Advice Wanted Baseboard nail holes filler? I want this to look like glass

Post image
19 Upvotes

I am remodeling my bathroom and doing the basic trim. Basebord and door casing. I decided to miter around the stubout for the toilet and now i want to fill the holes, and seams/cuts with something that i can sand and make them disappear.

I have used mh ready patch before and liked it but want other suggestions before i use it again.

Any tips on filling it and making these miters look great. And yes. It's behind the toilet and no one will ever see it.

Thanks

Patching a few areas around the house and have flashing.

Is orange peel spray the answer? Never used it so advice here would be great - dial it to Fine and apply with circular motions?

Much help appreciated!

Advice Wanted What products should I use?

My exterior metal French doors are peeling bad. Either the previous owner did a landlord special, or I messed up the paint by letting 30 second house wash sit for too long. Either way I've got a situation now and don't know what type of paint would be best to prevent peeling again.

Do I completely strip the paint with chemicals? Or just sand it down? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Title: Can water leave a stain on a matte wall? Not sure what to do now

Hi guys, I need some advice because I honestly have no idea about painting or DIY stuff lol.

I have this peach/salmon orange wall in my living room, its matte and has a bit of texture. There was a tiny black mark just below a picture frame so I tried to clean it with a microfiber cloth and deionized water. I thought this was a pretty harmless way to clean it but now I have a dark vertical line going down the wall, almost like a little water streak. The wall was dry before and its been around 24 hours and it still looks pretty much the same.

I really didnt know you could mess up a wall just by doing this, maybe this is a stupid mistake but well, here we are haha. I've taken the picture off the wall to let it dry and I havent tried anything else because I'm worried I'll make it worse.

Do you think I should just leave it alone for a few days and see what happens? Or is this the kind of thing that needs to be repainted? I'm not really a handy person and I have no experience painting walls, so I'm not sure if trying to fix it myself is a good idea or if I should just get a painter to look at it.

The colour is kind of a peachy orange and the wall has a matte textured finish, so I'm also worried that touching up just that little area will leave a different colour or texture and look even worse. Would it be possible to repair just that spot or would the whole wall need painting?

I could always put the picture back and cover it up but honestly I'd rather not do that unless its the only realistic option.

I've attached some photos of the living room and the mark itself. Any advice would be appreciated, especially from people who know more about this stuff than me. Thanks!

Advice Wanted Spraying deadflat matt F&B Stiffkey Blue

I’ve got a quick shot 2 spray gun that I’ve recently starting using and have seen some great results with it.

However when it comes to spraying F&B stiffkeyblue dead flat Matt. I’ve been having problems getting it to spray nicely. It just seems to spray a thick thin line of paint no matter the setting.

I have two stock tips that came with gun which both seem to not perform well. Potentially buying a different tip could be the answer or maybe the gun is simply not powerful enough for this particular paint ?

Advice Wanted Sherwin Williams Emerald Sheen

Painting a bedroom Naval by Sherwin Williams. Store employee recommend the emerald line for deep dark colors. What sheen would be best? Typically I’d choose eggshell but in that line my options are flat, matte, satin and semi gloss. Not sure between matte and satin. I’ll also be doing the trim in the same color and the doors. Should those be in a glossier sheen than the walls?

Advice Wanted Wood filler for acorn woodpecker holes or caulk

Thumbnail

I would’ve expected all wood filler, but for some reason the contractor I hired used wood filler for one of the holes, and caulking for nearly all the rest of them. He used wood filler on the larger hole, but it creates a nice flush painting surface. The caulking kind of sinks in and leaves a divot, dimple. Are they being cheaper? Is there something I’m not aware of? I would expect cock to only be used for some kind of joint repair, but I don’t know. Am I right to ask? None of the holes actually go all the way through, they only penetrate about 3/4 of an inch

Advice Wanted Pinstripe cabinet paint

TL:DR. How do you pinstripe in a clean way.
Update: This is a surprisingly wholesome thread.

My brother is way older than me and isn’t a Reddit guy, but I was trying to show him that Reddit can really help with nearly any question you have about anything. He thinks that this is too niche, but I told him there is no such thing on Reddit lol, but he is a painter. He’s been painting cabinets and houses for about 10 years. He’s really good at it. He charges a lot, but you get what you pay for, he is trying to do pen striving for the first time ever, and he cannot figure it out. The corners keep coming out messy, my brother is good on his words, so worst case scenario, he just won’t do the penstripping and will refund the money. But has anyone ever done this, and are there any tips he could be missing?

The Zoom in is what he is trying to replicate, the handheld one is his attempt, and he says it took him all day. I don’t always expect kindness, but please only ask if you have legitimate advice and not “this isn’t for him” i’ll potentially show him the comments if things go well, I know I can delete, but still.

Advice Wanted Fence Paint Recommendations

I have a 4 board horse fence I’m thinking about painting white in NC (mildew is a bit of a problem on existing white painted outdoor surfaces).

Any recommendations on brand, qualities etc?

I’d likely pressure wash once a year as part of routine maintenance.

Advice Wanted How to paint over lathe and plaster walls

Thumbnail

Our house was built in 1910. It has lathe and plaster walls. I just removed the overlying wallpaper and see there are many cracks and fissures along the walls. Some of them will get spackling to fill in bigger cracks. But realistically with the amount of space we need to cover in the next two months (and more significant renovations that need to be addressed before I pop out our first baby December 30th), gold standard techniques like skim coating is probably not an option.

Does a longer paint roller nap cover irregular surfaces better?

Does flat or matte paint sheen work better here?

Etc. etc.

Thanks for the advice!

Hired someone to paint my walls. Tiny paint dust/sand particles on wall after fresh paint. Why did this happen and is it acceptable? He did 2 coats and sanded the walls. He's coming back today to finish another room. Is there a fix for this?
