Discussion - J-Mod reply Keep in mind that 99% of the people online who said "I would have tried Runescape, but now I won't" were never going to try it.

It's always the same song and dance. They will try it when MTX must be removed. When that's done, they will try it when cosmetics are removed. When that's done, they will try it when dailyscape is removed. When that's done, they will try it when the early game gets reworked. When that is actively being worked on, they will only try it if the playerbase is split for reasons. If that was done, the goalposts would shift again.

If these people were genuinely interested in Runescape, they would have either tried it already, OR they would still try it come December 2, because nothing of substance actually changed. The early game rework is still happening. The free membership trial is still happening. The only change is that the playerbase is no longer split.

If that's a dealbreaker, they were never interested in the first place.

On the bright side, there are many thousands of prospective new and returning players who don't actually care about the drama. They would try reignited with or without a split, because a new player doesn't think about economy and history. They care that the game is fun and memorable. The split is inconsequential to the success of Reignited in its early days, it only affects the long-term health of the game.

With the split gone, there will still be many thousands of new players and now the future looks good for Runescape. Doomers will say otherwise, but they will always say that regardless of what Jagex does. This game has a dedicated hater base.

Edit because people seem to misunderstand this post: I am not saying that everyone who is disappointed that Reignited is canceled is a troll or something like that. Of course there are people who are disappointed. This post is not targeted toward them. I am specifically calling out the trolls who have wanted Runescape to die since EoC launched, aka the dedicated hater base. If you're not one of those people, my post is not targeted toward you. We still welcome every new player interested in trying out the game, and we are eager to help you.

Another edit because people still don't understand the point of this post: There were trolls who knew that the RS3 community is largely against reignited. With this knowledge, they were trolling and ragebaiting. Those are the people this post calls out. This post is NOT saying that people who genuinely supported Reignited are ragebaiters and trolls. They are not targeted by this post.

Hey folks - stepping in here for a moment.

As a community manager with many years behind me, I know one thing to be true:

It is a huge mistake to assume that whole groups of people all have the same understanding, motivations and intentions for how they will engage with something.

The idea that anyone who was interested in Reignited was at best a tourist and at worst a troll is something that can cause a deeply unhealthy ongoing narrative to develop.

  • Such a narrative is based purely on assumption, not reality.
  • Such a narrative is based on hyperbole and extremes. Black and White, there is no Grey.
  • Such a narrative does not make anyone feel better about the situation. Instead, it only diminishes the viewpoint of other people and reduces them to someone that can just be handwaved away.

This is the kind of attitude that, if it continues to propagate, will turn new players who are genuinely curious about RuneScape away from the game we all know and love.

As a community, it's really important that we don't buy into the idea that anyone who is interested in Reignited or starting RuneScape is not doing so for the right reasons. There were genuinely a huge amount of people in the gaming space who were very interested in Reignited. And I'm not talking about OSRS players.

What Reignited was intended to achieve is still hugely important. We still want to grow RuneScape.

We now need you all, as individual members of this community, to do your part and help everyone thrive.

I know each of you can make this a more welcoming community for anyone, regardless of their motivations or intent to stay for a certain period of time. Everyone needs to feel welcome here and all it takes is choosing a few words of kindness and seeking to understand instead of assuming bad faith.

That will also mean that we treat each other, regardless of whether you were for or against Reignited (or any other RuneScape topic) with respect. And it also means - in a respectful manner of course - reminding those folks who do engage in hyperbole and baiting that such behaviour is neither helpful nor welcome.

Thank you for this, genuinely.

This right here, thank you Mod Anvil!

It's been a roller-coaster of emotions since Reignited was announced. I am one of the players that was genuinely excited for this when it was first announced, and while I understood the criticism of it, I really hoped there could be some kind of compromise.

Ultimately I get why it went the way it did, but trying to voice any kind of differing opinion was met with insults or people just telling you to leave. I'd never felt so unwelcome in this space before.

I really needed to read your comment here, I really needed to see this. Not because you've expressed a need for this community to help this game grow, but for level setting. I think it's easy to lose sight of what's important when anger takes over. Reading this comment made me realize I'm not innocent in this either; I should have given up sooner on arguing with folks who were obviously never in the discussion out of good faith.

With that said, I'm going to give this game a shot. Not in December, not a year from now; I'm making my account tonight! I do not want to see this game die, and I'll be damned if I'm going to be lumped in as a troll without at least taking a bite out of this game to make a name for myself!

TLDR; You've returned my faith and brought me back to earth. I'll start my account tonight.

12

u/SourceCodeT 9h ago

Hey man, just want to say we really appreciate people like you. Sorry for getting something cancelled you were exited about. I would love if there was some other idea, or compromise that could work. Maybe not now, maybe in a year or so, but something to appease new players. (Without the fracture)

But any opinion that is respectful for the game is welcome here in my opinion. For or against something I, or the next guy, loves or hates. Doesnt matter. As long as its respectful I love reading it! Because I love the game and we want to see it grow.

With that said, enjoy the game! It really is great if you give it some time and I hope you didnt lose your motivation!

5

u/why-not-rick 9h ago

Thank you for expressing this, truly. This is the energy I want to match, not down in the trenches of war where no progress is made.

While I've got you here, are there any guides or resources you would point a new player towards? I'm on the fence about making a normal account or an ironman. Any thoughts there as a new player?

4

u/technospeak Maxed 8h ago

So one thing you could do is try an iron, and if you find you don't care for it, you can convert the account to a main.

As far as guides and resources, the wiki is an excellent resource (just make sure it's the wiki and not fandom. The fandom is outdated). I'm personally not aware of good guides for a new player as it hasn't been relevant to me for a while, but Rsguy has great videos for getting into pvm. His ironman vids might be a good place to look for ideas on earlygame, but as I haven't watched those ones I can't say for certain.

What a truly refreshing comment to read. Especially nowadays it's more and more rare to see someone own up to their part in something.

Hopefully you'll enjoy RS3 as much as I have on my new RS3 iron.

My tip would be: focus on quests. There are a ton of them and many give good xp.

2

u/why-not-rick 8h ago

Sounds like a plan to me. I think I'm leaning towards making an ironman, do you think that's okay for a new account? I've read the early/mid game is lacking a little for content right now, but are there any new player guides or resources you'd recommend? I know there's the wiki, but y'all would know best I think

3

u/superfire444 8h ago edited 8h ago

I think that's totally fine. At worst you'll dislike the ironman gameplay and de-iron. Personally this is my first ironman on either game and I'm loving it. Progress feels very natural so far.

As for me I'm ~1350 total and around level 50 stats and there has been a ton of stuff to do. I mainly focus on quests (177 QP at cb 71 XD) and they helped me give guidance and progression. I still have some easy quests to do but I'm starting to run out. Quests helped me a ton with xp. Another big plus about questing is that every 25 quest points you can claim a reward at May (west of Varrock lodestone). Those rewards give 250k (or more the more qp you have) cash. Which is a nice early injection to buy gear/skill resources like shards for summoning.

As for early game lacking content, I didn't notice it. Had so much to learn and figure out - even as an OSRS veteran - that I wasn't feeling bored at all. I'd say just do whatever you want to do and don't care that much about being super efficient.

I also found it fun to figure stuff out on my own. Finding Archeology secrets has been really cool even though I don't know how to solve some of them. If I really get stuck I will look it up but for now it's fun figuring it out on my own.

I pretty much only use the wiki to look up some stuff and that's it.

Stuff to check out are:

  • Skills that aren't in OSRS like Archeology and Necromancy

  • Fort Forinthry

  • Mining and smithing (the rework is 10/10 and will give you good gear for your level). If smithing do so at the artisan workshop in falador in W70 (there will also be a ton of people).

  • Thieving is really fast and gives fantastic loot. Thieving is also AFK (you auto pickpocket but the time you can do so without being caught scales with thieving level). Pickpocketing wizard tower mages for example gave me a ton of nature and law runes while being completely afk.

  • Early on the Lumbridge catacombs have monsters that are weak to melee/range/mage depending on the monster and give pretty decent xp.

  • Probably more stuff but this was what was on my mind immediately :P You'll have to check out the game and figure it out yourself haha. There is a ton of stuff to do.

Edit: This guide will also help you get set up/started if you need help with that.

Thanks for this. The reaction from the community has been saddening. I know it is coming from a place of love for the game, but it doesn't excuse some of the toxicity I've seen. Of course there are haters and are going to be people bitter about it being cancelled, but the perspective on this is massively skewed. People just make up shadows to fight and blame.

The prospect of getting to play the game alongside a ton of new people is incredibly enticing. Just look at leagues. Giving everyone a starting line is a very different experience than "just play it now!!!"

15

u/VybeTurkey 10h ago

The reaction from some of the community. Not fair to generalize, which is what Mod Anvil was just saying.

3

u/wrymoss 6h ago

To be fair, you can logically know in your heart that the visible surface is just the loudest and most toxic component, but if you’re an external person, say a redditor, and your first exposure to the community is not the chill in game community but the people loudly and quite toxically crashing out on reddit and outright insulting anyone who disagrees, your perception of the community is unfortunately going to be based around what you’re seeing.

We as a community need to do better about shutting down things where the discussion has devolved from mere vehement disagreement (which can be strongly worded and still polite and reasonable!) to outright vitriol.

Because what I’ve been seeing the last week or so has been a lot of outright vitriol, and if I wasn’t already a player, I wouldn’t give the game a second look because of that.

•

u/Harmonex 3h ago

Another thing is that you don't need to be an external person looking in. As you said, the toxic parts are loud and visible. Meaning when you play you're going to see them even if they aren't the majority of the experience. That can be off putting for anyone. I've been here a long time and I still find plenty of reasons to turn my chat off.

14

u/ArkiusAzure 10h ago

I think it's fair to say that the reaction was pretty widespread, but I understand your point. There was reasonable discussion, it was just buried.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of social media platforms, the loudest and most dividing are pushed to the front.

5

u/Proto_bear 8h ago

A few rotten apples spoil the bunch. I've had multiple people in my life say they didn't wanna touch Runescape because of the community. I think the community does have a reputation and its not entirely unwarranted.

Based take. The announcement of Reignited during RuneFest made me feel excited for RS3 for the first time in a very long while as an OSRS player. I’m delighted to see that the RS3 side of the mod team in Jagex are able to navigate this situation with class while not demeaning either side. Can’t wait to see how things turn out-will be starting my RS3 Ironman on the weekend and am beyond excited for the journey ahead!

u/SourceCodeT 9h ago

Love to have you! I am still hoping they can come up with some idea everybody likes at the end of the road to restoration. Maybe at a time where less other games have big releases as well so we can actually kick start the reignite of new players joining :)

I 100% agree with everything you said. I think the community has shown its worst side in this whole saga. This is such a horrible look for the game and I think its going to hurt the game more than reignited ever would (Im quite positive about reignited now, i think the second iteration was great!)

It's probably too early to say at this point, but is reignited off the table for good? Is there chance you will experiment with something similar in say a year? I genuinely believe reignited is going to be massive for the game based on the hype ive seen around it, but the timing for it was wrong. Right now, it felt too rushed with RTR not completed and so many other big releases coming out in OSRS and gaming in general. I think reignited would be perfect once RTR is more complete and would love to see you guys keep the door open, just more openess with the community this time instead of just one day go like "Ye this is happening in a month"

While I don’t play RS3(barring what I played in the past, and Leagues.) I do appreciate this comment greatly. I’ve seen a lot of people that don’t realize they’re hurting their community when they need to do the opposite. A lot of people went after people that want Reignited, when they should’ve been focused on just Reignited instead.

Genuinely you may want to make a blogpost about it, because it’s a very poor look. Even my brother who was pro-RS3 community has said the RS3 community is a joke after this….

I'm very interested on what Jagex thinks of the discussion that Reignited started about the Economy. There are some obvious concerns with it that a lot of people are now seeing and would like to see if you guys agree with them or not.

9

u/WhaleBird1776 Tainted 9h ago

Truth is, MMO economies are far more complex and fragile than meets the eye. The average player has no idea what would be good or bad for it and are just going off vibes. RS3 has a rather robust economy for a 25 year old persistent game.

2

u/Ashendant 8h ago

I don't know if it has a good economy or not, but there are some people that are concerned and now I'm concerned too.

I would like to atleast see a rework on Drop Tables so they don't drop so many alchables without replacing them with gatherable materials.

5

u/WhaleBird1776 Tainted 8h ago

The economy is fine tbh. The problem is power creep. I can afk high level slayer mobs indefinitely on my main, if you balance the game around that then the mid game players suddenly have 0 reasons to grind slayer since the drop tables were all nerfed.

PvM is a skill gap issue. There are people who can do 2k zammy solo with no food and there are people who can’t even get a story mode kill. How do you balance that?

•

u/Harmonex 3h ago

I really think rolling fresh starts that continually merge into the main game could work. There'd be some economic shock at first, but I think if they were a continuous thing then the economy would adjust. Add in a way to join as a prestiged character and I think you would get engagement from long timers to help the new players find their footing.

Thank you for this, seriously!

I’ve been very disappointed in how the community has been responding lately, and keeping people in check is needed.

That being said, I would love to hear from the team what the future plans are to attract new players

I’m not going to shy away from the fact that player counts have been declining year over year. Reignited gave me hope that there would be a swath of new people starting

Now that it isn’t happening I would love to hear the new plans

10

u/Renndyt Adventuring since 2006; Linux gamer 9h ago

I have tried for years to get new players into RuneScape. I've offered my time, wealth, advice, etc. but their main gripe has always been that it's confusing. Once upon a long time ago, we had one interface. World window, chatbot, privacy strip, minimap, and the inventory/quest list/prayer list/ box part that I don't know how to name or classify. It was pretty simple with only a few windows for quest logs and whatnot.

As someone who has played the game for a very long time, I know the menus better than the back of my hand. But I do recognise that it's a big ask for new players. As a veteran, I would love to see how the early and mid game get revamped. I don't need end level content. I'm perfectly happy retrieving a kid's ball from a witch's garden.

That said, I'll still recommend new players join (but not at the expense of veterans ofc; why would I train my replacement?).

2

u/LordMimsyPorpington RuneScape Mobile 7h ago

The classic UI is a good start, but they should treat it as the default UI and continue iterating on it. The icon and chatbox look hideous and outdated, and the management windows should be a fullscreen like the mobile client.

•

u/Gotcha-Bitcrl 2h ago

Agreed, they should keep the ability to highly customise it but they need one solid UI that new players or returning players get, that makes sense. Then when they gain a better understanding of the game they can start making UI changes that suits their style of playing.

u/strawhat068 7h ago

13

u/dark1859 Completionist 11h ago

Agreed, i can't say flawless in this , but I think part of the problem is we did have a few troll accounts popped up especially early on that just kind of solidified the idea for a lot of folks that it was a majority... when, in reality, it was at best, maybe half a dozen people doing that and fanning flames

Really the whole topic as a whole was just poisonous from the start imo and not handled well. I know my clan and I are planning to make the game as inviting as possible over these next few months and beyond. And I would recommend the community to do the same.

But I would posit now is the time to show off what rs3 has jagex!

One thing this whole mess brought to light is just how much outdated, false, assumed and outright fabricated info there is about rs3 out there.. It's no wonder people don't think to try the game when half the things I hear are things that haven't existed since before necromancy launched!

That I think, would be better suited to the developer's category not just the communities is spreading the world of what the game is actually about and how its changing!

i do think sitting down with a group of both RS3 and OSRS creators combined on how to make content and promotional material for the game might be a great avenue.

just think of all the interest faux is generating at the moment.

i think a lot of it has to do about catching people at the right time and listening to both active players and potential players. Like you guys have been doing with the API update for example, a ton of people have always said they'd play the game if it had a runelite esque launcher.

it will from next week, but the next step is getting people to know about it. Its too technical to market to a general populace, but osrs creators 'trying the rs3 runelite' as a sponsored video? That could absolutely work.

I can say as someone who does some twitch streaming that it's not always the best way to get the word out but it is a way to get a lot of eyes on something!

Even if it's only once or twice a week , it would be an amazing way for you to connect with your community and get the word out there.

Maybe even do some quest overviews and minigames too!

Hell maybe I should stream some boss challenge runs myself.. sounds like a lot of fun now that I've brought it up!

But either way, there's a lot of outdated information, and I think you guys reaching out and spreading some FAQ's and general interviews would be a great way to start.

Hi Anvil. I agree with your statement 100%. That said, I can’t help but ask you to consider this same conversation with your co-workers. This being one of the first times rs3 players have actively spoken out and fought back against the statements/name calling about them, does not make it right. BUT, when you consider the pure fact that OSRS Players have actively trash talked this game in their subreddit, and ours, freely, without a mod such as yourself making a statement like this to them, it’s a bit of a double standard.

I think BOTH are blatantly wrong. But I’d like to ask you and the Jagex team, to take the exact energy you have here, and bring it to ALL the games.

Your company played a major role in the toxicity. Lack of communication, half baked ignited proposal after months of hype for “veteran” players. I still don’t see how I’m supposed to be hyped for reignited… most sane people liked new players but hate the ideas you came up with to bring in new players.

3

u/CodineGotMeTippin 6h ago

I agree, but also this isn't the full picture, if you look thru the 2 threads and the general chat on the RS discord you can see about 30 or so blatant 'agitators' blatantly ragebaiting with comments calling people tainted, saying they're happy all the MTX accounts are dying and alike.

They'd intentionally ignore peoples answers/rebuttals to then ask the same question 10 minutes later, like "how does this hurt vets" then when people give detailed answers about how it leaves the vet worlds to slowly rot out from the bottom they completely ignore that or just call you a doomposter.

They only spoke in bad faith while demanding good faith, I don't think you have the full picture, people were respectful to those that gave respect, you can go thru the chat history in the discord server and easily see this pattern.

Dear Mod Anvil

Thank you for the reply and I agree that outright harrassment is not okay from any side. The thing is, it was also your (developers) rhetoric that was problematic in Reignited or actually, rhetoric that started when RoR kicked in. I really really never liked the subtle attitude from your side how apparently RS has been a mistake all the way to Road to Restoration. I feel such attitude only grew bolder until it finaly culminated in Reignited with "Runescape as it was always meant to be", "tainted game" and all of that.

For a player of 20 years with 19 years of continuous member subscription, such attitude was incredibly discouraging because I want my love for the game to feel warranted, not being made to feel embarrassed I've loved the game in first place. I believe this rhetoric is something that should be seriously thought through. Reignited being cancelled after this intense backlash is a good step, I can give you that and I hope you understand why many of us existing players felt offended. I can say for myself at least I felt incredibly disrespected with the premise of Reignited.

I'll be honest, I think your comment, as much as it's certainly in good faith, is still condemning too much only the anti-Reignited side and nowhere enough the pro-Reignited side. Believe me, there was incredibly toxic attitude here from the pro-Reignited side as well and as you said it yourself, harrassment is never okay. Insults were hurled at us RS players just as much, labeling us as "whales", labeling us that we are here to doom the game. Where's any addressing to that? I'm not excluding your comment will even encourage that toxic attitude to emerge again.

So I'd really wish that harmony was more openly promoted by you developers. Not just at cost of us RS(3) players, at cost of everybody. I actually think RS and OSRS need to be promoted together and any bad faith between communities actively discouraged by you guys. I feel that is really lacking from your side.

Again, I appreciate you promoting good faith in your comment but I hope you also see where the damage was done in first place.

A technically adept Mod could have come out in a smaller announcement and called them “experimental worlds.” There was no reason to make this big announcement that we would all be delving in as lvl 3’s, and then, as we’ve gone deaf from panic, start saying something about statues and commemoration.

Any considerations for fresh start worlds instead? The main RS3 players complaint is that it’d split the community.

You guys seem to think new players care about all of the historic MTX and imo you completely missed the mark there. They don’t care. Existing players you hoped would return cared about MTX and most of them that would have potentially returned went to OSRS so you were trying to steal players from yourself.

New players want the fresh MMO experience. Fresh start worlds achieve that. It also solves the player base split issue since the populations would eventually merge. Preferably fresh start worlds would happen on cycles to where they are not a one off thing but happen every year or two.

Please post this in the OSRS sub too. They 💩 talk our game nonstop.

4

u/SeaBootsOSRS 10h ago

I wish this was required reading before posting in this subreddit.

7

u/integrationlead 10h ago

With all due respect, OSRS popped at 70k concurrent in the first 2 months, then cratered to 10k concurrent. It took over 4 years to get back to 40k concurrent.

Why was the option to do the last ditch effort of a restart taken after just 10 months of Road to Restoration? OSRS had 4 years to find it's feet. Why do we not get the same treatment?

At the same time you'd be competing with WoW Forever and GTA 6. Was this even considered?

My response is the same as I'd give my mom when arguing with one of her sisters: you're hoping to appeal to me because you know I'm the sensible one.

I'm happy with any new players, try to welcome and help, etc., but when it's people who are over-hating, over-meming on not only the game as-was/as-is but also the playerbase in terms with context and dogwhistles that are borderline (and sometimes overtly) discriminatory, I draw the line.

10

u/SourceCodeT 9h ago

I would love some form of incentive that makes new players join. Wasnt a fan of reignited as proposed due to the split. Their teasers about a big new thing that would make people join was why I was looking forward to runefest. The roadmap as well but mainly that 'thing' that would make people join.

I was dissapointed but was open to it with some changes etc.

However the discourse after the cancel from some of the people that wanted it is really hurtful.

Telling us we want rs3 to die, laughing in this sub about declining playerbase, stuff like that. Most of the time I am very open to any discussion, but for me those people can really just leave. I wouldnt bat an eye if that means we have 1k less players because those types didnt join.

1

u/Sophiaphage Taintscape Historian 9h ago

Same. But just have a look at the disgusting comments on the X post. If that's the playerbase we're cultivating, I'm out

3

u/SourceCodeT 9h ago

Ye true. Some people are really unreasonable. But thats a general experience I have with X or facebook. Discourse is mainly just trolls from every side. I try to just ignore those.

In game most clans are very chill so thats the actual player base we should measure against.

Honestly, from the perspective of a lapsed player, I think the damage has already been done. I’ve played on and off since 2006 and had a comped main account and nearly maxed iron.

The mtx and controversial updates over the years made me slowly fall out of love with the game, but reignited really made me excited to make RS my main game again. The reaction from the community has made me never want to be a part of this community again, and the whiplash from Jagex’s decision making has made me untrustworthy of any future announcements.

How could I trust an announcement when two weeks later you might just change your mind and cancel it entirely? This goes for either side of the spectrum too, by the way. After this cancellation, is there really any guarantee this community ends up seeing half of the 2027 roadmap?

There’s an entire other topic of how many bosses and activities have been ‘Game Healthed’ over the past couple of years, that veterans and irons were able to farm and abuse for years before action was taken.

I could go on and on, but there’s not really a point. I just wanted to give my opinion and feedback because I love RuneScape and I was genuinely excited for Reignited.

To any genuinely new RuneScape players, I think the game is in a pretty good spot and you will have a great time! But from a lapsed player perspective, I have no interest in coming back to the game anymore.

•

u/InternalIncident2 2h ago

what does 'Game Healthed' mean?

5

u/Front-Vacation-884 8h ago

actually if all this situation tells something, it tells that Jagex listens to their players. That's a win in my book

8

u/ironreddeath 9h ago

The problem is that the supposed support came at the expense of, intentionally or not, the veterans and once that was no longer a thing these people suddenly couldn't care less about the game. That makes the kind of comments that you are talking about feel justified. If your interest in the game only exists when the proposal hurts veterans, you don't have an interest in the game, you have an interest in hurting the veterans.

This was sort of Jagex's fault. If they didn't fracture the community, intentionally or not;, didn't hype the announcement up so much and claim it will makes both new players and veterans happy, and didn't then announce it at the end of Runefest with a one two punch of RS4 coming in the nearish future, this whole thing wouldn't have happened.

Now that reignited has been rightfully cancelled, and we have a much better option in the free membership event, which should become a new standard and replace DXP weekends IMO, the discussion needs to be attracting new players, not shaming veterans who felt, rightfully, that they were being sacrificed for a slim chance that new players would flood the game.

Jagex needs to do a lot of work, ask the community for opinions and help, and actually promote the game. I laid out some ideas here before the cancellation announcement, but I would love if we got some sort of roadmap about a proper revitalization project to reignite people's love for the game while bringing in new players. However when and if that roadmap comes out, actually ask the players this time, and for the love of Guthix, bring back polling so we can prevent you from making another blunder like reignited.

6

u/Rendonsmug 11h ago

I meam, your company's announcement pitted the interests of different groups against each other at a deep and fundamental level. Of course that breeds resentment and toxicity.

2

u/TheGreatDudebino Ironman 10h ago

The resentment and toxicity really came from one side and that's coming from someone who was stuck in the middle for the most part.

4

u/Golden_Hour1 9h ago

Ok yeah, but can we call a spade a spade here? There was and is a LOT of trolling and a LOT of tourists projecting a fantasy onto reignited and not actually understanding what its design would have done. Everybody wants new players, and the Runescape community is very welcoming to them, but many in the reignited crowd are acting like anything less than reignited is just spitting in the face of new players, which is insane.

2

u/Choice-Kitchen2494 11h ago

tbf, this spawns from the company not doing a wide poll AND not divulging the supposed surveys and what they said would be supportive of the mode. we sit with little to no understanding why jagex is pushing for these options. and its entirely jagex' fault.

You want these uninformed tribalism moments to end, start being transparent. I am beyond aware of your meta-cognitive (the companies) outlook on players. We are smart enough to both make irrational and rational arguments and discourses.

You MUST do your part to enable these conversations by not being secretive with information. I cannot stress this enough, this entire problem, reignite, backlash and uninformed awful rhetoric, is entirely jagex caused.

1

u/tane_rs 8h ago

This is great perspective to have. Though I do wish the same messaging could be directed to the general osrs community. Many of them are incredibly negative about and downright mean to anything or anyone rs3 related and it drives the same wedge deeper between communities.

3

You clearly missed the actual trolls that were attacking the community, Anvil. There were quite a few.

Not to mention that the drama was literally manufactured by you guys, yet now you believe you can scold the community for being upset.

I truly believe that if you guys didn't refer to your actual playerbase as tainted, this situation wouldn't have been so heavily capitalized by trolls. Being mad over a "tourists" or "trolls" debate is ridiculous based on Jagex's own actions.

Truthfully, your own words can be used against you there. You know, since Jagex employees calling the game 'tainted' live on stage explicitly suggests that all the current players are 'tainted'.

It's like Jagex needs to listen to their own advice.

8

u/Golden_Hour1 9h ago

Yeah a thousand times this. Jagex were so happy before the backlash to just sideline us in favor of these new players and not give a damn but now we have to just suck it up and let these bad actors hang around now that they rightfully realized it was a bad idea?

Fuck that

1

u/Designer-Disastrous 12h ago

As someone that was genuinely interested in reignited and that hates that it got cancelled i genuinely applaud you for posting this as a mod. However the damage is done, the community is toxic and i really dont want to try this game again since the thing i got hyped for is gone

1

u/Phatkez 9h ago

Please prove these statements with stats. I just don't believe that this project would've brought back enough players vs the damage it would've done to the existing playerbase, to be worthwhile.

6

u/AuronTheWise 8h ago

I mean that is obviously not the case, and Jagex admitted as much when they cancelled it.

If the stats showed evidence the positives overwhelmed the negatives they would have gone through with it.

2

u/Adamantaimai 7h ago

What stats? It's not possible to measure the impact of something that was canceled before release.

You need to let people speak for themselves, it doesn't help the discussion whatsoever to be dismissive and claim to know what others were going to do better than they do.

There's never a guarantee that a new player will stick around in any game, regardless of the circumstance of them joining. That's why getting as many people through the door as possible is important. Some will leave and some will stay, that's literally how games operate to begin with.

u/Not_Uraby 11h ago

Yeah the bigger issue is that it was a giant “fuck you” to the current playerbase. I play RS because my progress is permanent - I’ve been playing for 20 years and everything I do in game accumulates. Reignited proposed to take that away, to remove the permanence of progress for the first time in the game’s history.

If they went through with launching Reignited, I would not have renewed my membership. I play on 3 member accounts, and my membership has never lapsed since I started. How many of these new players are needed to make up for losing me, keeping in mind that only some of them will stay long term? 20? 30? 40? Now think of how many of the current playerbase feels just like I do.

Not only that, but they’d lose word of mouth advertising. All my friends know I play RS, I’m the guy that plays it. If they ever thought about playing, they’d message me about it. What do you think happens when they message me about trying it and I reply with “oh, I quit. I felt betrayed by Jagex and no longer play.” Even without dragging the game at all just the fact that something was bad enough to make ME quit after 20 years would be a huge red flag.

I don't like this take. Yes, not everyone who's immediately interested will try the game, and not everyone who tries it will become a lifelong player. This is true of every marketing or incentive scheme.
Reignited might've been Jagex's most successful attempt to generate new interest in RS3.

It's also true that Reignited would've been devastating to veteran accounts.

These truths aren't mutually exclusive.

99% of vets who said they'd quit wouldnt have.

See I too can make up numbers that are meaningless and cant be proven or verified.

At the end of the day RS3 is in decline, Jagex is trying to bring in new blood to keep the lights on. Reignited would have been a massive ad campaign that brought in tens of thousands of new and returning folks. Yes many of them would quit in the coming months but it may have brought in enough to be an improvement.

Vets freaked not wanting to be left on dead worlds that would eventually die off. What do you think is going to happen when the population continues to decline?

You saying 99% wouldnt try it is no different from me saying 99% of vets wouldnt quit. Its a personal opinion that has no real backing and for all intents and purposes doesnt exist.

Wife and I were interested about a fresh start with tons of new players trying the game all at the same time. Now... we're not. The cool new thing is no longer cool and new. Its an old game with 0 folks in the new areas, massive inflation, and a insanely top heavy player base.

There are other options that are more appealing.

I don't believe restarting the economy would really change anything. It would give people like a month window to get in but the gap in wealth and skills will be a crazy amount within just the month. People that play crazy hours or are super skilled for efficienct bosses are gonna just reach the top again. New players are just gonna be in the same position as they would be of they started now lol. It might give a very few players an opportunity but majority of people it wouldn't change a thing. Just my thoughts. Theae people that think things resetting means they can be on the top have no idea.

3

u/Apprehensive-Gur205 11h ago

The economy reset isnt about wealth, it is about being one noob in a wave of other noobs experiencing the reignited servers.

6

u/pcpxtc 11h ago

Yeah i guess you'll get about a month or 2 of the less active players redoing all the low level stuff on their way to end game while all the crazy players will be at end game in less than a month. So i guess youll have a little bit of time doing all the low level and mid level grinds with some people again but it wont last long. My thoughts at least.

This is just not true though. This just seem like a way to dismiss the interest as dishonest and never real in the first place, rather than a true assessment.

It bundles a bunch of people that have different demands (or multiple demands at once) as the same exact crowd. There have been people trying the game at each of those steps. Though the news of some of those would hardly break containment and reach outside crowds.

Plus all those things (MTX removal, cosmetic toggles, dailyscape rework, early game rework) are just strictly good things that make the game better regardless.

If that's a dealbreaker, they were never interested in the first place.

Why wouldn't they be?

because a new player doesn't think about economy and history

Why wouldn't they care? If anything history and reputation is one of the few things players can use to judge a game.

It genuinely feels like people are completely uninterested in putting themselves in other peoples shoes. Of course people are interested in getting in on the ground floor of a fresh set of servers, that happens all the time with other games! It would be a shared sense of experience you're not getting by joining a matured long term playerbase. The idea that there is no difference seem more like an attempt to convince yourself, or think everyone care and interact with games the exact same way.

I can't blame new players for not wanting to join a game with bad reputation, or that had a mechanic they dislike. I'll never join a gacha game regardless of how good the game is, because I find gacha inherently distasteful. There are hundreds of other games I'd rather play. I don't think I'd join RS3 if I was a fresh player without any history with the game looking from the outside, precisely because of its history I think it would be a complete nonstarter. If I was in that situation, reignited would be one of very few things that would make me reconsider said stance.

6

u/_Vuragado_ 14h ago

This is a nihilistic and defeatist take that has plagued your vision as a long term veteran. Every marketing push and item like this knows that they won't get everyone, but that they will get some percentage of those players to try and then a fraction of that percentage of people to stick around.

2

u/YoungPrimary8288 10h ago

When osrs players specifically stated they only want reignited to spite the vet players, it creates a negative narrative from the get go and makes any arguments about it irrelevant. I've seen more than a handful of this exact scenario taking place.

50

u/Ddrago98 16h ago

As most of them were saying, they were playing reignited because it was a fresh start event, not because it was rs3. They’re only interested in the spectacle involved in that and nothing else, and most would leave in less than 3 months

22

u/LupiAcubens 15h ago

That's kinda how new player retention works tho. most people who start a game don't persist. Dragonwilds sold 1.3 million copies and has an all time peak of 52k players (and 9k concurrent in last 24 hours) MMO's should be measurably above that ratio, but the principle stands that most people who join will leave, the important thing is people keep joining and over time the player base grows.

10

u/WobblyBits_X 15h ago

That's kinda how new player retention works tho

And that's why all the vets were opposed to it, because it was trying to draw in a notoriously flaky wave of new players at the expense of the certain existing players. Some would've stayed for sure, but the whole concept was damaging to the social fabric of the game.

10

u/LupiAcubens 15h ago

I understand, but equally in the last year concurrent player counts for RS3 have dropped by 50%, without new players this game will die. sooner or later they'll just shut it all down and call it a day because it isn't worth keeping online. And once all these vets have had their celebrations many will go back into hibernation never to touch the game again because they've done everything.

Jagex has to do something, and they made a very big hail mary to try something and the community shot it down. what happens now is on the community.

I saw quite a few people saying they quit around EoC or the introduction of the Squeal of Fortune, claiming they have been waiting for MTX to be removed to pick up the game again, but they were claiming that Reignited was "not enough" and that the "only way" to "fix" RS3 was to just "full wipe everything after Squeal of Fortune was introduced" which is an insane take.

These guys will be unhappy with the state of the game until all of the controversial decisions in the past decade or more (e.g. EoC, Wilderness Changes, Duel Arena, etc.) are reversed and most of major changes since are deleted, or until the game goes under because I suspect they actually just despise what RS3 has become.

5

u/bird95 15h ago

Okay, but if it managed to get enough people to try it, enough content creators to join in, and enough people praising the recent updates, then a decent percentage of those people might have stuck around.

It's similar sample stations at grocery stores. Companies know that the majority of people are just interested in getting some free stuff and the novelty of a new weird product with no intent to actually follow through on buying it but they still set up sample stations and manage to get enough interest that the minority of people that actually do make the purchase is large enough to more than justify the initial losses from the freebies.

It's basic marketing and RuneScape needs something like that to turn around the decline in playerbase. A 10 day free trial isn't enough, but that spectacle that they've now cancelled definitely would have been.

7

u/UserNotFoundAnywhere Slayer 15h ago

Then the game just needs a better f2p experience, I think that they can make a better spectacle than dividing their audience.

2

u/crazyb3ast 5h ago

Yup just look like guild wars or final fantasy. Through the years, they made old expansions free for f2p to experience. Meanwhile, rs3 f2p experience has largely remain the same.

4

u/YouCouldButWhyTho 15h ago

That’s how you get new players. Idk what people really think causes new players to happen but having events or influx is How You Generate New Players.

Even if only 5% of the players who came in on an event stuck around That’s Still Valuable.

Honestly jagex needs to grow a spine and not fear biased redditors who have never worked a day in their life in social engineering space.

2

u/ezaroo1 15h ago

If the two account types are totally separate and can’t interact, then 5% sticking around is actively bad for everyone.

That was the problem we had with it.

If reignited did really good and attracted enough new players to reach 80% of current vet concurrent player counts, that would be huge.

But then what happens?

Probably 5-15% of current players decide to try out reignited.

So reignited goes to about 95% of current concurrent players and main RS drops to about 85% of current concurrent players.

Cool, now both versions of the game are worse.

But it gets better, if we have a decline in those reignited players over the first 6 months and lose 30% now we have the main game with still 85% of its previous players and reignited with 65%.

Both versions are notably less populated than RS3 was before it, but hey jagex is making more money.

And now that fresh MMO paint smell has worn off and all those who only joined for the new MMO level rush will start quitting.

And ok what if like you say 5% of reignited people hang around, you had 15% of rs3 main players swap, let’s assume none of them quit.

Well then in a year or so you’ll have reignited player counts of about 20% of what RS3 has now.

That’s no where near a sustainable economy, they’ll need to merge.

And if no one quit at all during that time period after the merge we’ll have a 105% of current players left.

That sounds amazing!

But, to get there you’d need no one to quit from playing a game that has a worse economy, less players and is being forced through an active community split and controversy that they warned about before it even started.

Do you really think no one would quit? I don’t.

A lot of people would quit, so after a year you’d end up with even less players than we have now, but sure 5% of them would be new.

What a win, we’ve traded 100% for 80%

Fucking wonderful.

5

u/YouCouldButWhyTho 15h ago

I agree reignited as proposed was not how to handle things. No argument there on the segregation. I get that totally.

But the way that new players general excitement around the idea of Some reason to return is getting unfairly stomped on because “they wouldn’t stick around anyway” or “they just don’t get the game”.  That’s more the lines I’m responding to.

2

u/ezaroo1 14h ago

Yeah I agree, jagex handled this like that time Michael Jackson dangled a baby off a balcony. There was absolutely no winning, they announced it like it was the best idea they ever had, as the crowning update of the next year.

It’s like not a single moment of introspection went into any of it.

But you can’t be mad at current players for celebrating their game not getting arse fucked by a rusty pipe without lube.

What should have happened is jagex standing on that stage and saying “we’ve heard calls for a fresh start for rs3, people are interested in the game and we want to explore how to give that to them while maintaining our current community and aiming to add those new players. As such, over the next 6 months we’re going to propose some options to current players and continue our market research to see if we can find a version that works for everyone and makes our game the game we know it can be.”

And people would have been hyped, current players would be nervous but would have trust that this wasn’t being forced on them and the version decided one would be good for everyone.

Instead we got this shit, and now any concept like reignited even with a serve merge and fixing all the real problems is dead on arrival and not worth the time.

And we’ve got threads like this that has a bunch of gloaters on one side and a bunch of trolls on the other side still fighting.

All the while some real people did want to try the game, and have probably been put off by all this.

Not the ones just chasing fresh MMO experiences, they wouldn’t have hung around, but there will be a small group who would have enjoyed the game long term and a portion of them probably have been put off by this.

We can still bring in a lot of those players though with the right community action and the right action from jagex around marketing and messaging.

Not everyone who said they would try it would have ended up doing so. Not everyone who did try it would stay.

Reignited was an opportunity to present the game in a new light to a new audience, and the current audience completely destroyed any chance of that happening with their negativity and childish posts like this that paints everyone who was interested in a fresh start event as trolls, liars, or evil conspirators who only wanted to ruin your accounts.

I don't wish anything negative on the playerbase, but sometimes it genuinely seems like they don't wish anything positive on themselves.

Have you seen this subreddit? No one will let it rest.

Hundreds of these players OPs talking about making post after post and comment after comment “HAHA YOU KILLED YOUR GAME”

“Me and my girlfriend planned a 2 week vacation to play reignited and now it’s ruined”

OP has a point

A few of my friends were going to give it a go f2p when Reignited came out. Now that it's cancelled, they are going to try it (me with a new char) once our current Valheim playthrough is done.

I did try it, downloaded last week and played for several days. It is a ghost town for new players.

I've decided to try it because reignited got cancelled, reignited kinda put the idea back into my head and then it being cancelled made me think I may as well give it a go now that they'll be putting more resources towards it

I feel like you are intentionally ignoring that they also killed the FSW, the most exciting part of Reignited. A big rush of day 1 people all racing to endgame.

But I thought there was going to be so many new players joining reignited that veteran accounts would be worthless?

3

It doesn't matter either way because it's a lose-lose situation regardless.

Reignited is successful = old players get left behind

Reignited is not successful = nothing meaningful changed

Legitimately have played RuneScape on and off for twenty years, just came back to osrs after like 5 years and loving it. Saw reignited was happening and decided to finally give rs3 a try and even had a few buds who never touched any rs who were willing to join me. Now they're playing osrs with me. They figured if it's not a fresh start why not stick with the version people seem to prefer.

4

u/Blopbloops 15h ago

I will add I think it was a wild choice to do in the first place and don't think I would like if they tried the same thing with osrs, but I think announcing it then canceling it is just a good way to lose the max amount of current players and potential players.

Being dismissive like this comes off as toxic, and only drives away more potential new players. You can be appreciative of the rollback, and still accomodatiing to people whos feeling were hurt and expectations not met.

Now is the time to try and convince those players why we think they should still come give it a try on Dec 2nd, use that membership trial and give it a go.

We are better than this, dont feed the fire.

11

u/ewgrooss 14h ago

Jagex should have focused on promoting the positives of the game and its current state. Instead they focused on the negatives, including veteran accounts as a negative, and marketed reignited as a world without that. I don’t blame anyone who was excited for the update, I blame Jagex once again putting their head so far up their own ass instead of communicating and working with the community.

Posts like these just come across as toxic imo and this way of thinking is just as bad as the people who were spreading the thoughts of reignited needs to happen and veterans should just accept it because it will save the game.

both sides of all the arguments for and against reignited were based on maybes and if's could reignited have saved Runescape and made it popular af? Maybe, could it have turned out badly and with the damage done left things in a worse position.. also plausible.

Was it unfair on older players? Yes 100%, Was cancelling Reignited unfair on potential newer players who wanted to play Yes 100%.

At the end of the day going on and on about this is pointless because Reignited was a decision that had clear winners and losers and even then to which degree was .....highly unpredictable.

We don't know what you are claiming is true it could go either way.
Don't sink to the levels of people posting shit like "Now Rs3 dies" , " good job vets you killed your own game" etc it honestly just pushes people away and us look just as bad.

Encourage people to play as even without reignited many of the reason to play still exist but outside of that we really need to stop trying to turn this into a whole gotcha of sorts.

Some may disagree on my take here fair enough but i'm sick of it, it's cancelled we should move past it all and focus on the updates that we are getting lol

I don't think these people were lying outright but I do believe that their eyes are bigger than their stomachs and when it comes down to it the vast majority would stick to the MMO they already play.

9

u/LoLReiver 15h ago

The vast majority of new players to any game will quit long before they put in thousands of hours.

But there isn't some magic secret to attract players that will stick that long. Those players are just the survivors from a horde of short term players.

Posts like this are incredibly frustrating to the point I need to say something. I am a person who was excited to come back. I am a veteran player. I was going to play it again and had full plans to continue playing. I was trying to gather a group of people to play it again. I have (had) a comp cape. I am 100% glad and willing to 'throw' it all away and start fresh. Why?

Because I actually enjoyed playing the game.

I didn't enjoy the constant monetization of every single skill from MTX. I know the sheer amount of abuse that took place from MTX. I know the history of the economy and how many dupes and exploits and bullshit that took place that's degraded its integrity. If I didn't love Runescape I wouldn't still be following the subreddit after all these years. I wouldn't have been part of the closed beta test for Dragonwilds and tried to give as much feedback as possible.

I wanted to see Runescape came back in its full glory, untainted from years of abuse it has taken. I had no issues starting fresh as I genuinely enjoy the game. The early game is still part of the game, and arguably the more fun part than farming Telos and Raksha (shows when I last played) for hours and hours on end. If you genuinely loved Runescape you should love the beginning as well.

At this point I won't be returning. I'll stick with Dragonwilds for now until RS4 can release. I struggled to get into OSRS, not sure why but for me RS3 had hit its peak in the 2011-2012 era, just before EOC. I know SOF was there for 2012, but the level of damage MTX had done at that point was still fixable and I had hoped things would change. At this point it seems like the damage will be permanent.

0

u/timeshifter_ Maxed/20y cape 13h ago

lol you are exactly the person the OP is talking about. MTX got removed. Dailyscape got severely cut down. The early game is getting reworked.

SO LOG IN AND PLAY

Reignited would have changed nothing for you. You are still more than able to start a new account and play a full character with no MTX. If you want to play, shut up and play. Stop making excuses, exactly like the OP said you do.

4

u/Upbeat-Improvement85 RuneScape 20 year old account 13h ago

The community voted for bonus xp to stay. I personally don’t think that should stop people from joining, but if that is an issue to them then who am I to say it’s not valid.

2

u/leahky 13h ago

the community didn't vote for that lol, jagex says players asked for it in one survey they ran once. i can 1000000% guarantee you if it got polled it'd be removed tomorrow.

4

u/TheLordOfEvil 13h ago

Where in my post did I complain about dailyscape or the early game? I explicitly even said I enjoy the early game. I never had an issue with any of those and misses the point entirely. If your house caught on fire and burned down, you can't just point at it and say "look it's no longer on fire now you can go back inside", that doesn't fix the damage that was done.

I have plenty of games to play so why would I return in its current state. Maybe if they can fix the damage with R2R I'll take another look, but the largest repair just got cancelled.

3

u/HalfLegitimate8660 11h ago

Actually a lot changes for people like them and new players.

Imagine coming to RuneScape loging in for the first time, just fresh off tutorial island in lumbridge.

You see a beautiful world, some goblins a huge castle, trees, fishing spots and so much more. After a short while you notice that all the people around you have been npcs and you haven’t seen a single other player around. Unless you know where the hotspots in the game are you won’t find a single soul just out there in the early game.

With fresh start worlds you will be able to chat to people, explore with them or just not feel lonely while you are out there exploring gielinor.

The social aspect plays a major role in if someone is actually going to stick around or dip in just a couple of hours.

"I was going to try it, but now I'm not. Because I'll never be comfortable not knowing if I'm talking to someone who paid for exp, and that doesn't sit well with me. I don't want to talk to people who bought MTX."

Was a dead serious reply someone had to why they won't play. The psychosis of these people needs to be studied.

u/aruselordred 14h ago

I’ll admit I logged back into my OG account from early 2000s and was so put off by everything that I just logged back out. Too much going on. Also my osrs membership doesn’t let me play an rs3 char?

6

u/NoInternet1920 14h ago

It does, you just can’t be logged into both on the same character. It’s one of the major reasons I don’t play rs3 outside of leagues.

2

u/korruh 14h ago

OSRS membership counts as RS3 membership so idk what you're doing - did you use jagex launcher?

2

u/Able-Corgi-3985 12h ago

He is probably talking about the fact you can't simultaneously log into both OSRS and RS3 at the same time which is a real and fair criticism people have.

Most criticisms around needing to pay for multiple characters are fair and only exist for Jagex profit margins.

My favourite part of these discussions is how the community will tell us that the players interested in reignited won't last more than 10 hours, but are encouraging them to try the main game. Why do you care if they try the main game if you're adamant they won't last more than 10 hours?

10 hours is not long enough to form any opinions, 10 days however you can get quite deep in the fun of it.

2

u/cleidom 13h ago

I think it's a bit more complex than that. I think there are people who don't play rs3 who genuinely wanted to try it because they just hate rs3 so much that they liked the backlash. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

What they don't understand is that reignite was barely going to change the experience for a couple of months if at all, and then it's basically the same game but even more divided than ever. And this divide has really opened my eyes to a lot of issues with this game and with my approach to it.

This game can very easily turn anyone into a mindless hungry gamblers. Sick of our wins meaning nothing. Hooked by the low cost of entry. Angry at the neighbor who we envy.

I am personally ok with how all this has turned out because my approach to the game has shifted. I think I'll just play every couple of months if the story looks like it's on a good direction. I honestly feel like the world building in rs3 is amazing and witty and a part of myself. It just sucks that in order for this to keep being sustainable, they need to milk off the human addictive personality. It sucks that games just can't be games. Gaming in general has been dying and we're all just aggressively coping with it. I'll continue to enjoy it until there's nothing else to enjoy and will invest my time in enjoying the next thing that comes along.

4

u/golden_bear_2016 16h ago

On the bright side, there are many thousands of prospective new and returning players who don't actually care about the drama

Literally almost no one new has been coming to RS3, this is straight from Jagex.

There's a reason why there was a push for Reignited, they know the numbers, and they don't look good.

And for sure no one new will be coming now after this debacle by the veteran players.

Don't dismiss and harass new players and then ask why your game is in maintenance mode two years from now.

He was never going to play. He's just full of shit. A gaming tourist.

I’m an osrs player who was excited to try the game for the first time when reignited released. I still would like to try it at some point, but it was the extra hype of new game mode/fresh servers that motivated me to make it a priority. Not sure when I’ll get to it now.
