New Student Coming to monash as an international student - want friends!

I’m moving to Australia to study music at monash and would like to meet and get to know others beforehand. I wanna have a social circle and people I know and trust by the time I arrive in February to share the experience with and have fun :)

If interested, we can play video games, watch movies, call and such. I’m pretty extroverted and love having deep discussions and sharing interests and ngl brain rot sometimes haha. My interests are: music, self improvement books and content, skateboarding, video games.

Dm me if you’re down!

Advice How do i know to continue with engineering?

I'm currently in my first year and really debating whether or not I want to go on with this. If I do enrol, I'll be doing mechanical eng and I've heard some scary things about it. It's always been a dream of mine to work in the industry but idk if it's realistic anymore.

Main reason I'm so unsure is because I'm currently doing ENG1005, 1012, 1013 and probably won't pass 1014 since I'm just not able to keep up with all the workload due to some psychological issues. 1012 is guaranteed to be a HD and I'll be aiming the same for 1013. 1005 will probably be a C. Last sem was decent since I didn't fail any units. I'm aware that underloading will be the way to go next year just to keep my sanity and will get help in the holidays.

My other choice is doing industrial design at RMIT which I know I will get in. But I don't know if I'll transfer or start fresh.

Would really appreciate some help with this

Advice Engineering Masters accelerated or minor?

I'm currently first year enrolled in E3001 and I got accepted to masters accelerated engineering when enrolling, but this would take up my 3rd and 4th year electvies meaning I wouldn't be able to do a minor

Anyone here have advice on whether I should do the accelerated masters pathway or do a minor instead, which would be better? If I do a minor do I need to contact monash to change my course or just enrol myself into those units? Thanks in advance

Advice Master of nursing practise placements

Hi all,
Was wondering where people did their placements for the master of nursing practise at monash.
I live in the west and was wondering if there is a preference system to get placements closer to home ?
I have also been accepted at melbourne but would prefer monash as I completed my undergrad there, however am worried all of my placements will be over that side of town.
Thanks !!

Discussion Wtf is wrong with the uni

Dang, what the hell is going on with this university? 🙂
I had a terrible groupwork experience and ended up completing most of the work by myself. The assessment was already finished and submitted last week. I filled out the form, emailed the teaching team and the unit coordinator, and honestly, the way they’ve handled this situation is seriously concerning. First, they gave me a two-day extension to discuss the issues with my team, which was completely pointless because the work had already been completed and submitted. 10 days later, they gave us another week to review the work, revise the videos and submit meeting records. 🙂 i genuinely don’t understand why they chose to handle the situation this way. They initially said there would be a meeting to address the professionalism issues and that marks would be allocated based on individual contributions. And now this is their solution? 🙂
Instead of addressing the unequal contributions and lack of accountability, they’re making us go through the whole groupwork process again which is no use. It’s not their assignment the only thing to di
No wonder there are so many people who don’t take group assignments seriously when this is how these issues are handled. 🙂

Advice Help applying for special consideration

Like a complete idiot, I missed out on my 30% in semester online assessment because I thought it would be in week 12 instead of week 11. I already sent a special consideration form (3 days late) and an email to my unit coordinator.

I know I’m 99% going to get decline and cooked for this unit but is there anything I can do to increase my chances like contacting student union or anything?

Advice 2nd Year Civil Engineering Units

Hey, much appreciated if any later year ENG students can give me some feedback/advice.

I'm taking ENG2005 in sem 1 since it is a prerequisite to literally every elective I wanted or needed for my Mining minor. I'm also very interested in doing CIV2283 elective, but it can only ever be taken in sem 1 of 2nd year .

Due to these two units I had no space left for CIV2282 (transport and traffic)😢.

It can't be taken in sem 2 which left two empty slots for me. Since there is no other 2nd year unit that I can fit there, I decided to take the two mining electives instead.

I'm guessing that I'll just have to take CIV2282 in sem 1 of 3rd year. Is this a good decision?

Also, are there much semster-long group projects in 2nd year civil? Anything like the ones from ENG1011 or ENG1013?

Thank you

Support Gym friends

Hi everyone!

I am an international student moving to Melbourne soon and will be based at Monash Clayton. I am a total nerd and have zero gym experience. I havw never touched a barbell and have no idea how most of the machines work 😅

I would like to start building a healthy routine, so I have a few questions:

Which gyms on or near Clayton campus would you recommend? (Monash’s own gym, Anytime Fitness, Fitness First, anything else?) I would love to hear about price, how crowded it gets, and whether it is beginner-friendly.

Are the regular gym-goers there usually willing to help a beginner? I am nervous about looking clueless, but I am happy to ask politely and learn. Is it okay to ask for form checks or how a machine works?

Are there beginner classes, orientation sessions, or student groups that would be good for someone starting from scratch?

I woudl also like to make friends! I am new to the city, so if anyone wants a gym buddy, or if there are social sports or fitness clubs for newcomers, I'd really love to hear about them.

Any advice for a first-timer is welcome, whether it is gym etiquette, what to wear, how to start, or things you wish you had known.

Thank you so much! 🙏 ☺️

Discussion What topics are covered in BCH2011?

Hey y'all

I'm looking for a science unit to do next semester and found BCH2011. But I'm not really sure what topics this will cover.

I was wondering if anyone who has done it can give a list of topics in this unit? Was there a lot of chem? How does it compare to vce chem? In terms of assessments, 45% is in-semester tests - are these invigilated tests or like weekly moodle quizzes you can do at home and how many are there?

For context, I've only done vce chem (none in uni) and bio1011 and bio1022. Is this level enough to easily understand the content we'll learn in this unit?

Thanks in advance :))

Discussion How are incoming monash students spending the months before uni?

My friends who went to Canadian, UK and US unis told me that their unis connected them to other incoming students months before their courses started, and i'm curious about how it is at monash.

I received my offer fairly early, and I've been getting HUGEEE uni fomo as an extrovert. 😭😭 There's still basically a whole semester between now and February, and I'm wondering what other incoming students have been doing during this period— since I've mostly just been lounging around at home.

A few of us actually made an informal Instagram gc for incoming Monash students, and it's grown to ~50 people. We've mostly been yapping on Google Meet and playing Gartic Phone, but it's been really nice getting to know people before uni starts—though, that's only a tiny fraction of the incoming cohort, so I'm curious what everyone else's experience has been.

For current students, did you get to know people before arriving, or did most of your friendships start at O-Week? And for other 2027 offer holders, how are you finding the wait?

New Student I'm really scared :(

I'm an (potential) incoming student in semester 1, 2027, from interstate and i got offered RV accommodation but turned it down because I made my preference in the application for UC. Did i make a mistake not taking the original RV offer even though I applied for UC? I'm really scared I might not get offered anything else. What are the chances i get offered anything else, even if it's not studio apartments?

For context, i was going to apply on the day it opened but i wanted to have time to read the conditions and ended up applying the second day.

Discussion New IT course map making me graduate a sem later

found this out last week i’m lowkey crashing out.

basically FIT2004 is gone, replaced with FIT3234 data structures and algorithms 2. FIT3163 is now FIT3230 and FIT3164 is now FIT3231.

fine whatever, units get replaced. the actual problem is FIT3231 only runs sem 2. FIT3164 used to run both.
and all three are a chain where each one is a prereq for the next, so earliest i can do FIT3234 is sem 1 2027, that puts FIT3230 in sem 2 2027, and then FIT3231 cant happen until sem 2 2028. no sem 1 2028 offering, nothing over summer. so theres just a dead semester sitting in the middle that i cant do anything with.

for context ive underloaded and had some units not go my way, so im already behind, which is why im only starting FIT3234 in 2027. thats on me. but even accounting for that, under the old setup i was finishing sem 1 2028 because FIT3164 ran both semesters. the sem 2 only thing is what adds an extra semester on top of where i already was.

thats a whole extra semester for me. extra fees, graduating later, and my load drops under 75% at the end which messes with youth allowance.

couple other things if youre in DSAI:
• FIT3152 now has FIT2094 as a prereq
• FIT3080's 2027 page still lists FIT2004 as its prereq and FIT2004 doesnt exist anymore

has anyone heard whether FIT3231 is getting a sem 1 offering in 2028? or whether you can do FIT3161/FIT3162 instead, since FIT3231 lists FIT3161 as an alternative prereq. ive emailed connect asking about transition arrangements, nothing back yet.

Advice Monash Master of Pharmaceutical Science vs UQ Master of Pharmaceutical Industry Practice — Which is better for pharmaceutical jobs in Australia?

Title: Monash Master of Pharmaceutical Science vs UQ Master of Pharmaceutical Industry Practice — Which is better for pharmaceutical jobs in Australia?
Hi everyone,
I’m an international student from India with a B.Pharm degree (CGPA 9.12/10), and I’ve received an offer for the Master of Pharmaceutical Science at Monash University (Melbourne). I’m also considering the Master of Pharmaceutical Industry Practice (MPIP) at the University of Queensland (UQ) for the February 2027 intake.
I’m struggling to decide because my main goal is to secure a pharmaceutical-sector job in Australia after graduation and repay my education loan as quickly as realistically possible.
My background and financial situation:
B.Pharm graduate from India, with a CGPA of 9.12/10.
Interested in pharmaceutical R&D, formulation development, QA/QC, regulatory affairs and clinical research.
I am willing to consider different pharmaceutical-industry roles rather than restricting myself to drug discovery.
The tuition fees differ by only around ₹4 lakh between the two courses.
I need to take an education loan.
I don’t currently have a confirmed scholarship.
Ideally, I want to repay the loan within 7 years after graduation, although I understand this may be difficult.
My questions:
For international students who completed either course, how difficult was it to secure a relevant pharmaceutical-industry job after graduation?
Does UQ’s MPIP provide meaningful industry placements, and how many students actually secure them? Are placements paid or unpaid?
Does Monash’s Master of Pharmaceutical Science provide sufficient practical industry experience to improve employment prospects?
Which course is more useful for entry-level jobs in QA/QC, regulatory affairs, clinical research, formulation development and pharmaceutical R&D?
Are graduates getting relevant professional jobs, or are many working in unrelated casual jobs while searching?
How long did it take you to secure your first relevant job, and what salary range is realistic for an international graduate?
If you were taking an education loan which course would you choose, and why?
I’m not looking for university rankings or promotional answers. I’d especially appreciate responses from current students, recent graduates and people working in the Australian pharmaceutical industry.
Would you choose Monash or UQ in my financial situation? Please be honest about the risks. Thank you!
