Welcome to r/lost. This is the subreddit for the ABC TV show Lost (2004-2010).

EPISODE DISCUSSION FOR FIRST TIME WATCHERS

Please adhere to the guidelines in the series hub.

Season 1

Season 2

Season 3

Season 4

Season 5

Season 6

- I'm hesitant about watching the show. I've heard that the ending is giant cop-out

Unfortunately, due to various reasons, a big group misinterpreted the ending. This spread fast. If you've heard that the characters were dead since the plane crash then you've been misformed about the ending. This isn't true.

- I've started watching the show, can I still post here?

Yes. Feel free to post. Use the First-Time Watcher flair and add in your questions, theories and discussion topics. We always thrive on new Lostaways. Just be very cautious and tell us where you are in the show (season and episode). Beware of spoilers!

- I'm nearing the end of the show, but there's an uncut version of the finale and a two-parter. Which to watch?

There's only one version of the finale that was approved by the showrunners. The uncut version that runs about 106 minutes. ABC cut down a two-parter series finale for syndication, in case of reruns of the show. This version was sent to various streaming services. Now, most streaming services have both versions. The uncut and the two-parter. The uncut is the one that was aired, approved and the only one you need to watch.

- I've just finished the show. What now?

Check out the epilogue. Click here for a thread of additional content. Or the FAQ archive which consist of various questions about the show.

Discussion How to handle this

Yesterday for the first time in my life (married 43 years) my husband and I talked about Lost. I’ve just recently watched it through for the first time, he watched all of it a while ago, maybe even when it was first aired.
Anyway, yesterday he asked me how I liked the ending, which he didn’t really care for since they were dead the whole time. I said they weren’t dead, they died eventually and met up in the church, but they weren’t dead after the place crash.
How do I communicate with a person that thinks they were dead the whole time?

Santa Rosa Mental Institute Tree has fallen 😢

My wife and I visited many Lost sites for our 20th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii this past June. We watched the show every week back when it first aired and told each other that one day, for our 20th anniversary, we would make the trip to Hawaii and visit a lot of these filming locations.
The huge tree at the “Santa Rosa Mental Institute” was one of those locations we were really looking forward to visiting. I did all of my research months in advance. Made notes, mapped out the routes, took plenty of screen shots that I would use to make comparison shots.
You can imagine our surprise when we rounded the corner of the building to see that the huge tree had recently fallen. I’m not sure what caused it to fall. There was no one around to talk to about it on campus. These photos were taken on June 20, 2026. Figured I’d share.

Watched The Good, The Bad and The Ugly for the first time and I see a parallel to Tuco and Mr. Eko

It is the most beloved, well known, and referenced western...and I had never seen it in its entirety till recently.

One thing I was shocked to learn is that Tuco is arguably the main character of the story (I always assumed Clint Eastwood was).

Another thing that caught my attention was how similiar Tuco is to Mr. Eko in relation to his brother and why he chose the life he did.

Tuco, Pablo, Eko, and Yemi were dealt a shitty hand and born in awful environments. Tuco and Eko "decided" to become criminals, while their brother got to keep their hands clean and pursue religion.

Hence why the brothers resent each other.

One looks down on the other for being a criminal, the other looks down on the other for being self righteous. Tuco even calls Pablo "cowardly".

I just found it funny how this movie is decided to watch reminded me of one of my favorite shows.

I'm counting how many times next rewatch.

I'm currently halfway through Season 5 so it's too late, but next time I do a rewatch I will keep tabs on how many fuckin times Locke gets injured on his leg, and has trouble walking lol. I get it's probably supposed to tie into the back break but I think every season something happens. Off the top of my head I can think of 3, all from different seasons.

Character Question Need some opinions! Definite SPOILERS AHEAD (don't know how to hide them) Spoiler

I'm curious about some people's opinions on this. Why do you think Locke ultimately was about to commit suicide after just one attempt speaking with everyone? It seems out of character that he would give up so easily, I get he was feeling defeated, but I feel like he would have found a way if he kept trying. Hell, he should have just broke his promise to Jin and spoke with Sun. I mean that's all it took for her to agree on a return trip.

And then I am also curious on the opinions of Ben, preventing the suicide, then committing the murder. I understand Ben has always been envious of Locke. They ultimately are on the same side in wanting to protect the island, and they would be a powerful duo. Plus at that point Ben is trying to get back like everyone else, I just don't see him having the foresight that Benthams death would eventually lead everyone back.

Forgive me if I am missing some context, I am doing a rewatch, haven't seen the show in years so I forget some of the little details after this part (which is where I am at).

Does Jack refuse to learn about what Kate did in Tabula Rasa, partially because of his ex wife?

This is just some random thought I had for a long time , and I thought why not ramble about it At the only place it may mean something.

I think most people would say "yes, I'd like to know", when Kate offered to come clean about her crime to Jack in Tabula Rasa, S1e3. She was gonna tell him what she did, and The fact that he refused to know about it.. I always thought he was trying to create a better place and a new start for people. and I still think that, he did try to give people second chances.

But a sadder thought occurs to me, knowing that his past includes wanting to know about his ex wife's affair desperately. And getting so curious about the guy she left with, going beyond the Line and making big mistakes which hurt his ex wife, his father and himself. It is shown that he regrets things he has done in his past, in season 3 ep 1. But maybe he regretted them from the beginning.

And maybe that’s partially why he didn't want to learn about Kate’s crime. He actually wanted to know what she did, but then He wanted to challenge his curiosity, in order to make it better. He saw the mistakes he made with his ex wife and was trying to correct it at the last scene of Tabula Rasa…

This thought really got me on my latest rewatch, when I was going through a similar horrible break up. It's very self reflective watching this show and I always find myself more and more aware watching his relationships decay.

..And maybe Jack was aware of his mistakes too. I actually think he generally tried to correct his mistakes in very early season 1. He kinda tried to get along with Locke, better than with his father( i.e. episode 5)... and get along with Kate, better than with his ex wife... and then weeks later, get along with Juliet, better than with Achara lmao (just kidding, but what if..? ) . Well..I think he tried , but he made mistakes again and suffered harder.

And that’s the worst tragedy for me, when you know the mistakes you made, and you try to make it better at first, but you end up making the same mistakes again anyway. The old patterns keep returning, not necessarily because you haven't understood them, but because understanding them doesn't magically remove the fear, guilt, insecurity, and desperation that created them. That’s life. R.i.p. Jack.

I am doing a rewatch of Veronica Mars for the first time since I watched LOST for the first time two years ago. At the end of an episode of VM that aired in January 2006, I spotted the numbers on this fortune! My mind is blown.

Discussion Which is the lowest point in the series: the cages (season 3) or the temple (season 6)?

I have been reading this subreddit for weeks and it seems to me that the cages in season 3 and the temple in season 6 are considered by many as low (or the lowest) points in the series.

Do you agree that they are the lowest points? If so, which of the two parts is worst and why? If you don't consider those two runs of episodes the worse, which part of the series you consider to be inferior to those two parts?

Is there an episode where no one gets a concussion?

I'm on a rewatch and it feels like in every single episode someone gets hit on the head and is knocked out. In real life a head injury is very serious, but not on The Island I guess. So I need to know, is there actually a single episode where no one was at risk of getting a concussion?

Man, Desmond and jack’s story was something else. They weren’t even that close at first but somehow their paths kept crossing until they became such an important part of each other’s journey.

After everything they went through seeing Desmond help Jack remember at the end just hits hard. And then Jack finally sees everyone again, after all those years, all the suffering and everything they lost. Such a beautiful and bittersweet goodbye...

What’s your favorite quote from LOST? And I’m not talking “we have to go back.” or “live together die alone.” I’m talking the quotes you still think about. About love, about loss, about heartbreak. What’s your favorite?

SEASON 6 Lost Finale

I just finished rewatching Lost for the first time and oml I forgot how incredible the show is. Just the way the show weaves misery/despair with hope/optimism I think is done incredibly well.

Anyways, idk what the common consensus is about the ending of Lost, but I really enjoyed it. I thought it was beautiful how this show can get pretty dark at times but the ending is just so wholesome and feel-good.

I first watched the show when I was like 10 or something and this wasn’t when it was first airing. I don’t really remember how I felt about the show when I first watched it and I think I mostly remember being confused :/ but as I was rewatching it, all the subtle foreshadowing they would brought back a lot of memories of the show. I think the way the story is written is done extremely well and I have nothing but good things to say about Lost thanks to recency bias. I just wish there were more show left…

I crocheted this a while ago after I finished my 2nd watch through. I know the word is off center but I knew if I kept redoing it, it would get worse and I wouldn't be happy with it. So I let it be, but I still love it anyway.

SEASON 6 Series finale questions

Is the light at the core of the island related to the light that fills the church when Christian opens the door?

If the cork at the light of the island is taken out and the island destroyed, is the realm of the flashsideways and wherever it is that the characters move on also destroyed? In other words, is the island protecting only this living reality or also the afterlife?

Hi! Does the US pyramid edition of Lost: The Complete Collection include Spanish audio? Specifically, does it have the Latin American Spanish dub?

I'd really appreciate it if someone who owns this edition could confirm. Thanks!

FIRST TIME WATCHER Just finished season 1 for the first time

This show feels like what I assume crack feels like. We are firing on all cylinders at all times. How is there so much stuff happening. I love John Locke and Walt and Vincent and Hurley. If lost was made today the 1st season would end with shooting the polar bear. My biggest high of the season was the Hurley cameo on the news and just the whole john locke episode at the beginning. I also started making fun of what I call the extras (the 30 other plane crash people) and then they became self aware which was insane! My lowest is the jack/kate/sawyer threesome, just have sex with each other and stop making it everyone's problem! I think the numbers correspond with the characters. John got injured 4 years ago, sawyer lost his parents when he was 8, etc. Why are we not exploring the island at all? Why are we keeping so many secrets? Why does season 1 end in the middle of this crazy night? I cannot believe people had to wait for season 2.

Edited to add: What is the best season??

I have avoided spoilers so please no spoilers other than i know maybe theyre all dead the whole time but that might not even be the "correct interpretation"

Too many shows nowadays are not written well in the end or are canceled too soon so I am so scared its going to get bad lol. I keep telling myself it is a completed show many people love
