Looking for advice from other XMAX / Maxi scooter owners or anyone with mechanical experience, particularly regarding engine oil.
(For reference, the rebuild included a complete top-end rebuild and CVT rebuild, along with a new piston, cylinder, piston rings, valves, O2 sensor and all filters.)
After a top-end rebuild on my 2024 Yamaha XMAX 300, the workshop used regular 10W-40 oil instead of the semi-synthetic Yamalube I've always used. I then rode over 1,000 km with the bike feeling noticeably sluggish, as though something was dragging. I took it easy during the ride, but performance and fuel economy were noticeably worse. After changing back to my usual semi-synthetic oil, both improved almost immediately.
Could riding over 1,000 km on regular 10W-40 oil have caused engine damage, particularly following a top-end rebuild? I've only ever used semi-synthetic oil since purchasing the bike, so I'm a bit worried. I'm also disappointed that Yamaha would make such a seemingly simple mistake after such a significant engine repair, especially when I rely on the bike for long-distance touring.
The good news is that the official Yamaha technicians in South Africa have invited me for a full inspection next week, and I'm hoping to cover all my bases. Since the rebuild, I've also noticed several other issues:
• CVT: Louder and rougher than before while riding.
• Rear wheel: Seems to spin excessively at times when the engine is running. I've previously noticed similar behaviour with stretched clutch springs. Wouldn't expect this on brand new CVT rebuild.
• Dragging: A dragging noise when moving the bike by hand, and it seems to struggle more than usual on inclines.
• Exhaust heat: Gets extremely hot after short rides and has a strong smell. The right-side rear shock springs also get very warm. Previously, the exhaust got hot enough to burn the coating off the spring.
• Rear suspension/drivetrain: Strange noises from the rear when cruising over gentle dips, but not necessarily over harder bumps.
• ABS: The rear ABS seems to activate or buzz quite easily over small bumps.
Could the oil have caused damage, and what would you recommend asking the Yamaha technicians to check during the inspection? Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!
