Finally got the main shell and base plate segments printed and together for the rough copy that I will use figure out fitting and final measurements inside and out for the final print model and components.
(3D model by me using the reference photos I've gathered of the system and using some of the shared parts from the snes to reference scale. This should be as close to 1:1 in size as it gets.No Ai has been, or will ever used at any stage of this process.)

Got a Steal today at a Retro Game store
Probably won't ever use it really. But it will look nice with my PS1 stuff. got it for $10 sitting in a random box, sitting next to a Madcatz one as well. But I of course wanted the official one at only $10. I know they aren't very expensive on ebay regardless, but I never seem to get the deals lol

New Shell is finally here. Step One is done
Just got my new shell installed. Yes it had black buttons with it too. But I am applying the decals on them so they say Open/Power/Reset. I figured that would be easier to do outside of the console. I also should have Black Memory card/Controller ports coming in a few days too. this thing will hopefully be 100% black after I get those installed.

Cleaning Arc the Lad collection box
Hi, there is some sticky brown stuff on the back of my Arc the Lad collection box. Any tips on how to safely clean it off?

This is from another poster but as someone cataloguing PS1 games I'm coming across this often: Artwork that's being cut with a scissors to fit in the smaller box. Was this done at a game shop like maybe a pre-owned comes in with a poor box and they do this, or was this happening at the DADC factory
galleryThis is someone elses picture but I've seen it with copies of Silent Hill, a copy of The Mummy that's currently in my possession and right now this week, an old copy of Battle Arena Toshinden. All PAL of course. Who's cutting the artwork across Europe!?

IS IT JUST ME, OR ARE THE BOSSES IN THE SECOND SPIDER-MAN GAME ON PS1 MUCH HARDER THAN THOSE IN THE FIRST GAME?
I really feel like the bosses in the first game are manageable, even on Hard mode, whereas the ones in the second game are extremely difficult on Hard mode. Let's recap!
FIRST GAME
1ST BOSS
Scorpion: He hits hard, but if you use your Web and jump kicks enough, you can defeat him without too much trouble.
Shocker: Very, very hard for a first boss! Hitting him with your fists, kicks, or Web attacks does almost no damage. You have to throw barrels at him, but he keeps blasting you nonstop. Most of the time, he'll destroy your barrels before you can even pick them up!
The only way to slow him down is to use your Web to immobilize him, but he'll break free VERY quickly. You can also use your Web to pull him toward you, which makes him fall and gives you a little more time to attack, but not much.
And if you manage to do all that and throw a barrel at him when he's a little too close, YOU'LL TAKE DAMAGE FROM THE EXPLOSION TOO!
And as if that weren't enough, there's a time limit, and the longer you take, the fewer barrels you'll have left!
Personally, I think the best strategy is to target the big box hanging from the ceiling and use your Web to make it fall on Shocker. But good luck figuring out that trick the first time you play the game!
Honestly, Shocker is an extremely difficult first boss.
2ND BOSS
Rhino: Even though he hits like a truck, he's definitely the dumbest boss in the game! Once you know what to do (make him charge into the electrical panels or get him stuck in a wall and throw barrels at him), he's easy to defeat, even on Hard mode!
Even your fists and Web attacks can deal a decent amount of damage to him!
Sandman (1ST ENCOUNTER): I don't really know if he's officially considered a boss during this mission, but I personally think he qualifies.
You have to get inside a train while Sandman chases you. He creates three sand walls, so you have to throw boxes, barrels, or cars at them to break through. I strongly recommend using a car, as it will destroy a wall instantly!
You can also throw objects directly at Sandman to knock him back temporarily.
Personally, I don't find this encounter particularly difficult. It's clearly easier than Shocker, assuming we count Sandman as a boss, but still harder than Rhino!
3RD BOSS
Venom: Well, this boss is much harder than the previous ones in the first game! However, you really need to play on Hard mode to appreciate the difficulty. On Easy or Normal, you won't find him nearly as challenging.
The really difficult part is figuring out how to hit Venom without getting hit in return. He hits hard and has plenty of different, powerful attacks that can reach you!
The best strategy is to use jump kicks and projectile Web attacks to hit him. However, even when you're not close to him, you have to watch out for his long-range tentacle attack, which can remove almost all your HP!
Hammerhead: Never judge a book by its cover!
Before playing this game, I didn't know who this character was, so I thought, "He's just some dude in a suit holding a machine gun. I've been defeating guys with guns throughout the entire game, so this one's going to be easy!"
And if you know this boss, you know just how wrong I was!
Hammerhead isn't an ordinary guy. His skull and skeleton are made of adamantium (yes, the same material as Wolverine's!), which makes him extremely resistant and much stronger than an ordinary human. And you can definitely feel that when you fight him!
This fight is really tough. Hammerhead hits you very hard when he tackles you with his skull, and whenever you're not directly attacking him, he'll shoot you with his machine gun.
Your only way to damage him effectively is to use the Web-pull move to disarm him. Then, STAY OUT OF HIS WAY (otherwise, he'll headbutt you for free! ^^) and attack him, ideally with Web-enhanced punches, before he gets his machine gun back.
You have to repeat this process while also dealing with a helicopter that starts shooting at you later in the fight!
In comparison, even though Venom isn't easy, I still find Hammerhead harder!
I'd say he's slightly more manageable than Shocker, but he's still a very difficult boss!
4TH BOSS
Venom (2ND FIGHT): This fight is even harder than the first one! You also have to keep an eye on Mary Jane. Venom can reach any switch at any time, and if you're too busy fighting him while the water is running, you'll lose!
The Lizard: Clearly the most frustrating boss in the game!
He's not difficult because he requires a lot of strategy. He's difficult because the fight is completely anti-fun! Honestly, it feels like the developers were just being lazy with this one. Such a shame, because the Lizard is a great antagonist in the story!
First, before the fight even starts, you have to perform this stupid, pointless button combination. It doesn't require any skill; it just wastes your time every time you fight him.
Then, at the beginning of the fight, you usually don't even have time to move before he lands a free hit on you. Around 70% of the time, there's seemingly nothing you can do about it!
Still, you can grab the purple ammo, throw it at him, hit him three times with your Web-enhanced fists, and repeat the process.
Boring, isn't it?
His HP decreases very slowly, and he hits extremely hard. You also have a beam that automatically tries to reach you.
But even with all these unfair mechanics, you can defeat him without too much trouble if you're patient enough. The problem is that having to be so patient becomes annoying!
To be honest, I don't even think he's harder than Venom.
5TH BOSS
Mysterio: For me, he's clearly the hardest boss in the first game, but at least the fight feels fair!
First, you have to destroy all his red spots using projectile Web attacks. Meanwhile, he'll try to punch you, kick you, or crush you with a spiked wheel.
I strongly recommend collecting as much Web ammo as possible before reaching Phase 2.
Once you've destroyed all the red spots, he'll start firing beams at you. Just keep throwing projectile Web attacks at him until he stops firing.
Finally, you have to avoid the electricity on the floor, prevent him from grabbing you, and land a few more Web attacks to finish him off.
This last phase is tricky because it's very difficult to find an opportunity to shoot him!
Sandman (2ND ENCOUNTER): This fight is a little less frustrating than the Lizard, but it's harder and slightly fairer.
You have to activate one switch and then another to reach Sandman with water, allowing you to attack him.
What makes this fight difficult AGAIN is that he hits very hard, while you deal very little damage even when he's vulnerable.
The fight is long and a little boring. Honestly, I find Shocker more interesting and even more difficult!
6TH BOSS
Dr. Octopus: Well, this is the most boring boss in the first game!
You simply pull a few switches to make Octopus vulnerable, attack him, and repeat the process.
At least his second attack pattern is interesting, but overall, the fight is pretty boring.
Electro: For me, this is clearly the hardest boss in either of the two games!
Just like his friend, Electro is extremely resistant, and you have to hit him a lot to defeat him.
To do that, you have to reach his platform. Personally, I find the easiest strategy is to use your Web to reach the ceiling, then kick him off the platform and hit him before he can push you away.
Even though the fight feels a little unfair, it's still interesting because Electro's attacks are unpredictable, and he hits extremely hard. On top of that, you also have to deal with beams that make the fight even more difficult at certain points!
The hardest part is repeatedly reaching his platform without taking too much damage. And trust me, on Hard mode, this is a real challenge!
FINAL BOSS
Carnage: I have to say, I LOVE this boss!
He's scary, psychotic, badass, and has some seriously freaky quotes!
Carnage looks extremely difficult at first, but once you understand what to do, he's actually manageable.
Your goal is to push Carnage into the middle of the room so that he takes damage. The problem is that he hits VERY hard, and it's extremely difficult to approach him before he hits you first. He also has a powerful long-range attack!
Here's my strategy: when he comes toward you, shoot a little Web at him. Don't use too much, because he'll break free almost immediately, but it'll buy you a little time before he attacks.
Then grab him, turn him toward the middle of the room, and use the push kick.
Be quick, though, because he'll move away from you and counterattack if you take too long!
Once he's in the middle, wait for him to take damage. When the sound stops, don't keep shooting Web at him continuously, or you'll run out of Web fluid.
Instead, shoot Web at him, let him break free, and shoot again. Repeat this without stopping to keep him in place while conserving your Web fluid!
Monster Ock: A very interesting final boss!
Here, your goal is to run away. Surprisingly, this makes for an interesting fight, and it makes sense because I don't think anyone could stand a chance against a symbiote-controlled Doctor Octopus!
Still, once you understand what to do, the fight isn't particularly difficult, even though it takes a long time.
---
SECOND GAME
Mega Electro: I'm not saying he's easy, but personally, I find the regular Electro harder to defeat!
Here, you mostly have to be patient and precise. You have to make him throw lightning at specific spots, then you can hit him with a projectile Web attack just ONE TIME before repeating the process.
That's why you have to be very patient!
Just be careful: I know you can kick or punch him on Easy mode, but on Hard mode, you'll take damage if you try that.
He also has several powerful attacks, so watch out!
---
CONCLUSION
For me, both games are amazing, with fantastic bosses!
However, I still feel that the bosses in the second game are a little unfair and take much longer to defeat. That's why I consider them harder than the ones in the first game.
What do you think? Do you agree that the bosses in the second Spider-Man game on PS1 are harder than those in the first one? Which boss gave you the most trouble on Hard mode?

Itโs funny how even 25 years ago, people thought modern games were going downhill. It gives me some good perspective looking through the Penny Arcade 2001 run.

Either of these discs a 'Greatest Hits' disc?
Just as the title says, I managed to collect 2 loose copies of Cool Boarders 4 before I decided to catalog my collection and couldn't figure out if either of these is a greatest hits or what the difference actually is besides the color and 989 logo on the left being replaced with the Song logo on the right
VLC plugin to play PSF, PSF2, miniPSF and miniPSF2 music
I've always been a fan of music in the PSF (PlayStation 1) and PSF2 (PlayStation 2) formats, as well as their variants miniPSF and miniPSF2, but their compatibility with modern players isn't ideal. Thatโs why Iโve released this plugin which allows them to be played directly in VLC. Iโve only tested it with version 3.0.23 on Ubuntu 26.04, but Iโd appreciate it if you could provide feedback on other flavors for Debian 12/13 distributions (amd64 and arm64), Fedora 43/44 (amd64 and aarch64), and Windows (x86_64). Itโs also available as an APT and DNF repository or as a raw .so file.

PSone Official LCD Screen issue
Hi guys I donโt suppose anybody could help me. I got this screen about 6 months ago and Iโve come to use it again and itโs now not working. The backlight is present, along with the sound but the console output is not. Iโve made sure itโs not the capacitors in the console and as you can see on the TV itโs working fine. I recently learnt that the screen requires a 3amp Adapter I never got this with the screen and have been using the 2amp adapter. before I go back to refund it is there anything I could do to repair?

What's your favorite 'forgotten' PSX game?
Mine's Motor Toon Grand Prix 2 (or just Motor Toon Grand Prix for NTSC). It already felt like I was the only one playing this game in the 90's and I never heard anyone about it around me (except on the internet). Fun fact, this 3D cartoon Mario Kart-like game was created by the same team who later created Gran Turismo, and contains an unlockable concept version of the track High Speed Ring, which was based on the first level Toon Island II.
What was your favorite hidden gem?

[PS1] Spongebob Squarepants - 7 Episodes (No VCD Adapter Needed)
I've thrown together a CUE/BIN that can be emulated or burned to CD and played on actual hardware. Each episode uses the PlayStation's native video encoder - often used for game cutscenes and intros. I recommend playing this on a CRT to obfuscate some of the compression artifacts.
It comes with 7 early SpongeBob Squarepants episodes (Help Wanted, Reef Blower, Pizza Delivery, Ripped Pants, Frankendoodle, Bubble Buddy and Band Geeks) - as well as some misc. early ads and an excerpt from the SNL bit featuring Tom Kenny.
Extra bonus - 'Help Wanted' retains the original show introduction when the pilot first aired in 1999.
Controls:
LR1 skips between episodes, LR2 rewinds/fast-forwards, Triangle/Start goes to the main menu, X/Select plays, pauses and completes menu selections.
Nothing revolutionary, but I've always wanted to get custom FMV on the PlayStation without the use of a VCD add-on:

Duckstation and BITFUNX PSxMemCard PS1, is superior for installing unirom onto your PSX
Start by plugging in you BITFUNX PSxMemCard PS1 into the second mem slot, with a working mini sd inserted, it will automatically set it up( It is important to note that this exact mem card is needed because it reads mcd files as real mem cards for your ps1) now opening your emulator you will want to use your ps1's bios and set your mem card to shared between all games and make a mcd file if one does not auto make, then open the unirom cue/disk image and go through with normal mem card installation making sure you use mem slot 2 when installing freepsxboot, then grab the mcd file that was written with unirom, and open the SD card of your BITFUNX PSxMemCard PS1 memcard on your pc, you will open the folder titled "MemoryCards" then "PS1" and finally "Card1" importing your duckstation mcd file into the folder with the auto made mcd from the BITFUNX PSxMemCard PS1 card, copy the name of the auto made mcd and delete it making sure you have its name copied and rename your imported mcd to the copied name, now putting it back into your BITFUNX PSxMemCard PS1 you can put it into the second mem slot and boot unirom without using the disk swap technique, I don't know if this was already discovered as I did it because I couldn't time the disk swap right

Non-gamer trying to find gift for gamer hubby PLZ HELP
Super new to Reddit in general and I am NOT a tech or gaming person so bear with me. Iโm wanting to get my husband an original PlayStation for Christmas. He is always talking about how he wished he had one so our kids can play the games he used to play growing up. Example: our daughter loves A Bugs Life and he used to play that game when he was a kid. Iโve found some on EBay that are reasonably priced but I know Iโm gonna need a special adapter to play it on our tv. From what Iโve read, it wonโt look very good unless you have some specific type of adapter or something? I need to know EXACTLY what I need to order. Explain it to me like Iโm 5. We have a brand new Samsung 4K miniLED tv if that helps?

My full review of floating runner
The Endboss 1 of 10...
Who knows that knows why this is now my lowest rankest game of all Ps1 games I played this far (19.01.1996)
But seriously, this isn't just the worst designed end boss I have played on the Ps1 this far. It might is one of the worst bosses in all of retro gaming. Especially for this game.
It already was a very subpar platformer but this boss. Oh boy how did Sony allowed this? This game was supposed to be a big hit and not just some shovelware they not cared about.
