WWYD? Vent/Rant My neighbor reported my shed to the city as unpermitted, and the inspector wrote up his deck instead

2.2k Upvotes

At the start of the month we had a little 8x10 shed put in the back corner of our yard for the mower and all the yard stuff that’s been living in our garage since we moved in. The day it was delivered, my neighbor leaned over the fence and told me I’d “need a permit for that.” I looked it up that night and our city doesn’t require one for anything under 120 square feet, which ours is by a lot.

On Tuesday we got a letter from code enforcement saying they’d received a complaint about an unpermitted structure and an inspector would be coming out Thursday. He’s literally the only neighbor who can see our backyard, and he’d already told me about the permit, so I knew it was him.

The inspector came out Thursday morning and measured the shed. He said it’s fine and I don’t need anything. Then he looked over the fence at my neighbor’s deck. It’s a big second story deck off the back of his house that he built himself last summer, and it’s easily 8 feet off the ground. The inspector asked if I knew when it went up, and I said last summer since that’s the truth. He took a couple pictures from my yard and went next door.

Yesterday my neighbor got a notice that he’s got to get a permit and an inspection on the deck or take it down.

Last night he came over and said I “sent the inspector” at him, even though he called the city on me FIRST. Then he handed me a letter he’d typed up for me to sign that says his deck has never bothered me and I have no objection to it, so he can send it to the city.

I haven’t signed it. Do I have to do anything here, or can I just ignore it?

Vent/Rant City dwellers moving to the country

Our small neighborhood is semi rural unincorporated county. Most plots are 3-5 acres so we have septic systems, wells and a lot of long term residents that came from farm or ranch life. No HOA and we don’t want one.

We also have city dwellers that move in to escape the rat race but suddenly want city rules. Dude, we can burn brush, shoot guns and fireworks, and have livestock. Some of the houses are pristine, some need to be bulldozed. That’s the chance you take in the countryside.

Many residents have lots of dogs, me included, that bark and bay. If you think the county sheriff is going to waste his time on a barking dog complaint, you’re delusional.

There’s no restrictions on using tractors, chainsaws, lawn mowers, leaf blowers or construction. Hey, why not just adapt to the environment you chose to live in?

Vent/Rant Our USPS is the WORST neighbor

The post office is our neighbor. In April, our neighbor obtained a massive, semi trailer size EV charger that makes a terrible, loud noise. I reached out to the local branch and they apologized but there was nothing they could do about the "excessive noise" as they transitioned to EVs.

With the A/C on all summer, the noise was almost tolerable. They have since seemingly got more EV mail trucks and cranked up the noise. This shit runs for hours at a time, day and night, the noise is just there. Can't enjoy sitting outside. Keeps us up at night. It's almost midnight and it's currently droning on, over the tv.

I've escalated within USPS, filed a FixIt complaint via the County, and filed a code violation/requested a noise assessment. I've begun to rally neighbors. Come November 1, I'm escalating to congress/news.

Evidence of the hell they're putting us through:

https://youtube.com/shorts/YHps4S3Alns?si=qE0dLPEyolVL40SL

In addition, they use a loud intercom system on their freight docks starting ~6am, including saturdays. There are constsntly random labels, packaging materials, junk mail, etc blowing out of their facility.

The noise, though? FML.

Edit: My uncalibrated phone is estimating the noise at 75dB at the property line and at 390hz.

Clark County's residential noise limits are 50 dB during the day and 40 dB at night for the frequency range of this noise. I'm hoping Code Enforcement will come out and take an official measurement.

Idk why I'm getting downvoted for living near a post office. It was a good/neutral thing when deciding on location compared to other options. The post office added some occasional noise, but also added privacy for many homes vs that lot having two story homes/condos built up there. We've lived here for many years with no complaints until now.

Edit 2: I'll post a pedestrian view video of the noise later tonight, if/when it comes back on. The charging station ran from 4:45pm-1:06am last night and has been off since. Here's an unedited video from inside my house: https://youtube.com/shorts/y7fhUnkTm08?si=_ptvcEUG7qf5AMO1

WWYD? Vent/Rant My neighbor held her girlfriend at gun point in front of my door.

• Upvotes

So I stay in an apartment, and these are my neighbors directly across from me. The hallway is very narrow. You can easily touch both our doors at the same time.

So my neighbors are a lesbian couple who fight all the time. They for whatever reason come out their home to fight in the hallway. I’ve had to call the cops before bc them and 3 other girls were jumping a drunk girl in the hallway. The girl couldn’t even walk and they started all beating her ass. You can always hear them arguing in their apartment. I never complained to management.

The other day, I just got home from dropping off my toddler to daycare and I hear them arguing in the hallway. I walk into my home and not even 2 minutes later they start fighting, in the hallway still. Not even 2 more minutes pass and I hear “I got one in the chamber for you”. I peek out my peep hole and she has both hands on the gun, arms extended, pointing it at her girlfriend. This is right outside my door btw. If I came home 5 minutes later I would have walked right into that.

I called the police. They fought in the hallway for maybe 15-20 minutes. I never saw the police come.

I called management and reported them. They asked if I had ring footage but I don’t have a ring camera. My neighbors have one though, I know their camera caught everything but I doubt they’d share their footage. They said they’d give me an update. Waiting to hear back.

I called the non emergency police line for an update. Apparently the notes said the office spoke with me that day and I told him there was no issue and I never saw a gun. I told the operator I never spoke with an officer and that wasn’t me. She said the officer would be calling me soon. Still waiting on that call.

I get some people may not think it’s a big deal. But I have a toddler and I’m pregnant. I don’t feel safe. My boyfriend wants to speak to the neighbors but I don’t see them being reasonable and it only making it worse. I’ve minded my business whenever they fight. But pulling a gun outside my door? What can I do about this? I feel like no one is taking this seriously. My toddler has witnessed them arguing in the hallway. My lease ends in April and I’m definitely leaving, I’m trying to leave sooner. But I love my apartment, it’s so beautiful and I do love my neighborhood. I just really don’t like my neighbors.

Homeowner NFH Our Neighbor 's Feud with the Landlord Baffled Everybody

I'm a 65 year old male. I serve on our small town's Board of Zoning Appeals and these posts hold an interest to me. Also, after reading the posts and being happy that my urban (DC) and now that I'm back home in West Virginia, rural neighbors have been so friendly and nice, I wanted to share something that happened in the early 80s in the state capitol, Charleston.

I had a summer job at the Capitol and was staying within walking distance at my sister and her husband's apartment. It was one of three in a residential home that had been converted on a very wide and long leafy street. We shared the laundry set up in the basement. The homes were single family detached on narrow lots.

The landlords were a couple in their thirties getting into real estate investment. They did what work they could themselves and were very friendly and responsive.

A neighbor on one side was about my parents' age (born in the teens or early twenties). He was slim, bespectacled, seemed low key and would smile and chat with me when I was outside or going back and forth as I did not have a car. He was always outside working on his yard and house.

However - when the landlord came by he really did become a Mr. Hyde of a neighbor. He would pace up and down on the property line if the landlord was walking around his side or in the back yard, cussing him out. The first time we saw it we asked the landlord what was going on and he said he didn't know what had caused it but the neighbor was always upset when he or his wife came to the property.

One weekend, I was the only tenant in the house. The landlord came by to work on the gutters. As he set the ladder up on the side adjacent to the neighbor, the pacing, cussing, etc. started up again.

And then he dropped dead.

Right on his side of the property line, he collapsed. I didn't see it but his wife called for an ambulance.

The landlord was a really nice guy and sincerely sorry that the neighbor had gotten so upset that he had some sort of attack or seizure. Even later he seemed to have some PTSD from the incident.

I'm a boomer - but this was one of those lessons from my early twenties - all the anger and vitriol when you're upset and sure you're right can backfire and then - does it matter?

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbor has had aggressive confrontations with me twice and now I’m afraid to go outside.

I’m still freaking out about this and I’m not really sure what to do. I’m afraid this guy seriously wants to hurt me.

My first interaction with him occurred back in March. I was waking my dog, who I was leash training, and so I stopped periodically to reinforce behavior and keep the leash untaught. I happened to stop on the sidewalk in front of his house when he came out of his garage towards me. I’ve tried to block it out but to my recollection it went like this:

“Are you letting your dog pee?” Immediately I could tell he was upset and I tried explaining that I was training my dog for walking but he interrupted me. He began yelling at me to keep walking and get off his property. I asked why he was upset but he kept yelling about how I was on his property. I was respectful but stood my ground, since I’m perfectly allowed to walk on the sidewalk. He argued against that and eventually landed on “All you white people act like you own the damn world but this is my goddamn property”. He also said he knew people in the city and said he could have my dog put down (this was his first threat). That shook me up so I decided to walk away and I avoided his house for months.

Not much of anything happened after that. He very obviously glared at me whenever I walked by his house or he drove by me. Until today.

Important to know, I’m a lover of creatures both large and small. So today walking my dog I saw someone getting ready to run over a non-venomous snake in the road, I intervened. The driver conceded and I quickly went home and left my dog to go try and help the snake off the road so it wouldn’t get hurt. As I was approaching it, a lawn care person pulled up along side me, and started talking to me about snakes (I guess he sees a lot in his line of work). I was watching the lawn care person drive away when all of a sudden I hear a screech of brakes and the honk of a horn. Mere feet away from me is the belligerent neighbor, having nearly run me over, climbing out of his car. “I’ve about had it with you! First you’re letting your dog pee on my lawn and now you’re standing in the god damn road!” I was pretty shocked after having almost been run over, but also confused since there was plenty of room to go around me. I started to explain about the snake and how I was taking to the lawn tech and he interrupted me screaming at the top of his lungs. “I don’t give a damn about no fucking snake, you better keep your ass out the goddamn road and stop playing with me.” At this point remembering how this went last time I was fumbling for my phone to take a video (which failed since I was shaking so much) and told him that if he was gonna act like this I was going to call the police. That really set him off. He told me to go ahead and call them because they’re all his friends (not sure what he meant by this), but he proceeded to get back in his car to drive away. At this point a friendly neighbor waved me over to help after seeing the whole thing. Then, the belligerent one turned back around, and shouted something out his window about going home to “get something” or “show me something”. At this point I should have ran home but I have some stupid courageous bone in my body that believes I should stand up for what’s right. He did pull into his driveway but just turned back around again. This third time driving by me, I waved at him. Partly to just try and be a friendly neighbor and partly because I was being a smartass.

He again slammed on his brakes and got out of the car, said some more insults about how he was “a man” and to “not be waving at him with that pussy shit”. I didn’t respond before he drove back off, the friendly neighbor and I just sorta laughed at the ridiculousness of it. When he was driving back by for the fourth time, the friendly neighbor’s wife pulled us both inside. Thank fuck for them. I was too high on adrenaline and fear to realize how much danger i was actually in.

After cooling down and collecting myself I worked up the courage to call the non-emergency line. They weren’t very helpful, and said basically the only thing I could do would be to file for a restraining order. This would cause money and time in court, and does not prevent me from getting shot.

My plan in the future is to stop walking my dog and avoid him as much as possible. I’m going to try and file a miscellaneous report so this activity is on the police record, but I’m not sure I can leave my house again without having a panic attack. Worst of all, I hate that that means he’s won, and has intimidated and threatened me into getting out of his sight. I love walking around the neighborhood and I wanna feel safe around my home. I could probably use some advice.

WWYD? Vent/Rant New neighbor

I have a new neighbor at the bottom apartment(I’m at the top).
It’s only been a week since she’s moved in, and there’s already been so much disruption since she’s moved in.
It seems she was drinking and having a loud conversation right outside my window with friends at midnight on a week day. They were screaming/laughing.
Another incident was at 3 am, I’m not sure what she was doing but the whole unit vibrated and you could hear and feel these big thuds like something heavy was being thrown around. And then her door slams and she screams “you motherf.” Again, it’s 3 am…

I really don’t want to expect this kind of experience every night. But it’s also only been a week. Do I hope this is just a bad week for her, or say something to management? I work a lot, and I just want to get enough sleep so I can do my job well.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Is excessive lawn mowing some sort of sickness

Its mid October, it's 50 degrees out, pouring rain, and my neighbor is out mowing his lawn. I've been back from vacation for 17 days and have only had to mow my lawn ONCE because its just not growing much anymore in this weather. He has mowed a minimum of ten times.

People may say it's boredom, but I've never been so bored as to mow the lawn in a downpour. Every single time I want to open the windows and air the house out, this asshole cranks it up. The last time I started a bonfire with some music going, he starts it up. Anytime I try to enjoy my backyard or have a get together, he forces us back in the house with the noise. Then he had the audacity to make a sparky comment about how we must be night owls because we were outside at 8pm playing music at a very reasonable level. Then when I put a motion light in the middle of my yard so my dogs can see, he had to pull me aside to ask what it is. Its a fking light, moron! I dont pull him aside and ask him why the hell he mows 24/7.

And once his grass has officially died, he's busting out the snowblower as soon as .5 inches falls. I moved to the suburbs to escape the noise, but im not sure what's worse. I lived outside a major airport and it's nearly on the same level. Its driving me mad. I just dont understand the desire to disrupt your neighbors every other day because youre bored. I have a loud pressure washer I rarely use because it's loud asf and I don't want to annoy anyone.

Homeowner NFH How to get over ptsd from previous neighbour from hell experience and start trusting neighbours again after our move?

We escaped a pretty horrific neighbour from hell situation. Multiple cops called, going through courts to get peace bond (restraining order in Canada), threats, video footage, awfulness and anxiety. We were in a townhouse and shared a wall. The neighbour was a horrendous, obviously mentally unwell woman and her husband, who became obsessed with my family and made it her life mission to make our living hell. (She had no job, so tormenting my family was the only thing that she occupied herself with) . We lived in a horror movie at that point.

We’ve heard her abuse her husband through the wall. She would put speakers to the wall and leave that for hours, yell horrific things at us when we were outside, chase us with camera. I can’t even type anymore to describe the situation as it was so awful.

We moved since then and bought a detached house. We share a driveway with new neighbour and she seems nice. It’s been three years. The new neighbour, kind of became a friend, sometimes will be blunt asking us something about this or that thing that we’re doing with our house, and I immediately go on high alert and feel worried to my stomach that it may turn into our old situation. Obviously it won’t.

And she asked us something the other day about our contractors working on our deck and I immediately felt anger thinking “never ever inquire about our property or personal business” obviously didn’t say that out loud. I immediately feel anxiety that “what if this happens again?”. Any time there is a different tone or something that she’s asking about maybe shouldn’t be any of her business but she’s just being neighbourly, I get ache in my stomach.

I never ever want to know any neighbour ever again. Don’t want to know their name, don’t want to borrow sugar, don’t want to help with mailboxes etc. I don’t want them to know we exist.

This is unhealthy. People who have survived (true) neighbours from hell, how did you finally get over it and how did you move from your ptsd and started trusting people again?

WWYD? Vent/Rant Next door neighbors illegal Airbnb

I live in the last townhouse in a row of them, our HOA has a first come first serve policy but there’s enough parking that everyone should be able to park up to two cars in front of their house. However, my neighbor next door rents his as an illegal lodging situation that he ONLY rents to creepy construction workers, sometimes up to 3-4 giant ford trucks or work vehicles, and for some reason, they all insist on parking right front of my door. There is always 3 empty parking spots in front of their own house. I’m a single woman living alone and have previously had issues with these guests littering, loitering, and shoveling snow so that my guests are stuck when they park in front of MY home. I complained to HOA that I do not feel comfortable opening the window in my own house because these men behave like creeps. On my first encounter with one of them they mentioned that the camera I have on my front door can actually be evaded with thermal jackets or some shit, and it was definitely not said as a heads up to be safe. They circle my house, and it is only when I have my window open. Conveniently the only time they “play basketball” is also when I have my window open. By play basketball I mean walk back and forth in front of my house, occasionally dribbling on the sidewalk while they look at me through my window.

For the parking, even after I asked the guests to please park in front of their own house since it’s rude and I don’t feel comfortable, they continue to do so. The first time I left a note asking them to please stop, they left rotting meat in front of my backyard gate. Because it’s an unregistered lodging situation, there is no one to hold accountable and the owner is never here. When I first moved in, his broken pipes caused a flood in my basement and it took my dad (since he wouldn’t listen to me) threatening to call county zoning for him to finally get it fixed. I’ve already reached out to report them to zoning because it’s been a year of dealing with his shitty guests and their entitled behavior since moving here and it’s getting to a point. I can’t park in front of my own front door because his guests and their giant trucks are in front of my house while his parking is completely empty. I don’t even get the logic in doing this. I know it’s not illegal but it’s a jackass thing to do. The only solution HOA tried to suggest was punishing the entire neighborhood with permit parking because of one asshole neighbor and his illegal rental. Every few months a new one shows up and this shitshow starts again. I feel like I sound insane but it all feels so fucking invasive.

Other Not from hell, but..

My neighbour leaves their garage door open when the dryer is on. Unfortunately the dryer has something slightly wrong with it and clunks on every turn.

The wall that it rests on faces our direction and their house is slightly tucked away so we can hear it inside our house and they say they can't hear it at all

After a long chat about various things in the spring the lady agreed to close the garage door when using the dryer (although she accepted she may sometimes forget)

The reason it bothers me is because it is a repetitive banging and it doesn't need to be like that. IE if the door is shut it shows the neighbour has done what they can to dull it. Or if they fixed it it would remove the banging

I explained how it psychologically affected me and they listened and said they understood. It's very quiet around here until someone makes a noise. So something like this really stands out

I don't know if it's just me but if i can put a person's intent behind a noise i find it a lot easier to accept. So if someone across the road is cutting their drive up it is because that person has the desire to do that and there is no other way and when they are done the noise will stop. But with this dryer there is no person connected to it. It doesn't need to be spreading that much noise to work. If the door was closed it would be fine

I believe they haven't left the door open and dryer going to annoy me. Their bikes are on the drive and someone is working inside the garage

My worry is when i can't see anyone around and they've just forgotten to close it I will feel compelled to ask them to close it. Which might work but what if they do it again. I really don't want an ongoing problem where i risk falling out with them, worrying endlessly if it might happen again and how I'll feel about it

But by not saying anything maybe I already have fallen out with them and they just don't know

I live with my 80 year old mum and she's not the type to complain readily and generally she can't hear it and it doesn't bother her. So I don't have anyone in my house who agrees with me and can take some of the strain of my issue

I think part of it is the unpredictable nature of it. If i knew every Saturday between 2 & 4 it was going to be on i could brace myself for it. But i think the usage is pretty spontaneous and random (at least from my point of view)

If i hadn't already told them how much it bothers I would think that would be my next step. But seeing as I have told them and they were understanding to my needs but have still done it I don't know what to do. Essentially they don't care and they don't think it is problem

I would say our relationship is one of when we get on we really get on and when we don't we don't. There's not much of a natural rapport between us. I can't easily walk up to them and ask them to close the door

Sorry for the rambling post. It seems to be one of things that you think you can think away but when you stop doing that the problem comes back 🙄

WWYD? Vent/Rant ULPT REQUEST: Neighbours have jeopardised our dream house

We’re in the process of buying our dream home, but what should have been a straightforward issue about sharing the costs of a septic tank has potentially put the entire purchase at risk. We are based in the UK.

The property shares a sewage system with the neighbouring house, which sits on their land. The 2003 Transfer Deed states that we contribute 50% towards the costs of maintaining, repairing and emptying the tank.

During the conveyancing process, the neighbours (two bitter old c\*\*ts) started pushing for costs to be split according to the number of occupants at each property, even including our three-year-old son in their calculations.

We pointed out that the deed clearly states 50/50. They then changed their position, accepting a 50/50 split for running costs but insisting that emptying costs should be based on occupancy. Despite the deed covering emptying costs too, we agreed to their proposed arrangement as a compromise because we wanted to resolve the matter amicably.

You would think that would be the end of it.
Instead, on 8 October, the neighbours sent a formal letter through the estate agent demanding written confirmation from the sellers' solicitors that their terms were accepted. They also imposed a five-working-day deadline for payments after invoices were presented and stated that, if agreement or payment was not forthcoming, they would have to reconsider the arrangement for sharing the sewage system.

That last part is particularly concerning. Our entire property depends on a system located on their land.
The letter prompted our solicitor to raise several issues with our mortgage lender. These included the fact that the deed refers to a septic tank, the neighbours call it a cesspit, and the engineer's report identifies a sewage treatment plant. Our solicitor also identified a lack of express rights of access for inspection, maintenance and repairs, alongside a reported root ingress issue that needs clarification.

Our solicitors have now informed us that the lender has REJECTED to lend based on the presented information and we are now seeking a compromise with the lender via our mortgage broker. This will most undoubtedly mean getting our own sewage treatment plant installed.
(Cost circa 12k-15k)

Now we're facing potential delays, extra legal costs and, worst of all, the possibility of losing a home we've put a huge amount of time, money and emotion into buying.

If we do manage to complete the purchase (possibly by installing our own sewage treatment plant, especially as the owners of No. 123 will probably put their property back on the market at some point), I’ll admit I’m tempted to return the favour and make their next house sale just as straightforward as they’ve made ours. 😂

Any suitably creative, but above-board, suggestions?

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbors' dogs will not stop charging the fence and barking

About a year ago one of the houses neighboring my yard moved new people in. They have two dachshunds and I believe some sort of doodle. They are extreme nuisance barkers literally every time they are let into the yard. What essentially happens multiple times a day is they let their dogs out into the yard, the dogs immediately charge the fence, and all 3 begin barking hysterically and me and/or my dog. The owners usually do not follow the dogs outside, so they do not interrupt this behavior at all, typically let it go on for several minutes before coming to collect the dogs. They never correct the dogs for this behavior, at all.

My own dog has become extremely anxious about that fence. He watches at the back door all day for any sign of movement there unless I close the blinds. The dogs also frequently just begin barking in their own house, which due to proximity my dog can hear and becomes anxious about. He is a corgi and one of the main reasons I got him is because I am a woman living alone and appreciate that he is quick to alert when a car or trespasser pulls up to my house. He isn't extremely reactive to outside sounds, but he has become conditioned to hearing these dogs become hysterical multiple times a day as well as being harassed in our own yard, so it is actually becoming harder to keep him calm about ordinary noises.

I don't really know what to do. My understanding of noise complaints to the city is that the barking has to be sustained. It isn't necessarily sustained but it is constantly causing me grief in my own yard. It seems any time I go out there to garden or let my dog out, they let those little cunts out to immediately start barking at us. I really do not believe it would do any good to confront them about it because they clearly don't care.

I'm exhausted with living with this. Has anyone had a similar issue?

ETA: Yes, I have talked to them about it nicely. They began bringing the dogs in more quickly for a while but then they had a baby and I believe are throwing the dogs outside more often now rather than get their reactivity under control. I do not believe they are interested in or have the time needed to get the dogs under control.

Apartment NFH My Neighbors have been harassing me for the past month over a water leak..

I 23F live in a 3 bedroom apartment with 2 roommates and my dog.For the past month, I’ve heard rhythmic banging coming from my bedroom floors. It always happens at night for about an hour at a time. I tried to ignore it, but still documented the incidents just in case. Last week, the cops were called on me at 4 AM. We were told that a concerned neighbor called because we were screaming/fighting with each other and that someone might be in danger. They asked to search the house which I let them do. At 7AM the same morning maintenance came to check if there was a leak at our house. Nothing was found so I thought nothing of it. I contacted building management about both incidents so that they would be aware if anything escalated.A week later, my dog starts barking at 5 AM. I go to calm him down and notice someone is at the door. They quickly leave. When I’m back in my bed I hear a man pacing and screaming outside at my window about a fat bitch upstairs. He then enters his home and starts loudly banging on the ceiling and again screaming about “the fat bitch upstairs “ for over an hour. Fortunately I was able to record everything clearly to send to building management. I call the cops and make a report. At 8Am maintenance comes again to check on a leak. As soon as he gets in, he tells me to be careful about the downstairs neighbor. He recounted how he told them to call the maintenance emergency line if the leak reappeared and to not confront us. The maintenance man said not to open the door for them and once again confirmed there was no leak. I thought he was calling me fat because my steps were maybe too loud but I guess he thinks I’m so hefty that I’m busting the pipes?

WWYD? Vent/Rant How to deal with Karen next door?

We bought our home in 2020, and unfortunately the neighborhood Karen lives right next to us. He's been nothing but a nuisance since we moved in.

Our first interaction was him scolding me for not throwing snow into his yard when I shoveled out my driveway for the first time. But it's gotten much worse.

A few years ago, we got solar panels on our detached garage. He complained to the town that they "caused glare and we don't want to have to put shades on our window". The installer commissioned a 3rd party glare report to prove it wasn't true. Town never verified, but told us to move the panels.

We did, and soon after we were approved, they were mysteriously turned off. The technician was surprised because someone didn't throw the obvious cut off switch; there's a second, failsafe recessed switch designed in a way that animals can't trip it. That also means you can't see that it's been tripped, and resulted in having to pay the utility for power for 2 weeks.

We can't prove it was our neighbor, but no one else had any reason to touch it, nor any reason to know it was there. So we got a camera and for some reason, haven't had any more issues with that. Imagine that.

We hired a landscaper to clean up our yard a bit. The landscaper wanted to take down a weed "tree" from our yard. Karen came out to scream at him not to touch their "shade". We played nice and told him to just leave it. Even tried to build bridges by sharing homemade bread, and grilled chicken when their friend walked up to the property line to say our food smelled really good.

We were polite and let the neighbors know about landscaping work we were pursuing, including dry wells to mitigate stormwater runoff. He shrugged. No objections at all. This was over a month before applying.

We were denied permits for a patio as part of the project and sought a variance. Karen told us a few days before the zoning board meeting that he was going to speak against us because "dry wells don't mitigate stormwater, they make it worse." He waited until we paid for the application to object at all.

At the meeting, he opted to lie under oath: he falsely claimed our other neighbor was opposed to our project, but was too old to come speak against us. Those neighbors strongly support, and have been encouraging, our project. He also claimed that our driveway and garage were dumping catastrophic amounts of water on his yard that threatened to destroy his shed.

With the help of an engineer and a planner, we got a unanimous yes on our application. Enough dry wells to bring our impervious cover from about 70% down to about 50%: both neighbor stand to benefit greatly. It's a tiny yard, our experts all said this was overkill compared to the patio we were requesting. We also included a drain to explicitly mitigate stormwater where it's worst.

After months, we finally started work a few weeks ago. Our landscaper needed my car out of the driveway, so I parked on the street. Karen has 4 cars on the street, for the 2 drivers in their home...

Part of the project involved an electrician: we had to move the power line going from the house to the garage to make room for the drywells. The electrician had to confirm the power was off and physically disconnected at the house and garage so the landscaper could move the cable to another trench. That's all. 15 minutes of work.

The electrician had parked in front of Karen's house. Karen came out to scream at the crew, demanding they move because his wife was coming home with groceries. Didn't ask, just barked at them. The electrician was done before he finished ranting. Then he started asking how I'd feel if he started parking in front of my house, and then kept ranting when I said I wouldn't care because it's a public street.

Today, the landscaper finished pouring cement: the bulk of the drywells are under the driveway, fed by drains. Two across the driveway, a ditch around the new patio, and a downspout from the house. Our camera got a shot of Karen's kid kneeling in the grass with a laser level because Karen thought the driveway "looks sloped towards my yard." Yelled at my BF for it while he was taking out the garbage.

Landscaper did string leveling and followed the engineering plans to conform to the driveway he tore out. He raised it at the back to aim water into the drain. He offered to come back out immediately to confirm the neighbor was full of shit: he confirmed it was level, matched the grading he was required by the town to follow, and then took the tape off the drains since the concrete had set enough. The town also inspected before he poured concrete and confirmed he was doing the work correctly and according to the engineering blueprints.

But Karen ranted at him while he checked his work. "I can see it's sloped towards my yard. I didn't have any problem with water coming off their driveway before. If I get water in my yard from this, I'm calling the town. And my lawyer."

I'm not particularly worried about him following through: I have the transcript from the variance meeting where he claimed to be getting catastrophic amounts of water from our driveway, and an official copy is maintained by the town. So if he does convince a lawyer to sue, he would either be admitting to perjury at the zoning board meeting, or committing perjury with the complaint. He's just really obnoxious.

How do you deal with a neighbor who enjoys lying to create issues to be mad at? It's frustrating, and killing them with kindness has done absolutely nothing.

Vent/Rant Elderly neighbor smoked inside

• Upvotes

I had a crash-out today when a neighbor smoked inside with the door open.

- Building is smoking forbidden

- New laws also make it forbidden

I yelled at them.

Anyone else with stories?

Vent/Rant Neighbors called the cops on me for expired tags

I just moved to a small town and we have parking in front of our building for residents. I haven't had money to pay for new tags because I had to move, and I'm waiting on my deposit that my landlord confirmed she's going to give back next month. I truly can't imagine how miserable people have to be to worry about something like that. It makes me sad.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbors are livid and acting out about fence

This issue spans a year and a half. I’d prefer to not move - we fixed up this house so it’s 100% updated. My question is, I know that I can’t stop people from acting ridiculous, but what can we do aside from blocking our neighbors out to force them into compliance/ get them to leave us alone?

For context, we have an easement on our land that allows a neighbor to access their landlocked property. We have a survey, we haven’t don’t anything against the deed, I’ve had 3 lawyers review all docs to ensure I’m not going insane and in the right. The township also noted we are within their ordinances and have done nothing wrong - even their solicitor reviewed everything and confirmed we are within our rights. We owe them access - they want unrestricted access and extending their use of our property as staging, parking, etc. IN MY FRONT YARD. Nothing in the deed indicates that is within their rights.

I have a timeline, cameras, downloaded clips and police reports to corroborate all of their behavior and the slow progression of changes. We really tried to give them a chance to do better. We were honest about our concerns.

The neighbor has a high volume of traffic - fine. However, they travel down this gravel driveway at a speed that tosses gravel into our yard and kicks us dust. We have small kids. Before just fencing we talked to them - give them a chance to know what’s going on and work together so it works for everyone. Immediately didn’t care. Immediately started spinning tire to kick up rocks and speeding because they knew we were worried. The neighbors AND their guests all do this. They also turn up their music at the top of the driveway at night and sit just to wake us up. They turn it down pulling out onto the road. I have cameras and videos of everything - police didn’t help much there but did finally help with spinning tire because it happens around my 2 year old.

We spoke to them 4 times. They never ceased. We never escalated our behavior, only began avoiding the yard and them as best as possible.

After months of being patient and slowly adding additional safety measures, we ended up installing a simple field fence to keep our son off the driveway and across the area of our yard they were using for parking. They were meeting up with people at night (think 11-2) and waking us up. Either way, I don’t want strangers on my yard for any reason at any time. This lady also goes to other neighbors to try to get them to go against us. The township has had to tell them all multiple times we didn’t do anything wrong, get a lawyer if you’re mad, and that they can’t do anything to help them.

They aren’t happy despite never having access removed. They and their guests continue to speed and spin tire, play loud music, and will give us the finger in front of our kids. I know the kids don’t get it yet, but I choose what’s ok for them. We are going to privacy fence the entire way up to block them, since they are triggered by the sight of us. We are allowed to do this and will go to the township to ensure our plan meets ordinances to be 100% on that side. They will 100% be mad about a privacy fence - at least we can use more of our yard and get to our cars without them seeing us.

Vent/Rant Struggling after moving into a new block!

I've just moved and my new place needs a lot of work done. I have building going on most of the day. Believe me it's not fun for me. My landlord wouldn't arrange it so I had to sort it out myself. I know it's a nuisance but my one neighbour is constantly badgering me about it! She claims it starts too early and ends too late but I'm within the legal times so I don't know what her issue is! It's just so frustrating that it has to get done and I know it's annoying but to have someone complaining all the time is even more annoying! I've spoken to other neighbours in the block and it seems they've had issues with her before. I just feel bad because she's disabled but also feel like it's not an excuse to be shitty to me!

WWYD? Vent/Rant WWYD About Miserable Downstairs Neighbor?

I’ve had bad neighbors before, but this woman is an all-timer. My wife and I moved into this apartment a year ago and the downstairs neighbor has been a problem from day one. As we were moving in our boxes, she introduced herself by pounding on our door and asking us “Have you ever even lived in an apartment before??” For context, most of the unit is carpeted, and this was at 4pm. I told her we would be pretty chill neighbors once we got our stuff moved in, and she just left in a huff.

Since then, we’ve heard her screaming and cussing at us anytime we make any amount of noise after 9pm. Just walking to our bedroom is enough to set her off, and she makes sure to keep her window open so everyone in the building can hear just how furious she is. She constantly files noise complaints, but management has told us that they ignore them because she’s had the same issue with every other upstairs neighbor she’s had, and she’s basically been a huge problem tenant for years. The manager said she is a “vile woman” who loves to drag everyone else into her rage. They’re on our side which is nice to know, but they’ve also told us they can’t really do anything besides document it in case things escalate.

I tried bringing her cookies once early on, and based on the glimpse I got of her dark and dirty apartment, it definitely seems like she is just someone who lives in misery and looks for any opportunity to lash out at others. I honestly feel really bad for her, and try to just ignore her screaming as much as I can, but I find myself getting so anxious knowing that there is this volatile woman screaming at me every night over almost nothing. She brings so much negativity to our home life and I can’t imagine her ever stopping. What would you do?

WWYD? Vent/Rant Caught Them in the act and they're laughing

So after 4 months of daily mess, I confronted them today. So I was going to my terrace, and guess what, the woman was using a pipe to clean her terrace entrance, and I caught her in the act and confronted her. And she is laughing/smiling. I swear it got on my nerves, and it was so tough maintaining my composure. (Well, she went inside with the pipe when she heard me on the stairs, but you know, there was water.) (Ps. If one wants to go to their terrace, they gotta use the common stairs to go up) And you know what her excuse is: "I just sprinkle water in the morning before puja (religious ritual/praing))".

And I was like, " This is not sprinkling" and she then changed the narrative to "it's a slope, that's why it happens, it hoes from my door to yours bcs if the slope". Meanwhile she refused to come out when I asked her to come and see what she does.

Then she started saying that water from our side also flows towards their entrance. I pointed out that we never pour water like that, and she responded, “It's rainwater.” The irony is that the drainage on the staircase roof wasn't working, and her husband had actually argued with my father about it. We'd only recently moved in, while they'd been living here for God knows how many years. Yet my father was the one who eventually got it fixed. And then this woman had the audacity to say, “Should I fall at your feet now?” followed by, “I won't even clean anymore.” Like, get a grip! You're not cleaning the common areas; you're washing your own entrance and letting the dirty water flow towards other people's doorways and onto the stairs. And when someone finally asks you to stop making a mess, you act as though they're asking you to beg for forgiveness. I'm so angry right now. And to top it all off, they still haven't removed the garbage bag they've been storing under the stairs for the past four months. The entrance to my flat, the terrace entrance, and the entire staircase look like a construction site after the workers have left. I'm just so tired of dealing with this. Whenever I step out the door its an eyesore.
