Now with Steam's Next Fest getting kickback for the amount of AI generated content, can we talk about the worst part of the Switch Store?

For context

I love my switch to bits, if you were to tally the amount of hour I've played mine it would look insane. I'm saying this to preface that I'm saying the following with love, I've noticed a huge change since I bought my first switch to now in the Nintendo Store.

The sheer amount of AI slop and shovelware is actually exhausting to filter through. I know there are ways around it like sorting by most purchased or looking at the charts, but the fact it's on there at all is an issue. I'm not embarrassed to say I've accidentally bought games which I thought were the original version only to find out it's a janky unplayable asset flip cash grab. Or even bought a game that was an original, only to find it buggy or full of AI assets that weren't advertised in the store page. It's also insane to go into the new releases tab and have to filter through AI generated foot fetish games and other content you just wouldn't think would have made it to the switch store before I can actually see a genuine made by people game that's designed to be played.

It would be less of a problem if the game return system was easier to access and advertised in the actual store. I didn't even know you could return games until recently. I just used to accept buying games on the switch store was a high risk investment because even if you do all the research you can, you can still accidentally pick up a game that doesn't run at all.

I personally haven't seen many people talk about this, and I don't know if we've just accepted that game stores don't have quality control. But since people are now focusing on Steam and campaigning for an AI filter, I don't think it's unfair to say this is an issue Nintendo has had for at least a few years now and really should be addressing.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Terranigma; Pokémon Trozei!; Super Princess Peach

On this day (October 20) in Nintendo history...

  • Terranigma  was released in 1995 for the Super Famicom in Japan. In this action role-playing game, developed by Quintet, we meet Ark, a mischievous boy who lives in Crysta, the only village in the under world. After opening a forbidden door and touching a mysterious box containing a friendly demon named Yomi, every citizen in the village is frozen. The only person not affected by the curse, the Elder, guides him to resurrect the continents of the surface world in order to unfreeze the people.
  • Pokémon Trozei!  (known in Europe as Pokémon Link! ) was released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Genius Sonority, join Lucy Fleetfoot, a Secret Agent for the Secret Operations League (SOL). Your mission is to rescue a batch of missing Pokémon, stolen by a band of wicked henchmen: the Phobos Batallion! Slide Pokéballs up, down, left or right to assemble four matching Balls into a vertical or horizontal row, creating a Pokémon Link.
  • Super Princess Peach  was released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this platforming game, developed by Tose, Princess Peach takes centre-stage! Bowser has finally done the smart thing and kidnapped Mario, whisking him (and Luigi, too) away to his castle hideout on Vibe Island. But Bowser hadn't reckoned on Peach taking it so personally.... Armed with her trusty parasol, Parry, Peach can whack Bowser's bad guys if they get too close for comfort, though she also has more womanly wiles to save the day.

What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

A Delivery Company That Struggles to Deliver

Unfortunately, most of us probably will never get to choose whether DirectDeliver.com handles our packages. In my case, Nintendo has decided to use DirectDeliver.com for order deliveries, which is how I ended up dealing with them.

One of my longstanding frustrations with Nintendo is that even when you pay for shipping, Nintendo frequently restricts your ability to redirect a package to a safer delivery location.

Because of situations like this, I have a USPS PO Box at an actual United States Postal Service facility that also has parcel lockers and accepts eligible package deliveries. You would think that would solve the problem.

Apparently not.

DirectDeliver.com cannot deliver to a post office location, even though this is an official USPS facility designed to receive mail and packages.

Now I am stuck dealing with Nintendo because the carrier Nintendo selected cannot deliver my order to the secure USPS location I provided. At the same time, Nintendo restricts customers from simply redirecting packages to another safe location.

That creates a ridiculous situation where the customer has almost no control over the shipment, while the delivery company Nintendo selected cannot complete what should be a fairly ordinary delivery.

Looking at other reviews of DirectDeliver.com, I also don’t seem to be the only person having problems with the actual delivery part of their service.

If Nintendo intends to continue using DirectDeliver.com, either DirectDeliver needs to improve its delivery options or Nintendo needs to give customers more control over where their packages can be delivered.

At the very least, there should be a workable alternative when DirectDeliver cannot service the address provided.
A delivery company ultimately has one primary job: successfully delivering the package.

That should not be this complicated.

Nintendos UI has slowly gained more soul

In the Wii U/3ds era, I assume nintendo let the developers do whatever they wanted with UI.

Then the nintendo switch happened, and all the Ui became bland. Thats probably where the basic "mario party font" that they kept using came from, you know, the white text with a 3 pxl wide border.

Well at the end of the generation, developers started bending the rules just a little with the paper mario remake, and now on switch 2 the barriers seem to be gone again.

Programmer Mochi64 computated 1.2 million words with an analysis software to decode the Mario64 Plaque. The process considered combination of words, font, and resizing technique to fit the 3-5 pixels tall letters on the 32x32 plaque tile. It reads "Eternal Star," and, "We Hope So."

Open-source Code: https://github.com/supermochi64/sm64-plaque-decode/tree/main

According the toe score system, this answer received a score of 1,129 (low deviation), while "L is Real 2401" received 2,031 (higher deviation than the software's answer). You can try your answer and your analysis by using the software because it is open source. Mochi64 has posted a ‘plaque challenge’, where people can use the same open-source code to test another phrase and see if they can get an even lower score, but after their fairly exhaustive process they’re sure this is the definitive answer.

L is Real: Ironically, Shigeru Miyamato has confirmed on 3 separate occasions in 1995, 1996, and 2009 that Luigi was intended to be in the game for a multiplayer minigame. Due to memory issues, controller set ups, or the minigame being a poor fit or off brand, Luigi was removed in the final year of development before the game's release. Luigi has only ever been seen in earlier versions of Mario 64 in documentation of Space World 1995 and a 2020 game file leak.
