Promotional Two weeks ago my tab switcher had 14 users. Now it has 1,000+

I hate "Ctrl+tab" on chrome, I'm used to Alt+Tab on windows, so I brought it to browsers. You just click Alt+Q and you see all your tabs, across windows with previews and quick actions.

Tabatha is an MIT-licensed tab switcher for Chrome. Its content security policy is `connect-src 'none'`: it cannot send anything anywhere, which was the whole point.

That made one thing hard: knowing what goes wrong. My answer so far:
- The Chrome Web Store dashboard (installs, weekly users, languages)
- An uninstall page on the website with an optional form. The extension only opens links; anything typed goes through the site, never the extension
- GitHub issues and Reddit comments

It worked: the top uninstall answer ("previews missing or blank") turned into the main change in 1.3.5.

Extension: Chrome Web Store

I would love if people use it and give their feedbacks, on new features, how to be privacy-first, or anything you feel.

Promotional I built Snapback: a Raspberry Pi instant replay box that saves the last 30 seconds of HDMI video from your phone

Hey everyone! I’ve been working on Snapback, a DIY instant replay project built around a Raspberry Pi 5.

It keeps a rolling buffer of video and audio from an HDMI capture device. When something happens that you wish you’d recorded, grab your phone and save the last 30 seconds, or take a screenshot.

Everything runs locally on your network, with no cloud service or account required. I built it with gaming in mind, but it can also work with compatible HDMI cameras and computer output.

I’m sharing it now because I’d love feedback from people who enjoy building things like this. Curious what you’d use it for, what hardware you’d try, and what could make setup easier.

Thanks for taking a look!

I’d love feedback, ideas, or contributions. If nothing else, a star on GitHub would mean a lot and help others find the project. Thanks for taking a look!

Promotional Open-sourced GroupedScheduling — group-aware async scheduling for .NET with build-time IL weaving (MIT)

Released an MIT-licensed .NET library for attribute-driven, group-aware async scheduling. You mark methods with [ScheduleGroup]; a build-time IL weaver injects scheduling so callers keep normal await. One NuGet brings runtime + analyzers + weaver (no Fody).

Repo: https://github.com/ChronosDevZero/grouped-scheduling

Happy to take feedback from other OSS maintainers.

Discussion Vibe Coding Security

The security of open source applications was already criticized enough before AI, but now legitimate concerns can be made. The effect is not as pronounced as it will be in the future, since many stable projects still have enough "manual" developers left on their team to reasonably understand the submissions that are being made. But what happens when vibe coders start to take over these apps? How can those that do not understand the code that is being submitted reasonably validate that malware is not being added? It would be trivial for a state actor to mask malware and get it past a reviewer that has little to no understanding of the language itself (even if it takes multiple submissions).

Several of these viral vibe coded apps have hundreds of contributors and are merging large PRs at a pace that simply does not allow for a proper analysis to occur (security or otherwise). It's more like, "test merge the code", "looks like it fixes the problem", "approve PR". How can companies, or individuals for that matter, that are concerned about the security and integrity of their systems ever use these applications?

I know the some will say, "run it in a VM" or "it's your choice to download it", but those aren't practical solutions. All it will take is a few high profile security incidents with these apps for people to start questioning the open source model with vibe coding.

Promotional So are we all okay with AI reverse engineered apps calling themselves open source?

ArtCraft gained a lot of steam lately with their AI reverse engineered versions of Photoshop and Adobe suite apps.

While they are very obviously reverse engineered, they claim it is a "clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Photoshop" which by very definition means "without ever looking at or copying the original source code".

Fireship even did a video covering these apps, in which he finds their apps are barely usable, and filled with bugs and usability issues.

Today I came across "TraceDraw" which is, again, a total ripoff of CorelDraw. While I'm not on the side of large predatory corporations like Adobe charging ridiculous monthly subscription fees, I can totally understand the pain a company like Corel might feel seeing a ripoff of their 30+ year old product lovingly created and maintained by a team of skilled HUMANS. And once again, this repo claims it is a "clean-room" implementation. I find it ironic how only the reverse engineered apps bother to add this oddly specific disclaimer.

So are we, as a community, okay with these new breed of AI reverse engineered apps claiming that they are "open source"?

(Note: I'm not questioning their legality, just how ethical it is)

Hi guys, I created Titan, a wasm module that outperforms other open-source excel formula engines. Titan compiles formulas into bytecode and stores cells in contiguous 32×32 Struct-of-Arrays chunks inside WASM linear memory. No JavaScript object churn, no GC pauses, and sub-millisecond reactive updates. Finally got around writing some docs for it *sigh. Let me know what you think. Cheers!

Promotional Open Co-Scientist: an open-source recreation of Google's AI Co-Scientist — looking for help and feedback

Thumbnail

Open Co-Scientist is an open-source recreation of Google's AI Co-Scientist. It's a multi-agent system that generates research hypotheses, critiques them, ranks them in an Elo tournament, and evolves the winners.

What it does

You describe a research goal in chat. The system then:

  • Searches literature for grounding
  • Generates hypotheses with a team of agents
  • Runs pairwise debates and ranks the ideas by Elo
  • Evolves the top ideas
  • Checks every citation and writes a final report

I'm looking for feedback and help developing this. I believe it could be a great contribution to the open-source AI for Science community, and I want to make the most of it!

Promotional Introducing G-remap: the private alternative to Gmaps

G-remap is a lightweight Linux bash script that quietly swaps your Google Maps links for Brave Maps — no extensions, no browser tinkering. Just paste a Google Maps URL, and the script parses it with Python, converts the coordinates and bounds into the current Brave Maps format, copies the new link to your clipboard, and launches it in Brave.

It's built for privacy-first users who don't want Google tracking their location clicks. The tool uses zenity for friendly dialog prompts, handles short-link expansion via curl, and auto-detects Brave across Debian, Fedora, Arch, OpenSUSE, Flatpak, and standalone installs. If your clipboard isn't available, it still prints the converted URL so you're not stuck.

Why it's useful:

  • zero config required
  • Supports all major Linux distros out of the box
  • Graceful fallbacks for browser detection and clipboard tools
  • GPL-3.0 — truly free and open source

TL;DR: It's a one-click privacy bridge between Google Maps and Brave Maps, written in pure bash + Python, designed to be simple, fast, and distro-agnostic. A small tool, but a smart one for anyone trying to break out of Google's ecosystem.

Promotional I got tired of running 3 Steam tools at once, so i made one app for all of it

I used ArchiSteamFarm for cards, HourBoostr for hours, and SAM when i saw a game with 300 hours and zero achievements. Three programs, three windows, and each one need its own setup.

So I made one thing that does all of it. You extract the folder and run it, thats all. No installer, no Steam client open in the background.

What is inside right now: card farming, hour boosting, achievements, inventory and market selling, keys and chat. It can run a few accounts at the same time too.

It started as a thing only for me, but maybe someone else have the same problem. Its open source, bugs are probably there so tell me if you find some.

Thanks to ASF, HourBoostr, SteamIdleMaster and SAM for the idea.

https://github.com/Miabeyefendi/SteamEdge

And I need feedbacks, bug-reports, issues. I would like to see how I can improve more and more. So, go for it.

Promotional Vladimir — An Open-Source Project I'm Building

Hey r/opensource!

I've been building Vladmir, an open-source personal AI assistant that I'm trying to make more than just another chat interface around an LLM.

The idea is to bring together local AI, voice interaction, persistent memory, vision, and practical tools in one system, with a desktop application and companion apps for Android and Wear OS.

Rather than relying on a hosted AI service for everything, Vladmir uses Ollama for local inference by default, so you can run compatible models on your own hardware. The trade-off is that performance depends heavily on your hardware and the model you choose.

What it can do

  • Local AI chat: A Linux desktop interface with different profiles for general assistance, programming, and teaching.
  • Voice interaction: Speech recognition through Whisper and speech synthesis through Piper, with a turn-based voice conversation flow.
  • Vision: Capture images from a camera or supported video stream and send them to a compatible vision model for analysis.
  • Persistent memory and knowledge library: Store information locally and import documents and source code for later reference.
  • Developer tools: Read and explicitly edit GitHub content, work with configured programming tools, and experiment with IDE integration through MCP.
  • Everyday utilities: Local reminders and agenda management, web search, email draft preparation, and limited software installation workflows with confirmation.
  • Android and Wear OS: Native companion projects intended to extend the assistant across devices, including chat, voice, camera, augmented reality, and selected notification integration.

Privacy and control

Local-first doesn't automatically mean that everything is private, so I'm trying to be explicit about the boundaries.

The default inference endpoint is local, configuration and application data are stored in user-owned directories, and remote access is not preconfigured. Web search, GitHub, and other external integrations can still involve third-party services when enabled.

Actions that can modify code or the system are designed around explicit approval rather than unrestricted access.

Current state

Vladmir is actively being developed. The Linux desktop and its core integrations have a substantial amount of implementation, while Android, Wear OS, Bluetooth connectivity, and some experimental features still need device-level validation and reliability work.

I'm not presenting every feature as production-ready, and I'd rather document limitations than promise capabilities that haven't been properly tested.

The project is released under the MIT license.

Repository: https://github.com/thu12dta3/Vladmir

I'd genuinely appreciate technical feedback, especially on the architecture, local model integration, security boundaries, and cross-device communication.

If you were building or choosing a self-hosted personal AI assistant, what would you change about this approach? What would you want to see improved before using something like Vladmir daily?

I'm interested in honest criticism as much as contributions.

Promotional I built Better Windows Services with mass actions, force stop/restart, query language, more information GUI/CLI

Thumbnail
github.com
2 Upvotes

Hello, I had built Better Windows Services an alternative to windows services with dark theme, query language, mass actions, force stop/restart, export of services and tons of extra data. If you like the project, please give it a star

You can read here about about query language

Yes the strange text on the GIF is from Polish Windows :-), right now I'm working on snapshots from the GUI, msi installer and tons of other things. Rust + WPF.

Some features:

  • Ask, instead of scroll - start:auto !status:running is what should be up and is not. One language, in the search box and in bws list --query, with the fields offered as you type.
  • Show the plan before anything happens - every stop, start, restart and start type change is previewed with the services it takes down with it, and the preview is what runs.
  • Tell you what drifted - bws snapshot create freezes the machine into a file, and bws snapshot diff says what changed since, configuration apart from what merely started or stopped.
  • Stop a service that will not stop - it asks politely first and ends the process only if that fails, naming every other service that lives in it.
  • Show what services.msc hides - who signed the binary and whether Windows trusts it, triggers, privileges, the security descriptor, the process and its memory. As columns, and as things to search on.
  • Say when it could not read something - a field it could not read is reported as not read, never shown as empty. A snapshot taken without administrator rights says so inside the file.
  • Fit into scripts - --json on every command, an exit code for every ending, and 5 when a diff finds drift.
  • Run from one file, offline - no installer, no .NET to install, and it never talks to the internet. Reading needs no administrator rights. GPL-3.0.

Promotional Why an OS window and a unique Dock or taskbar icon for each agent? — Rethink the terminal (1)

Thumbnail
github.com
0 Upvotes

I use AI CLIs for coding, planning and writing and that has changed what I want from a terminal. In AgentTerm, I can do things like manage agent sessions, comment directly on what they print, and collaborate with agents directly on rendered pages for plans, drafts and code, revising them in place. This piece is part of a series I am writing about the design decisions behind those tools, based on more than eight months of daily use.

In this first piece, I explain why I give each agent its own window and Dock tile or taskbar button: using the OS to switch between agents, giving each a recognizable identity, and finding and resuming earlier sessions for follow-up work.

AgentTerm is the open-source terminal I'm building for AI CLIs.

I'd welcome feedback or new ideas. If you try it with your own sessions, I'd like to hear what works for you and what you'd change.

How often do you return to an earlier agent session for follow-up work? When several agents are running at once, what helps you tell them apart?

Promotional Bounded-Origin: an open source gateway to control how much expensive computation HTTP traffic can cause at an origin

It’s available as an HTTP gateway and Java library for controlling expensive server side work. Equivalent requests can share a computation, new work runs within explicit limits, and saved results can be reused across restarts.

I’ve been using it internally for a website struggling with bot traffic. It worked for that specific use case and I also tested it against a separate cgit application and the results were reasonable. But there’s a trade off as it shows higher latency overhead.

The benefits depend heavily on the workload, so keep that in mind if you want to experiment with it. I wouldn’t recommend it for production use. Some of its core capabilities are useful, though, and I’d encourage anyone interested to pilot it in staging and measure the results before considering anything further.

And yeah just to clarify the gateway isn’t a replacement for authentication, tls termination, rate limits and waf controls. It does not identify bots or stop incoming traffic, it helps controlling expensive computation load.

Discussion Could ArtCraft apps just be decomps and translations?

Brandon Thomas has made some questionable statements regarding his applications. For example, saying that the apps will reach 100% parity in a month and later stepping that back. Also claiming that AI will replace Google Search. For someone that can supposedly build applications this quickly, it is odd that he would make such inaccurate and naive statements.

Also, the speed with which he has churned out these applications has been suspicious. I know AI can speed up development, but it's not like AI has advanced THAT much in the last 3 months. Why are we not seeing other developers churning out Adobe clones likes this (at the same speed and perceived quality, even as broken as they are)?

Furthermore, it is suspicious that they released so many apps at once. Apart from creating a massive backlog of bugs, it also created a negative perception of the suite on social media that the apps are buggy and unreliable (for the influencers that seriously tested them). Why would ArtCraft not build one app, get it working, and then start working on others? If the answer is because the hard part is fixing the apps after decomp and translation, then that makes sense.

Finally, the timing with REA and other decomp events taking place is suspicious. Is it just coincidence that around the time these events occur that independently someone just got good at creating production-ish clones of commercial apps?

Is there anyway to know for sure that these ArtCraft applications were actually created in a "clean room" manner and not just decomped/translated by AI? Listen, if AI is good enough to build a Photoshop clone by itself, I'm all for it. But if all Brandon did was hit the "decomp/translate" button on an app and dump the resulting code onto to the open source community to fix, it's not really something to praise, especially if the project will be taken down in a few months because of copyright infringement claims. Due to the amount and type of companies that own these apps, Brandon does not exactly seem like someone that is thinking about IP infringement lawsuits (patents, copyright, or otherwise), so I would not put it past him to try and push the theory that a "clean room" implementation could include decompiling and translating the original binary.

Discussion Looking for an open source video editor with a simple glass breaking transition.

I'm trying to get into indie animation and trying to look for an open source video editor that has a simple glass breaking transition or effect. I want to use it for a joke as a character on screen breaks into glass but for the life of me I keep getting told to use Adobe After Effects but i don't have Adobe money and the one of my goals is to make a full animation only using open source software.

i've tried looking it up on my own but no luck. if someone could point me in the right direction that would be helpful.

Promotional New Bluetooth dongle drivers: TP-Link UB500, CSR8510, and Magic Hotspot

Hi, everyone,

as you know, I have been releasing Linux drivers for a while.

When using USB dongles, it has come to attention the CSR8510 (a specific CSR Bluetooth dongle clone). was being detected as a generic CSR clone, so it would not work at all under Linux.

The TP-Link UB500, on the other hand, apparently IS supported by the kernel, but only a few revisions. And mine wasn't.

So, we had one device that would never work under Linux, and another that maybe could, but was a pain to configure.

But not anymore!

I'm presenting you new Bluetooth dongle drivers compatible with Ubuntu, Debian and Mint!
While you can download and build from the source, I'm also making binaries pre-available for them.

And because I couldn't find a hotspot program that is easy to use, I'm also releasing Magic Hotspot, which integrates well with these drivers. Devices are scanned automatically, and you can connect through USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

If you guys are interested, the releases are available here.

Limitations: I have a CSR8510 clone, so while the device poses as the real thing, not all functionalities are implemented in the actual hardware. This means audio connections are dropped after 30 seconds. Sadly, this is a hardware issue. The TP Link UB 500 works as it should.

Disclaimer: This project is developed for personal interest, with no intent of being useful to anyone. If it is interesting or useful to you, that's good, but not a goal.
