Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

School Bus PSA

We've been seeing more and more posts about school bus tickets in recent months. With schools starting up again I suspect we will begin to see even more questions. If you have questions regarding school bus tickets, please keep them limited to this megethread as we will be removing all posts moving forward.

Some information regarding the laws and some general guidance regarding school bus stop signs:
  • If a school bus has it's stop arm out on the same road as you, you must stop regardless of which side you are. This applies to two lane (1 lane each way) multi lane roads and divided roadways (e.g. Broadhollow road, William Floyd Parkway1, etc). If the stop arm is out before you pass the bus, expect a ticket.

  • If you are driving perpendicular to another road that a bus is stopped on (i.e. they are at or near a stop sign on a road you are crossing), you are not required to stop. Proceed with caution and be aware of any children that may be crossing the road to get to the bus.

  • If they are on a side road, school lot or driveway adjacent to the roadway, you do not need to stop. Proceed with caution.

  • Flashing yellow lights do not mean stop; they mean to proceed with caution and to be prepared to stop. If you see flashing yellow lights, slow down and anticipate the stop sign being deployed. Sometimes a bus is waiting for students to pickup and may sit with flashing yellow lights for a number of minutes, so do not stop and block traffic if the stop sign is not out.

Information pertaining to school bus enforcement can be found on the Suffolk County page here, and the Nassau County webpage here.

1 Note: There was some debate about this a few years ago. It is still a law, but there was a question regarding Suffolk County enforcement of the law.

I was at the noted Woodbury spot on 10/6, with my premature infant….not on 10/8, but I am really angry. What kind of unvaccinated POS is going around spreading this in doctors offices?

Be safe everyone

This sweet girl showed up on our front step tonight in Mineola (near the hospital) she seems to be a little on the older side as it appears there were signs of arthritis in her hind legs

We called 311 and they took her to VCA animal hospital in Westbury (behind BJ’s and regal cinema) the cops called us back to let us know she was chipped and in good hands. Leaving this picture of the owner happens to be on here
We had to give her a quick bath cause she had a lot of feces caked onto her feet. She was such a sweetheart and didn’t want to leave when the police came

Does anyone have any idea what will become of this facility? I believe it’s owned by LIPA and is completely decommissioned as a nuclear power plant. It’s still horrifying. Can we at least slap a little non toxic paint on this partially abandoned monstrosity of a structure?

Does anyone remember the metal band Eye Color Orange from Long Island? They released their album Vertabration in 2003 and released another CD. I've talked to the band members of the band and they don't have any CDs left from back then. I'm searching for any CDs left from them. Did anyone here have a copy? I can't find any online and I'd love to archive their work. Thank you. Anything is appreciated.

LIE road work left vertical lip that took my suspension out

Anyone else encounter a GIANT bump getting off Exit 33 on the LIE westbound Thursday evening? It looks like the repaving crew that was doing the exit lane left a large vertical lip between the new pavement and old pavement on the north service road. I hit it going 28 mph and it took my rear suspension out. (added a video: note: video is sped up a bit)

2027/2028 Bride: Advice on How to spend 25k or less

Hi everyone!

I am a 2027/2028 bride, looking for advice on whether anyone on Long Island was ACTUALLY ABLE to have a wedding here that was under 25k? I know it seems impossible; I am still holding onto hope lol. Any advice I will take, even if it's weird or outlandish; I'll take anything!!!

I say 2027/2028 as my fiancé and I aren't rushing into anything because of pricing. We want to be smart and really think about everything. We are considering just eloping and having a small celebration dinner instead, but I know in my heart I do want some sort of wedding celebration, even if we don't do a ceremony- just a reception!!

Right now, my fiancé and I love View Oakdale, as it would be in our budget, and they pretty much include everything besides videography within their pricing package. If anyone knows any venues similar to View, please let me know as well.

I feel that talking to people and getting real suggestions has been better than online research. I feel like all the venues recommended to me online start at 40k, which I am not doing LOL.

Thank you all so much, and good luck to any other upcoming brides out there !! <3

Edit: for context, our guest list would be approximately 120, I am willing to downsize!!

Update: Everyone is so helpful and sweet, thank you :))

Looking For Beaches that are Open at Night?

Are there any beaches or small beach-like areas that are open at night and are okay with dogs? My dog loves people but was attacked twice by loose dogs in our neighborhood. She's become dog reactive, and it's become increasingly difficult to find low stimulation places with little to no dogs during the day, and everything is closed during the night. She really likes the beach, and so do I. I take her for strolls.in the evenings sometime at beaches, but they generally close between sundown and 10 pm, and I'm very much a night owl. I just want to go someplace she and I can enjoy together and stay out later into the evening/into the very early morning.

Boxing

Any boxing gyms/clubs in Nassau county that have open gym hours after 5pm to use their bags/equipment independently? From what I’ve seen the clubs that have classes won’t let you use the bags during that time.

I like Westbury boxing club but not sure if the gym is for those training to fight only.

Times and spots for Trick or Treating In/Near Garden City

Hi Everyone,

I have a 1year old and a 3 year old and it will be Our First Trick or Treat Officially Together. I live in Franklin Square and I am looking for a good location to Trick or Treat Safe around the Garden City Area around 6pm Saturday October 31st. I like the Garden City Area as it has large Sidewalks and They are evenly paved and Easily Maneuvered on with a Stroller. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to park and which streets are the best? Last year I took my 3 year old and there was quite a bit of walking in between houses as a very low percentage of houses participate based on last year’s observation along with the complaints coming from my boots 😂

Family with young kids looking for Trick or Treat Recommendations In/Near Garden City around 6pm

Thank you for the help!

any fun thanksgiving Ideas for a young family on or around LI?

We're really not feeling the usual family get together this year. We were thinking of heading to Hershey, great wolf lodge, Kalahari or something like that but it's a hike for an overnight trip. We only have off Thursday so it would be wed night - thur night. Any creative ideas for a family with young kids? Something where we don't have to cook and entertain.

Kitten vet/clinic recommendations that are open on weekends please! :) Just rescued a little 7 week old kitten and want to get him checked out asap

Hi everyone! We recently took in a 7-week-old kitten from a neighbor who had been caring for a litter and finding homes for them. He was the last kitten left, and we ended up taking him in! He's super playful, friendly, and already seems pretty well-socialized.

Our neighbor told us that he was only seen by a vet when he was first born and hasn't received any vaccinations or other veterinary care since. He did mention that both the mom and dad cats are healthy and vaccinated, but we obviously still want to get him checked out ASAP.

We're looking for an affordable, trustworthy vet around Lake Grove/Suffolk County for a general checkup, first vaccines, deworming, and whatever else a kitten his age would need. We also plan to get him neutered once he's old enough.

Our main concern is finding somewhere that's transparent about pricing and won't push unnecessary tests or procedures. A few years ago, my sister rescued a perfectly healthy 6-week-old kitten off the street, and the vet ended up running practically every test possible without discussing the costs beforehand. The final bill was around $1,300, despite the kitten showing no signs of any health issues. We're obviously willing to pay for whatever our kitten needs, but would really like to avoid another experience like that.

We've heard about the vet clinics at local pet stores and Tractor Supply that offer vaccines and basic checkups, and were considering going to one this weekend. However, we'd prefer to establish care with an actual veterinary office if there's a reasonably priced one nearby that's open on weekends.

Does anyone have recommendations for vets in the area, especially ones that offer kitten packages for initial vaccines, exams, deworming, etc.? We'd also really appreciate hearing what you paid for your kitten's first visit!

Not necessarily looking for the absolute cheapest option, just somewhere honest, reasonably priced, and upfront about costs. Thank you!!

Recommendation Thoughts on Patchogue/Medford area? Looking to buy our first home!

My husband grew up in Hicksville and I grew up in Plainview, so we’re both pretty familiar with Nassau County, but not so much Suffolk.

We’re currently renting from my parents and are starting to look into buying our first home, whether that’s a condo or a house. We have a young daughter, so finding a nice, family-friendly area with good schools is really important to us.

We’ve been looking into the Patchogue/Medford area since it seems to be a little more affordable but I honestly don’t know much about it.

For anyone familiar with the area, what are your thoughts? How are the neighborhoods, schools, overall safety, etc.? Are there certain parts you’d recommend over others?

We’re also open to suggestions for other nice, family-friendly towns in Suffolk that are somewhat affordable. We’d ideally like to stay on Long Island and not move too far east since most of our friends and family are in Nassau.

Would love to hear some honest opinions from people who actually live in these areas or know them well. Thanks!!

Looking For Good barber for women with buzzcuts in Nassau?

Technically not a woman but I'm closeted so looking for a barber good for a woman. Women's salons plain don't do a good buzzcut, and men's barbers (even female ones) have given me no end of grief, often with the barber trying to talk me out of going that short because they don't believe a woman would really want a #0.5 buzz, giving me a higher number buzz than I asked for, occasionally I've even gotten sexual harassment. I'm sick of it!

Anyone know a barber who will just give me a buzzcut?

Jojo Potatoes

Is there anywhere on Long Island that sells GOOD JoJo Potato Wedges?

I feel in my youth they were in most grocery stores in the "hot window" but either haven't seen them recently or if they do have them they look pitiful.

Where's your go to place?

Is it dangerous to drink tap water in hicksville?

Hi I live in hicksville about 4 years now

I have water filter for the drinking water but we cook with tap water and I thought that was ok

But yesterday my doctor asked where I live (just annual visit)

I told her hicksville and she said don't drink tap water it is dangerous..

Now I am panicking.. I googled the plume and looks like our house is within the range...

Edit** our house is not included in the map but right off**

Should I go for water filter for the whole house? get water tested first?
