BikeTag Welcome to Bike Tag Melbourne

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL OWNERS

I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we call Melbourne, the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin and pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

I acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wadawurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin have to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

THE GAME

Part scavenger hunt, part hide-and-seek and part race, BikeTag is a mystery photo tag game played on bicycles.

It starts with a player who posts a picture of their bike at a “mystery location” somewhere in the greater Melbourne area.

The goal here is to be the first person to figure out where that is, ride your bike to that same spot and take a photo of your bike there.

Then you ride to a different location take your bike's photo at the new “mystery location” as the next place to find for everyone else. Both pictures are posted in a self post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride.
  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time.

CREDITS

The origins of the game of BikeTag, as far as I have been able to track, put the game in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2007. BikeTag on Reddit was started on in 2011 on r/BikingATX, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike. The game in r/CyclePDX was created in 2016 and a website called BikeTag.org was created in 2018 as a tool for the game in Portland, Oregon but has since started other cities across the globe.

Other Bike cooperative / tool hire

Hi

I’m relatively new to Melbourne

I’m thinking about building my own wheels but don’t really want to spend hundreds on a trying stand. In other places in lived there have been cooperatives where you can use or rent workstations, or companies that hire out tools.

I’ve looked, but can’t seem to find any, was wondering if anyone here might know if any?

Thanks

Infrastructure Mapped and photographed: every bike hoop in Melbourne Park and Yarra Park (MCG)

The bike parking hoops at the MCG are plentiful and easy to find - but around AAMI Park and Rod Laver Arena it’s not at all obvious where to lock up before an event.

I photographed and updated the locations of every bike parking rack here
(they’re also submitted to OpenStreetMap so others can tap into the same corrections).

A bit of signage would go well here, as I often see people during the week locking up to poles and handrails because the bike racks are tucked out of the way.

No doubt regular bike riders in this area know about all of these - but sharing for anyone who might not know.

Does anyone know what they are doing here? Can’t find any published plans, but it looks like the bike lane is cooked.

Anyone else tripped up/pissed off by the St Kilda Road Princes Hwy off ramp bike lane design?

Post image
36 Upvotes

Might be just me paying crap attention, but has this design tripped other riders up seeing it for the first time?

As a pretty defensive/alert rider who rides/commutes 7 days a week, I could not interpret this intersection on the fly coming across it for the first time at night on Sunday evening.

Coming down the hill from the previous intersection with some decent speed 30+km/h and suddenly the lane is forced up onto a shared footpath and then seemingly ramps back onto the road with a painted green lane (which I would assume means a protected or highlighted lane - clearly wrong).

In the dark and at speed there's absolutely no chance to see the solid 'stop' line or the pathetic tiny 'cyclists stop on red signal' sign, and if I had I probably couldn't have stopped in time. All good if you know this spot, not if it's your first (possibly last time ever) riding it.

When and why did planners start doing this hybrid bike/footpath stopping at footpath lights nonsense? Or green straight road lights and red bike lights while cars turn? And if they're forcing us on 'footpaths' and crossings, WHY paint the crossing green as if it's a continuing on bike lane and not a crossing I have to stop for.

Hoping it's not just me frustrated by the over-complicated 'bike infrastructure' where I actually feel safer on a dual carriageway with parked cars and no 'infrastructure' at all.

Beginner Cycling Groups Around Oakleigh / Chadstone

Hey everyone! I’m based around the Oakleigh / Chadstone area and looking to find some people or groups to ride with.

I’m a complete beginner to cycling, but I can comfortably maintain around 25–30 km/h on the bike. Keen to get out more, build my fitness, learn from more experienced riders and meet some people along the way.

Are there any beginner-friendly cycling groups or regular social rides around the area that you’d recommend?

Seeking Recommendation MSAC bike parking security

Does anyone know how safe is it to lock up your bike at MSAC? Im looking at doing some gym sessions at MSAC in Albert park. The easiest way for me to get there is to cycle commute in and I’m trying to work out if it’s safe to take my nice road bike down or if I should look at getting a beater.

Seeking Recommendation social cycling club

Does anyone have a recommendation for a social cycling club? I'm in my late 20s and am after something that gets me out of the house and with some people of similar ages (20/30s) but my fitness is not currently coping with long distance rides and I'd ideally love a lgbt and/or mixed gender group. I live in hawthorn

Seeking Recommendation Cadel Evans Road Race - Elite Women's and Men's

As I am into pro cycling sports, so I want to watch a bike race in person. From what I have researched so far, pros that will do Tour Down Under will generally do Cadel Evans Road Race which is two weeks after TDU wraps up. I know we won't have the heavyweight hitters crossing the globe to race in Australia, we'd get superdomestiques at best.

Just wondering for those of you who have been to Cadel Evans Road Race and Tour Down Under which one is more worth it to go to?

Williamstown/St Kilda/Brighton

Last week I cycled capital city and bit of yarra and merri creek. This week I tried Williamstown/St Kilda/Brighton. The boss of Blue Tongue made it a lot easier for me by scanning the QR code and the trails appeared on google maps. I even took the punt, unfortunately no cafe food this time as the cafe I ended up around 1pm had finished their pasta/soup/salad of the day - just hot chips. Ended up running late returning the bike, and the boss gave me good directions to get back. Big day for me, 75km albeit electric bike

I’ve done Boulie, Albert Park, and Beach road 100 times. Any suggestions for some good road riding that isn’t 50ks from home?

Commuting etiquette?

Been commuting for a couple years on and off due to changing circumstances, but usually <5km each way, so not getting heaps of riding time.

Wondering about common riding etiquette/strategies I should know about? Things like turning or going off path in front of other cyclists, other points to give way, overtaking, bell use, other little points of friction I sometimes notice on rides with both cyclists and cars and don't know what is best/safest/most polite to do. Other advice I've seen previously like riding in the middle of the bike lane when there's parked cars to one side seems rude here when there are so many other cyclists also using the lane.

I don't know any other riders here in Melbourne and I'm so slow that it's tricky for me to observe what other cyclists do very much as they're often far ahead of me very quickly.

Any common hints or rules? What might be some good ways to actually pick up some of this info? Thank youuuu

Anyone know the wave start times for around the bay classic?

First time doing this - Apparently I should have gotten an email, but don't seem to have received anything. Going for the slowest speed, wave 4.

Alternatively would be nice to know what a representative time is - whether that would be closer to 5:45 or 6:15 for example.

Personal Achievement After a long recovery from a badly smashed up knee, I was finally able to get back on my bike for the first time in almost a year this week.

I missed riding my humble little commuter. I can't remember the last time I felt so much joy as when I took it out for my first ride this week.

I set a goal early in rehab of entering the 50k ride of ATB this weekend. My physio told me that I might be a bit ambitious, but to absolutely give it a crack.

She was right about the 50k. I don't think I have that much in my legs yet. But I'll be doing some laps of the lake in the family ride on Sunday. So if you see a deliriously happy middle aged bloke lapping Albert Park Lake on this Giant, give us a wave!

Might have to set a goal for the half in 2027 hey?

Travelling overseas with a bike...

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello all,

I'm planning to ride from Seoul to Busan along the beautiful 600+km bike path in June 2027. The romantic idea is to create memories with my trusty Straggler (pictured mainly to get attention), but part of me thinks it might be a bit of a hassle to buy, store, and forward a bike case around the country. Pragmatically, and potentially financially, it might just be better to hire a bike, and I'll still have a blast. Reaching out to the Reddit brain trust:

For those who travelled with a bike:

  1. Why did you take your bike?
  2. What did you do with your bike travel case?
  3. How much of a fuss did the airline create (I'm flying Jetstar, so...)?
  4. Was it worth it?

For those that didn't, but biked around;

  1. Why did you hire a bike rather than bring your own?
  2. Do you regret hiring rather than riding your own bike?
  3. Were there any things that you should've bought for your tour that you didn't?

Bonus points if you've cycled from Seoul to Busan! Any additional tips are welcome. I won't be 'bike packing' per se (staying in motels/hotels along the path), but I will have my trumpet (strapped to a rear rack), toiletries, lightweight clothes, and a few small pieces of tech (in a handlebar bag/frame bag), a stem bag (snacks), and I'll also be bringing a cage, multitool, hiplock, and helmet, of course.

Melbourne cycling

Hi everyone! I've been cycle touring down the coast from Newcastle to Melbourne. I've mostly completed my tour now, having just finished the Great Southern Rail Trail, and cycled up to the train line and caught the train into the city where I'm staying. However I feel like I cheated the last section a little getting the train in! I'm hoping to get the train back out to the suburbs somewhere and ride in over the course of a day, maybe like 50-60ks. What route should I take? I'm not super keen on vehicular cycling, so was hoping someone would have a good route into the city.

Close Lakeside Drive to cars

Hi,
I frequently ride and run on lakeside drive at Albert park as it is a great place to do intervals as it is flat and smooth. Is there any push to stop cars on lakeside drive? For cars it only really serves as a shortcut to Albert rd. There isn’t really any destinations on this side of the lake like there is on the other side, e.g. MSAC, ovals.

The benefits of banning cars would be enormous, dedicated space for runners and cyclists with no danger of cars, possibility for running or cycling races with little disruption.

Is there any push for this or is there something I’m overlooking?

Cheers
