Lore/World Discussion I actually feel really bad for Titus, the District 6 tribute who resorted to cannibalism.

I know Titus is mostly remembered as the tribute who resorted to cannibalism during the Hunger Games, but I honestly find his story more tragic than disturbing.

Think about it. He was a child who was taken from his home, thrown into an arena, and told that the only way he could ever see his family again was to kill other children. We don't know much about his circumstances or what drove him to cannibalism, but I can't help wondering what his mental state must have been like.

If the fan theory that his arena was a frozen tundra-like environment is close to the truth, that's even more brutal.

And what really gets me is the Capitol's reaction.

The Gamemakers were apparently so disgusted by his behavior that they had to stun him just to retrieve the bodies of the tributes he'd killed. Eventually, he died in an avalanche that was suspected of being deliberately engineered. But isn't that incredibly hypocritical?

The Capitol created a competition where children are encouraged to murder each other for entertainment. They starve them, traumatize them, manipulate their environments, and force them into situations where survival becomes their only priority. Yet somehow, Titus crossed a line?

Apparently, watching children stab, poison, and beat each other to death is A-okay, but cannibalism was where the Capitol suddenly developed a moral compass.

The Hunger Games are supposed to be entertaining. The Capitol wants its tributes to be compelling celebrities, not reminders of how horrifying the Games actually are. And apparently he set an unspoken precedent that cannibalism wouldn't be allowed in the Games?

I also wonder what would have happened if he'd won. That interview would have been something to watch!

I'm not arguing that what he did wasn't horrifying, but I think it's worth remembering that he was another child placed in an unimaginably cruel situation.

The Capitol created the circumstances that produced Titus, then apparently decided he was too monstrous to be allowed to live.

The Capitol are hypocrites.

Lore/World Discussion A thing I thought about a long time, but it lowkey needed to be said: thoughts?

Like how much have I heard the claim that Haymitch has “no friends”, a claim that Prim was reaped to punish Haymitch because she was his “best friend’s daughter” and in general acting as if the man was frozen in a cryogenic capsule for years.

I don’t think many get how much 25 years actually are - it’s literally stated in CF that Haymitch was friends with some victors, and his life (while miserable) for sure did not disappear in a black hole at 16 years old, him in a way possibly moving on from his old life like 10 times already in those two decades. Man lived a life that could fit 2 whole lives of Lenore Dove in it - loner or not, that’s still a lot of experience and he for sure would not be as fixated at the most minor stuff that happened to him when he was a teenager. Victors as a whole are an inner circle of their own, consisted of damaged people exactly like him; one thing for sure in some ways, Haymitch was not alone, as so many people who died during the 75th hunger games were his friends.

Hell, I say more, it’s not even a reach to say that he might have had relationships (or rather maybe drunk hookups once in a blue moon that didn’t work out due to his trauma over Lenore Dove). There is nothing crazy about it.

And yes, while Burdock was his best friend, he also was a best friend for some years before they had fallen out at 16-15 years old. This is a damn minor period of life for someone in his forties, so Haymitch not speaking much about Burdock or Asterid talking about him (since the Everdeens also had their separate lives away from him) makes way more sense that many claim. How much of you talk about your high school friends with whom you badly fought and lost contact again?

Prequel Discussion My THEORY about the winner of the first Quarter Quell

In the first Quarter Quell, designed to remind the districts that their children were dying because of them, the residents were required to vote on who would participate in the Games that year. This edition also saw the introduction of the tributes' parades, and it was the first time the phrase "may the odds be ever in your favor" was spoken. Beyond this, there is little information available about this particular iteration of the Games or its victor. Many speculate that the winner was a Career tribute, or that the district residents voted for those with the best chance of winning; however, I am not entirely convinced of this. Katniss suggests that being chosen by a vote is even worse than being selected by the Capitol, as it implies a betrayal by those you know. This could be the author’s way of indicating that many of the participants—and perhaps the eventual winner—were chosen due to the malicious intent of their fellow district residents, or simply because the community deemed them the "least necessary" among them.

My theory is that the winner may have been voted into the games because they weren't particularly well-liked or useful in their district, and when they entered, their chances of winning were extremely low. Yet, in a strange turn of events, luck always seemed to be on their side, which is perhaps where the famous phrase originated. Also, the winner might have been a highly charismatic individual who garnered significant support from the Capitol by providing entertainment for its citizens. Following their victory, the winner may have developed a sense of resentment toward their own district, and the others as well, for having effectively sent them and the other participants to their deaths. I believe that, in a way, the winner essentially became a citizen of the Capitol, seeking to erase any remaining connection to the district where they were born.

As for why we don’t see them later on, I believe it could be because they managed to find a way to erase their entire past, both as a district resident and as a victor of the Games. Alternatively, perhaps they died from an illness they already had—an illness that might even be the reason they were chosen for the Games in the first place; after all, what difference would it make to send a child to their death if they were already doomed to die regardless?

Trilogy Discussion I’m always so surprised by the amount of people that think Effie would sacrifice Peeta for Haymitch

In reference to her reaction to calling Haymitch’s name in the CF reaping. Every time it pops up for me somewhere, soooo many of the comments basically say that Effie’s one hope is that Haymitch wouldn’t have to go back out there… which just blows my mind lol.

I guess there’s no one true interpretation because it’s not specifically stated (I think) but this is something I would’ve been so sure on. That Effie obviously doesn’t want to lose any of them, but if she got her choice… she’d prioritize Peeta (and Katniss) over Haymitch. She might have the stronger bond with Haymitch because of the time spent together but she would be thinking of it as prioritizing younger life over “old” life and she would know that’s what Haymitch would want too. (And because she would go insane being alone with the negativity between Katniss and Haymitch if Peeta died. Peeta would obviously be very negative too… but in a softer, sadder way that she could handle lol.)

This might’ve not been worthy of a post but I’m always just so bewildered that so many people would think of that scene and Effie’s character in that moment so differently! (No offense to anyone that does think the opposite)

Trilogy Discussion You know looking back there is no way in hell i would be double crossing Snow due to the shear fear of what he would do to me if discovered. Plutarch was brave as hell.

Sunrise on the Reaping Theory about Lou Lou? Spoiler

I don't know whether to label this as a theory but do you think it is possible the only way Lou Lou was found as a replacement to Louella because maybe a Peacekeeper happened to see her and reported to the Capitol.

Correct me if I am wrong, I would assume all the districts in this period would have more surveillance cameras everywhere, but also all Panem citizens are watching the Games at the Hall of Justice. So do you think it was possible that maybe while the Chariot Parade was being shown on the screens, a Peacekeeper probably saw Lou Lou and reported to the Capitol that a girl from district 11 looks exactly like her?

Trilogy Discussion What are some movie and book differences that kill you just a little bit? Spoiler

Speaking strictly of the trilogy. Mine are: 1) Haymitch being blonde (being from the Seam means something people), and 2) the line "I would've saved myself a lot of suffering if I had given the bread to the pig" by Peeta in Mockingjay (BOOK PETA WOULD'VE NEVER)

Prequel Discussion Where is this?

In the clip plutarch asks haymitch "why do you agree do it?" Which makes me think it's the talk they had about the districts not fighting back. However I'm not sure because that interior doesn't look very capitol to me. Could it be the victors' village or am I overthinking it. It would be pretty shitty of him to visit haymitch after the homecoming, and especially after he lost everyone after trying to fight back. So it's probably just plutarch's place and he likes the look haha. What do you think?

Lore/World Discussion what really happened to LG? Spoiler

so, when i finished TBOSAS, it took me a while to really understand the ending. i was, like, is she really getting away? and then i put myself in her shoes and it became pretty clear lol. i guess snow was getting inside my head a little1

anyway, these past few days, i've seen a lot of theories about lucy gray's possible fate. the most popular theories i've seen are:

- she turned into coin, from district 13; i think that's hard to believe in, considering coin was 40-ish and she'd be born by the time of the 30th games. if she had been born before the dark days, she would be 70 or even 80 by the timeline we see on the oruginal trilogy.

- she turned into greasy sae; i do think that's a bit more plausible. the way she tends for gale and katniss, and, especially, the way she puts together the people from 12 to send katniss stuff in the arena by the 74th games, even when most can't afford to even feed their families most of the time, even without being sure she'd ever see them again... i do think that's something lucy gray would do, if she ever got back to 12, and wasn't she one of the first ever tributes to experience some sort of sponsorship? i think it would be an interesting parallel if she was greasy sae, who did her best to sponsor the kids going through the same she would have been through (if she was LG!)

- snow killed her and fantasized/lied to himself/hallucinated (he was bitten by a snake and maybe, while it hadn't been poisonous, might have caused some sort of vision?) that he was throwing the weapons in the lake when it was, in fact, her body?

- she got away.

i don't know, i think the ending of TBOSAS was kinda written purposefully to keep us in the dark about her, just like snow would have been. what do you guys think happened to her?
