The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ

What is a Renaissance festival?

A Renaissance festival or faire is a themed event that typically takes place outdoors, like a county fair, but showcases elements of the Renaissance period, such as music, dance, food, arts and crafts, and historical reenactments.

When and where do Renaissance festivals take place?

Start by checking The Ren List. Renaissance festivals are held at various times throughout the year, depending on the location. They can be found in many cities and towns across the United States and around the world.

What should I wear to a Renaissance festival?

You can pretty much wear anything you like. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Renaissance-themed attire, but there are usually no strict guidelines (check with your local festival for rules). Many people also choose to wear costumes from other fandoms.

Can I bring a sword, axe, or other weapon?

Some Renaissance festivals allow swords as part of a costume if they are properly sheathed and "peace tied". "Peace tied" means the sword is secured in a sheath or scabbard so it can't be removed or openly displayed. Some festivals do not allow weapons at all. Check with your local festival for more information.

What can I expect to see and do at a Renaissance festival?

At a Renaissance festival, you can expect to see various performers, including musicians, jugglers, dancers, and actors. There are also craft vendors selling handmade goods, food vendors, and interactive activities like archery and sword fighting demonstrations.

Can I bring my own food and drinks to a Renaissance festival?

Most Renaissance festivals have food and drink vendors on-site, so outside food and drinks may not be allowed. However, some festivals do allow you to bring in a water bottle or small snack. Contact your local festival for more information.

Are Renaissance festivals family-friendly?

Yes, Renaissance festivals are typically family-friendly events with activities and entertainment for all ages. There are usually children's areas with games and crafts, as well as family-friendly performances and demonstrations.

How much does it cost to attend a Renaissance festival?

The cost of attending a Renaissance festival can vary depending on the location and the activities offered. Tickets are usually sold in advance or at the gate, and prices may range from $20 to $50 per person.

Can I participate in a Renaissance festival?

Many Renaissance festivals rely on both employees and volunteers to help with various aspects of the event, such as set-up, ticket sales, and clean-up. If you are interested in participating as a performer or vendor, you can contact the festival organizers for more information. Another option is to join a “guild” or a group of performers. You can ask your local festival for guild information.

Huzzah!

Wandering the Maryland Renaissance Fair in my Lawbringer kit when i got approached by u/PLKnight complimenting my armor. Did a doubletake as his Cathedral set was something i drooled over when they shared it online. Really Happy to see the craftmanship in person.

Trinkets

Hey guys!

This is my second year bringing trinkets to gift, this year I got really excited and made very involved trinkets to gift. Only bringing 15 or so.

That being said - I read a post this morning where someone was frowning upon people bringing trinkets that are something a vendor could potentially be selling/something similar and saying trinkets that are too involed/big shouldn't be allowed. I'm now freaking out low key because of the potential to be frowned upon for my gifts, or take sales away from a vendor.

I'm gonna attach some photos of what I've made - would love opinions from you guys? I will keep them home if I have to but it breaks my heart to think of doing that!

Thank you in advance 🫶

(Sorry about the back to back posts! Had to edit). Tried hard with my garb and handmade my accessories, had a cool time and can’t wait to check out more faires. Had a blast shopping and made a completely random impulse buy of this beautiful carved pipe for the old Toby. I hope everyone had a good time💚

Anyone heard “sir Charles” talk about kids weirdly?

Post image

Has anyone had a bad experience with the jouster “sir Charles” or had any problematic interactions with him? He said some weird thing about kids and treated the women poorly.

I was at the Utah ren fair in Mona and had a great time, but something stuck with me, the multi time world champion jouster was kind of an asshole, during and after the show.

During the show he was very funny and entertaining, but part of the show involve picking princesses from the crowd to give flowers to, two of which were small children, during this he said something among the lines of

“The best part of being a knight is you get to have multiple princesses, if you know what I mean”

I heard a few people say “those are children” And kind of disgusted he said that.

And after the show while there were only a few people gathered around the horses and talking with the jousters, he was trying to get the attention of the announcer for the joust, and shouted “WOMAN” to get her attention, which is not cool, you don’t say that to anyone even if your trying to get their attention. And It wasn’t a playful or medieval way, just yelled at her, and everyone looked around and seemed uncomfortable that he would do that.

This is not to spread hate and I know this is not a usual post, but it was stuck on my mind and I have to put it out there.

It was chilly and the ground muddy, and a tree branch fell while taking a picture and nearly missed me, but I still had a good time. 😄I also had to change my original outfit because it wasn't cold weather friendly. Gotta love Maryland, where we can get four seasons in one week!
