HELP REQUESTED Second guessing navy BU

I chose my Rate as a BU I’m waiting to graduate high school before I ship out July 22nd but I’m having some second thoughts and wondering if anyone can provide me with some answers

My family has been really iffy about me going and meanwhile I’m positive I wanna go they’re just worried about what if something happens to me and after my first contract going to the civilian world I come back injured or incapable of doing work in construction isn’t possible anymore, this doesn’t really seem to make sense the way I’m describing it but I mean if I go to the navy do work but then we go to war and I get injured and they have to amputate something what’s the whole point of me going to have a good career after the navy but coming back incapable of doing work in construction? Maybe I’m overthinking it but I wanna hear about peoples experiences I wanna be positive I wanna go and do this for my future. While I love working hands on and wanting to do this as a career the only part that worries me is getting injured or dying. I obviously know there’s possibilities of things like this happening, I know the government can really screw anyone over. And you know it’s not just for going into construction in the civilian life it’s also because I wanna get physically, emotionally, mentally strong and grow.

I just wanna know what’s the possibility of this happening is it really WORTH IT to go in as BU? Even tho every rate has risks

Discussion Now that I’ve been out awhile..

I know we all made fun of the guys that put Seabee stickers and shit all over their truck.
But now that I’ve been out and am nowhere near Gulfport, its kind of cool to come across someone rockin a Seabee or a beep sticker on their vehicle. It’s very rare.

HELP REQUESTED SCW PIN INSTRUCTION

Hey, I’m looking for the NAVFAC or OPNAV instruction for the SCW pin. I have a couple E3 and below who would like to enroll and actually know their stuff but our instruction hasn’t been updated since 2021 and I know there’s at least a NAVFAC or OPNAVINST from 2022. I’ve seen other battalions including ACB1 pin constructionmen their SCW so I’m trying to show in black and white that we can as well. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you

EDIT: I found a NAVFAC instruction from 2022 (a year newer than my command current instruction) where it states on page 4 requirements for E4 and below. Thank you for those who helped

Question Transfer

So I’m looking at switching from army guard to reserve Seabees. I have 3 years in and am an e4. Now, I know that’s not much but in the civilian sector I’m a state licensed contractor with 16 years experience, with much of that in project management. I also have my own construction company which has been in operation for 7 years. What rating can I expect them to come back with considering my civilian credentials?

Hi all, I recently signed a contract to join the Reserves (NAT) as a SW. I’m based in the Spokane WA area. Could anyone with experience tell me what A-school would be like, what life is like as a Seabee reservist in Spokane, what battalion I might be assigned to, any travel required etc.? Thanks a lot!

A SCHOOL What’s CM a school like?

Currently a disgruntled E5 at the end of my contract for a rate that only goes on ships. Trying to cross rate to a Sea Bee rate and I’m leaning towards CM because I love working on vehicles.

- what are things I should know about CM?
- what’s CM a school like? (Insight on fleet returnees at a school would be good too)

Update: leaning towards BU because I don’t want CM to ruin my hobby

Question I am thinking about enlisting and would like a trade

I am interested in the military and a trade

I just turned 21 and not sure what to do with my life, I have made plans to move to NC with my girlfriend. I have hobbies like firearms, boxing, and working out.

I have recently been looking at the Navy, Marine Corps and the Army. Mainly the Marine Corps because they just have a certain appeal to me.

I would like to learn a trade, I have always wanted to pick up carpentry or maybe become an electrician. I have no real pathway in life so far and feel like I am watching my life slip by and starting to get older. I have heard the Navy and Marine Corps have carpentry through the Navy Seabees and Marine Corps Combat Engineers.

If anyone is knowledgeable on these jobs and if they would be good routes to maybe shoot some guns and build stuff I would really appreciate the information and help.

Question Cross Rate from AWS

Hey yall, I’m considering cross rating from AWS to either BU, CE, or CM. I’m currently an E-6 and am wondering what people’s experiences are with each rate? How’s the quality of life? Cross rate from E-6 expectations? What are sea tour locations? What are shore tour locations? Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time.

Question Are there shorter contract lengths than 5 years for Seabees?

I'm interested in joining the military right after high school and prefer the Seabees route. However, my research shows it only comes with a 5-year contract, and I'd prefer 3 or 4 years instead. I'm also considering the Army for 12W or other 12-series MOS options.
