Reminder that you don’t need to do Everything to have cleaner clothes.

I found this sub this summer. I switched from Charlies Soap to Tide, adjusted the amount for trace suds, added citric acid instead of vinegar to the rinse (sometimes) and then kept doing my laundry like usual.

Clothes got cleaner, wash by wash. No overnight miracles but definitely improvements.

Now its cooling off and I’m getting out the warmer clothes and bedding that hasn’t gotten any Tide washes and oh my goodness some of these things have a long way to go.

The regular wash cycles will catch them up, but I am tempted to do a spa day on some of it for a quick fix.

First Time Using The “Laundry Stripping” Method Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
69 Upvotes

***Edit: Spoiler Alert: Soup photos at the end!***

I’m going to preface this by saying I am by no means a laundry expert, I just wanted to try the laundry stripping method. I will also add that there was a yellow, orange, and baby blue towel in this mix with white, tan and beige-ish coloured towels, which could explain the greenish colour. I currently have them in the washing machine (with no detergent or laundry softener). I’m excited to see how they feel out of the dryer!

I used this recipe from GoCleanCo minus the Calgon water softener because I couldn’t find it lol:

NEED:
- 2 cups (or use the scoop that comes in the box) of Tide® Powdered Laundry Detergent
- ¼ cup of Borax® Laundry Detergent and Booster
- ¼ cup Arm & Hammer® So Clean Super Washing Soda
- ¼ cup Calgon® Water Liquid Softener

HOW TO TACKLE:

- Fill a bathtub half full with water - as hot as possible!
NOTE: More clothes - more water in the tub.
- Add CLEAN sorted, like-colored clothes or bedding
- Add in the mixture: stir until it dissolves
- Let soak for 4 hours
- Stir once every hour
- Drain the tub and wring clothes out. Transport to the washing machine (use a bucket so you don't drip everywhere!)
- Run a full cycle - DO NOT add soap or fabric softener (there is already plenty of soap in the clothes)

First photo: After stirring the first hour
Second photo: Second hour
Third photo: Third hour
Fourth photo: Right before I took the towels out
Fifth photo: The after with no overhead light

Why is Tide supposedly better than All or Purex?

I have tried all 3 of these brands' free and clear type detergents and I can't really tell the difference. I usually use cold water. Usually it's fine but none of them get the stink out of my towels.

Washer full of black mold, landlord hesitant to replace machine

Hi everyone,
My wife and I just moved into a new house, and as part of the lease, the washer and dryer were considered to be “gifts” that we are responsible for should any repairs come up. Well, we discovered loads of black mold not only all over the door seal, but inside of the detergent slot. Our property management maintenance guy is hesitating because the machines belong to the house owner, but per our lease, we should just be able to toss those duds and bring in whatever machines we desire.
The reason he is hesitant is mostly due to the lack of a spot to store them. But this seems like a safety issue and not really an option for us to not have working laundry. My whole point of all of this is to ask, is there a simple way to clean out the machine from all of this neglect? Is it even worth the time to try and clean it out? It’s pretty gross and hoping to either fix this ourselves or just push even harder on replacing them. Any help would be great, thank you!

Liquid detergent I don't like

Is it poor form to leave some laundry detergent I don't like at the laundromat for someone who may want/need it?

Which liquid to use?

I am using all free and clear. I know I know - bad choice. I switched to that a few years back after having an allergic reaction to tide post covid. I had never had an issue before. I'm willing to try Tide again. I suspect it was a temporary thing.

I have a front load. I'm am currently using the downy rinse and refresh. I like it. I have the FEBU stuff in my Amazon cart. I went to the Lipase spreadsheet and there isn't a tide liquid on there. So I assume if I use a liquid I need to use the FEBU? What's the best liquid to use in my situation? As another poster mentioned, I'm just doing a switch without a spa day. Just going to keep on washing and see where I end up. Thanks so much!

I live in Ottawa, Canada and was looking for Compliments detergent at Freshco (the one from the lipase detergent google sheet). This is the bottle I found and wanted to ask if it’s the same one as described in the list. Thanks

Help! Moths?

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

For a while now, we’ve been finding these holes in both T-shirts and sheets… it looks like a hole with a scorched edge around it. It happens rarely and mostly with the sheets, but it ruins our clothes 😔

What could it be? I checked the washing machine and don’t think anything is caught in it.

Could they be moths? It seems strange to me, though, that there are those “yellow” spots and that the holes also have that scorched look… plus, so far I’ve only seen them in the sheets, which are the only items we wash periodically at 60 degrees…

Help with pen marks on cotton/rayon fabric

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I bought this jacket several months ago and I just took it out to put it in my tiny closet for fall and I noticed that it has what looks like pen marks inside a pocket. The jacket is brand new with tags bought online from Nordstrom Rack and I didn’t notice these marks before but they must’ve been there because I just tried it on once and put it back in it’s poly package for storing until now.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with getting these type of marks out of clothing? The fabric is 50% cotton 50% rayon.

I’m not very experienced with getting stains out but I’ve had some success with instructions from this sub so I thought to ask before I try anything myself.

Need help with a bleach spot on brand new clothing

Post image
• Upvotes

I ordered 2 hoodies from C&A's website since neither the color or size was available in the store. A dark grey and a brown option. The former is perfect however the latter one has this rusty looking stain on the right sleeve.

I think it's bleach and I'm not sure if there's a way to remove it or if I should return it.

It sucks because if I choose to return it I'll have to pay for the return shipping, and they don't directly replace the item either, so I'll have to reorder it and I'm not sure if the singular item would allow free shipping for a new order.

All in all, is there a way to fix this? Is it even really bleach?

Does liquid detergent go bad?

Does liquid laundry detergent go bad, or get weaker as it ages? I typically buy either original Tide (orange jug) or some random variety of liquid Persil. I know that enzymes in detergent are good, but do they get weaker over time? Through a combination of good sales, coupons, overbuying, and a disorganized laundry room, I found a few unopened jugs that I bought back in 2021 to 2024.

Help me decipher a label?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Morning folks,

Long time lurker, first time poster!

I’m getting a bit confused here!

I’ve this blanket that belonged to my grandparents. I spilt some tea on it last night as well as the cat throwing up on it, so it needs a good clean. Never thought this’d be an issue as I knew it had this label on so yay fine to wash.

However. Now I’m looking at it and it’s not as straight forward as it appears?

I thought the 40o in the first symbol meant max. temperature, but the writing would indicate it’s the minimum temperature? (I mean I can just wash on 40 to be safe so no real issue there..?) but what does the 6 above the water in the max/min temperature mean?

I’ve tried using Google lens and no luck 😔

EDIT: Thank you all, it has survived being washed 😄

yellow stains from storage in closet

hi everyone,

long time lurker, first time poster. curious if anyone is familiar with how to get rid of these stains (if at all)

I found this at the back of my closet and haven’t worn it for more than a decade, so I’m pretty sure it’s not body oils.

I am also located in a very humid country if there is a possibility it could be mold?

TIA!

Our well water used to be very good. Now it has so much iron that washing anything white turns it light tan. Can anyone tell me how to deal with this?

Clean machine without filter?

• Upvotes

Hi all,

We have an Amana front loader washing machine without a filter that’s a couple years old. Both myself & the previous user of this machine have a lot of very hairy pets. We use the Active branch washing machine tablets every month on a hot clean cycle and sometimes throw in two at a time.

I’m not convinced our machine is really clean though. Does anyone have tips / insight into where all the hair is going and how to clean this properly?

Is Seventh Generation really worse than Tide?

• Upvotes

Tide Free & Gentle (American), for comparisons sake. Maybe Tide Ultra Sport or Tide Ultra Odor + Oxi.

I tried searching 7th Generation on this sub. The few threads I found on it call it "meh". Not terrible, but not the worse.

I know a lot of people recommend Tide powders, but only normal Tide powder (not sensitive friendly) is in my area. Roma, Blanca Nieves, and Foca powders exist but probably aren't ideal.

Can't get out oil/grease stain

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello to my favorite place on the internet.

I discovered this subreddit a few months ago and my life has been changed for the better. I am using the German powdered Persil (both Universal and Colored) and some liquid Persil and laundry life is so good. I even had some family bring me three bags of the new FEBU with DNase (I am an expat living abroad) and laundry life is just SO GOOD.

However, I have been met with a stain that I can't get out. We have an Uppababy stroller and my husband was folding it to put in our car and got oil on his sleeve from the stroller. I've tried rubbing the liquid Persil on it, but can't get it out. Any advice for this type of stain?

Black clothes always get residue on them

Post image
1 Upvotes

I live in an apartment building and share two washers with roughly 10 other apartments, no matter what I do and how I change things I always get this residue that shows up on black clothes and makes them look dirty after putting them in the wash. We just got a brand new washing machine a week ago, and even still this machine is doing it. I’ve tried different detergent, less detergent, doing a clean cycle before putting in my black load, smaller loads, turning clothes inside out, running two loads of colours before putting my black load in, nothing helps. I do not use fabric softener, but I know that other people in the building do is that all it is? Is there no hope?

Is there an aluminium free deodorant that doesn’t cause odor rebloom?

I have been going through my clothes, have now switched to Tide clean + gentle after my first attempt at switching to a lipase containing detergent caused the worst stinky mess in my clothes! I am pretty happy with how things are coming from the laundry except for my shirt 🙈 the butyric acid smell is strong. I generally does go away after a second wash, but who has time to be washing everything twice? (+it gets pretty expensive). I have seen people on this sub talk about how Native deodorant causes the re-bloom, I don’t use native but I do use an aluminium free deodorant. The smell is strongest on the arm pits of the shirts, so it must be coming from the deodorant. Is there an alternative that does keeping having to wash my shirts twice?
thanks!

Please help me! I accidentally washed and dried my clothes with the Vaseline tinted tube lip balm, and now have tinted stains of chapstick all over my clothes. How can I get this out? I’ve tried rubbing alcohol and dish soap so far, with no avail. Please let me know how I can remove the stains from my light and dark clothes.
