Movie Review Just saw Roadkill(2008)and my only reaction is "what the fuck?" Anyone want to try and explain this movie to me?

• Upvotes

Normally I love me some Aussie horror films(Razorback, Houseboat Horror, Safety in Numbers, etc)and this one sounded right up my alley, I remember being excited about it when I first heard about it over 15 years ago, finally got around to seeing it and honestly it was kind of a letdown. Didn't hate it, but the film didn't provoke much reaction from me besides "what the fuck?", it explains fucking nothing. The basic plot is the main characters get run off the road by a Road Train(basically Australia's version of a trailer truck)and then have to commandeer it and find out it runs on blood or some shit like that, oh and people who enter into the rear trailer get possessed or some shit(and also magically heal as the one guy whose arm is broken is suddenly all better after going inside). I know some people like to complain about movies explaining too much and insulting people's intelligence, but given the choice i'd much rather take that over a movie like Roadkill which just throws a bunch of shit at the wall and explains absolutely none of it. That kind of approach only works if your movie is entertaining enough, Italian horror films can generally pull off that kind of thing, but Roadkill is far too boring too much of the time to make for it explaining fuck all about what happens. Does not help that the characters aren't that great, there's some kind of love triangle going on and characters act stupid even before they get possessed so it was difficult for me to really root for most anyone, final girl is alright I guess but we know so little about her that it's hard for me to care. The film also really pads itself out way too much(something like half of the movie is spent at a dead-end trying to back the truck out while the characters argue about stupid shit)for it's own good. Ending is also kinda lame. Some people might get more out of this film then I did, all I have left to say is I hope the other Fangoria Frightfest movies are more enjoyable then this one(i'm guessing FF was supposed to the spiritual successor to the After Dark Horrorfest? I can't remember).

anyone on here have any theories about all the shit that happens in this film? First off WTF was up with the dogs? Cerberus maybe?

Discussion Are all of Osgood Perkins’ movies boring and pretentious?

I have watched Longlegs and the Blackcoat’s daughter. I found myself bored to death and eye rolling at the pretentiousness. Are his other films more of the same?

Discussion Am I way off base or does the plot and themes of Midsommar kind of line up with I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream?

• Upvotes

The movie isn't about AI, and isn't about the end of the world by any means, but it is about a group of people being trapped in a place they can't leave no matter how hard they try. Whether they realize it or not their captor is manipulating, using, and ultimately torturing them. They're forced to act a certain way, have sex against there will, and they are being mutilated. In the case of everyone but Dani, literally mutilated, and in the case of Dani emotionally mutilated to the point she is a husk of a person at the end of the movie. And I can't help but draw similarities between emotionless trapped forever husk Dani walking slowly in her flower dress mirroring the final lines of I Have No Mouth where he is just a slimy goo pile trapped to forever move forward slowly. And in the case of Christian, at the end he literally has no mouth and can't scream when they paralyze him so he can't escape the fire.

The comparisons stop there, and I know for a fact this was not the intention of the movie, just something I noticed.

Discussion Crimes of the Future

• Upvotes

I’ll start by saying I love this film, but I’m wondering if anyone else was disturbed over the boys autopsy. I understand why they conducted it, but we are told multiple times leading up to it that “surgery is the new sex”. Wouldn’t that make a public autopsy something more than “performance art”? And if the spectators had no inkling of why the autopsy was even being performed, would people not be appalled at the notion and implication? Or perhaps everyone is too far gone?

Discussion My ideas for a The Thing “Remake”

Probably my favorite movie of all time and I will say that this movie DOES NOT NEED A REMAKE. But I love it so much that I can’t help but come up with ideas just for fun.

Random ideas that I like and keep in mind these are just scraps not fully fleshed out ideas:

- All new characters BUT Kurt Russel’s son plays a new version of MacReady. I totally believe he could pull it off.

- In this version, you can be the Thing and not even realize it. That’s how perfectly it imitates people. It pretty much creates “you” and then lets you go about your business. Only intervening and taking control very subtly so that the human consciousness doesn’t even realize it’s happening. When it’s been discovered, you instantly lose consciousness as your brain dissolves into a primordial soup and the Thing takes full control. This means that people who are the Thing will defend their innocence and their authenticity with 100% belief. It’s not the creature lying to you. It’s a copy who fully believes they are a person. The terror is not just “I can’t trust anyone”. An extra layer is added and you don’t even know if you are secretly a Thing. This also explains how imitations can act 100% authentically without the Thing having to know literally everything about humans and their social inner workings.

- A new death scene to show the full extent of the paranoia amongst the group. Someone who is human is burned alive by the flamethrower. Done at a moment where distrust is at its absolute peak which then results in the group devising the blood test which comes soon after.

- During the blood test scene, multiple Things reveal themselves right as the first one gets outed by the test. This creates even more chaos and hints that the creature is very smart and can plan ahead. It realizes its best chance of survival is to use overwhelming force instead of waiting to be discovered one by one while tied up. This scene is the climax of the movie and leads straight into the ending so that the movie ends on a high note instead of bringing the energy down and trying to ramp it back up again for a finale.

Crystal Lake Best Kills

What were everyone’s favorite slasher scenes? I think the restaurant kill and maybe the very first two in the house were the most effective ones in my book. I felt the boathouse deaths were underwhelming.

Haunting of Hill House as a parent

I adore The Haunting of Hill House.....novel, first film adaptation, second film adaptation. The Flanagan series is absolutely tearing my parent heart apart on my re-watch though. I didn't have kids when it first aired, now I have an entirely new perspective on Flanagan's story and it's equally more sad and more terrifying.

Any scary anime show?

Like any genuinely creepy & unsettling anime show?

It's a format I've started very recently & I've been liking it a lot. However, I don't go with AI suggestions as they're often mainstream ones!

So, it'd be great if you can suggest some scary anime shows!

What is the most boring horror movie you've ever watched?

And no, I'm not talking to the people who just label all slow burn horror "Boring", I'm talking "This movie felt like it lasted a week".

My ultimate title will always, ALWAYS go to Day of the Dead 2008 as the most boring movie PERIOD I have ever watched. It was infuriating how slow it felt. Jaws: The Revenge is a very close runner up.

What are your answers?

Discussion Why are Unnaturally Fast Monsters so Scary?

They're the only type of monsters in horror media that actually makes me feel uneasy. And when I say unnaturally fast, I don't mean like just running really quickly, I mean that the monster moves in such a way that it shouldn't be as fast as it is. I don't know what it is, but an example of what I'm trying to say is the slit-mouthed woman in the Senritsu Kaiki File on Youtube. Is there some sort of biological or evolutionary reason behind this fear?

The Last Car (Tales From The Darkside)

One of my favorite episodes of the series, right beside my all-timer which is Halloween Candy. Both episodes interestingly enough also from the second season. So wonderfully eerie and unsettling. I'd imagine this episode probably rates highly for many TFTD fans. It's easily one of the most genuinely frightening and I can only imagine how it must've terrified countless kids of the 80s back then. Amazing how a low-budget TV episode from a 4-decade old TV series is far more frightening and creepy than so many bigger budget studio productions. The entire premise of the episode and it's ending always stuck with me.

Why are the Friday the 13th side characters all so weird??

I watched five of these movies in a row for the first time between yesterday and today. What’s up with this whole town???? That guy who keeps doing random handstands in three? Or the absolutely out of pocket dancing from crispin glover in 4. Sometimes I watch these more for the freaky side characters than the kills

Discussion Watched Psycho for October Horrorwatch Day #19

Just finished Psycho in 4k. Though I've seen it many times and own the Blu Ray, but it was my first time with it in the upgraded format.

Thoughts:

- The 4k restoration is beautiful, easily a reference quality disc. This is the second black and white film I've watched in native 4k , the first being my copy of David Lynch's classic The Elephant Man, which is also a reference quality disc. Because these movies were shot on film and not digital, they are perfect for the format upgrade. It's dawning on me that black and white may in fact be even better served by 4k than color movies, which has me hoping we see a proper upgrade of the classic 1933 King Kong to the format.

- Psycho is still one of the most absorbing movies I've ever seen. It's forty seven minutes into the film before the famous shower scene and the film is an hour and forty nine minutes long.

But because Hitchcock was, well, Hitchcock, he can take a forty seven minute stretch of film about nothing more than a couple talking about their future and the woman deciding to steal some money and go be with the guy and turn it into a gripping, suspense filled journey..... and that's all prior to Norman Bates even showing up.

Not only does Hitch make this work in such a way you don't even notice almost halfway through that no actual psycho has shown up yet, but he uses it as the best example of misdirection in film history, because the audience does not see what happens to Marion Crane coming at ALL.

We all know now because the film has been studied, deconstructed, celebrated and even parodied countless times.... but I first saw Psycho in 1981 when our local TV station Channel 29 aired it commercial free as a special event one Friday night. I was ten and had never seen the film, only heard of it, and vaguely knew an old lady apparently went crazy and stabbed people. That's it. I had no clue about the twists or anything, meaning I actually know what it's like to experience Psycho for the first time without knowing anything about it and have it impact the viewer as intended, and I guarantee no one in 1960 even remotely suspected Marion would be killed, much less that early and in such an unexpected manner.

And about that murder: Exorcist III has what I think is the scariest jump scare in movie history, but I still say the shower scene from Psycho is the single most terrifying cinematic sequence I have ever witnessed. It's amazing how a scene that never actually shows the knife pierce Janet Leigh's skin can seem so absolutely brutal thanks to how sudden, frenetic and brilliantly edited it is.It also taps directly into our worst fears. I imagine being stabbed to death by a psychopath who catches you completely off guard while you're standing stark naked, wet and completely vulnerable in a shower has to top a lot of people's lists of the worst possible ways to die.

- Finally - and I will stand by this until I draw my terminal breath - the fact that Anthony Perkins did NOT actually win an Academy Award for his performance as Norman Bates is the single greatest crime in the history of the awards. That's absolutely unbelievable and stands as the biggest mistake the Academy has made to date.

Tomorrow I pull out the Blu Ray box set of the Psycho films and continue with the film I actually enjoyed a little more than the original, Psycho II.

Recommend Creature Feature/Monster Movies with practical effects? (Stop-Motion/Puppetry/Costume)

I’m looking for any good Mythology, Fantasy, Horror or Sci-fi film that uses practical effects for the monster(s).

Whether it is an actor in a monster puppet suit (Godzilla-style), a stop-motion animated creature (Ray Harryhausen-style), or a complex puppet of the sorts (ALIENS).

It can be Horror or not-Horror, whether it’s like Beast from 20,000 Fathoms or Jason & The Argonauts

Discussion If I were to make a bong based off of EB from the Evil Bong series that you could actually smoke out of how would I go about doing that?

I figured since it’s so popular that there had to be some kind of novelty evil bong inspired bong that you can actually smoke out of but no. There were none that I could find.

The I realized I could hypothetically make it myself since I go to an art school which gives me access to a bunch of free tools. But I’ve never made a bong, so how would I start?

Gonna also repost this to a crafting subreddit or a bong subreddit for more help

Oddity plot holes

I thought the beginning of the movie was fantastic and I was really excited at the whole "you're trapped in here with me" sister revenge concept. But at about the halfway point I really felt it started to go downhill.

In particular there were a number of plot holes or at least confusing elements that distracted me so much I stopped enjoying the tension.

-Why was Olin, the one eyed guy, at a halfway house when the golem kills him and not in police custody? Darcy was told he killed her sister so he's definitely been accused of murder, so why was he just staying at a halfway home?

-Why did Olin not just tell Danny "I overheard your husband planning to get Ivan to kill you, I'm here to help you!" I mean he overheard the plot and then travelled all the way there to warn her and then just....didnt say anything except "I saw someone go in the house!"

-How is the doctor not a suspect after the police find his phone records with a call between him and his employee discussing something "having a fall and being broken beyond repair" at the same location and time of death as a woman who fell and died in his house?

-Why was Olin accused of murdering Danny in the first place? We see him run away to go to the village to get help, then presumably he returns with police and Danny has been smashed to death with a hammer. Olin doesn't have any blood on him but there is blood splashed all over the crime scene, his fingerprints aren't on the weapon, and he was the one who went to go get help to report an intruder and overheard the doctor planning to kill his wife to inherit a large house.

-What the fuck was Darcy's plan?? She said she was going to kill the doctor but decided she wanted to expose him instead? How exactly was she going to do that? And wtf is she doing at the house all day and night with a murder doll if she decided she didn't want to kill him? She says she wants to kill Ivan but again, then why is she just sitting around the house? Why didn't she just send the murder doll to Ivan like she sent it to Olin? And why does she announce to a man she already knows is capable of murder "I'm going to ruin your life and take everything from you!" And then just let him leave?

So much of the writing felt really amateur and trope-y. Darcy monologuing about how she'll ruin someone's life and expose him to the police just long enough to convince him he definitely needs to get her out of the picture. Hiring a mental patient to murder your wife because "she loves me and she'll never get over me and also I really want that old house" instead of just getting a divorce. Man who knows about a murder plot but only speaks in riddles and says super vague unhelpful stuff.

And SO many leads that went nowhere?? What was the point of the camera?? What was the point of having all that screen time with Yana just to have her drive off and never be seen again? All that stuff inside the golems head had no impact on anything and never came up again. Dani is apparently still present as a ghost but never does anything besides turn the lights off and appear in photos sometimes? Why isn't she the one getting revenge??

Not to mention how absolutely ridiculous the golem looks when it actually starts moving. It just looks like a dude wearing a slightly textured onesie walking completely normally around a house

I see so many people raving about how incredible it was and I just feel confused. I feel like it had a lot of potential but kind of fell apart the longer it went.

Discussion Men (2022) - Help me with this Spoiler

Finally watched this just now and I know there is a lot to unpack other than this but the last couple of shots are really bugging me and its possible that it just can't be explained but here goes:

So Harper is wearing a white dress throughout the final night encounter with the Green Man demon being thing. Obviously the final thing we "see," (because we don't know what is real), is her sitting on the couch with the axe and the thing having birthed an incarnation that looks like James.

So when Riley, her friend, arrives at the house and sees her sitting outside...all of a sudden her dress is pink. There are two possibilities here and neither work for me.

  1. She chopped up the body of the thing so much in her cathartic fury that it stained her dress completely red/pink. This doesn't make sense because her face and everything else doesn't have any extra blood. She only has the small smear of blood on her chin that we see during the final scenes.

  2. She changed clothes. Also doesn't work because she still has a lot of blood on her. Why wouldn't she also take a bath if she were going to change her clothes?

Am I missing an explanation, is this just a continuity error, or is there symbolism here I'm missing that meaningfully explains this?

Tl;dr Harper's dress is pink in the last scene when it was white before that and she doesnt seem to have changed clothes because she still has blood on her.

Witchtrap from 1989 is a fun yet trashy horror film.

The main character is awesome. It’s a shame they didn’t make more movies with this character. It’s great if you are looking for that straight to video vibe. Also I love the insults in a movie.
