Synopsis: Based on Stephen King's iconic debut novel, Carrie is a bold, timely, and surprising reinvention of the classic coming‑of‑age story, adapted as a television series for the first time by visionary showrunner Mike Flanagan. The series follows misfit high‑schooler Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) who has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.

Discussion John Carpenter’s new comment on the ending of The Thing

John Carpenter has added to his own statements about the ending with MacReady and Childs.

  1. “Yes, one of them was a thing.” - 2012 tweet on X

  2. “Every idea that people have is not the right one. I know the right one. It’s right in the movie too. There is a big clue. No one has guessed it.”- new Oct 18 2026 interview interview on X

This squashes some of the most widely held fan theories (shared bottle passing germs, gas in the bottle, breath/eye lighting). Basically anything you’ve seen on YouTube so far is ruled out.

My own new theory to contribute (searched and haven’t seen this proposed yet).

If MacReady had become infected then he would have retrieved the warning tape recording he previously created and hid, and destroyed it. The fact that he lets the tape stay hidden until the end proves he isn’t the thing. It must be Childs.

Clayface immediate reaction

Just got out of the secret screaming tonight and as many anticipated it was Clayface. It was nice to have a fairly full house as many others seemed to take the same (albeit fairly safe) gamble.

As for the film itself its a very good piece of work, there aren't many jumpscares but instead some horror moments that genuinely make you cringe (in a good way) and put your hands to your mouth. The story was very well written and goes far beyond the body horror and at times become truly heartfelt as you feel for Hagen as he desperately pursues his return to stardom. A very solid 9/10. The final shot of the movie will leave most fans very happy.

I hope this doesnt break any embargo rules or anything I just really wanted to share my immediate reaction with the appropriate audience.

Recommend Do yourself a favor and go watch The Devils (1971) this week while it's in theaters

I just got home and I'm still processing everything because the themes hit close to home but it's visually stunning with beautiful costume design and awesome set design you just don't see these days.

Hidden Gem Although it seems to be forgotten despite awards at the time, Casper Kelly - currently trending for the acclaimed mascot horror 'Buddy' - did a fantastic Scooby Doo rendition of the Blair Witch Project:

It also was an early proponent of a serious, darker angle to the overall universe and franchise (which I adore from Mystery Incorporated). The episode is legitimately unsettling at points and has quite the unique juxtaposition of animation with actual footage! Scooby Doo was an early introduction to horror for many of us, childish but spooky - it's always nice to see that tailored for us in a mature tone since we've aged!

Discussion Carrie 2013 had the most psycopathic Chris Hargensen.

In the 1976 version, she was mean but too over the top to be taken seriously. Her sadistic and sociopathic behavior was glossed over. Fun fact: The actress who played 1976 Chris thought it was a comedy until she found out the rest of the plot. In the book and the 2002 film, Chris at least has some remorse for what she did, and begs for Billy not to run over Carrie, her last thought being that although she hated Carrie, she did not wish her to be dead.

However, 2013 Chris is spoiled, condescending, and sadistic and shows no mercy or remorse. Her sociopathy and sadistic behavior is more emphasized. The pig-hunting scene was unnerving because Billy jokingly told Chris to "pick one that looks like her (Carrie)" and Chris took this seriously, implying that as Billy brought down the sledgehammer on the poor pig, and Chris slit the beast's throat, she did not see herself doing it to the pig, but imagined herself doing it to CARRIE herself. This could imply that Chris probably hated Carrie to the point where she wanted her dead even before the prom massacre (and the poor girl did nothing to her before the Prom), and would probably try to murder her if given the chance. Oh wait. She did.

Quick tip: If a telekinetic girl is standing on the street covered in blood, DO NOT try and run her over. Make a U-turn and run like Hell.

Movie Review I just watched a mystery screening of Clayface

Since I personally always look for more negative opinions to decide if I wanna see a film (the world is full of shills), this will mostly be me verbalizing or articulating my complaints. That said, I thought the movie was great and I'll touch on that a bit too.

So, it had the pacing and the world building of a movie that assumes some audience familiarity with its wider established universe, and consequently I felt the editing at times was a bit off, though I'd have to watch it again to really explore that feeling further. I also thought the pacing of Matt Hagen's arc was a tiny bit hasty at points, but that's not unusual when a writer has a certain well-established goal their character arc needs to hit and only 100 minutes to get there.

I also think the background cityscapes, presumably made with CGI, gave the film at times this uncanny feeling I'm not sure was intentional.

Speaking of CGI, there is of course a mix of practical effects and CGI and it's mostly to excellent effect, though there was at least one instance where it looked kinda slick and off and they clearly coulda gotten a better result with some cheap practicals, but I won't go into details to remain spoiler-free.

I also thought the, let's say skin-deep transformations, were too quick and lacked any oomph behind them (again I don't wanna spoil but you'll get what I mean when you see it), but I left with the impression that it was entirely intentional and an artistic choice, by how they were used. Not a choice I agree with, mind, but it makes me feel more nitpicky about my complaint.

Now, all that said, gotta say I loved the film. Full disclosure though I love body horror and Clayface is one of my favourite Batman villains, and seeing an actual horror movie, a reverse horror at that, in a comics universe makes me very happy. The setting and the kills and the clay effects and the at times absolute whimsy Rhys Harries brought to Clayface in the more iconic scenes were all a delight. In the end I walked away from the theatre with a strong feeling of "this is how you do a villain origin story".

If the movie flops commercially it's definitely gonna be a cult classic and a great double feature with Darkman, and I predict I'll personally be revisiting this more than once. Hell I'll probably watch it again in the theaters after it premiers.

For people who likes a quantifiable score I'd give it either a strong 7 or a weak 8 out of 10.

Discussion I just rewatched Friday the 13th (1980) and the movie really feels like a fever dream

• Upvotes

I just decided to rewatch it because of Crystal Lake (I still didn't finish it) and for some reason the movie seems more upsetting than before.

It really feels like that I'm watching a crazy fever dream and how everything is weird and doesn't make sense. How there's a sense of danger and how it feels smaller and smaller for some reason. It feels something different from the other slasher movies. The retro vibe is really upsetting and makes feels like a fever dream.

Specially the ending scene and the music. It's like a crazy feeling of dreams, nostalgia and fear. I can't explain.

Does anyone feel the same?

Movie Review TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT - 7/10

Demons are on the hunt for a key that contains the blood of Christ. It is protected by a DEMON KNIGHT.

This long-format episode of TALES FROM THE CRYPT is exactly what you’d expect from a motion picture version of an episode. I love that they kept the series format, with an intro and outro featuring The Crypt Keeper. It was awesome! I had so much fun with it!

We get right into it with what seems to be a pretty straightforward story. But as things progress, we get more details through flashbacks, which I love. I would have wanted more flashbacks and more story depth, but that’s just me being greedy. What we got was perfectly fine and fit the story nicely.

Billy Zane, William Sadler, Jada Pinkett Smith, Brenda Bakke, CCH Pounder, Dick Miller, Thomas Haden Church, John Schuck, Gary Farmer, and John Kassir make up a solid cast, with good characters that work well with the story.

For me, though, it was the look, the feel, the atmosphere, just the overall vibe that did it for me. It’s totally 90s! Those demons are slimy, viscous, and have amazing screams. We get some nice gore and violence, with the visuals still looking great and really bringing me back. It hits that nostalgia button… hard!

I can’t believe I had never seen DEMON KNIGHT before and that it took me this long to do so. I had a blast with this one and I definitely recommend checking it out.

I’m giving it a…

Shoutout to everyone that went to go watch Ken Russell's The Devils

I went to watch the film this past Saturday and man It did not DISAPPOINT. I went in fully aware that it was going to be weird a little outdated and possibly Overhyped. But I was wrong, I think my favorite reaction was the one my wife had... mid movie she looked at me and said "WTF are we watching" And I couldn't even explain. I had been wanting to watch this movie since I was 15, and I would read about it on blogs and it was always on countdowns of most offensive films of all time. I'm curious to see how everyone else felt about it!

Recommend House (1977) might be the strangest version of body horror I've ever seen

I finally watched House expecting Japanese haunted house stuff and basic stuff like this, which it absolutely is in some way, but I wasn't expecting how obsessed the movie is with taking bodies apart.
I also want to point out how beautifully the film was made, from the color correction to the framing and the surroundings. It really was a mix of aesthetic and disgust, wow.
And somehow it does it without feeling anything like Cronenberg.
The whole movie feels like somebody gave a child scissors, glue, a horror script and way too much sugar.
A girl gets eaten by a piano. Fingers keep playing after they're separated from the rest of her. Heads float around. Legs exist on their own. Bodies disappear into furniture, clocks, water, the house itself.
On paper that sounds like pretty straightforward body horror.
But House presents all of it with the logic of a children's cartoon.
That's what made it weirdly effective for me.
Most body horror depends on making you intensely aware of flesh. Skin stretching, teeth falling out, infection, wounds, things growing where they shouldn't. You feel trapped inside the body with the character.
House almost does the opposite.
The human body stops feeling solid at all. House somehow makes the body feel LESS real.
Someone can be chopped into pieces and the pieces just continue participating in the movie. A severed head isn't necessarily the end of a person, it's another visual gag. A pair of legs can practically become its own character.
And because the effects are so obviously artificial, it somehow gets away with images that would be incredibly nasty in a more realistic film.
The piano scene is probably the thing. I don't think a realistic version would stick in my head nearly as much.
It made me wonder where people actually draw the line around body horror. Does it need to make the body disgusting, or is destroying the idea that your body is stable enough, cause there are different types of body horror (the subtypes deserve their own post because there are quite a few classifications)
Because House mostly just destroys the assumption that your body will remain one coherent object for the next five minutes.
And apparently that's enough for me.
I've never seen a movie make being eaten alive look this fun.
It's perfect if you're in the mood for something both disgusting and beautiful at the same time

What are some "so bad its good" horror movies you could talk about for hours?

• Upvotes

I am posting in hopes of encountering some fellow low budget/campy horror fans who would like to give me some recommendations! Not really any other requirements, I like almost anything, except maybe phycological stuff. Creature features and body horror have been my jam lately, but feel free to break the mold with your suggestions :) thanks!

And please, no major spoilers, I do plan on watching these.

Discussion Deep Rising creature design

I have loved this film for basically the three decades it has existed. It’s fun, energetic, hilarious, thrilling, and at the right times, gory and frightening.

Treat Williams kills it in the lead role as do all of his supporting cast. The film knows what it is and embraces it.

But DAMN that creature design, especially the tentacles, is just such an absolute joy to watch. Nearly 30 years later, I‘ve still never seen anything like this monster, and it’s truly unsettling. The film does an amazing job withholding its monster, and what a treat when it’s revealed to be something original, that you’ve never seen before.

Sure, the CGI isn’t quite up to snuff anymore, but the tentacles still move with tremendous life and speed and detail in their many scenes.

Absolutely adore the film, and huge respect for the concept of its monster.

The film should never be remade, but the creature is so undeniably cool, it would be a joy to see it again on screen, in some capacity.

Now what?

Discussion Hammer’s The Curse of Frankenstein has an argument for best Frankenstein film

Peter Cushing is unreal in this role. The weight of his performance cannot be overstated. The characterization here is I believe the best of any Frankenstein movie. He is portrayed as a total psychopath. Driven to the point of barely controlled madness. But Cushing never feels hammy or like he’s chewing the scenery. There is a dignity that is overlayed on an oppressive gravity in his scenes.

The sets are beautiful. The blood is plentiful. Bright red using a integral-tripack, single-strip color motion picture film system called Eastmancolor. The atmosphere is to die for. The aesthetics would go into influence many including the likes of Scorsese, Lucas, and Eggers. There is so, so much to love in this film.

I’d say this and Bride of Frankenstein are my two favorite movies in the Frankenstein film cannon. But Bride is monster focused. Curse of Frankenstein is far more concerned with the doctor and his savagery disguised as the pursuit of science!

Best line in a horror movie

I was watching Night of the Comet and one of the bad guys said "I'm not crazy, I just don't give a fuck!" It made me laugh and inspired this post. Just curious about any other lines that people have enjoyed. One more I qoute all the time "The next words out of your mouth better be some brilliant Mark Twain shit! Cause it's definitely getting chiseled on your Tombstone." From The Devils Rejects.

Silver Pines is a game very much worth checking out

So in the midst of this amazing spooky season of gaming that we are in the game Silver Pines I think is getting missed by many players. I know I have seen it brought up in a few threads as a comment but I saw no dedicated post so wanted to give it some attention.

It is a 2D side scrolling metroidvania style game set in a very familiar pacific northwest small town environment. You will definitely get vibes that remind you of Twin Peaks and Silent Hill. The game has a wonderful art design and atmosphere that are really interesting. They use rotoscoping in their visuals so it gives the game a very unique look and feel. Sound design is impressive as well. Overall the game just oozes style.

I was really excited and looking forward to Silent Hill Townfall but have to say this is the one I am playing more for that classic 'guy explores weird town' game at the moment.

Discussion I saw Talk To Me and Bring Her Back within a few days of each other…

Obvious HUGE spoilers for both movies in this post, so if you haven’t seen both or have only seen one, maybe go watch those first.

I enjoyed both movies immensely. The directors have a knack of setting up scenes that go from 0-60 in half a second. That being said, and this just like, my opinion, man (TheDude.jpg), I felt TTM was the more fun of the two but BHB was the better movie.

There was a sort of immaturity in TTM that brought it down. However, the directors’ ability to get a party atmosphere going and then suck the air out of it when something disastrous happens was solid. But those party scenes went on a bit long and gave the overall film a more immature feeling.

BHB on the other hand was way more somber and dealt more heavily with real-world horrors like abusive family members, loss of guardians, bullying, and grief/loss. The directors changed the ending after someone close to them died (he’s the “in memory of” before the credits roll), and that’s why it ended on a more somber note and not the full-on horror ending originally planned (source IMDb). But I liked the ending. Also, I felt the little demon boy (forgot his name) was actually really sad and tragic. It reminded me of the girl who was possessed by Paimon in Hereditary.

Overall I give both films probably an A-, but for different reasons. Personally I liked BHB more, but I think both should be required viewing for any horror buff that hasn’t seen them.

Movie Review Just watched The Descent (2005) for the first time. I think that was the most perfect movie ever?

That was fucking crazy. Holy shit. Didn't expect the movie to start off with a Final Destination moment and then turn into a trauma flick. First off wont bury the lede it's fucking terrifying. The whole premise off being 1) in an unmapped cave system that 2) has its entrance blocked right after you enter a new chamber. And then you add on the Bone Tomahawk Trogdolytes? Fuuuuck.

Speaking of fuck, fuck Juno. Most hateable character ever, although I will giver the grudging respect that she is a ruthless badass who can scrap. But for real: clearly banging Sarah's husband for one and then tricks the entire group into an extreme unmapped cavern instead of the nice safe one they were supposed to do. Insane. I woulda throttled that bitch on the spot if I were there when that was revealed, at least a group beatdown once we get out of there.

Also early on when the group first crosses a big chasm Juno tries to freeclimb the wall like Becca had done earlier and fucks up, falling and causing Becca to slice open her hand attempting to belay her. Just another unspoken Juno-sucks-moment I wanna point out.

And that's the other thing, we never had a long confrontation where Juno explains herself. Sarah learns she's two faced from Beth's death and gets pretty solid confirmation of the affair when it's revealed that Juno's necklace has Sarah's hubbie's catchphrase engraved on it. No need for long exposition, love that.

And all the fight scenes, SO chaotic and utterly frantic feeling. There was only one death that bugged me, girl towards the end who was scaling the ceiling and manages to stab the trogdoltye but only after she gets got first. She put the knife in her mouth instead of just trying to stab at the trog before it got to her, that didn't make sense. But that's like my one quibble with this whole film lmao

And then if you really want to zoom out you can say this whole adventure is about Sarah going through the absolute depths of hellish grief and cutting off her old life in the process to ascend back to life. Or something like that.

4/4 Stars; loved it
