Please help me! I accidentally washed and dried my clothes with the Vaseline tinted tube lip balm, and now have tinted stains of chapstick all over my clothes. How can I get this out? I’ve tried rubbing alcohol and dish soap so far, with no avail. Please let me know how I can remove the stains from my light and dark clothes.

Halp - Seam wrinkles/shrinkage in clothing

• Upvotes

Does anyone know how to fix clothes shrinking along seams/getting wrinkly?

I've been able to significantly improve the results after steaming but that is a LOT of effort and some of the stuff is still quite coarse. I have a loose knit cotton sweater that is very stiff (holds its shape, can be stretched but then remains stretched) and just weird now.

I'm using GearGuard, Calgon capsule's, and Steamery Delicate/etc. detergent's in a front load LE washer and dryer.

I have a lot of vintage clothing that I need to clean well....I assumed that was the problem

However, one of my brand new purchased pants that have survived multiple washings, have now shrunk. The elastic band has contracted severely, and same seems to go for any thread/stitching which in turn wrinkles seams/'shrinks' the pant. The actual fabric seems fine......

I'm lost how to restore any of these or how to avoid this in the future. Maybe stop using calgon? It definitely helps detergent clean up etc. (I have high ppm water)

I don't even know how to begin resolving this and most of the internet seems to be copy pasted AI stuff.

yellow stains from storage in closet

hi everyone,

long time lurker, first time poster. curious if anyone is familiar with how to get rid of these stains (if at all)

I found this at the back of my closet and haven’t worn it for more than a decade, so I’m pretty sure it’s not body oils.

I am also located in a very humid country if there is a possibility it could be mold?

TIA!

Purchased a new jacket, has a very strong industrial smell to it. How to remove it?

• Upvotes

I recently picked up a new Carhartt OG Detroit Jacket, a washed blue colour. When I opened the parcel up, I was hit with a strong industrial smell, a bit like a glue or chemical type of smell. I've tried leaving it outside a few days but that hasn't worked. Just tried soaking it in baking soda for 8 hours but the smell is still there. I'm trying to do a wash of it with vinegar to see if that works. Any ideas on how I could remove that smell?

Spilled a comical amount of curry sauce on a cotton crewneck sweater that i wear as loungewear and it still has a faint smell to it after 2 washes. Will it ever go away, and will it transfer onto other clothing when washed and dried together?

So i recently somehow leaned over onto a bowl of curry rice and the sweater I was wearing got absolutely smeared in the stuff on one side. I instantly thought about throwing the sweater out since it didn't seem worth the effort, but I did end up rinsing the sweater in the sink immediately and then wrung it out. I then proceeded to throw it into the washer by itself on cold (just my preference) with a lot of detergent. It came out of the washer smelling fine, so i dried it. When it came out of the dryer I still could smell traces of the sauce and wasn't satisfied, so i decided to wash it *again* with another load of laundry (same settings). When it came out of the dryer the second time around it smelled better but obviously the stains were still there which i didn't care about. Fast forward to today: I pulled the sweater out for the first time since the 2nd wash and wore it throughout the day. No smell detected.. at least at first. Out of curiosity, when looking in the mirror while coming out of the shower, I gave the stains a visual inspection. They were still there (again, don't care), however this prompted me to give the stains a sniff. It somehow still has a scent of the spilled sauce!! The rest of the sweater smells like detergent and my natural scent but, the stains, the stains had the persistent smell that I had forgotten about. SO, my question is: is the smell going to be there forever, embedded and infused into the cotton fibres of the sweater, or will it eventually just go away after a couple more wears and washes? AND, will washing it with other things transfer the smell onto them?

Thanks for your advice in advance!

Is there any hope?

My down comforter that I treasure for the most luxurious sleep while camping in the boat or RV got moisture that led to mold starting. Hubby found it while I was out of town, and ran it through the wash on super hot with oxy clean and then again with a laundry soap pod followed by drying on high heat with frequent fluffing/adjusting for total dryness. Yet, staining remains. I am so sad. Please help me salvage this.

  1. Suggestions to remove the staining?

  2. Is it likely that staining still means active mold spores or is it just unsightly and ignorable with a duvet cover?

Does liquid detergent go bad?

Does liquid laundry detergent go bad, or get weaker as it ages? I typically buy either original Tide (orange jug) or some random variety of liquid Persil. I know that enzymes in detergent are good, but do they get weaker over time? Through a combination of good sales, coupons, overbuying, and a disorganized laundry room, I found a few unopened jugs that I bought back in 2021 to 2024.

Nicotine damage on clothing

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all !!! Hope someone can help me please.

Ive just moved out of a house where i and others did smoke inside way to much. But thats in the past now and smoke outside in a new house.

The in built wardrobes had doors that where sort of open most of the time in some small way.

So now im in a new house and smoking outside so im going thru the washing from the wardrobe and some items are a little brown from nicotine.

Ive tried washing them and soaking them but it doesn't seem to want to come off the clothes. They are a little better but not great. So some tips for those would be helpful please.

But to my main important question: I have a pair of overalls that are super rare (Osh Kosh) They haven't made for 20+ yrs and would be the only pair in our country. They are the i think its called the railroad stripe type, but both sides of it are a light brown and look terrible now. So far ive tried soaking it with some vinegar and washing liquid, Dish washing liquid, soaking or a few days. And nothing is getting it off.. Should i just take it to a dry cleaners, can they fix it? Or what can i do to fix this please, These are super rare and dont want to just throw them out because they can never be replaced. Any tips thank you!! The photo doesnt look too bad but they look worse in person, the middle is fine just the sides are darker and yellow. Thanks for any tips.

Opinions on Arm & Hammer powder with OxiClean

I got a free box of Arm & Hammer powder and used it on my regular laundry (t-shirts, socks, underwear, nothing fancy). It works just as well as my Gain liquid as far as I can tell, so I'm considering making the switch. Is the OxiClean version actually better, or should I just stick with the base one?

Toddler Laundry Process (Stains)

There has to be an easier process than what I’m doing, and probably a process that actually works. When my toddler comes home from daycare her shirt is inevitably covered in some kind of food stain (usually red sauce or grease or something). She also likes the random snack of any type of cheesy chip or cracker and those orange-ish stains also everywhere.

I pre-treat by soaking in Dawn, I’ll move it to soak in oxi clean. Wash with tide free and gentle, with more oxi clean; on delicate cycle with warm water so I can activate “steam for stains”. You think the stains come out? NOPE.

I’ve tried the pre treatment sprays but wound up with shirts that got bleached (?) because I guess I left them it on too long. I’m trying to not do laundry everyday for a stained shirt.

And yes I send her in cheaper clothes to daycare most of the time but still would like it not to all covered in red/orange stains.

HELP. Show me a better way please.

Mildew Towels

My husband and I are on our second set of bath towels in the last 7 years. Is that normal? First set we would hang to dry behind the door in the bathroom or on a rack that hangs outside of our shower. They ended up with a mildew smell and I tried all the tricks and nothing helped so I threw them out. Bought new towels two years ago. We moved our hanging rack to literally right above our vent so I know air is aimed right at them. Also started to smell like mildew! I do shower at night, with the fan on, and we do end up closing the door because the light from the window in our bathroom is so bright so I know that doesn’t help. We just bought a dehumidifier hoping that helps some things. I’ve done a vinegar wash. We used Truly Free for awhile and even switched to Tide Free and Clear. Are these towels doomed too? Help.

Where does detergent go in my portable washing machine?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello,

I just got the Black and Decker 2.0 cubic feet portable washing machine. I am absolutely loving it so far. Only problem is I'm not sure if the detergent goes in the left or right side of the detergent tray. Also where do I add the Downy Rinse and Refresh (left side of tray, right side of tray, or directly in the drum) and can I add it at the very beginning of the cycle or do I wait and add it when the rinse cycle starts. I wish the instruction manual would have covered this stuff, but it doesn't unless I missed something.

First Time Using The “Laundry Stripping” Method Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
37 Upvotes

***Edit: Spoiler Alert: Soup photos at the end!***

I’m going to preface this by saying I am by no means a laundry expert, I just wanted to try the laundry stripping method. I will also add that there was a yellow, orange, and baby blue towel in this mix with white, tan and beige-ish coloured towels, which could explain the greenish colour. I currently have them in the washing machine (with no detergent or laundry softener). I’m excited to see how they feel out of the dryer!

I used this recipe from GoCleanCo minus the Calgon water softener because I couldn’t find it lol:

NEED:
- 2 cups (or use the scoop that comes in the box) of Tide® Powdered Laundry Detergent
- ¼ cup of Borax® Laundry Detergent and Booster
- ¼ cup Arm & Hammer® So Clean Super Washing Soda
- ¼ cup Calgon® Water Liquid Softener

HOW TO TACKLE:

- Fill a bathtub half full with water - as hot as possible!
NOTE: More clothes - more water in the tub.
- Add CLEAN sorted, like-colored clothes or bedding
- Add in the mixture: stir until it dissolves
- Let soak for 4 hours
- Stir once every hour
- Drain the tub and wring clothes out. Transport to the washing machine (use a bucket so you don't drip everywhere!)
- Run a full cycle - DO NOT add soap or fabric softener (there is already plenty of soap in the clothes)

First photo: After stirring the first hour
Second photo: Second hour
Third photo: Third hour
Fourth photo: Right before I took the towels out
Fifth photo: The after with no overhead light
Sixth photo: The after with overhead light

My clothes smell like my old house

Right out of the laundry, my clothes smell fine. But anytime I travel I can immediately smell the “old house smell” on them as soon as I open my suitcase.

My house is 105 years old and I haven’t been able to find a way to get rid of the smell, so now I’m hoping for some laundry tips to keep my clothes smelling fresh after I wash them. I tend to use scent free detergents and avoid fragrances, so I’m not using anything that would help mask the smell. Is that my only option? Are there other laundry things I can do to help? I’m paranoid about smelling like an old musty house and I think I’m so used to it that I don’t notice it on the day-to-day.

Toronto renters: how do you soften your laundry water?

Heard from City of Toronto staff that the city’s water supply is “medium” hardness. If you’re a renter you cannot install water softeners obviously. So what do you guys do to soften the water? Washing soda leaves a residue apparently. So what now?

Why is Tide supposedly better than All or Purex?

I have tried all 3 of these brands' free and clear type detergents and I can't really tell the difference. I usually use cold water. Usually it's fine but none of them get the stink out of my towels.

I’m obsessed with Downy Rinse Out in the Active Fresh Scent. That being said, I’m finding it harder and harder to to find in stores and online. Anyone know if they’re discontinuing it?

Down duvet?

I have a queen size down duvet that could really use a wash. Manufacturer says not to wash/dry at home, as duvet too large for residential machines and may not dry correctly, resulting in damage/mildew/etc. How are folks washing their down duvets?
