My 14-month-old daughter has mild-moderate unilateral hearing loss (normal hearing in her left ear). She’s worn a hearing aid since 4 months old, and both her audiologist and doctor emphasize how important it is for her brain to learn to process sound from both sides.
We’ve gone through periods of consistency, but now that she’s a full-on toddler, keeping it in is a STRUGGLE. And every time we struggle, my doubts creep back in.
What if it’s squeaking? Too loud? Uncomfortable?
This morning, I swear I could hear a constant rustling/static coming from it, plus the occasional screech. I actually put it in my own ear to try to understand her experience—I know, I know, the audiologist warned me it’d sound extremely loud to me, and it did. Every tiny sound was amplified, but there was also this constant background noise. Kind of like robotic static.
Is that normal? Is it only noticeable because I have typical hearing? Or is this why she fights wearing it?
She’s only 14 months old, so she can’t really tell me. We’ve been teaching her ASL, and this morning when I put it in, she signed HURT. That broke my heart a little. But she’s still learning that sign and sometimes uses it for things she just doesn’t like. (Plus, she actually did hurt that ear in a fall yesterday. So who knows?)
I know I’m overthinking this. But being a hearing parent trying to make the right choices for a baby with hearing loss is hard. The specialists say the hearing aid is the right choice, and I want to trust them. But I can’t shake the worry that I’m making her wear something uncomfortable when she seems to hear so well without it.
For those with mild hearing loss who wear hearing aids: What do they actually sound and feel like to you? I just want to understand what my daughter might be experiencing.
