Negativity and spam

It seems we have had a large uptick in content lately which is great, unfortunately this has also driven negative comments and false reports.

This subreddit is here for people of all skill levels and while some level of criticism is important, please do try to keep things on the positive side and don't just downvote things that you don't like, we are very fortunate to live in a city with an extremely diverse music scene, this means there will always be music not catered to your tastes being made, downvoting things out of hand or because you think its "bad" is not how I would like to see this sub go on

That being said...

We need to have a conversation about spam

I understand that with the rise of TikTok shorter clips have become the norm and you are more than welcome to post any work you do here, but I am going to restrict users to posting ONE clip/vid/link per song per day, I don't care if it's a 5 second cover of "You Suffer" or a 6 hr prog rock epic, if you post multiple clips of the same song on the same day, they will be removed, if it continues, so will you.

As a moderator I want to be as hands off as I can, leaving this as much like a community noticeboard as possible, but mostly I want everyone who uses this space to have a positive experience, this means curbing negative behaviour and making sure that people don't have to wade through a sea of the same content over and over

Thank you for reading

Moderation - New rule

I know the SR is a bit rudderless, I'm here to tell you I still check in on posts. Between raising a family, work, gym, music and all the other shit we have to do in post-modern life I have little time to be moderating a subreddit so, I'm not going to tolerate misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc etc.

New rule, Don't be a cunt. No, I'm not going to talk about it, cant be fucked. I'll just ban you, message me, ill probably say something funny and rude, this will be entirely at my own discretion.

I will not tolerate intolerance

Cheers :P

northcote theatre queueing etiquette

Hi, im attending a concert at northcote theatre soon of an international artist catered towards younger people. I want to get a good view (im quite short) but i am not from melbourne, so i don’t know the etiquette for northcote theatre. honestly, so i wouldn’t be as comfortable lining up all day. I am from brisbane, and i have lined up for smaller music halls (fortitude music hall), but northcote is significantly smaller than what im used to.

is Northcote comparable to the queueing culture at the Forum? is it more chill, if so what time would you recommend is a good time before the gates open to secure a good spot?

follow up question for anyone who has attended/queued at Northcote theatre, are there public toilets and food venues around? and as a solo concert goer, is it safe to take public transport back to the city at night?

thank you for your help!

Fatboy Slim and Chase and Status... On the same day?!

Got tickets with friends to see Fatboy Slim in Melbourne in March next year.

Waited YEARS for my favourite drum and bass artist, Chase and Status, to return to Melbourne... And it's ALSO on 13th March next year!

Anyone else in this predicament? Does anyone think C&S date could get moved?

Hip hop/dance on Melbourne radio in the 1980s

Hello MM. I’m a current presenter on 3RRR FM which turns 50 this year. As part of that I’m hosting a live event at the station this Thursday night to celebrate Wheels of Steel, a show which played hip hop, R&B, house and dance music and was an early champion of the developing local hip hop scene. As part of this and to provide context, I’m trying to piece together what else was happening on Melbourne radio up to and around this time, in terms of hip hop and dance music. This is what I’ve been able to work out so far, but would love any details, names or stories from people who remember those days.

197x-1982? Soul Show 3RRR - Helen Thomas
1981?-1984? Electro Beat/Metal Beat/Electronic Music Show 3RRR - Joseph Sgro
1982?-1984? The Disco Show ('Blame it on the Disco'?) 3RRR - Paul Jackson, Jules Taylor ‘Black urban contemporary music.’
1983 Beat Treatment 3RRR - Andrew Maine ‘the best disco, funk, soul and rap, and all their infamous offspring’
1983-1999 Soul Funk Fusion 3PBS - Simon Goh
1986?-1987 Danceteria 3RRR - Sally Ford
1985-198x? Disco Club 3RRR - Allan & Arronn (was this Alen Rados and Aaron Soni?)
1986-1988 Pulsation Club 3RRR - Alen Rados
1986-1988? Beats Per Minute 3RRR - Alen Rados
1986-1989 Dance Till Dawn 3RRR - Paul Marinelli
1986 This Island Earth 3PBS - ??
1988-1991 Wheels of Steel 3RRR - Kieron Meagher, Rob Farley, Chase
1988-1989 Kingdom Kome 3RRR - Shawn King
1988-1998 Interzone 3PBS - ??
1988-1989? Radio Head 3CR - DJC & Axel
1988-1990 ?? 3CR - Nadine Rub-a-Dub
1988?-1997? P Jam 3CR - P Jam
1989-199x Storm the Studio 3RRR - Steve Polak, Roger Polak
1989 Disc Charge 3RRR - Paul Marinelli
1989-1993 Beats n Things 3PBS - DJC feat. P Jam, Krisy (who took over the show in 1993 as Steppin' to the AM)
1989-199x Live and Direct 3PBS - Idem
1989-1990 Souled Out 3WRB - Ken Walker
1989-1993 Fat Free 3WRB - Max Hollywood

Also interested in learning about what Liz Millar was doing on radio in the 80s.

ETA updates as I get new info.

Any Sun City Girls fans here. Sir Richard Bishop will be playing free in Footscray Records on Tuesday night

SIR RICHARD BISHOP LIVE IN FOOTSCRAY RECORDS (Tuesday 20th Oct)

We are excited to have Sir Richard Bishop performing a special once off all-ages performance in our shop. Best known for his work with the boundary-pushing Sun City Girls, Bishop has spent decades exploring the outer reaches of experimental guitar, drawing on everything from American primitive, ragas, global folk traditions, free improvisation, noise, drone and classic punk and rock music motifs. Joining him are local favourites/the Footscray Records house band, Kelowna Cinderblock, (formerly known as High School Students Play the Velvet Underground [one day they will be truly free of it]). This will be a shorter set from Sir Richard Bishop, offering a chance to experience his singular playing in the intimate surrounds of Footscray Records and a little taste of what's in store for the upcoming show at The Curtin on Thursday.

Starting at 7pm. Drinks will be available. Free entry. All ages. Space is very limited. Respect the space.

New song (please don’t be harsh)

Hey guys, I just wanted to share my song that came out today. It's got a long intro (I know everyone hates it but it's what called to me) and I mix and produce, everything by myself so it's not mixed amazingly but I tried my best and I would just love to see if anyone likes it.

I'm not asking for feedback cause TRUST ME I KNOW WHATS WRONG WITH IT. but I am one person who is still learning and I can only do with what knowledge I've got.

But anyway have a gander

Hey everyone!
I'm a Korean-based pianist planning to head to Melbourne next year.
Are there any music communities for students or local musicians?
Also looking for cool places for jam sessions and jazz gigs!

Is there any way to find session work or music jobs in Australia?"

I know facebook groups !!
