buy/sell/trade Norfolk Buy / Sell / Trade Monthly Thread: October, 2026

Use this thread when you are selling, trading, giving away, or looking for any items and/or services. Please be descriptive, post any relevant photos of the item you're selling or looking for, and list the price or budget.

Pro-tip: there are many "buy nothing" and neighborhood-specific groups on Facebook and Nextdoor that can be used to give away or find free items near you. You may find more luck on those social networks than here on Reddit and are more likely to deal with actual local users.

BE AUTHENTIC AND SAFE: Falsely leading on another Redditor is grounds for being permanently banned from this subreddit. Please remember not to post personal information about yourself or others and exercise caution when privately messaging with anyone you do not personally know or trust. Consider a neutral, public location if you plan on meeting to exchange an item in person.

HIGH RISK OF EVENT TICKET SCAMS: Users seeking to sell or purchase tickets of local events are seeing a significantly-increased risk of being scammed. If you receive a private message from a user who hasn't interacted in this subreddit before, you are very likely speaking with a scammer.

NO PROHIBITED TRANSACTIONS: The posting of prohibited goods or services is strictly against Reddit's TOS and are subject to removal by our moderators and/or Reddit's admins. Please report any comments that appear to violate this policy for further review.

WTF In case you didn’t know

When transiting Midtown Shopping Center (the plaza across from Harris Teeter and close to the train crossing), the parking spots are angled BECAUSE the roads are one-way.

I’ve seen people going against traffic and upset that I’m right in the middle.

Sparrow & Providence Roads Need Turn Signals—Help Us Push for Safety

If you've ever turned left at Sparrow Road and Providence Road in Chesapeake, you know the feeling: that moment of hesitation, waiting through multiple light cycles, praying you time it right.

I started a petition asking the city to install turn signals at this intersection. It's not just about convenience—it's about safety. Studies show that traffic signals can reduce intersection accidents by 30% and cut down on congestion. For kids walking to school, cyclists, and everyday commuters like us, this one change could make a real difference.

The city already budgets for road improvements. This is a smart, efficient use of those resources—protecting people who live, work, and drive through here every day. If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing. And if you have your own story about this intersection—a close call, long wait, or just pure frustration—drop it in the comments. The more of us who speak up, the clearer the message to city officials. Thanks.

Spot to go before Masquerade tonight?

So I’m looking for spots to go before the Masquerade on Colley starts. Heard that Little Dog Diner is open and has a decent happy hour (4-6 50% off their adult drinks) Are there any other spots that I should know about?

Early Voting is Easy!

Thumbnail norfolk.gov
• Upvotes

Not everyone may realize how easy it is to vote early. I didn't know until two years ago.

City Hall is open 7 days a week, and satellite locations are open Tuesday and Thursday, plus this Saturday and Sunday and next Saturday (the last day of early voting).

I voted early at the Lambert's Point location two years ago. Parking was easy, and there was no wait.

If you're planning to vote or on the fence, early voting is a convenient option.

❓questions❓ Rocky Horror Shadowcast - worth it?

It's been well over 5 years since I went to the RHPS Shadowcast at the Naro, and maybe it was just the particular last time I went, but the participation was pretty poor, with notably one guy (who I think was part of the crew running the show) walking up and down the back half of the aisles shouting the callouts in a rather lackluster way that kinda ruined the vibe for me. But I've also been several other times and had a blast!

I'd love to go again this month and bring a friend or three since it's Halloween month and our beloved Tim Curry passed this year, but I don't know what the scene is like anymore. I see the Naro has it twice this month as per usual but Fishnet Inc is also performing at Makers Brewery. Are they not the ones at the Naro anymore or is this like a third show for them this month?

I was trying to do a lil research on the current iteration of the shadowcast and maybe find some reviews to give me a better impression, but I have failed to find anything notable, so I'm turning to y'all. Is it worth going still? Anything I should be aware of with the current troupe(s)?

TIA!

Stamp Collecting Resources?

My Grandpa passed away earlier this year and I was recently sent his stamp collection, which he showed me a few times when I was a kid. I’m trying to learn more about what’s in the collection and just learning about the hobby in general.

I’m not looking to sell but if there’s somewhere local I can bring it just to look through and tips on preserving the stamps in there, I’d gladly make a trip.

things to do Norfolk Admirals Ticket for Free

I have a single ticket to the Norfolk Admirals home opener this coming Friday but I can't make it due to work commitments.

The first person to send me their name and email on a private message can get it for free. It's in section 201 so right above center ice.

Edit: this is now gone! Took less than 30 secs!

Generic Theater moves into a new home with volunteer help and finds new fans

Post image
41 Upvotes

The 45-year-old Generic Theater is transforming a 3,600-square-foot space inside the Masonic Temple in Norfolk into a new black box theater following an extensive search for a permanent home.

After spending 18 years operating in the basement of Chrysler Hall, the independent playhouse secured a lease in May and is preparing to open its upcoming season in November.

Despite changing locations, theater officials say they remain committed to the core mission of producing edgy, non-mainstream performances for the local community.

Do you use the left lane to pass?

I recently had to take a family member to the hospital and I found myself being delayed by the amount of people who would not let me pass them in the left lane. Given, I’m a safe driver and say I was going about 59 in a 55? I understand it’s frustrating when people cut you off but why make things difficult if you don’t know what’s going on in the car behind you. And to my understanding I thought the left lane was only for passing. The title is an unbiased question because I usually don’t care what other drivers are doing.

Any information on Mamie Johnson for Ward 3?

I'm not originally from here and I don't know much about her. She's briefly mentioned taking on greenspace and park projects on an article from WHRO and some wishy washy comments about Flock

Just curious what her track record has been since she has been on city council for over ten years

Monster Jam with 2year old

Has anyone had experience bringing a two year old to Monster Jam without a ticket. Our girl just turned two this month and Monster Jam comes next month on the 6th. I don't really want to pay for 3 $50 tickets when she is only a month off the listed free child age. Has anyone had experience in the past sneaking older kids in and how did it go?

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 30

Good evening,

This past Sunday morning, 18 OCT 2026, a call summoned police to the 200 block of E. 30th St. Police arrived just after 8 AM. There, they found Daquan Pope, 23 years old, suffering from wound(s) from gunfire. EMS / police pronounced him dead on the scene. A suspect has been charged and is currently being sought by law enforcement.

The red square for this incident is in the western third of the map, just above the two purple dots.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/police-investigate-fatal-shooting-on-west-30th-st/

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/10/20/24-year-old-norfolk-man-charged-in-fatal-west-30th-street-shooting/

A few observations:

- This was the third murder in Norfolk in October of 2026 and the 30th overall for the city in 2026.

- The average age of the three men killed this month has been 21.33 years old. The average age for the year has been exactly 32 years old.

- Mr. Pope's death puts the ratio of men to women killed at 25 men and 5 women for the year, at least as identified by the City and local news media. The ratio of 83% is now into having men overrepresented compared to historical trends, which is usually at 75-80%, but with such a "small" number of women a single murder there would kick things back into the "usual" proportion.

- To look at the trends of the last few years, we have about 10 weeks left in 2026. We are three murders past where we were in 2025 at the end of the year, which is not good; but we are "only" one more than the number at the end of October in 2024. Certainly it depends on how things go in November and December, but we are about even with the numbers of two years ago. In 2023 we were 34 at the end of October, four more than our current total.

- I work on this project not to spread dark misery, but so that we have hard data to look at regarding our most serious crime.

Be safe, make good decisions!

Norfolk considering rolling back building standards meant to boost climate resilience

Post image
53 Upvotes

Norfolk city officials are thinking about scaling back the city's 2018 Resilience Quotient zoning ordinance, citing concerns that the current mandatory regulations serve as a barrier to housing and commercial development.

The proposed revisions would convert the resilience point system from a requirement into an optional incentive program for large developments.

Environmental advocates warned against weakening flood protections, arguing that the city should refine rather than dismantle its innovative climate adaptation framework.

❓questions❓ Hit and Run

I'm not entirely sure this fits here, but my friend was recently involved in a hit and run Sunday 10/18/2026 6:35am at McDonald's ODU hampton blvd . 2013-2016 white Hyundai Santa Fe (could also be the sport model). Should have damage on the drivers side, darker grey paint. He had lights on his back plate so the picture didn't get any numbers.
