Console Modification I turned my S Controller into a USB Controller
The cable on my controller was broken and I had all the necessary parts lying around.
Since the OG Xbox uses a regular USB signal to transfer data, all I had to do was some basic soldering. (And use some hot glue). Even the colours of the wires matched. The most tricky part was fitting everything back into the shell.
Of course you need a USB breakaway cable to connect the controller to the console, but its now much easier to find a spare cable in case something breaks again.
With the right drivers you can even hook it up to a PC. I used this Video as a guide.

Custom Build Game Vault update: play your PS1 & PS2 discs straight from the Series X drive, online play with up to 4 players, Kid mode, and your games pick up where they crashed [Xbox Series X|S Dev Mode]
**Put a PlayStation disc in your Series X. Game Vault sees it. Press A. You're playing.**
No PC. No ripping. No copying. The disc spins in the Xbox's own drive and the game runs straight from it: **PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2**, multi-disc games included.
You've probably read "the disc drive can't be used in Dev Mode." That's true for every other emulator. As far as we can find, **Game Vault is the first released app that plays PS1 and PS2 discs straight from the Series X drive.** Want a copy on your USB drive as well? Game Vault can copy the disc for you.
Game Vault is the console-style front end that turns a Dev Mode Xbox into one machine for your whole collection: original Xbox, Xbox 360, PS1, PS2, GameCube, Wii and 30+ more systems, with box art, from any USB drive or your PC.
It's **day 3 of updates** since launch, and here's everything new since the last post. **Most of it came straight from your reports, comments and Discord ideas.** Thank you!
**🌐 Play online, up to 4 players**
- **New ONLINE tab:** see open rooms and press A to join.
- **Play online in any game's details (RB):** Game Vault joins an open room for that game, or opens one for your friends. Players 2, 3 and 4 drop in.
- **Play with friends on PC:** Game Vault rooms work with RetroArch on PC.
- **PlayStation 1 online** joined NES, SNES (4 players with the multitap), Game Boy, GBA, Genesis, PC Engine, Atari, arcade and more.
- **Your privacy stays yours:** rooms show as "Game Vault 123", never your name.
**🛡️ Never lose a run**
- If a game crashes or the console closes it, Game Vault brings you right back to where you were.
- Left a game from the Home button? Game Vault asks "Pick up where you left off?"
**👨👩👧 Made for the whole family**
- **Kid mode:** a 4-button PIN, a daily play-time limit, and hiding by age rating or by hand. When time is up, the game is saved first. Nobody loses progress.
- **Who's playing?** With 2+ controllers, everyone presses A to pick their player number.
- **SURPRISE ME:** can't decide? Spin the reel and play whatever it picks.
**🎨 Make it yours**
- **Your own box art:** press Y in a game's details, then take a photo with your phone o TV in seconds.
- **Screen style:** arcade CRT for TV consoles, LCD for handhelds, sharp HD for 3D, chosen for you automatically or set it yourself.
- **Attract mode:** leave Game Vault alone and it plays full-screen gameplay of your gam
- **Controls page:** press the D-pad in a game's details to see which button does what in that game.
**📲 Send games from your phone**
Options > Network > "Send games from your phone": open the page on your phone and send gUSB drive over Wi-Fi. No PC needed.
**🎮 Plays better**
- **PlayStation 1 in HD by default:** sharper 3D with less wobble, and faster start-up.
- **Original Xbox:** smoother busy scenes and far fewer stutters, plus fixes for black screens and talking scenes.
- **Xbox 360 games straight from your PC or NAS**, no copying. 360 games now save proper
- **Multi-file CD games** (Saturn, Dreamcast) from your PC now copy completely.
- **Saturn and Sega CD BIOS files are found by themselves** on your drive, and Game Vault tells you exactly what's missing.
- **Games with accents in the name** (é, ü, ß, ™) start properly.
- **A Game Vault that freezes at start-up now fixes itself.**
- **Full console?** Archives unpack onto your USB drive instead.
**🔧 Less hassle**
- **Options in tabs** (Games / Network / Play / Console & help / Advanced).
- **New Advanced tab:** pick a BIOS or emulator per system, "Send a problem report now", "Look for missing box art", and Restore defaults.
- **Drive check:** Game Vault warns you if your USB drive is full, read-only or failing,
- **Fewer pop-ups:** only big updates pop up now. Small ones wait quietly behind RT.
- **One clear card** if a console setting is holding your games back, telling you exactly what to change.
**📱 Game Vault for Android (beta)**
- **Original Xbox games on your phone with one tap:** Game Vault installs X1 BOX for Game Vault with a free BIOS and a blank hard disk built in. Nothing to set up.
- **Saturn games in Beetle Saturn** when your Saturn BIOS is there.
- Standalone emulators start properly again, and problem reports come as a file you can send in Discord.

These are test builds, made and tested on one Series X. Lots of games run great; some still don't. Series S should work but isn't tested by us yet. The best way to help: say yes to "Help make Game Vault better?" so problem reports come in while you play. You can turn it off any time. Those reports are exactly what get games fixed. Tried it? Game Collecting What a bloody bargain!
Snatched up these 3 games from a bloke "locally" for 45 kangaroo bucks! Round trip was about 50km.
I'll chuck a photo of the rest of my "collection" too because I may as well.
10 for Star Wars
15 for Prince of Persia
20 for Max Payne
All CIB too, really nice guy. I bloody love chatting briefly about gaming and the OG Xbox to the people I buy the games off too.
It's interesting hearing why they are selling them, maybe they decided to emulate them all instead of using original hardware etc.

Scene News Haguero and Siktah were invited to Microsoft's Xbox 25th Anniversary FanFest! Here's the post.
Direct from the Xbox Scene Discord. My apologies on the formatting.
https://discord.com/channels/770816616937160745/788849843257999381/1561316317435535381
EDIT1: Added Discord link to original post.
EDIT2: Added about exchange of hardware
A PROUD MOMENT FOR THE OG XBOX SCENE!
Yesterday, @Siktah and I were fortunate enough to be invited by Microsoft to attend their Xbox 25th Anniversary FanFest, and what an incredible experience it was!
We met some amazing people from across the gaming industry, including game developers, voice actors, graphic designers, audio engineers, and many others.
But the biggest highlight was something neither of us ever expected!
We had the opportunity to sit down for a one on one discussion with Carl Ledbetter (Head of Design, Xbox Devices) and Chris Kujawski (Senior Director, Xbox Hardware Design).
We showed them some of the incredible work being done within the Xbox scene, both hardware and software, and even showcased prototype hardware from an upcoming project.
Their reaction genuinely surprised us!
Not only were they impressed, but they actually asked if the hardware was available to the public!
We explained our open source philosophy, where people can build the hardware themselves, have PCB fabrication services do it, or purchase pre built units.
They absolutely loved the concept! Especially the community driven, open source approach to both hardware and software.
🔥 THE CONVERSATION GOT EVEN MORE INTERESTING...
We took the opportunity to ask questions many in the Xbox-Scene have probably wanted to ask Microsoft for years.
We discussed XDK usage, software development, hardware modifications, and whether Microsoft might ever consider publicly releasing development tools for previous gen consoles.
I specifically asked about the original Xbox XDK, but their response caught me completely off guard.
"Why stop at the OG Xbox? Why not include the Xbox 360 as well?"
They even suggested how cool it would be if the community could access original CAD files for creating 3D printed parts and other projects.
⚠️ Before anyone gets too excited, these were simply ideas discussed during our conversation, NOT official announcements or promises from Microsoft.
However, they did say they would take our feedback back to headquarters!
We honestly expected some of these questions to be shut down or avoided, but instead we were met with genuine enthusiasm, curiosity, and openness.
And all of this happened BEFORE the main on-stage Q&A session!
THEN SOMETHING UNBELIEVABLE HAPPENED...
During the Q&A, while discussing the original Xbox, Carl Ledbetter gave a personal shout out to Siktah, myself, and everyone involved in this upcoming hardware release!
He even told everyone in attendance how impressed he was with the project and how cool it was for OG Xbox owners.
I honestly cannot put into words what that moment meant to us.
Here we were, two members of the Xbox-Scene community, attending an official Microsoft event, and the Head of Design for Xbox Devices was publicly acknowledging the work being done by our scene and friends.
At that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride.
Not just for Siktah and myself, or those involved in these hardware / software projects, but for EVERYONE who has contributed to keeping the scene alive!
The Xbox-Scene Discord community, the developers creating incredible homebrew software, the hardware modders designing and testing new solutions, the people contributing to open source projects, and everyone who has shared knowledge, helped others, or supported us throughout the years.
THIS RECOGNITION WASN'T JUST FOR US. IT WAS FOR ALL OF YOU!
For over two decades, this community has continued to innovate, preserve, and push the boundaries of a console we all love.
And yesterday, the people helping shape the future of Xbox got to see firsthand what the community preserving its past has achieved.
That's something we should ALL be incredibly proud of!
To everyone who has supported us, contributed to the scene, or helped keep the original Xbox alive...
THANK YOU! THIS MOMENT BELONGS TO ALL OF US! :xboxheart:

Ohhh And left out the most important part.. We gifted them a working prototype of hardware including exchanging contact details and what & how to install it.

Looking for old Xbox Live friends Jordan and Kevin from Louisville, KY (2004-2006)
We met playing the original Rainbow Six 3 on Xbox Live and later played a lot of Halo 2, Project Gotham Racing 2, and some MechWarrior. All of us were around 13-17 years old at the time (currently 37 myself)
My old gamertag was Snake915. Jordan's was something like Black Fox, possibly followed by numbers. I also remember two older regulars whose gamertags were something like CC88 and Buckshot Bob.
We were all into metal, especially Metallica and Lamb of God. I also remember us getting excited about Jonathan Davis from Korn being on Xbox Live for some one-off Halo 2 event. One of us actually had the account accept the request and FREAKING OUT 😅
Jordan and Kevin were real-life friends from Louisville, and I spent a lot of time gaming and joking around with Jordan in particular. We had a pretty memorable group to say the least. Just a bunch of rowdy weird teenagers lol.
I know this is a long shot after 20 years, but it any of this sounds familiar, I'd love to reconnect!
Edit: Thank you for all the recommendations, i’ve yet to sit down and do more searching but I’m still continuing to remember particular memories that might help. More so hoping if any of them search for me they find this post down the line!

Game Vault update: play while it's still searching, run properly on diagonals in original Xbox games, Xbox 360 games that set themselves up, and Game Vault for Android (beta) [Xbox Series X|S Dev Mode]
Plug in a USB stick. Your games show up with box art. Press A. That's it.
Game Vault is the console-style front end that turns a Dev Mode Xbox into one machine for your whole collection: original Xbox, Xbox 360, PS1, PS2, GameCube, Wii and 30+ more systems. Thanks to everyone who installed it and sent problem reports. Almost everything in this round came straight from your feedback.
🔥 What's new
- Play now, no waiting. Big drive? As soon as the first games are found, press A and you're in. The search carries on in the background and new games slide in when it's done. (You asked for this one!)
- Original Xbox: running on diagonals works. Modern pads don't push all the way into the corners the way the original Xbox controller did, so some games made you walk instead of run. The sticks now give the full range, just like the real thing.
- Original Xbox: xemu's menu stays out of your game. Buttons you press in xemu's menu no longer leak into the game's own pause menu.
- Xbox 360: games that need a special setting just get it. Xenia for Game Vault now switches it on by itself for those games, and only for them. Nothing to configure.
- GameCube & Wii: your controller works from the first second, so "Press any button" screens respond right away.
- No more dropping back to Dev Home. If Dolphin for Game Vault isn't installed yet, Game Vault tells you and RT installs it. The Mac setup now installs the right Dolphin too.
- Games from your PC or NAS start right away, straight from the shared folder. No copying first.
- Network setup that holds your hand. The phone page speaks your language (English, Português, Español, Français, Deutsch, Italiano), tells you exactly what to type, and tells you what to check if something's off.
- A cleaner shelf. BIOS files, emulator folders, README files and Mac "._" files no longer show up as games, and they clear out by themselves after you update.
- Way more box art. Arcade games, PlayStation / PS2 / PSP games, "(US)" files and titles with numbers in the name now find their covers, and lots of European releases get a gameplay preview.
- PS2: Game Properties works during play, so you can change a game's own settings from the pause menu.
- Atari ST and MSX pla
📱 NEW: Game Vault for Android (beta)
The same idea on your phone or handheld: your games with box art, tap to play. If a game needs an emulator, tap Install once and it starts. Our RetroArch for Android comes with every core inside, so PlayStation, PSP, N64, Dreamcast, DS, GameCube, Wii and more play right away. Emulators you already have are used first. Android 8 or newer.

How do I reorder games in UIX Lite's games list?
Title.
I've tried looking around, but my Google-fu has failed to find anyone else explaining this. My games list is mostly alphabetical, but some games are out of order - particularly when there are series of multiple entries. This kind of behavior is something I would have expected on some (for example Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is alphabetically before Splinter Cell: Pandora tomorrow), but it even does it with games like Halo and Halo 2 (Halo 2 appears first).
Is there any way for me to change the order of the list? Renaming the display name doesn't help, nor did renaming the internal XBE name via the file browser.
Running UIX Lite 0.6 on a softmod Xbox 1.0.

Console Modification Repaired a very fixable $34 Xbox only to discover it's previous owner modded it and it has hundreds if not thousands of classic games inside.
Sorry for the low quality pics, my camera is crap and these were taken hastily.
I picked up this Xbox Original for $34 at a store because I wanted to repair one to give to my nephew for his birthday. The disc tray wouldn't open and it turns out all it needed was a simple drive belt replacement. No problems. My first indication that something was strange was that the normally very spacious Xbox HDD had only half its memory blocks available.
And then, while I was testing it, I noticed the solid red light on the eject button. After a quick google, I saw this it wasn't an issue, but a sign that custom firmware was installed. After following some easy directions, I clicked RT+LT+Start+Black and it loaded me into a custom menu.
Inside this console I found emulators for a ton of classic consoles including
- All sorts of classic arcade games like Outrun
- Capcom/NeoGeo Arcade games
- Each original Atari console
- Atari Lynx
- 2 Different NES emulators
- 2 Different SNES emulators
- N64
- GameBoy
- Sega Master System
- Sega Genesis + 32x
- TurboGrafx 16
- NeoGeo
- NeoGeo CD
- NeoGeo Pocket
- Magnavox Odyssey
- Calecovision
- Intellivision
- Commodore 64
Each one of these emulators--excluding the Nintendo 64--has almost their entire North American libraries installed. And they run exceptionally well and look fantastic (pictures don't do them justice) They've fastforward and savestate capabilities along with custom modification menus and cheats. Whoever had this before me had turned this into the ultimate emulation machine but then dumped it simply because the belt drive became stretched and warped.
Keep in mind I chose this console completely at random from the 3 that were on the shelf for the same price. I have about 4 weeks until my nephew's birthday and so I'm going to absolutely wear this thing out before then. He's 13 and such a good kid--I cannot WAIT to give this to him. The only reason I'm not keeping it for myself is out of sheer principality! To keep this would render almost my entire current retro collection pointless!
My only issue is that I have absolutely no idea how UnleashX works. I tried looking up guides and tutorials and they seem really complicated and I don't have the proper hardware to connect it to PC. I'll dive into that on a later date I think.
I don't think I've ever been this lucky in my life.
