What to expect during recovery
Do not underestimate recovery, especially the first 3-4 days!!
When you initially wake up you'll be drugged to high hell. Nothing is really bad or good, it's a blur. When the drugs wear off things get bad. Very bad. Your nose swells shut so you'll be breathing through your mouth, which will be closed in its own way (bands or wires). Congestion will be common for a week or more. This makes breathing difficult and tedious. Take care to keep your teeth free of "gunk" you might accumulate from the dried bits of your liquid diet. The sludge can block the small spaces between your teeth making it more difficult to breath. The majority of your face from your eyes down will be very numb. This numbness will last for weeks in some places and months in others. There will be blood, and lots of it. Your mouth will be pouring out gallons of blood, and the rest will be flowing out your nose. The immense amount of blood from your mouth will stop within a few days, as will most of the blood from your nose, but nose bleeds will be quite common for longer. Vomiting up blood is pretty common. Remain calm and let it seep from between your teeth. If you followed surgery instruction and didn't consume anything before the surgery this shouldn't be a problem, though it can be unsettling. Hot and cold flashes may occur. Do what you can to make yourself comfortable. Expect a decreased appetite and slow digestive tract. I recommend drinking a bit of prune juice before you have your first bowel movement. Also expect low energy from your low appetite, your concoction of drugs (anesthesia and post-surgery pain killers), and very poor sleep. You will sleep poorly. You'll have general pain in your throat and jaw, but this is usually tolerable with painkillers. You'll have difficulty swallowing at first. This will get better progressively. What that means to each person is different. I was swallowing the morning after surgery, but my friend couldn't swallow for 5 days.
Items to have after surgery
Ice packs and a heating pad. Use ice packs the first couple of days (important) to reduce swelling and the heating pad to reduce bruising. *A blender and strainer. Sinus rinse (ask doctor before use). A neck pillow to help with sleeping upright. A jaw bra might make you more comfortable. Large syringes to help eat/drink. You'll be eating everything through a syringe for awhile, and refilling a small syringe 8 times to finish a small bowl of soup gets annoying. A heated humidifier. Cotton swabs to clean blood clots from nose. Cotton pads to clean your face. *A child's toothbrush. Your face will be stiff and painful. The smaller tooth brush lets you clean parts your larger toothbrush simply won't be able to reach. Ibuprofen/other painkiller. These should be provided for you after your surgery. Getting additional may be necessary. Vaseline for lips. Tissues for your general cleaning, which there will be plenty of. Oral care sponge swabs for cleaning teeth with chlorohexidine.

I can’t even read this subreddit anymore or give emotional support to people going through this without scrolling through the horde of perfectly developed, but body dysmorphic teenagers posting & asking for opinions on whether or not they need a major, risky and invasive jaw surgery.
It’s like a laughable joke. Going through this— 6 weeks of liquid diet, weeks of opioids and pain, permanent numbness, retraining practically all of the essential functions in your mouth area, years of swelling and years of mental anguish just at a CHANCE for better health-- to improve breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech, sleep apnea or the chance to eliminate future complete tooth decay. All of this- just to see someone treating this as if it’s a simple cosmetic procedure.
It hasn’t bothered me before but it seems to keep getting worse. I don’t know what’s causing it, or where people keep getting the idea that they need jaw surgery, but it is out of control. I would have 0 clue about this surgery had I not been told over and over and over again by every dentist, orthodontist and eventual surgeon I visited that I needed to get this done.
I know it’s too much to ask for a mod to just auto-delete these posts because they view it as a core part of the subreddit, but can we at least get a filter slapped on to it or something so we can filter it out? I come on here to find experiences I relate to- after having to go through this hellish process- or just to offer emotional support to people in the early days or answer good, reasonable questions. I think, though, that if i see one more perfectly developed, forward grown, perfect bite class I kid ask if they need a lefort 3 and 14 other surgeries I will just leave and never come back.

I’m 3 weeks post up. I thought my nose had changed, it seemed more symmetrical so I took a picture and compared it to before and WOW. This is insane. I had jaw surgery to correct a canted/slanted/assymetric jaw that was causing me jaw pain. But the aesthetic changes are wild.

Just got my insurance approved for braces, I get them on next week, then premolar extractions after that
The plan is double jaw surgery + genio + ccw + possible septoplasty, should be about a year decompensation
Going to be documenting my journey here

Biggest regret of my life, 3.5 years post op.
-Djs + genio, perfect bone fusion, no reaction to hardware
-Had ct scans checked by other surgeons who said the work looked great
Symptoms
-extreme tightness at the osteotomy sites 24/7
-extreme tightness/stiffness of all facial muscle groups, specifically the muscles that were transected to enter expose the jaw bone
-nerve throbbing 24/7
-parathesia/dysesthesia of entire face and lips
-extreme amount of intraoral scar tissue formation
-extremely stiff to move lips and speak/eat
This surgery has literally ruined my life, 24/7 I feel terrible discomfort. I regret nothing more in life than doing this surgery. My life was infinitely better before surgery even though it made me look better. fixed my bite and made me breath about 10% easier.

Double jaw surgery- LeFort 1, BSSO, genioglossus suspension, genioplasty, and septoplasty. *movements are in previous posts.
Surgery was on August 20th at Mayo in Rochester, MN.
I’m very happy with my results! All functional issues are fixed! Breathing is way easier and I’m less self conscious about my profile. I had my first post-op ortho appointment yesterday, and my ortho was really happy with my results and bite. Just a little tweaking to my molars and I get my braces removed in 6 months.
Went on vacation last week and I felt fine even though I’m still swollen and eating is still difficult since I have pain in molars and my mouth has a hard time chewing. Most of my residual swelling is near my nose and under chin and neck. Still numb on lower lip and chin.

I’m 10 months post-op DJS, and I still find myself worrying every time I eat. I constantly think about whether something might shift or move in my jaw, even though I’m already this far into recovery.
It’s exhausting to have these thoughts with every meal, and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing.
Has anyone else struggled with this kind of post-op anxiety? If so, were you able to overcome it, and what helped you the most? Did it get better with time, or was there something specific that helped you feel safe and trust your jaw again?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

I have a really heavy/wide and short lower face and I’m trying to figure out what route I can take to fix it. I think deep down it is mostly bone but I keep trying to convince myself it’s just due to buccal fat (though I am fairly skinny) and big masseter muscles because when I pull the skin on the sides of my jaw upwards it looks much more normal. Obviously I know the length isn’t caused by those factors but I mean at least the bulk. Would I for sure need full on jaw surgery to improve the look of my jaw, could a vertical genioplasty suffice + maybe weight loss and masseter Botox fix it? I don’t really have any functional issues other than TMJ and maybe a slight deep bite.
From the side I don’t look exactly recessed and a deep mentolabial fold or anything, I just have a very low gonial angle and my chin sort of “rotates up.” Though I have a long ramus so I’m a bit confused how my jaw can be so short. I will probably never be able to afford actual jaw surgery unless I can somehow get insurance to pay for it because of my tmj, so I’m hoping to find some other option. This is really affecting my self esteem and I really don’t think my jaw looked like this when I was younger so I would really like to do something cosmetically wise, using my phone’s back camera from a couple feet away makes it look so so terrible compared to selfies or how I look on a actual camera ): I will be going to a ortho soon to get their opinion and xrays and whatever else I need, so we will see.

-Class 2 Division 2 maloclusion
-Issues with nose breathing, needing several purposeful deep breaths via nose throughout the day.
-Lips do not cover teeth when sleeping, causing scars from dried saliva. I use a night mask now to help with this.
-Jaw asymmetry, especially pronounced when smiling.
-Speech getting affected overtime by teeth leaning in along right bottom jaw.
I've been looking into DJS but I'm a bit confused about my situation. My jaw is pronounced but seems weak. My teeth along the bottom right jaw are sort of leaning into my tongue. My chin is slanting to the right and my nasolabial fold is much tighter/restrictive on the left. Breathing isn't awful but I have to consciously take deep breaths or I feel I'm struggling for oxygen.
Would DJS help these issues, or should I be looking into different work entirely?

I have to choose between just braces or braces and jaw surgery. I have a 9mm overbite and very severe crowding. My teeth and jaw cause me pain, eating, breathing, and speech issues, plus my teeth look really bad, too. I need to have 4 teeth removed no matter what I choose aswell. when I had my consultation, the surgeon said something that's bugging me, though. He said if I choose surgery, they will have to make my teeth worse with the braces before they get better. He said i will be in braces about 18-24 months before surgery depending on how fast they can get my teeth into position, but he said basically he will have to position my teeth for a jaw I don't have yet. He said that doing this can make my speech a little worse, and I may not like the way I look in the meantime, which ( to me ) is something I'm willing to sacrifice for 2 years if it means I have the best results. Though im wondering if anyone's had something similar done to them pre surgery and if they could tell me what it was like for them. I'm curious to hear if it was really bad or worth it if that makes sense, haha. I have a month to decide, and I just wanna make sure I'm making the right decision. If any of yall have had to do something similar pls share your story it'll be greatly appreciated.

i know changing the jaws influence a bunch of facial ratios and its important to calculate every single one and look at your face together and not look at one piece in isolation. it is surprising how many people do this surgery without knowing about this stuff themselves.
while i am trying to look at my face as a whole, i dont know how to accurately predict what aesthetic changes it will make to your face since changing one part of the face affects how the whole entire face is perceived.
For example: an assymetric jaw gets centered, and a slightly crooked nose that used to “match” the asymmetry can suddenly stand out more
or shortening the lower face makes the forehead take up a bigger share of the face, so a high or receding hairline can look more noticeable after.
and of course there are also things that make other parts of the face look better
how would one accurately predict these things?

Hey everyone!
I’m going to undergo double jaw surgery, and while I’m obviously looking forward to the functional improvements, I’m also very interested in maximizing the aesthetic outcome.
Surgeons in my country tend to take a fairly conservative approach, so I’d like to be as informed and prepared as possible going into my pre-op consultation. I want to be able to advocate for myself and have an open discussion with my surgeon about achieving the best possible functional and aesthetic results.
I know it’s difficult to make accurate recommendations based on a single scan, but my main question is: how many millimeters of advancement do you think would be ideal in my case? Specifically, I’m curious about the amount of advancement of both the maxilla and the mandible, and whether a more substantial advancement might be worth discussing with my surgeon from an aesthetic standpoint.
For context, my current surgical plan includes double jaw surgery, a genioplasty, and a segmented Le Fort I osteotomy. My understanding is that the surgical plan will also include movements to address my short face syndrome.
I’d really appreciate your input on how many millimeters of advancement might be worth considering, as well as any other movements that could potentially improve the aesthetic outcome. I understand that the ideal movements depend on factors that can’t be fully assessed from a single scan, so I’m not expecting a definitive surgical plan, just some opinions to help me prepare for my consultation and make sure I’ve considered all the relevant options.
Thanks in advance!

I've had my splint in for 7 weeks, getting taken out this week! Its one of those splints that is behind the top teeth. It's made chewing and eating difficult even after being approved for soft foods. The splint makes my bite shallow so the bites aren't as effective.
How soon does that improve after getting the splint removed?

Sigh* just a vent post. I’m in the middle of the decompensation phase of braces and I literally hate my face more than ever lol. I know this happens and it’s temporary but it feels like forever, I’ve caught myself multiple times looking in the mirror like wait has my face always been THIS f*ckedddd upppp 🫠 now I even notice how off balance it is, not only just recessed, to where my lips literally look crooked. Anyway, I’m in the last few months stretch to be surgery ready and just having a moment. I can’t wait to be done with everything

Hi everyone! This is my first post here 😊
I'm a female. I was diagnosed with a Class II malocclusion, and I had orthodontic treatment where two upper premolars were extracted, and the spaces were closed to retract my front teeth. This wasn't orthodontic treatment in preparation for jaw surgery. I was just getting regular orthodontic treatment.
However, I'm not happy with the results, so I've been looking into double jaw surgery.
I've heard that if you've already had extraction orthodontics, you might need to move your front teeth forward again before jaw surgery, or in the worst-case scenario, you might not be able to have the surgery at all.💔
Has anyone here had double jaw surgery after completing extraction orthodontics? If so, could you please share your experience?
The main reasons I'm considering double jaw surgery are:
I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been through something similar. Thank you!! :3

3 orthodontists have examined me and none of them think I have a jaw problem, so none will refer me for a CBCT. My dentist called my bite borderline Class II. Ä
Plan I think is good: MARPE if needed, braces, wisdom teeth out, then BSSO, sliding vertical genio, Le Fort 1, maybe rhino.
