COOL VIDS 📹 Anyone else feel Brittany Howard is extremely underrated as a vocalist?

Her voice is very unique and her songwriting and guitar skills are great too. I feel like she’s very under appreciated. Any other fans here?

DISCUSSION 💭 I feel like even the most skilled R&B vocalists these days are missing something for me.

Don't get me wrong, I think Tori Kelly, Durand Bernarr (actual beast), Yebba, Gene Noble, etc. are all incredible vocalists but their voices don't affect me in the same way that Mariah, Whitney, Aretha, Luther, MJB's, and Donny Hathaway's voices move me so much, they can all give me goosebumps and bring me to tears. They all have such exquisite tones and convey so much emotion with their voices. It's not that the newer vocalists are bad by any stretch at all but I am just not moved in the same way. I can think of one exception to this for me: Cleo Sol.

The closest that it gets to that, for me, would be Keke Wyatt, Le'Andria Johnson, and Jazmine Sullivan, all of whom are, to me, mind blowing vocalists, but they have all been around for a while now so it's difficult to consider them new. Is there anyone new that really moves you when they sing?

I don't know if it's just tone and delivery or if it's also production as well. Or maybe it's that when I was younger I was more emotionally affected because I was hearing those incredible voices for the first time. Those singers continue to move me but the newer ones don't. What are your thoughts? If you can recommend any singers who have emerged in the last 5-10 years that really move you, I'd be interested to hear who that is for you. As I said , the one exception for me here is Cleo Sol.

DISCUSSION 💭 Faith Evans’ Faithfully is an underrated album!

Post image
46 Upvotes

I was listening to Faithfully again, and “You Gets No Love” still goes OFF. 😭 Faith sounded so good on that song, but I’ve always preferred the music video version. I’m sorry, but Diddy and Loon were not needed on the album version. The video version just hits better to me, and I wish that was the one they put on the actual album.

“Burnin’ Up” is another one I love, and I prefer the video version of that song, too. I also have a soft spot for “I Love You” and “Can’t Believe” with Carl Thomas. There’s a lot to like about this album, and considering it reached No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, it definitely had an audience when it came out.

I don’t think Faithfully is necessarily forgotten, but it doesn’t seem to get the same attention as Faith’s debut or Keep the Faith. I’d be interested to hear how people feel about it now, especially those who were listening when it first dropped.

How do y’all feel about this album today? And what your top 3 favorite songs from this album.

DISCUSSION 💭 Of all the Black female R&B albums released in 2003, which one do you still go back to the most?

Post image
305 Upvotes

There were some really good albums released that year. Beyoncé made her solo debut with Dangerously in Love, Alicia Keys gave us The Diary of Alicia Keys, Ashanti released Chapter II, and Monica came back with After the Storm. We also had Love & Life by Mary J. Blige, Moodring by Mýa, and Tasty by Kelis.

Looking back, I’m curious which of these albums you think has aged the best. Whether it’s the production, the songwriting, the vocals, or just how often you still find yourself playing it, which album do you think has stood the test of time? And are there any that you appreciate more now than you did when they first came out?

DISCUSSION 💭 why does it feel like r&b vocalists aren't taking risks anymore

• Upvotes

like don't get me wrong, there's still amazing talent out there, but i feel like everyone's playing it safe? i miss when artists would just go completely left with their sound and still make it work. what am i missing or is this just a me thing

90s Aaliyah introducing Mya at “Wyclef’s Haitian Benefit Concert” 1999; “Movin’ On” snippet

Aaliyah introduced Mya in 1999 and shared some of her accolades before Mya took the stage to perform Movin’ On LiVE. The song was released in 1998 and reached no.34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no.4 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart. Such a nice clip to find of these two extremely talented artists.

RECOMMENDATIONS 🗨 Songs to listen to in the dark at night

Hey y’all! Sometimes, I love to listen to R&B in the dark at night. The vibe I go for is any song with a slower tempo. What are some songs that fit that vibe for you? Here are a few of mine:

Floetry - Say Yes, Getting Late
Rihanna - Yeah, I Said It; Skin
Maxwell - W/As My Girl
Changing Faces - G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T.
Janet Jackson - Would You Mind
Alicia Keys - Fire We Make (feat. Maxwell)
Usher - Can U Handle It
Aaliyah - Come Over (feat. Tank)
H.E.R. - Comfortable
Mariah Carey - The Room
D’Angelo - Untitled (How Does It Feel)

Also, I’m open to hearing recommendations for any song fitting the vibe I listed above!

EDIT: I added some more songs

Just discovered this late at night heavy rain pouring. I’m literally floating from the instrumental past 4:34 (the main song) and Tony’s background vocals.

My favorite unreleased track from the Bad era. This should’ve made it to the album if you ask me.
