MOD Clarification: Rule #9 - Safety and Bite History

We've noticed some confusion regarding Rule #9: Safety and Bite History, specifically what constitutes as a bite history that would not be allowed to post here.

Rule #9 applies only when a dog has a known history of biting a person that resulted in the bite breaking or puncturing the person's skin.

A dog does not violate Rule #9 simply because they:

  • Have a history of mouthing or nipping
  • Have put their mouth on a person without breaking skin
  • Have made contact with someone's skin without causing a wound
  • Have snapped or air-snapped without making contact
  • Have bitten another animal
  • Have displayed fear, reactivity, resource guarding, or other behavioral concerns without a human bite that broke skin

For example; a documented incident in which a dog nipped someone's hand but did not break the skin does not, by itself, make the dog ineligible for a rehoming or networking post under Rule #9.

Conversely, a documented incident in which a dog bit a person and punctured their skin does fall under Rule #9, regardless of the breed of the dog or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This rule stands regardless of the situation the dog was in when it bit.

Please do not report a post under Rule #9 solely because a dog has bitten another animal or bitten a human without breaking skin. If a post contains rehoming a dog that has bitten a person and broke the skin, those can be reported.

MOD Community Update & Recent Changes

Hi everyone! The mod team has been hard at work on cleaning up and updating r/rescuedogs. The goal is to make the subreddit easier to use, easier to moderate consistently, and (most importantly) a better place for people working with rescued dogs.

We've made quite a few changes recently, so here's a quick overview.

šŸ“‹ Rules & Flair

We've rewritten and streamlined the subreddit rules to make them clearer and easier to follow. Please review them again before posting/commenting.

Some of the biggest changes include:

  • Be Civil now explicitly covers harassment and demeaning comments directed at both users and animals.
  • Stay On Topic now covers both off-topic posts and discussions that derail otherwise relevant threads.
  • Adoption/Foster/Rescue networking has been consolidated into a clearer format.
  • Donation and fundraising requirements have been updated, simplified, and clarified as well as added a disclaimer.
  • Pledge rules have been updated to make the process clearer.
  • No Spam has been updated to cover a broader range of abuse.
  • No Breed-Based Hate or Dog-Directed Harassment has been clarified.
  • Good-faith discussion about breeds and related topics is allowed, but inflammatory comments and attacks on breeds or individual dogs are not.
  • Safety & Bite History now focuses on dogs with a documented history of biting a person that drew blood, made more consistently enforcible, and added a disclaimer.
  • Outdated and redundant rules have been removed.

We've also cleaned up the post flairs and consolidated several categories to make choosing the appropriate flair easier, as well as adding an 'Outcome' flair for adoption posts that have had outcomes.

šŸ¤– Automod & Moderation

  • We've cleaned up the Automod configuration and removed a number of outdated or unnecessary rules and automated messages.
  • The welcome message has also been simplified. New users are now directed to review the rules and report rule-breaking content rather than engaging with it.
  • We've also standardized our saved responses for removals, bans, and common modmail questions so that moderation decisions can be communicated more consistently.

šŸ• Networking & Euthanasia Posts

  • We've updated the formatting requirements for adoption/foster/rescue pull, and euthanasia/deadline posts.
    • The goal is to make these posts easier for people to find and understand while keeping the process as simple as possible for the people doing the actual networking.
  • We've added an Outcome flair so that posts can be updated by OP when we know what happened to an animal.
  • Comments are now set to display oldest first, which should make it easier to follow updates on networking and urgent posts. Votes are also hidden for the first 60 minutes.

šŸ’° Donations & Pledges

  • We've clarified the requirements for donation requests and added a disclaimer that verification is not a guarantee or endorsement and that users are responsible for doing their own due diligence before donating.
  • A new form has been created to streamline donation plea requests.
  • We've also added saved modmail responses to help people who want to make donation requests understand the verification process.

šŸ”— Community Resources

  • We've updated the sidebar and added links to other communities and resources that may be useful for adoption, fostering, pet help, lost animals, and other situations that don't fit within r/rescuedogs.
  • We've also added the ability to sort posts by post flair, so users can tailor what they want to see.

šŸ’¬ Community Feedback

  • We're also reaching out to established members of the community, including people who have regularly used r/rescuedogs for rescue networking, to hear what has and hasn't been working.
  • We know that changes to a community are much more useful when they're informed by the people who actually use it, so if there's something you think we should know about, please feel free to send us a modmail.

This is an ongoing process. We don't expect to get everything perfect immediately, but we're committed to making r/rescuedogs a useful, welcoming place for people trying to help dogs in need.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck around, contributed, reported problems, networked dogs, fostered, adopted, or otherwise helped make this community what it is.

~ The r/rescuedogs Mod Team

Donations/Supplies Plea Please Help My Paralyzed Rescue Dog Brownie We Need Help With Her Further Treatment

Hello everyone, I’m here to ask for help for my rescue dog Brownie.
After months of running between different vets, countless tests, blood reports, X-rays, and an MRI costing nearly ₹40,000, we still don’t have a clear solution. Her MRI showed inflammation in her brain, and her paralysis has continued to worsen. Now she can’t even lift her front paws properly.
We’ve already spent over ₹1 lakh on her treatment, and I’m completely broke. I also have two other rescued dogs to care for. We raised funds for her MRI with the help of kind people online, and I’m forever grateful to everyone who helped us get this far.
Unfortunately, Brownie still needs further investigations, including a CT scan, to understand what’s happening with her lungs and abnormal breathing. The next steps could cost another ₹30,000 or more, and I genuinely don’t know how I’ll manage it.
We’ve consulted four vets already, but we’re still searching for answers. I’m not ready to give up on her, but I cannot do this alone anymore.
Please consider donating whatever you can. Even a small contribution would mean a lot to us. If you cannot donate, sharing this post or connecting us with an experienced veterinary neurologist in Delhi NCR would also help tremendously.
All medical reports and bills can be provided for verification. Thank you for reading and giving Brownie a chance

Discussion Does anyone else with a mutt get sad that they’ll never have another dog like the one you have?

Post image
621 Upvotes

So, I have one purebred dog and one rescue mutt. I feel like if I wanted another dog with a similar temperament to my German Shepherd, it’s something I could get. The breed has certain qualities and tendencies that are very common amongst shepherds. Not that there will ever be a dog JUST like my girl, but I could feasibly find a shepherd who has a similar personality. However, I don’t think this is as likely for my mutt. I love him so much, and it makes me sad to think I will probably never have another dog so unique! Does anyone else get bummed that they won’t ever get another pup who is similar? My silly guy has 6 breeds in him

Rescue Stories Winter hit the border overnight, Kanchi gave birth to 2 puppies on the freezing mud today. Scrambling to build emergency insulated bedding tonight.

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Winter conditions have officially arrived along the India-Bhutan border, and the sudden drop in temperature is hitting our local street rescues hard.

While doing our daily rounds today, we found one of our pack dogs, Kanchi, nursing two newborn puppies directly on the cold, damp mud. Newborn pups cannot regulate their body temperature, and sleeping on cold ground or wet concrete rapidly saps their body heat overnight.

Our Emergency Plan for Tonight:

Ground Thermal Layer: Stacking thick corrugated cardboard box layers and wooden pallets under their area to cut off the cold ground draft completely.

Dry Bedding: Setting up a sheltered corner packed with dry burlap sacks and heavy blankets so Kanchi and her pups stay dry and warm.

High-Calorie Nourishment: Feeding Kanchi warm, high-protein food to help her maintain her body heat while nursing.

Moments like this highlight why our long-term goal of building permanent, elevated, weatherproof wooden sleeping boxes across our feeding spots is so critical as winter sets in.

I will be posting photo and video updates of Kanchi, her pups, and our daily border rounds on my profile for anyone following along. Thank you all so much for caring for these street rescues! ā¤ļø

We moved to Costa Rica 10 years ago and never planned on having pets as we wanted to be free to travel. Its heartbreaking here as there are so many stray and neglected dogs/cats

Not even a month after arriving we found a puppy dying of parvo. We saved her and thats how our love bug Luna came to us.

A few months later an adorable young dog would not leave us alone and literally would break into our house. We found out she had owners and took her back several times but they didn’t really seem to care about her. She was underweight and her coat was awful. We moved a few months later and she came with us. This is how we got my jealous little shadow Winnie.

A couple years later we noticed our neighbor down the hill had a sweet shepherd cross puppy. This puppy would constantly follow us home. We grew to love her as she matured into a sweet and gentle girl. We noticed she was pregnant and then the owners didnt want her anymore. We took her in and she had 4 pups. This is how Ecces (originally Isis) came to be our girl

Down the road there was a really poor family who had an old cranky chicken guard dog. He would run onto the road and try to bite us all the time. One day he showed up to our house in the pouring rain. We felt bad so we made him a little lean to with blankets to keep him dry. Would could hear him squealing in pain and scratching his ears. We immediately took him to the vet and they would shocked. His ears were fused closed by ulcers and inside was more fungus then the vet had ever seen. We got him fixed up and sent him on his way. He refused to leave our house after that. He was scrawny and dirty so we finally caved and fed him since he wouldnt leave. Its been 3 years now and my boy Oso is the love of my life. I can’t imagine life without him

After Ecces had her pups we spayed her and rehomed 3 of the pups and kept our girl Angel. She is the only one who has known safety and security her entire life. Also Oso is the father we now know. 3 of the pups were the spitting image of him. These guys will know love, warm beds and full bellies until the day they leave this earth. We won the pupper lottery. Please adopt. Don’t shop

Hey! I rescued this beautiful dog when she was bitten and bleeding outside. Since I was not able to keep her myself ( my dog is not very receptive to other dogs ) I have been paying a dog hotel to house her while I am looking for someone to take her.

Shelter is not an option since shelters in Armenia are very overwhelmed and don't take any dogs that are already housed somewhere.

Financially I am not able to continue for much longer so I was wondering if anyone would be interested in international adoption šŸ˜…

She is around 2 years old, weights around 2KG.

Very good with other dogs and loves kids. She is a bit of a barker and high energy.

Her name is Alba.

If anyone is interested let me know!

Advice I’m falling in love with my foster dog, but I’m worried we can’t afford to adopt him. How do you make this decision?

I’m really struggling with whether or not to adopt my current foster dog, and I could use some honest advice from people who have been in a similar situation.
He’s a small, sweet senior-ish dog (around 8 years old and 11 lbs) who has completely stolen our hearts. He’s affectionate, friendly, and has fit into our family so well. My husband and kids love him, and I’ve become really attached to him, too. Knowing that he feels safe and happy with us makes the thought of letting him go incredibly hard.
Before coming into foster care, he apparently had some behavioral issues at the shelter, but he has been an absolute sweetheart in our home. I feel like we’ve gotten to see a side of him that not everyone gets to see, and I hate the thought of losing him.
But here’s the problem: I’m genuinely worried about the financial responsibility of adopting him.
We already have two small dogs of our own, and we love them dearly. They are our responsibility, and I know they will need veterinary care as they get older, too. We’ve recently gone through some extensive vet bills for our existing dogs, and we really don’t have extra money sitting around for unexpected expenses.
His veterinary records indicate that he needs a dental cleaning, potentially with extractions, and I would also like to get bloodwork done to have a better understanding of his overall health. The rescue is not going to cover these expenses if we adopt him, so they would become our responsibility. I don’t yet know what his total medical needs or costs will be.
I’m worried about adopting him, paying for his immediate medical needs, and then having an unexpected emergency come up with him or one of our other two dogs. I don’t want to put ourselves in a financially difficult position, and I especially don’t want to take resources away from the dogs we already have.
At the same time, my heart is telling me to keep him. He’s so loving, he fits into our family, and the thought of him leaving genuinely hurts. My husband is attached to him, too, although he shares my concerns about the financial side of things.
We have another potential adopter interested in him, so this isn’t just a hypothetical decision. If we let him go, he may have a wonderful home waiting for him. I keep going back and forth between wondering whether I’ll regret letting him go and knowing that love alone doesn’t pay veterinary bills.
For those of you who have fostered or adopted dogs, I would really appreciate your honest perspective:
Have you ever decided not to adopt a foster dog you were deeply attached to because of finances? Did you regret it?
Would you adopt a dog when you knew you couldn’t comfortably afford unexpected veterinary expenses?
How much would you budget for an older, small-breed dog’s dental work, bloodwork, and potential extractions?
Am I overthinking this, or is financial uncertainty a legitimate reason to let a dog go?
How do you cope with the heartbreak of saying goodbye to a foster dog you love?
I’m not looking for people to tell me to follow my heart. I know I love him. I’m trying to figure out whether adopting him would be a responsible decision for our entire family, including the two dogs who already depend on us.
Please be kind, but honest. I really need some perspective from people who understand how difficult fostering decisions can be.

By us! This method of weighing him will no longer work, but he’s gaining about 2 lbs every three days (24.2 lbs today-I’m wondering if he has some Great Dane in him, his legs are getting long). Approximate age 10-12 weeks. It’s going to be fun to see what he ends up looking like!
We’re going to get him the Wisdom DNA testing and pet insurance. He is taking well to training, and have not introduced him to any other dogs yet (he has a bacterial skin infection), but many novel experiences.

Reinforcing training with my old boy, who is loving it. I think everything will be fine, just love, time and work.

If you want a very good dog, check out the shelters. There’s so many Very Good Boys and Girls there!

Adoption/Foster Plea Rehoming Belgian Malinois

ā¤ļø Looking to Rehome Nadia, My 7-Month-Old Belgian Malinois | Sweeny, TX

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to find the right home for my 7-month-old Belgian Malinois, Nadia. ā¤ļø

Nadia is a playful, energetic, intelligent girl who is eager to learn. She’s good with children and has received advanced on-leash training through K10 Professional Dog Training LLC.

This is a really difficult decision for me. My household is very busy caring for young children and an elderly family member. I spend time with Nadia every morning and several hours each evening walking, training, and playing with her, but despite my best efforts, she spends too much of the weekday in her crate while I’m taking care of everyone else. My schedule and financial circumstances have also changed, and I’ve come to realize that she deserves more time, activity, and companionship than I can consistently provide right now.

Belgian Malinois are incredibly smart, active working dogs who thrive with structure, exercise, mental stimulation, and continued training. Nadia has so much potential, and I want her to be in a home where she can continue learning, stay active, and truly thrive.

I’m looking for a committed, loving adopter with experience with Belgian Malinois or other working breeds, or someone who fully understands the demands of the breed and is prepared to meet them.

If you’re interested in Nadia or know someone who might be a good fit, please take a look at her Adopt-a-Pet profile:

Sharing this post would also mean a lot. My priority is finding Nadia the right home, not just any home. I want to make sure she gets the life, attention, and companionship she deserves. ā¤ļø

Thank you for reading and helping me spread the word.

Rants Nightmare ā€œrescueā€

Okay, I don’t know if this is the right page or flair to use, but I really needed to talk about this - warning, this is going to be extremely long, so I apologize in advance. I don’t want to use names since I don’t want any trouble and I’m still a minor. (Also, this is NOT hate to rescues as a whole, most of my pets are rescues. This is specifically talking about my experience since it actually just came up in the news where I live)

I live in WA and am currently in high school. About a year ago, two of the staff at my school sent out emails to students about volunteer opportunities at a dog rescue. I was interested, followed up on the email, and ended up getting in contact with the owner of the rescue. I helped out with them for about a year until about a month ago they completely stopped reaching out with volunteer opportunities. In that time, I helped out with adoption events (the ones you see at Petsmart) and helped when they would get in transports of dogs; I even fostered some of the dogs. I should’ve noticed the red flags from the start (even when I did, I thought some of the issues might just be cause they’re a small rescue, so that was my fault), so here’s my list of examples;

1) I took in a foster the owner of the rescue told me had no reactivity to anything, low and behold, she was reactive to cats and men (to no fault of the dog), and would bare teeth and growl at my dad. When I reached out and said I couldn’t foster her, it took multiple days to get someone to take her despite me explaining how she was trying to attack cats and was becoming too much of a risk. It happened to be INCREDIBLY common for the rescue to drop off dogs, and when trying to return the dog, they would literally ghost you for days - one time, I agreed to foster for a week, and when the week ended, it took ANOTHER WEEK for someone to get this dog.

2) They required no paperwork for me to foster. Maybe because I had volunteered for so long that they knew me and how to reach me, but I was surprised when I asked if I (a minor) would be able to foster and what the process would look like, and was met with ā€œthat’s fine, just let me know what dog you want to takeā€. Not to mention, there were multiple times I was asked if I could foster, even though they knew my family said no, and they would continue to press.

3) They were very elusive with information about the dogs. When I volunteered at adoption events, I would often communicate with customers about the info of the dogs. Most of the time people would ask about breeds, specifically two cases I can remember are when we had a litter of puppies that were possibly malinois/shepherd mixes and another time we had pit mix puppies. With the malinois puppies, there were a bunch of people interested, and I tried to be as honest as I could that these were going to be high energy and need lots of training and exercise (literally a family came in with their toddler and asked if it would be like their golden retriever). I understand that I probably drove a lot of people away from adopting them cause of this, but I didn’t want someone to take them only for them to either return, dump, or just kennel the dog all day; this was met with one of the staff telling me not to tell people that they’re malinois, because ā€œpeople have negative feelingsā€ to the breed, and just told me to tell people they’re shepherds. Same thing happened with the pit puppies, and I was told to just say they’re terrier mixes.
Furthermore, they would get a consistent transport of dogs every month from Mexico (I actually had no idea what the problem with this was when I started, so that was my fault for not seeing it as a red flag). I would help out with these transports when they got them in, which consisted of me going to this persons house, a van coming filled to the brim with dogs, and having to unload them into this persons yard (a lot had fresh stitches from surgery, so putting all of them together in a yard was asking for problems). Literally no info given to me in advance on any of these dogs, and almost got bit a few times cause many of the older ones were reactive.

4) They had no set location. I was informed they’re entirely foster based, which I thought was amazing at first (and a lot of the people who fostered actually were great people who had no involvement in what I’ll mention later), but turns out with having literal shipments of dogs every month, you end up running out of fosters. So, the owner would ā€œfosterā€ them in their house; leading to them having over ten dogs in their one story house at once.

That last point leads into what made me post about this now; I found a video on instagram where animal control seized 17 animals from them, all of which being in kennels inside the garage. I looked it up, turns out multiple news outlets have posted about this; they are now facing an animal cruelty lawsuit. I genuinely am at a loss for words, and I feel like a complete asshole for even helping them out. A lot of the reason for why I was doing this was to help out animals in need, but also because my school has connections to my local zoo for internships, and having experience in animal welfare can help get you in. I feel like I am fucked. Like, what the hell? Do I take this off my resume? Am I a jackass for volunteering with them that long? Obviously the most important thing is the welfare of the animals, and I don’t know how to react. I don’t know where to go from here, I’ve always wanted to work in animal welfare, and was hoping this ā€œexperienceā€ could help me land that internship and future jobs. I want to back out of the interview I had set up for that internship position, because what do I even say? For fucks sake, two of the dogs they seized were injured when they took them. It’s genuinely disgusting to me that I was helping out people who could do something like that; especially to see one of them, a person I have met and talked to numerous times in person, in this video where they removed animals from a deplorable situation.

I am sure from this post alone you can find the ā€œrescueā€, but I want to say that I am not trying to start drama or say anyone is guilty in anything. I just needed to rant. I know this post was long and not well put together, so I apologize. If this post goes against any of the rules, I am also sincerely sorry and will promptly delete. I did not know where else to go.
