TV SHOW 📺 Heated Reality: hockey's struggle with race

I've seen some posts about recognizing the severity and depth of discrimination within hockey, sports, and society in general. If you're interested in learning more, especially if you're going to be writing fanfiction, you owe it to yourself and others to become aware of the racism problem in hockey and its affects on others. The history of hockey is full of erased players of color.
Black Ice is a documentary based on the book Black Ice: The Lost History of the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes, 1895-1925 by Darril and George Fosty. It's free on Tubi in the US right now. And it's enlightening, heartbreaking, and hopeful all at the same time.
Although he's not in the documentary, if you're also a fan of Shoresy, you should be aware that Jonathan-Ismael Diaby, who plays Dolo also experienced such vicious hate directed at him and his family that he walked off the ice during a game in Quebec in 2019. And Boston treated him like shit, too (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-47394381).
One thing Tierney, Williams, and Chang improved upon was the ongoing microagressions against Shane's Asian-ness. As fans of the books, the series, and possibly hockey, I think it's important that we hear from real live people about how much more serious the issue is.

DISCUSSION 🗣️ What is your most frivolous headcanon that does not matter at all?
Mine is that Shane slowly starts almost liking the smell of cigarettes through his relationship with Ilya, the same way he's probably also used to, if not somewhat enjoys, the smell of locker rooms and ice rinks, because they all remind him of something that makes him happy. And when Ilya finally quits, Shane's going to miss the smell from time to time. This hc doesn't matter at all because gun to his head, he will never admit this out loud, especially not to Ilya.

DISCUSSION 🗣️ Is it really impossible to be openly gay and a hockey player?
Editing to add: Wow, didn't expect such a conversation to ensue, but I'm glad it's a place to discuss this. I myself am not queer, don't have many gay friends and the sports world is as far away from me as possible, I also don't live in the states and know practically nothing about sports or hockey, so forgive my ignorance with everything to do with that. I've read most of the comments and better understand how devastatingly difficult it would be to come out as gay in the sports world. We're in this mostly fluffy world of HR but I didn't consider or realize the extent to which real life homophobia and cruelty affect people, so I do apologize if my post came across as ignorant. I truly love HR and have such compassion for Shane and Ilya's struggles, even if it's only in fiction form, but this should also be applied to real people who struggle with this reality constantly.
I've been immersed in fan fiction since the show ended, and one thing that I've seen repeatedly is the notion that they can't be hockey players and openly gay. I understand from being in the HR Fandom that the hockey and sports community is very toxic, homophobic and cruel. But...would it be really IMPOSSIBLE or just really really hard and awful and scary? This might be a naive question but it's really been bugging me lately.
Intrestingly I've seen several works of media dealing with being gay and the community recently, and among them HR was the most positive story, though in the show we haven't really gotten the community's reaction like we do in The Long Game. But dammit we're in the 21st century, why is humanity still so stupid and ignorant and cruel to people who just want to love who they love and be themselves? What good does it do us as a society to make other people's lives painful and scary and hard? I always thing of how Shane was so terrified to even tell his parents who love him, and this is all because of how society teaches us that queerness is wrong.
I'd love to better understand the world we live in.

DISCUSSION 🗣️ For those who think Shane and llya clean their own houses or etc
I see in fanfics and etc that people think that Shane and Ilya are cleaning their houses or cooking their own meals or etc:
https://ottawacitizen.com/ottawa-senators/i-have-a-chef-at-home-senators-tim-stutzle-skips-brady-tkachuk-dinner-night-before-big-return
One of the Ottawa Senators' forwards (the team Brady Tkachuk left), Tim said "I have a chef at home" as a funny way of saying that no way in hell would he meet up with Brady (who, in short, is a MAGA asshole who treated the team like shit). Then Tim Stützle's private chef posted:

Also, if any of you are hockey fans, the whole Sens game last night was incredible. The Tkachuk signs and chants were so funny.

DISCUSSION 🗣️ Do you have a favorite obscure dialog line from season 1?
Maybe a line that seems off-kilter, slightly bizarre.
One of mine is “I have no problem with sweaty blurs.”

Season 1 🏒 Heated Rivalry Marathon: In Cineplex Theatres across Canada November 8, 2026
Want to watch HR on the biggest screen possible? You're in luck!
Cineplex is showing a Heated Rivalry marathon on November 8 in theatres across Canada.
It's being reported that episodes 1-6 will be shown separately on November 6, but outside of dates Cineplex doesn't have any further info. Currently, Cineplex has the Coming Soon poster listed on their website, but there is no link to purchase, and I tried setting a variety of theatres in my area and nothing is listed on either date yet. Unless you want to see Cat in the Hat too 😂
Keep your eye on the link to get tickets when they are released ✌️
*It seems the image didn't transfer well from desktop to mobile, it's a bit blurry, sorry!

🔥 Heated Rivalry (Book 2) HR audiobook taken down?
Not sure if this has been mentioned on here yet but I noticed on audible that the heated rivalry English language audiobook has been delisted. With the recent redubbing of Game Changer, could that mean that we’ll be getting a Cooper North narration of Heated Rivalry very soon?

MERCH👕 Official Province of Canada fleece shipping notification received!
I know lots of people have been asking about the fleece shipping and saying that no one’s heard anything since the “shipping soon” email on October 1st. But I just received a push notification from Shopify (the “Shop” app) saying that a label has been created for my fleece, so it’s officially just short of being on its way! Did anyone else get theirs?

Season 2 🥅 I’ve seen left and right that S2 has the same budget as S1 and I’m happy because
they will look at season 2 with the same precision as season 1 went. I’ve seen so many tv shows with fantastic season 1 and a mid to low season 2 after.
Reasons as to why it works:
• They will obviously look at the story and decide which scenes/plotlines/subplot will work and thus not add not any unnecessary scenes to fluff up the minutes. As evidenced by season 1, every scene worked right.
• Bigger budget can also mean new lighting, grander scale of locations, thus losing the vibe of season 1. For some shows it works in favor of it. Like Game of Thrones because you need to expand the scope. But small budget means that they choose the set deliberately and get much more out of it. We can’t forget the Russian monologue in that place. It’s such a simple place but it took on a different level when combined with good script.
• More money also means more people to answer to the detriment of the storyline or the cast.
And I can keep going and going on as why it should not. Do you think the same as me and if not, tell me why?

DISCUSSION 🗣️ Shane’s Sponsorships
I grew up casually with hockey, as you do in Canada, and I’ve been following it a bit more closely in the past couple of years thanks to a mixture of living in a city where NHL games are more affordable than Montreal and Heated Rivalry (of course!).
Can a more involved fan point out to me a recent (or HR timeline compliant) real-world equivalent of Shane’s sponsorships? Like good brands. Because all I see on my feeds right now is Suzuki advertising an insurance company, or Demidov selling an obscure brand of underwear, and I’m just wondering how common Shane’s situation would be. I think I can remember PK Subban lending his face to charity campaigns as well, but the only athlete I remember ever seeing in an actually lucrative ad was an Olympic diver for McDonald’s.
(Guess where I grew up 😂)
