Game Appreciation: Way of the Samurai #3
Way of the Samurai is an absolute masterclass in how to do a short game right. A single playthrough wraps up in just a couple of hours, but the insane amount of branching paths packed into that small runtime is mind-blowing. Every single choice, dialogue option, or unexpected clash completely alters how the whole narrative unfolds.
The combat itself is so satisfying really, and requires actual focus instead of mindless button-mashing. Collecting different Weapons, and mastering tons of movesets, and timing your parries or positioning just right gives every single duel a different aesthetics. you get hooked from the very first sword clash to the end.
It remains such a wonderfully quirky, beloved hidden gem, or I say it's a Cult Classic. Because the scale is so tight and focused, the incredible replayability means you'll constantly want to jump right back in to try completely different choices and uncover every possible outcomes.
Drop your thoughts......
And Thanks.

Bought a cheap $20 HDTV off eBay and replaying FFX for the first time in decades
I don't have CRT money so I figured a small sized screen would look decent...and it does! I got laid off today so I'm going to spend the night just having a nostalgic night of gaming. I haven't played this game since it came out so I forgot mostly everything that happened.

Finally got these!
I finally have the phisical version of these games! I'm so happy! I also have the digital ps3 versions, but having the real thing in your hands is a completly different feeling! The Jak and Daxter games are also going help me learn more lenguagues since the ps2 versions have more lenguages than the ps3 versions!

Best PS2 game?
My opinion, the Singstars and Simpsons road rage (very much biased)

My local Charity shop finds
During my recent visit to a local charity shop, I discovered these items, each complete with manuals and discs. This is the second occasion I have come across 'Manhunt' at a charity shop; previously, I acquired both 'Manhunt' and 'Manhunt 2' simultaneously.

MY PS2 IS ALIVE!
I recently made a post here on the subreddit asking if it was worth fixing. I bought what I needed and now it works perfectly. I almost cried listening to the GTA Vice City theme song.

Look at this beauty
After completing NFS1 in a week, I found this beauty in the 2nd hand game shop.
The challenge, to not buy another game until each is complete

Picked these two PS2 games up in a charity shop today. Anyone know much about them?
Picked up Gitaroo Man and Rogue Galaxy from a local charity shop today for £33 for the pair.
They've actually been sitting in the shop for a while, but they were asking a fortune, so I left them. Went back today and the prices had dropped, so decided to take a chance.
I'll be honest, I know next to nothing about either game!
What surprised me was the condition. Both look practically brand new. The discs are absolutely spotless, the manuals look like they've never been opened, and Gitaroo Man even has its original unused KOEI customer questionnaire tucked inside.
Considering they're both around 20 years old, I genuinely don't think I've seen many PS2 games in better condition. Absolutely love the artwork in Gitaroo Man...
Anyone played either of these? Are they actually any good, or have I just bought two nice-looking additions to the collection? 😂
Also curious if £33 for the pair was a decent deal and whether Gitaroo Man is particularly collectable. Never really heard much about it before today.

How do I know if my ps2 slim is scratching my discs?
Recently I got my ps2 slim (77k) but just now I discovered that the disc scratching issue is pretty common, and I was wondering if there is any way to tell beforehand if your console does that or not, some signs of something similar so that I can take precautions of any type.

Hello everyone. I’ve been away for a while, but I’ve resumed my marathon. *Scarface* kept me busy, but I’ve finally managed to finish it—after twenty years.

Is there supposed to be something there?
I decided to open up my ps2 (The disc drive was not working) and I decided to take out the network adapter and there were to ports that had nothing on it

Is it dead, Jim?
Tried to fix the laser on my ps2, changed the resistance, ribbon cable came loose (tried to attatch picture, won't work sorry.). Pushed it back in, now discs won't spin at all. Shame, but I can still run backups off usb or hard drive. Pull ribbon cable back out to make sure that's the problem, confirmed. Push ribbon cable back in. Now, for no reason, I have NO SIGNAL on the TV. Absolutely nothing. Fan spins up and nothing else. Hit reset, nothing. Turn off and on, nothing. Eject button, nothing. Had to push disc tray back in. Is there any hope, or anything I can do, please?

fat ps2 only plays sound through component
i got a component cable for my ps2 but despite changing the video setting i can't get an image, the cable worked on a ps2 slim and ps3, i tested the continuity of the av port and i get a distorted image if i put one of the video cables on the yellow jack instead. composite works fine so it isn't a gpu issue either, i have no idea what else it could be atp

Harvesting an HDD for use in a Fat PS2
I have an aftermarket network adaptor, a SATA to USB adaptor, a MacBook Air from 2019, a bunch of screwdrivers, a USB hub, a Dell Latitude E6410 with a working WD Black hard drive and a Fat PS2. My mac is able to recognize the Dell's hard drive when it's removed from the computer. Is there any reason I would not be able to use the Dell's hard drive as my PS2 hard drive? I don't have any qualms about killing my Latitude; it's good for OPLManager and nothing else, and I've since switched to OrbitPs2Manager. Whatever effort the process takes is worth it for opportunity to spend zero money to run games off of a hard drive, in my estimation. But I figured I'd check if I've overlooked something that makes this project impossible or dangerous.

PS2 to HDMI converter or Retrotink?
Hello all,
Forgive me, this probably has been asked a million times...
I'm getting a PS2 for nostalgia reasons, but I don't own a CRT and getting one won't be possible. I want to use either my 1440p PC monitor, or my 4K Samsung TV with HDMI with it.
There are a lot of options out there, and having a hard time deciding what is worth it, and what is overkill?
Option 1: Get a cheap PS2 to HDMI converter such as this: https://www.amazon.com/Kaico-Playstation-Converter-Component-Adaptor/dp/B06XBV1L8Q
Option 2: Get a good quality component cable, and get a Component to HDMI upscaler: this https://8bitmods.com/hd-retrovision-playstation-2-3-ps2-ps3-premium-ypbpr-component-cable/ plus this; https://u2l.ai/elnl52
Option 3: Get a Retrotink 5x pro: https://www.retrotink.com/shop/retrotink-5x-pro
Which option should I go for? I'm not a die hard retro enthusiast, but purely playing PS2 for nostalgic purposes. The Retrotink is obviously most expensive, but is it really noticeably better? What does it do in layman terms that the cheaper component to HDMI upscalers don't?
Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction!

Running low on shelf space. Do you keep duplicates or move them along?
Sourcing inventory for my store means I end up with stacks of random media. Lately I keep finding PS2 games mixed into bulk lots. Most are common sports titles but occasionally I hit something solid like a complete copy of Smuggler's Run or a decent racing game. The problem is my shelf is full and I keep pulling titles to keep instead of selling them. I have three copies of Black now sitting in different conditions and it feels ridiculous to hoard them when someone could actually be playing the games. My instinct is to hold onto the best conditioned ones and flip the rest but part of me wonders if there is any reason to keep duplicates beyond trade bait. Do you guys keep multiple copies of the same game for different setups or is that just pure hoarding behavior? Curious how other people handle this when they stumble across the same titles over and over. The practical side of me says move the extras and fund the next purchase but the collector side wants a backup in case one disc fails.
