghell part, but here's the part i actually can't stop thinking about and kind of need to say somewhere where nobody knows me.
When i saw his phone light up and then mine, the first thing i felt was relief. Not because of the rejection obviously, that sucked, i've been at this since August. Relief that he didn't get it either. If he got it and i didn't i genuinely don't know how i would have kept living in this apartment. And he barely networked. I had a whole tracker going since early fall, analysts and associates i pulled off Recruiterbase, cold emailed probably 60 people at this bank and its competitors, got maybe 9 calls out of it, sat through every "so what made you interested in finance" coffee chat. He went to one info session and applied through the portal like a normal person. And we ended up in the exact same 2am email. Which is either really comforting or really depressing and i keep flipping between them.
But the relief thing. We were literally on the same team for three weeks. He helped me fix my story for why i switched from engineering. And the second it mattered i was rooting against him without even deciding to. I didn't say anything, we just sat there and he said "well that's fucking that" and went to bed and i sat on the couch for another hour refreshing the portal like it was going to change.
I think this process does something to you. When there's like 4 spots and 3000 applicants and nobody ever tells you WHY, you stop seeing other people as people and start seeing them as the reason you didn't get in. I hate that it got me. I'm not even a competitive person normally, i was the guy in group projects who did everyone's slides.
He's acting normal today. Made coffee, asked if i wanted some. I said yeah. I didn't tell him any of this and i'm not going to.
Is this just a me thing or does everyone in a shared recruiting cycle secretly feel this. And does anyone know if the "In Review" thing means literally anything at all or should i just stop opening the portal, because i've opened it like 6 times while typing this
