Esports Around this date 5 years ago, C9 qualified for Worlds quarterfinals after starting the tournament 0-3
C9 was placed in the group of death with the tournament favorites in FPX and LCK #1 Damwon, and they started the first day of groups going 0-3.
C9 proceeded to beat the tournament favorites FPX, and beat RGE from EU twice to get out of groups.
Shoutout to that roster: Fudge, Blaber, Perkz, Zven, Vulcan

It’s time to bring back Sneaky and Meteos for some no nonsense coaching and analytics.

Sneaky is into something very different at this point in time.

Maybe it only works if he shows up in a role he hasn't played for c9 yet so options are adc or top lmao

I miss 2018 C9. Licorice, Jensen and Sneaky man. What an era. Going to Semis. When NA would suck but C9 was always clutch. What a fall off since the Perkz era. Thats when we got cursed

It’s time to get rid of blaber he’s the common dominator

This take would make a lot more sense if there was anyone actually better than him to replace him with. They have, bafflingly, two Korean sololaners taking up import slots. Blaber beats up literally every other jungler in the league with regularity besides Inspired and Josedeodo. Even just yesterday he outperformed Yike in 4 out of 5 games.

u/reservoir_hog_ 3h ago
it would make a lot more sense if he was even close to the reason they lost. He had a couple ints but nothing compared to the past. Legit got turns taken in who was inting between loki thanatos and tactical with a few from blaber

I admit I don't watch a lot of LCS, but "except Inspired and Josedeodo implies that Jose has had high stocks way before this TL roster? I've always liked him as a player but I haven't really seen him mentioned much before now.
My point being, currently, there might be junglers that are flying under the radar that could possibly be better than him, but C9 prefers to work with a known quantity than take a gamble. Similar to FNC in a way.
I'm not saying it's the wrong decision, I'm just a scrub emerald player, I can't GM. But I'm not going to act surprised if the known quanitity plays to his known level either. If C9 is to regain that fight in them, it would have to come from the team around him, not Blaber imo.

It’s more about its time for a fresh start and something new. Take a chance on something, we’ve seen the repeated ceiling of a blaber led roster. It’s like the Celtics giving up Jaylen brown it doesn’t make sense, but sometimes changes have to be made.

Give other junglers the same players and let see how he looks then. Jungle is the easiest role in pro and heavily influenced by the quality of the players around you.

That tiebreaker game vs Rogue was truly meme. Entire game was neck-and-neck and it was going to be decided by an Elder fight. Larssen 5-man realm warped Rogue into the middle of C9 just to get shredded, with Perkz styling on them as LeBlanc as usual.

The group stage format has been a huge career booster for players and teams that would have achieved nothing under the format used in recent years; this is the single biggest change to have affected Western teams, though the decline in player skill levels and the shrinking player base are also significant factors.

u/Jon_ofAllTrades 3h ago
This is just demonstrably false. It is objectively easier to make top 8 in the Swiss format than the old groups format. With 4 LPL/LCK seeds, you had to place above one of them to make top 8 with the old groups format. Now, you can advance out of Swiss without ever beating an LPL/LCK team.

But it wasn’t until more recently that you had to get a LCK and LPL team in your group. Many years there was one if not more groups with a LMS, VN, EU/NA and only one of LPL/LCK team. Many players and orgs benefited from groups of life.
Edit: grammar
21
u/Madison_369 3h ago
Quite the opposite. The swiss format in recent years were made because Swiss has a better chance of letting teams with easy draws to get out: we see very often how the final swiss rounds have NA vs NA to get out.
In the old groups format, you legitimately have to outperform an LCK or LPL team to finish top 2. No going around that.

Never forget 100t 2021, won LCS and got 1st seed, then drew into EDG who won that year, T1, and a no name PCS team that went 0-6 and couldn’t play spoiler for them.

2023: NRG 2-0 G2
2024: FLY 2-1 TL
2025: G2 2-1
While you try to reduce it to NA and pretend EU don't get a benefit of it, the reality it's getting a pass thanks to getting an EU or NA draw.
Both formats have their own advantages. Bo1s are volatile and anyone can win. Even a one-shot pick can win you that, like in 2021, one of the LCK teams played Shen supp and it worked well, but it wasn't used again, because it was used for a specific case.
It's similar in Bo5s, if you hear comms, some talk about testing comps. Like DK picked Xerath (surprise pick) to counter Orianna in the 2021 MSI Final Vs RNG. It was situational. In a series you can adapt to it, in a Bo1, you can't.

I remember someone saying that the reason TSM never made it out of groups 2015 onwards was because, as the #1 NA seed, they didn't have a #1 KR or CN team beating up everyone else to take advantage of and instead they had a #3 KR team beating up everyone else + EU or CN 2/3. Seeing as they lost when they had MSF and FW as fillers I doubt they placed much thought in their comment

I don’t know; I think not knowing the teams you’re facing in advance is more of a disadvantage in terms of preparation than anything else. Besides, counting on EU and NA teams to actually cross paths when both are sitting at a 2-2 record—well, I’d call that an "alignment of the planets" (sure, it happened more than once, but in the end, it’s not like more than one team actually makes it through, right?).
5
u/Madison_369 2h ago
Calling it an “alignment of the planets” is not true when we actual have simulations and statisticians showing otherwise with this format in all different types of sports.
Some examples I found:
A 2023 Reddit post with 10 million simulations found a 64.5% chance that at least one NA/EU team qualifies without beating any LCK/LPL team, even assuming Eastern teams always win.
Another 2024 simulation found a 53–65% chance under different assumptions.
And that’s exactly what happened with NRG in 2023 and FLY in 2024. G2 also qualified by beating FLY in 2025.
These aren’t huge coincidences. They’re fairly likely outcomes of the Swiss format.
It’s pretty agreed upon that the Swiss format statistically favors weaker teams and puts a bigger weight on luck. You’re the first person who’s even thinking otherwise.

I hated zven but zven is 69x the player tactical is.

u/Nickhoova 3h ago
There was a reason tactical replaced zven lol he definitely played poorly today and had some questionable moments in the KC series. But zven was completely lifeless since coming back to ADC

u/polikuji09 3h ago
Was* there's a reason that Dom (who was always critical of tactical) subbed tactical in. With Zven in the form he was showing C9 just don't make worlds (which tbf would likely be less embarrassing than this)

u/Zodlax xPekeGoatRipOGFuckAstralis 1h ago
It's not the first time a veteran has looked a bit iffy during the year. You know they will get in form when it matters. Look at last year spring finals. He was the best player in the server the 5 games, better than Inspired. You gotta have trust in your players, more so when they have like what, 8 domestic titles?
I will never understand how they are so naive to sub in a player like Tactical that after playing with CoreJJ he cannot become a top player of is own.
Even if there was a 'reason' to bench him it was complete int.
We know they were looking for a Blaber replacement as well, that should've been their direction.
