Guidelines: Please post hip hop discussions/questions/nostalgia that doesn't already cleanly fit into one sub's fandom and is cross sectional for analysis from the community

If it's just some promo/propaganda/low effort stan wars or something that (is 1 dimensional and) already cleanly fits into another sub's fandom, then it will be removed, and posting more will get you banned

here is the directory of subs: https://www.reddit.com/r/hip_hop/comments/k2nroe/lets_list_every_major_hip_hop_related_subreddit/ aka post in this sub if the other sub doesn't exist, is restricted from posting, or has few participants

We prefer multifaceted posts where submissions and questions are coming from anecdotes and the reach of multiple artists AND fandoms within hip hop to chime in where you wouldn't otherwise find or are able to ask/post easily elsewhere...aka ask hard/intricate questions and challenge status quo, do not pitch your thoughts underhanded, for those belong on r/Hiphopcirclejerk etc

The exception is: if that other sub has absentminded sleepwalking mods that barely do anything (or overstep and clap even the good posts if you challenge authority and the mods get slighted) and the global automod/scripted autobot censorship is activated that overrules and removes half the answers and the very question asked due to this age of sanitized culture (based on the mod/admin/algorithm's subjective sensitivity issues, aka reddit's ads agenda is similar to youtube demonetizing/shadowbanning content), then we'll allow them here, due to fringe topics etc (also give us a heads up to see if the other sub in question can be liberated, but mods be powertripping)

A lot of posts are auto-clapped by the global automod and has to be manually approved on here for people to see both posts and comments, and we try to bring the best value in topics presented and answered, but please participate in that manner as well for this shared community, thanks

No more Tournament/Bracket/loosely unrelated album vs unrelated album Versus style posts

The whole gambit was allowed to be ran (for 62 days!) and Illmatic wins... https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphop201/comments/1smnv1l/rap_bracket_tournament_day_62_reasonable_doubt_vs/

for it to be hiphop201, there needs to be questions asked under the premise that the basic information is known and further knowledge is pursued as a hot topic debate or barbershop talk as cognitive banter or shared memorable reflection/nostalgia/insight, not just use a RNG filter on some top rap album tier list and arbitrarily seed comparisons with barely any articulated constraints for some zero-sum single-elimination hunger games depending on how the crowd decide to pile on that day

if you're consistently posting with net 0 upvotes or getting heckled in the responses/downvoted to hell, consider trying something else...it seems like attaching a meme with a serious question helps like with the latest type of posts...just put the reasoning backing behind posts for why these type of questions matter to spark further responses with actual answers with substance in there and NOT just repetitively phrased answers, thanks

otherwise, redirect these elimination posts over here to r/RemoveOneThingEachDay or /r/nfrpodcast etc

also, here's a plug to r/diplomats (alt sub) r/maxb /r/Three6Mafia r/papoose r/bigpun r/bigl r/mosdef r/mobbdeep subs if you haven't seen it already

Got a playlist I been working on, but I know there has to be a lot more music I’m missing

It’s “Poe Man Blues” themed playlist. Rap, but with a “blues” feeling. Basically, I’m looking for good “pain” music with a southern feel. Shit to smoke to and reevaluate my life decisions lol. Slower on the BPM side of things….kinda introspective….I fuck with a lil singin like Boosie or even Lil poppa, but not excessive like young thug

I been fuckin with some Dave East lately. He got some songs but it’s a lot to filter through. Lmk if there are some Boosie songs I’m missing. I know for a fact I am. He in my top ten, but it’s so many songs that I can probably add.
Yall can help??

Wayne contributed WAY more to Drake’s success than just influencing his work ethic, and I genuinely don’t understand how people keep downplaying this.

When Wayne was arguably the hottest rapper in the game, he was putting Drake on records, bringing him on tour, helping him financially, and giving him a co-sign that most upcoming artists could only dream of. *Ignant Shit, Uptown, Successful, Unstoppable;* and that’s not even getting into all the other collaborations and features that came with Drake being associated with Young Money.

Do people genuinely think every artist who worked with Drake back then would’ve been as eager to collaborate with a relatively unknown Canadian rapper if he wasn’t affiliated with Wayne?

And let’s be real, *Comeback Season* wasn’t some massive cultural phenomenon outside of the underground hip-hop scene and Toronto. The real breakthrough came with *So Far Gone*, but Wayne’s involvement was a significant part of the bigger picture that made Drake such an attractive prospect to major labels.

Obviously, Drake had the talent and eventually became a superstar in his own right. Nobody’s denying that. But acting like Wayne’s contribution was limited to influencing his work ethic is ridiculous. That’s not even touching the fact that early Drake vocal cadence completely changed into a Wayne adjacent sound with so far gone, which helped immensely with Drake getting so popular

Is Eminem's love for hip hop performative?

I don't mean his love for rapping. That's not what I'm arguing. I feel like his love for hip hop is super performative. He'll wear t-shirts with golden age albums from artists like Big Daddy Kane or "Runaway Slave" by Showbiz and A.G. During Eminem's induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he named over 100 rappers. It all seems so "try-hard" to me as if he's painting himself as a perpetual outsider that is desperate to signal his authenticity as a "real hip hop head" to onlookers.

And this is all on top of the fact that he still doesn't have any songs with his supposed most adored hip-hop icons like Pharoahe Monch, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Kool G Rap, J Dilla (I realize he is no longer alive), Masta Ace and many others (obvs because he's too busy making songs with Skylar Grey for the millionth time). Why did it take Eminem almost 22 years to name drop MF DOOM on the song "EPMD 2" when he was aware of him all the way back in 1999? It's like, "Oh, no. He passed away. Now I have to name drop him even though I've never mentioned his name before in interviews or as a reference in music."

Or you look at an album like "Sincerely, Detroit" produced by Apollo Brown, it has nearly every skilled lyricist from Detroit (and other parts of Michigan) on it, but Eminem is suspiciously absent.

A flaw in "GOAT" debates.

A few days ago someone asked who was a better rapper between nas and lil wayne. The majority chose Nas and many were disrespecting Wayne for whatever reason. A few commenters made comments like "Wayne doesn't even belong in the GOAT discussion".. cherry picking corny lines or something else to that effect.

In my defense of Wayne I brought up the numbers Wayne used to do... specifically the million+ in a week. I was instantly bombarded with mockery and ridiculed because apparently numbers don't matter and are irrelevant.

I think that's an illogical and weird (not really... I know why numbers are discredited) position to hold that numbers don't get consideration when you're taking a position on somebody you think is the goat and I'll explain why it's flawed.

We all have to earn money. Whatever you do in life you have to earn money. The billionaire and the bum both have to make money. It's not an infinite resource for anybody. So we all (or at least we all should) consider where it's spent carefully.

When I brought up Wayne doing a million+ in a week that means people used a limited resource that they have to earn by working to support Wayne and buy his music. Regardless of your personal opinion about his music that's a fact that one million+ individuals chose to purchase his music .....so to dismiss that stat is to ignore a massive historical win....First week sales of that magnitude indicate a crazy level of anticipation, cultural relevance, and demand that very few artists in any genre have ever achieved.

That counts for something regardless of who is being debated.

You cannot just disregard that and claim it doesn't matter because it's not directly correlated with skill or talent... however it does indicate impact. Nas might be more technically skilled but that doesn't matter if the bars don't move you enough to buy the music.

Tupac and biggie are excellent examples of my overall point... big was no question the better technical rapper and while pac didn't have all the fancy wordplay? Nobody will ever say a big song compared to a pac song had more depth and emotion in it.

Which is why many people choose pac over big in that debate.

With Nas and Wayne there's a similarity there...

I recall when Wayne took Mike Jones beat to Mr. Jones and made "sky is the limit"

Bro.... the fucking impact that song had was crazy... I remember going to house parties and they would go absolutely NUTS when that intro came on... I'm talking mfs knew the whole song by heart jumping and screaming the lyrics. I've never seen that phenomenon with a Nas song. Nas has absolute classics N.Y. State of Mind, If I Ruled the World, Made You Look, etc but his music commands a different kind of respect. People nod their heads and analyze Nas verses in a room. Wayne's music, at his peak, created collective high energy cultural synergy.

If a rapper can command a room of hundreds of people to scream every single bar of a 5 minute song verbatim that is a supreme demonstration of power and skill. Dismissing that as "not rap excellence" is pure bullshit and you know it.

Impact in goat debates count or they aren't goat debates they are a "this is who I like more" debate.... and what's a perfect way to measure impact? By the number of albums an artist sold.

You can be the most technically skilled rapper, writing the most complicated verses and have an elite flow... but if a simpler rapper, with simpler verses and a good flow can compose music that impacts harder does the more skilled rapper really win the "GOAT" debate? I think not.

Skills do count for something but when you ask a question like "who better between X and Y?" Then you have to explicitly define the criteria of "better"... when you ask who the GOAT you have to measure EVERY aspect of the individual you think qualifies... you can't just cherry pick things to compare them on and disregard others so that your choice appears to be superior... then that's not a "GOAT" debate... it's a rigged question to get the answer you desire. A GOAT debate requires an artist to be a master of the entire sport not just a few cherry picked things.

So the next time an artist is pitted against another and somebody brings up numbers (impact) then either come up with something your choice has that matches that or shut up because as much as yall dislike it?

Numbers will always count in a GOAT debate.

🤷🏿‍♂️
