Rescue Stories Help find this girl a forever home 🏡

Hey! I rescued this beautiful dog when she was bitten and bleeding outside. Since I was not able to keep her myself ( my dog is not very receptive to other dogs ) I have been paying a dog hotel to house her while I am looking for someone to take her.

Shelter is not an option since shelters in Armenia are very overwhelmed and don't take any dogs that are already housed somewhere.

Financially I am not able to continue for much longer so I was wondering if anyone would be interested in international adoption 😅

She is around 2 years old, weights around 2KG.

Very good with other dogs and loves kids. She is a bit of a barker and high energy.

Her name is Alba.

If anyone is interested let me know!

Rants Nightmare “rescue”

Okay, I don’t know if this is the right page or flair to use, but I really needed to talk about this - warning, this is going to be extremely long, so I apologize in advance. I don’t want to use names since I don’t want any trouble and I’m still a minor. (Also, this is NOT hate to rescues as a whole, most of my pets are rescues. This is specifically talking about my experience since it actually just came up in the news where I live)

I live in WA and am currently in high school. About a year ago, two of the staff at my school sent out emails to students about volunteer opportunities at a dog rescue. I was interested, followed up on the email, and ended up getting in contact with the owner of the rescue. I helped out with them for about a year until about a month ago they completely stopped reaching out with volunteer opportunities. In that time, I helped out with adoption events (the ones you see at Petsmart) and helped when they would get in transports of dogs; I even fostered some of the dogs. I should’ve noticed the red flags from the start (even when I did, I thought some of the issues might just be cause they’re a small rescue, so that was my fault), so here’s my list of examples;

1) I took in a foster the owner of the rescue told me had no reactivity to anything, low and behold, she was reactive to cats and men (to no fault of the dog), and would bare teeth and growl at my dad. When I reached out and said I couldn’t foster her, it took multiple days to get someone to take her despite me explaining how she was trying to attack cats and was becoming too much of a risk. It happened to be INCREDIBLY common for the rescue to drop off dogs, and when trying to return the dog, they would literally ghost you for days - one time, I agreed to foster for a week, and when the week ended, it took ANOTHER WEEK for someone to get this dog.

2) They required no paperwork for me to foster. Maybe because I had volunteered for so long that they knew me and how to reach me, but I was surprised when I asked if I (a minor) would be able to foster and what the process would look like, and was met with “that’s fine, just let me know what dog you want to take”. Not to mention, there were multiple times I was asked if I could foster, even though they knew my family said no, and they would continue to press.

3) They were very elusive with information about the dogs. When I volunteered at adoption events, I would often communicate with customers about the info of the dogs. Most of the time people would ask about breeds, specifically two cases I can remember are when we had a litter of puppies that were possibly malinois/shepherd mixes and another time we had pit mix puppies. With the malinois puppies, there were a bunch of people interested, and I tried to be as honest as I could that these were going to be high energy and need lots of training and exercise (literally a family came in with their toddler and asked if it would be like their golden retriever). I understand that I probably drove a lot of people away from adopting them cause of this, but I didn’t want someone to take them only for them to either return, dump, or just kennel the dog all day; this was met with one of the staff telling me not to tell people that they’re malinois, because “people have negative feelings” to the breed, and just told me to tell people they’re shepherds. Same thing happened with the pit puppies, and I was told to just say they’re terrier mixes.
Furthermore, they would get a consistent transport of dogs every month from Mexico (I actually had no idea what the problem with this was when I started, so that was my fault for not seeing it as a red flag). I would help out with these transports when they got them in, which consisted of me going to this persons house, a van coming filled to the brim with dogs, and having to unload them into this persons yard (a lot had fresh stitches from surgery, so putting all of them together in a yard was asking for problems). Literally no info given to me in advance on any of these dogs, and almost got bit a few times cause many of the older ones were reactive.

4) They had no set location. I was informed they’re entirely foster based, which I thought was amazing at first (and a lot of the people who fostered actually were great people who had no involvement in what I’ll mention later), but turns out with having literal shipments of dogs every month, you end up running out of fosters. So, the owner would “foster” them in their house; leading to them having over ten dogs in their one story house at once.

That last point leads into what made me post about this now; I found a video on instagram where animal control seized 17 animals from them, all of which being in kennels inside the garage. I looked it up, turns out multiple news outlets have posted about this; they are now facing an animal cruelty lawsuit. I genuinely am at a loss for words, and I feel like a complete asshole for even helping them out. A lot of the reason for why I was doing this was to help out animals in need, but also because my school has connections to my local zoo for internships, and having experience in animal welfare can help get you in. I feel like I am fucked. Like, what the hell? Do I take this off my resume? Am I a jackass for volunteering with them that long? Obviously the most important thing is the welfare of the animals, and I don’t know how to react. I don’t know where to go from here, I’ve always wanted to work in animal welfare, and was hoping this “experience” could help me land that internship and future jobs. I want to back out of the interview I had set up for that internship position, because what do I even say? For fucks sake, two of the dogs they seized were injured when they took them. It’s genuinely disgusting to me that I was helping out people who could do something like that; especially to see one of them, a person I have met and talked to numerous times in person, in this video where they removed animals from a deplorable situation.

I am sure from this post alone you can find the “rescue”, but I want to say that I am not trying to start drama or say anyone is guilty in anything. I just needed to rant. I know this post was long and not well put together, so I apologize. If this post goes against any of the rules, I am also sincerely sorry and will promptly delete. I did not know where else to go.

Advice Help looking for rescues

Hello!

My uncle has found himself in a troublesome situation and he needs to go back to his country. He is planning to go back in January.

In the meantime I’m trying to find a rescue that will accept his female German shepherd that he has here in the U.S. She is about 9 years old. She is not fixed. Located in Central Valley of California.

No one in the family here in the US can adopt her. I cannot adopt her as I have 5 senior cats.

He doesn’t have the resources to take her back to his country either.

Please forgive me if this doesn’t belong in this subreddit. But if anyone can help me help him finding her a rescue that will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Nutmeg takes time to get comfortable and needs a foster family with patience that will give her space and time to decompress and learn to trust.  Nutmeg is an older lady that deserves a loving family.  Unfortunately, she has a deadline of October 20th.  Please consider fostering nutmeg for a rescue as she is “rescue only” 🙏.

Advice I’m falling in love with my foster dog, but I’m worried we can’t afford to adopt him. How do you make this decision?

I’m really struggling with whether or not to adopt my current foster dog, and I could use some honest advice from people who have been in a similar situation.
He’s a small, sweet senior-ish dog (around 8 years old and 11 lbs) who has completely stolen our hearts. He’s affectionate, friendly, and has fit into our family so well. My husband and kids love him, and I’ve become really attached to him, too. Knowing that he feels safe and happy with us makes the thought of letting him go incredibly hard.
Before coming into foster care, he apparently had some behavioral issues at the shelter, but he has been an absolute sweetheart in our home. I feel like we’ve gotten to see a side of him that not everyone gets to see, and I hate the thought of losing him.
But here’s the problem: I’m genuinely worried about the financial responsibility of adopting him.
We already have two small dogs of our own, and we love them dearly. They are our responsibility, and I know they will need veterinary care as they get older, too. We’ve recently gone through some extensive vet bills for our existing dogs, and we really don’t have extra money sitting around for unexpected expenses.
His veterinary records indicate that he needs a dental cleaning, potentially with extractions, and I would also like to get bloodwork done to have a better understanding of his overall health. The rescue is not going to cover these expenses if we adopt him, so they would become our responsibility. I don’t yet know what his total medical needs or costs will be.
I’m worried about adopting him, paying for his immediate medical needs, and then having an unexpected emergency come up with him or one of our other two dogs. I don’t want to put ourselves in a financially difficult position, and I especially don’t want to take resources away from the dogs we already have.
At the same time, my heart is telling me to keep him. He’s so loving, he fits into our family, and the thought of him leaving genuinely hurts. My husband is attached to him, too, although he shares my concerns about the financial side of things.
We have another potential adopter interested in him, so this isn’t just a hypothetical decision. If we let him go, he may have a wonderful home waiting for him. I keep going back and forth between wondering whether I’ll regret letting him go and knowing that love alone doesn’t pay veterinary bills.
For those of you who have fostered or adopted dogs, I would really appreciate your honest perspective:
Have you ever decided not to adopt a foster dog you were deeply attached to because of finances? Did you regret it?
Would you adopt a dog when you knew you couldn’t comfortably afford unexpected veterinary expenses?
How much would you budget for an older, small-breed dog’s dental work, bloodwork, and potential extractions?
Am I overthinking this, or is financial uncertainty a legitimate reason to let a dog go?
How do you cope with the heartbreak of saying goodbye to a foster dog you love?
I’m not looking for people to tell me to follow my heart. I know I love him. I’m trying to figure out whether adopting him would be a responsible decision for our entire family, including the two dogs who already depend on us.
Please be kind, but honest. I really need some perspective from people who understand how difficult fostering decisions can be.

Discussion Does anyone else with a mutt get sad that they’ll never have another dog like the one you have?

Post image
544 Upvotes

So, I have one purebred dog and one rescue mutt. I feel like if I wanted another dog with a similar temperament to my German Shepherd, it’s something I could get. The breed has certain qualities and tendencies that are very common amongst shepherds. Not that there will ever be a dog JUST like my girl, but I could feasibly find a shepherd who has a similar personality. However, I don’t think this is as likely for my mutt. I love him so much, and it makes me sad to think I will probably never have another dog so unique! Does anyone else get bummed that they won’t ever get another pup who is similar? My silly guy has 6 breeds in him

Advice Extremely anxious rescue dog - when to get a professional involved?

Hello everyone!

We recently adopted a rescue dog from South Korea and he's been at our house for three days now. Yes, he hasn't had much time to acclimate yet, but what was described to us as "a slightly shy and timid dog" turned out to be a very anxious small bean who won't even let us touch him.

He's three years old and has spent his entire life at a shelter in Korea after he was found in the streets at the age of two months. The past four months he spent at a foster home, one of which he was somewhere in the woods because he had run away after a collar malfunction and a loud noise. After he was found, we were told he was fine both physically and mentally (our mistake, we should have questioned that).

Long story short: He is here now and absolutely nothing like the dog we were told about. He is hiding in the bedroom and only comes out two to three times a day to relieve himself before immediately making a run for the bedroom again. We can't go for walks with him or take him outside at all because he won't let us put a leash on him. Getting a collar on him was a nightmare.

It's only been three days, so we know it's very early, but we have zero experience with anxious dogs and he is our first rescue. Mistakes were made, the rescue isn't helping, and now here we are.

We are thinking of waiting four weeks to see if there's any improvement by allowing him space and letting him calm down before reaching out to dog trainers. Is that too late? Do we risk more damage by putting it off?

Thank you so much for any advice in advance!
