Ok so when iCarly came out I was in late elementary school, and from the get go I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE SHOW! I watched the entire thing from start to finish basically as close to live as possible
However being a boy, what I wasn’t prepared for was the very sad and pathetic social stigma attached to being a fan of this series
I remember when season 1 came out I was living in a town where I had a good group of friends and me and my best friend actually discovered it together and watched the eps together at times, then I moved away midway through season 2 and it wasn’t a talking point immediately at the new school so I didn’t talk to anyone about it
I remember the year was 2010, so it would have been like season 3-4 era, and we had a casual clothes/free dress day at school and one of the girls rocked up in an icarly shirt. And I said to her “yo I love that show it’s awesome”, now this particular girl wasn’t the nicest of girls anyway so socially it was a mistake to even approach her especially in a group of 3-4, but basically all the girls laughed at me and said that it’s a girls show and that you shouldn’t be watching this, and boy did I take it personally
I also remember there was a guy that would do/say stuff at school that were clear iCarly references and when I said “hey that’s from iCarly” he’d go “no it’s not, why would I watch that it’s a girls show I have never seen it”, even tho he clearly had
It wasn’t until well after it ended that I actually started talking to other guys about the series and for the most part those conversations happened as adults…which is fucking pathetic. Just because the show has a female lead doesn’t mean it’s for girls, by the end of the series the main cast actually was more male dominated but it always consistently had even genders which I think is a big reason why it actually worked
