False. My circle of antediluvians has 3 women who rock linux on their desktops. 2 Genxers, 1 millennial. Also in the circle are women who work have worked in systems now for decades.
Back in the 90s there were women active in the IRC chats #hack and #phreak who were doing shit with the rest of us and not just "the girls who hang out with us"... Going further back to the commodore BBS days... there local girls who phreaked.
The hack/phreak circles of the era judge people based on their skillz. "She's a girl." kinda shit didnt really fly. That shit started to bubble up when the lame xmas/summer children started to come online via AOL and prodigy.

Well boys are mostly gooners with anime wallpapers (sometimes even minor anime characters (yes yes in the plot she's 5000 years old)), while men just use a normal desktop with a normal wallpaper and use their pc to work.

It's absolutely the truth.
I know 3 women who use linux as their primary desktop, one of them is/was an actual hacker, like back in the 90s #hack/#phreak who was involved in random shit. Her desktop used to just be random junk... In her older age it's her and her husband. I make fun of her for it. The other 2 random backgrounds of shit... Never anything pink or girlie.
2 of the guys I know who run linux as their desktops have anime girls on their desktops. One of them ran Hanna Montana for way longer than the joke was funny. Neither of those guys are embarrassed about their desktops, and will shut you down with the "you are a lame gate keeping mother fucker. I like to like things".
The meme itself is just kinda stupid and not grounded in what anyone sees in reality.
Shit, i dont even see women/girls customizing their windows desktops with girlie themes. The kids in my charge over the years would theme shit with boy bands, nature, pictures of themselves or their friends. Adult women having their pets as backgrounds is also common.
It's always dudes with the anime girls. And no shame in that... I mean we like girls, we like looking at girls, and anime girls are cute. I dont have any in my misc backgrounds... but there are some cool as powerpuff girl backgrounds there.

I have this kind of anime background (not anime girl wp, but still an anime) on my laptop that i use for working, i never felt embarassed, i mean its not like i putting a porn or gore anime wallpaper, so nothing that looks graphics or uncomfortable, even if i need to share my screen on video call meeting, i just show the window part of the screen that i want to share, am i doing that cause im 'embarassed'? nope, its just there is no any reason to show full screen if i just doing presentation on one particular software or tab.
And even if its 'embarassing' or 'hard to see' by other people... so what? Its just a wallpaper, a jpeg you put on your homescreen. Thats it.

i have never seen a girl ricing linux yet. almost everyone i have seen, just put up with what they got when they bought. I even saw my female classmate buying a new pc because wifi button went away in her win11 laptop, she believed wifi module got damaged after the update.
