Base Game Appreciation/Discussion Potential plot hole discussion Spoiler

• Upvotes

I was talking with a buddy who just finished the game and he brought up an interesting point, why didn’t the Nomai ever make an attempt to return to the vessel?

Obviously, Dark Bramble is incredibly dangerous to traverse, but the Nomai are willing to take considerable risks if there’s a chance of making a scientific discovery. We’re talking about a civilization that was willing to build a machine designed to blow up their own sun in pursuit of the Eye. Surely attempting to salvage their original spacecraft would have been worth considering, especially after they learned that the anglerfish are completely blind. When the Interloper entered the solar system, the first thing they did was throw caution to the wind and investigate it, despite having no idea what they might find or how dangerous it could be. It just seems odd that they would never even attempt to investigate or study the dark bramble, even though it contains some of the most remarkable features of any celestial body in the solar system.

At worst, they lose a couple of dudes to an anglerfish, but at best, they recover a communications tool that could potentially be used to reach out for help, or even a repairable warp drive that could allow them to escape the solar system and eventually return with additional resources and support.

What do you guys think? Am I missing something in the lore that explains why they never attempted it, or do you think it's a fair question?

Base Fan Art - OC I made a documentary about Planet Nine with Outer Wilds in my head the whole time Spoiler

Outer Wilds is probably my favourite game of all time, and like a lot of you I spent ages after finishing it watching other people play it for the first time. I recently started a small YouTube channel making calm documentaries about theories that haven't been proven yet, and sometimes how one finally got proven. It's not only about space, but I'm really into space, so naturally a lot of the videos end up being about it.

When I made one about Planet Nine, a planet that might be out past Neptune that nobody has managed to find, I realised halfway through that I was basically making it with Outer Wilds in my head the whole time. It's hard to explain but the feeling of looking up at the sky from Timber Hearth and wanting to know what's out there, the Hearthians curiosity leading to their space program, that's what I was going for. One of the chapters actually opens with a quote from the game about the Eye (because of a parallel I realized with what we know about Planet Nine), and the music under that chapter is a bit of a nod to Giant's Deep, the underwater part. It's intentionally slow, and kind of mysterious and dreamy, so I'm not sure it's for everyone, but I kept thinking that some people from this community might enjoy it for the same reasons I enjoyed making it.

The narration is a synthetic voice, but the research, script, visuals, direction, and music choices are all mine. I hope this is okay to share here, I'm really not trying to advertise anything, just thought some of you might get the same feeling from it that I got from the game. Would genuinely love to hear what you think.

Wow Spoiler

I did NOT expect this.

I played Hollow Knight and Subnautica before this, so I thought I already knew the “explore weird world and slowly figure shit out” type of game.

Nope.

I’m like 4 hours into Outer Wilds and I’ve barely explored Brittle Hollow, found the Hanging City, the Black Hole Forge, the Tower of Quantum Knowledge, saw some completely insane stuff happen, and I’m already hooked.

There have been multiple moments where I just stopped and went “what the fuck is going on” and then 10 minutes later something suddenly made sense.

And now I finally understand why everyone is so insanely strict about spoilers.

Like yeah, of course you don’t want spoilers. The whole game IS finding things out.

I feel like I’ve seen almost nothing and it’s already a complete banger.

Btw, do you have any suggestions for how to play the game?

Mod Announcement New Rule: Rule 8 - No Piracy, No "Freebie" Requests, No Sale or Resale

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to inform the sub that there is a new rule in our rules list. Please be aware that this is not a new rule as these situations have always been moderated the same way in the sub. However, for clarity, I have added this to the official list of rules here!

The rule reads as follows:

No Piracy, No "Freebie" Requests, Sales Must Follow Mobius's Policies

The devs worked hard to create a game that people love, and deserve to be compensated for their work. This rule includes but is not limited to:

  • No Pirating link shares or requests
  • Sale of unlicensed merch must follow Mobius's policies
    • * edit: those with permission from Mobius to sell in bulk or who follow Mobius' created content sales policy may sell the things they've created here! See below for details!
  • No requests for gifted games, free content that players would normally pay for, etc
  • No scalping (selling content for higher than market value)

Please note that giveaways, reduced-cost resales, and other situations are allowed at mod discretion.

All posts of this nature or that could possibly fall under this rule will be up to moderator discretion, and failure to follow this rule could lead to being banned from the sub.

Mobuis has an official policy on fan-made artwork sales, and provided your post follows these policies, it will be allowed!

  • Do not use official art or assets from our games in your sold fan works.
  • Do not make or sell fan works that are significantly similar to official items offered by our partners: link.
  • You are not permitted to mass-distribute, mass-produce or manufacture fan works without our express written permission.
  • You are not permitted to set up crowdfunding (e.g. Kickstarter) for projects or products using or relating to our IP.
  • We reserve the right to stop or remove any works at any time at our sole discretion for any or no reason.

Please contact the mods with any questions.

Millions of people will now never get to play the game... He doesn't even put spoiler warnings on the titles, I wouldn't be mad if he said "Don't watch if you haven't played"

Edit: Alright man I get it I don't have a very mainstream opinion

Modding Outer Wilds Racing?

Has anyone made a sort of racing mod for Outer Wilds?

I was talking to a friend about the new Tesla car and how it's a kind of a joke and that the best thing to come from it will be the GTA parody version to play with in GTA 6.

But it got me thinking about how fun it would be to have a racing game that properly uses 3D space and thrusters for manoeuvring a course.

Made me think of how fun an Outer Wilds Kart mod would be. You could have Suit races and Ship races. Use all the current assets to make themed courses out of and all that. Use different gravities to put an effect on different tracks or sections of track. Make the ghost matter become like, clouds that slow you down etc.

Im really hoping this mod already exists and someone can point me in the right direction but if not, maybe I've provided some inspiration for those more talented than I!

Just finished the game Spoiler

I really enjoyed Outer Wilds. The mystery, the exploration, the way everything comes together, and especially the message at the end all worked for me. But I kept running into this disconnect between the scientific concepts the game uses and the actual world those concepts supposedly exist in.

I think my biggest issue is that the game requires a sort of continuous willful suspension of scientific disbelief. It feels like a fairytale in disguise. It uses the language and aesthetics of astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and space exploration, but a lot of those concepts seem to exist primarily as puzzle mechanics or ways to move the story forward. I'm not expecting a scientifically perfect simulation, obviously, but I kept wanting to know how these things actually work within the world.

How did the Hearthians evolve into a spacefaring civilization? Where are the resources, infrastructure, industry, and supply chains supporting their technology? What does their ecosystem even look like? The village has, what, a dozen people living in wooden houses, and somehow there's a functional space program. I know the answer is that none of this is really what the game is about, but I couldn't stop thinking about it.

And the scale is a big part of it. The solar system feels less like an actual universe and more like a kids' diorama, with little planets arranged around a sun. You can zip between them so quickly that space loses a lot of its sense of vastness and danger. The game wants to evoke cosmic awe, but the world itself feels almost comically small.

I get that the scale is intentional. It makes the exploration manageable and lets the developers handcraft every location, clue, and interaction. And it works extremely well for the mystery they're trying to tell. But I found myself wishing the world had more depth beyond what was necessary to make the puzzles work.

Interestingly, No Man's Sky gives me much more of that feeling of being in a huge, interconnected universe, even though it has plenty of its own abstractions and isn't exactly a rigorous scientific simulation either.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I love the way Outer Wilds uses scientific curiosity as a method of exploration, but I wanted more of the science to extend into the worldbuilding itself. I wanted to think about the biological, ecological, and industrial consequences of the things the game introduces, and I often felt like the game stopped at the cool concept instead.

I'm not saying this makes the game bad. I think it's brilliant at what it sets out to do. I'm just curious whether anyone else had this experience, where they loved the story and the ideas but struggled to buy into the world as an actual place that could exist, even on its own terms.

Base Game Help - NO spoilers please! I Feel So Close Yet So Lost… Spoiler

EDIT: Solved! Thanks everyone :)

First off, plenty of spoilers ahead, so beware. I assume most people browsing this sub have finished the game, but just in case, turn away now as I’m pretty sure I’m like 95% of the way there if not more.

TLDR is that I’m pretty sure I have figured out everything except for how to get into the dang Ash Twin Project core. I’ve made it this far without looking anything up but I might just need the tiniest of hints to get me over the last hurdle here.

I have every single info card in the ship log unlocked except for the Ash Twin Project, with no more “there’s more to explore here” tags.

I have the coordinates to the eye and put together how to plug them into the vessel. I know I need an advanced warp core to power the vessel (I tried bringing a warp core from the High Energy Lab but it says “this warp core doesn’t fit”)

The ship logs for the black hole forge notes that an Advanced Warp Core was made for the ash twin project, so I know I need to get in there (the giant question mark in my ship log is a giveaway too lol). The Nomai Mines logs note that the Ash Twin Project core is fully sealed off with no physical entrances, which implies I need to warp in there somehow, but I cannot for the life of me put together where that warp pad would be.

Prior to this the Sun station was the only place I’d yet to explore so I figured that would have my answer but it turned out not to have any information I didn’t already know or hadn’t already deduced.

My best guess is the Ash Twin Project warp has something to do with the alignment angle diagram in the black hole forge and the note that the twin planets share an alignment point? But I’m not sure how that helps me get into the Ash Twin core…

I discovered this game via a random Reddit comment last month and I haven’t had to look up any hints so far which I’m proud of, but I’m at the point where I’ve spent hours trying just to figure out this last bit and I’m just going in circles. I work full time and am in a masters program and I’m a dad of a toddler so I’m getting to the point where I can’t justify spending an hour at night here and there not making progress in this game lol so as much as this feels like giving up before solving the big puzzle, I’m at my wits end.

Is there an extremely minimal hint that can push me in the right direction without spoiling anything? Am I close enough that I should just keep pushing along with no hints?

DLC Help - Hints Only! DLC Hint Spoiler

>!/Help! I’ve been playing through the dlc for the first time and I have reached a bit of a wall. These are the leads I have so far: !/<

>!/ I have found my way into the house in the shrouded woodlands but every time I explore, the door is locked behind me and I’m surrounded and kicked out of the dream. Entering it while dead doesn’t change that. I believe the secret fireplace is in the house behind the strangers. !/<

>!/ I also found the mural I need to get behind in the endless canyon. I found a stranger watching a slideshow I can distract with my lantern but it doesn’t seem to make him leave that location, just turn off the slide and then back on shortly afterwards. I think I need to lure him to open some door I don’t have access to yet but I’m not sure how. !/<

>!/ The slide burning room taught me that I can enter the dream world while dead to silence the alarms and that lets me disable one of the chains in the sealed vault. I think the secrets to undoing the other two are behind the two puzzles I’ve attempted above. Not sure if I’ve just missed any hints or need to do more exploring. I’m not sure where else I haven’t explored yet, but any help is appreciated and I’m happy to provide any more detail in the comments! !/<

Base Game Help - NO spoilers please! Am I the only one that is this bad at steering?

I cannot land on any of the smaller, faster objects to save my life.

I know the autopilot. I know landing mode. I can read the trajectory arrows. I've watched tutorials. Everything.

I am try to land on the thing (no spoilers) orbiting Giant's Deep. I must have spent an hour trying to get on that thing.

It's the same with everything else. I can land on the planets ok, but I haven’t been able to progress and am about to quit the game. Whatever the amazing story is, I'll never see it because I'm just frustrated. I wish the game had some kind of easy mode for people who really suck at flying.

Help me find a cover of End Times please Spoiler

When I first played the game I spent months listening to its OST and I stumbled upon this End Times cover on youtube.

I wouldn't be able to describe the actual music but I distinctly remember that it had the new universe art (the one shown post credits) as background and probably thumbnail. Another detail I remember is that the song started at a very slow pace, slower than the original. Last thing I remember is that at some point the subtitles read "AGGRESSIVE SYNTH SOLO" (and it really was an aggressive synth solo).

I've been replaying the game with my bf and I went looking for the video on youtube but it's gone now and I need to listen to it again! Does anyone know this cover and where to find it?

The eye of the universe looks a lot like the figure you get when you draw lines between all the stars in the constellations and zoom out.

Atleast it looks very similar to me but i might be delusional

OST Musical Cover Outer Wilds Orchestral/Emotional Cover

Hey everyone! A few days ago I finished my orchestral cover of the main theme from Outer Wilds. This game and its music mean so much to me so I really wanted to make my own version with a lot of love. I know I could never top the original but I put my heart into it.

Just so you know the music is 100 percent human made, no AI at all. And as a little detail I made it so it starts and ends the exact same way so it loops perfectly, just like the game (Yeah a bit cheesy I know).

Youtube link: Outer Wilds | Emotional Version

Quick thing about usage, please do not reupload it or distribute it or claim it anywhere. But you can totally use it in edits, memes, videos and stuff like that (mention if possible), and of course you can listen to it or add it to your playlist, that would actually make me super happy. I will also put it on Spotify and all that in a couple weeks. Hope you guys like it and let me know what you think.

Base and DLC Appreciation/Discussion Does Brittle Hollow explain the mechanics of the "big thing"? Spoiler

Specifically, does the player's experience of going through the black hole explain the mechanics of time travel as presented in the game?

I've always wondered exactly what is happening from an existential standpoint when your character dies/the loop ends. When your character's memories are sent into the ATP back in time, can it be said that the character's consciousness is essentially traveling as well? Or, is the ATP/time travel in general essentially creating an entirely brand new universe where another version of you exists, and suddenly the memories are incepted into this new version of you that you now play as?

The High Energy Lab doesn't give us a clear answer on this. There, we can simulate from an outside perspective that by launching a probe into the black hole, it arrives slightly earlier out of the white hole than it leaves, allowing you to see both versions at the same time. But we can't say for sure whether (1) The same probe is temporarily existing in two spaces at once; or (2) The time travel has created a new version of the probe, which temporarily exists at the same time as the "original" probe.

However, by going through Brittle Hollow's black hole, we can experience this effect first-hand. The experience is reaching what is essentially the event horizon of the black hole, seeing a flash of white light, and then being spat out of the white hole. If we pretend we are the High Energy Lab probe, this means that we are seeing ourselves come out of the white hole, but there is a version of ourselves still entering the black hole at the same time. If someone were to "close" the Brittle Hollow/White Hole Station loop, it would result in two of us and create a paradox.

The important detail, though, is that your character's observations of the black hole cease completely when observing yourself come out of the white hole. So what does that make of the "you" that has not yet completely entered the black hole? Was that not you, just moments ago, jumping into the black hole? Yet you are now the you, observing yourself coming out of the white hole, no longer able to see the black hole and thus experiencing an entirely different stream of consciousness.

What this tells me is that time travel in Outer Wilds does not move anything at all, but is essentially a reverse cut-and-paste. It creates new matter and energy in the past, then destroys an equal amount of matter and energy in the present. This explains in part why the ATP requires so much energy - there is a very high energy cost to "front load" moving memories back in time before they are destroyed.

In other words, every time you fell through that black hole, or hell, used one of the Nomai teleporter pads, your character ceased to exist, only for a new character to take its place. You don't see the Nomai mask animation because you don't need the ATP for this to happen - you are only going back in time a fraction of a second.

As an aside, I did wonder if this is further established by the fact that when you jump into the ATP black hole and then go back, you find the prior version of yourself waiting there for you. However, this isn't concrete proof. This only establishes that the ATP black hole has both transported (1) Your memories via the masks, and (2) Your body. Theoretically, one of these could be the original "you" consciousness from the future (it can't be both because they clearly operate independently). But based on the above, I see both as new versions of your character, and the game has just decided that the player controls the character that wakes up by the fire.

Thoughts?

Base Game Help - Hints Only! Need some directions Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

Not exactly sure where to go from now. Ive fully finished the quantum moon and found the sixth location. I know that the probe tracker is inside the core of giants deep, and i can get below the current, but past that, all i know is that getting in has something to do with the jellyfish. I also know that Feldspar, the vessel and the third escape pod are all in the bramble but i dont know how to navigate it yet. Ive also been to the sun station, the black hole forge and inside of the statue workshop. I just need a nudge in the right direction towards what path i should be going for because ive run out of the “more to explore” tags.

ps: not sure if the picture helps bc its really low quality, but ill attach it anyway ::)

ppspsppsssps: also i broke space time by duplicating my little fella but i doubt that tells me anything significant
