NEWBIE Got my first guitar

Post image
87 Upvotes

My coworker had an old guitar he was ready to get off his hands so I picked it up from him today. I know nothing about guitars and which ones are good or bad, but I wanted something where I didn’t have to invest a bunch of money in the case that I end up not liking it. Excited to try this bad boy out and start learning!

Beginner tips/advice appreciated!

QUESTION What tuning is this?

Post image
426 Upvotes

I recently started playing guitar a few months ago and messed around with some tuning. Since then I’ve made this one that I like and made a few songs with. However I was wondering if this is even a real tuning and if so, what would it be called? I’d like to know so I don’t have to use this app anymore…

So I have been playing acoustic guitar for about 6 months and I'm thinking of buying an electric guitar, so is a telecaster good for a beginner or are there any better recommendations?

QUESTION P90 pickups sound

I don't have a guitar with P90s but I want one. I have guitars with single coils and humbuckers. I am looking at Yamaha Revstar or Gibson Les Paul Special. I mostly play hard rock and metal. I don't need another humbucker guitar because that's the majority of my gear. I don't like the hum but I have noise gates.

Can you describe the sound of playing hard rock or metal with P90s? Convince me or deter me. Is it worth it? How bad is the hum with and without noise gate? Thanks!

QUESTION Guitar Staying in Tune for an Entire Show

• Upvotes

Saw Sugar last night and Bob Mould just mauled his Strat the whole night. His attack is ferocious but he played the same guitar the entire show and might have quickly checked the tuning once. How is that possible? What is done to guitars that pros use to keep them in tune for long periods of time? If I leave my guitars unplayed for a few days they are inevitably out of tune when I pick them up next!

EDIT: thanks for the comments, it was interesting to hear that Bob may not be as vicious in his attack as it looks! And he’s been doing this for a long time so he probably sneaks some tuning in quickly here and there to boot.

DISCUSSION What do y’all think about the new John 5 Ghost Telecaster?

Post image

I’ve seen many people talking down on it because of Fenders current shenanigans. And others saying that its mostly paying for the brand name and that the prices its not worth it because its made in Indonesia.
That there are better choices for the price, also not even a cheap gig bag included.

So my question is. What is a cool looking tele that you guys would recommend that would be suited for playing metal but also have the versatility to get some decent clean tones out of it.

Me personally after not being able to buy the first run of the US made i was disappointed. But this one i think looks just as awesome and from some of the reviews I have seen it sounds good too. Give that most of those ppl are using expensive equipment….

PLAY Rhiannon - fleetwood mac guitar loop. Turns out lead guitar is just chords.

Really happy with my playing and understanding of the pentatonic scale recently. I feel like I was stuck on just knowing the scale up until a month or so ago. Playing it, but constantly playing the same riffs. Cool ones, but nothing new.

Then I saw a few videos on how good lead is just rhythm. Didn't take long for that to click, ever since then i've found playing 'lead' a lot easier. I feel more connected with intervals, like my fingers are getting closer to the sound in my head.

I like to challenge myself to play the vocals from songs. Its so easy for me to slip away from the actual melody (as you can hear) but i try and use the vocals as guard rails to force me to learn/explore as opposed to playing what feels comfortable (too guitary).

GEAR Love my Japanese Telecaster, but...

Context: 55 year old, basement solo player here. 40+ years of semi-focused noodling. Decent at some things, with holes as would be expected. Not a dentist, since I play (solo) all the time... but tongue-in-cheek, I likely might be if I had access to the money.

OK, I picked up a MIJ Telecaster a few years ago and absolutely love it. Can't put it down once I starts playing. I recently tried an American telecaster and realized my MIJ bridge pickup is anemic. So, I want to replace the pickups.

(I already have a HSS Strat so already have access to something will real bite... and am not looking to turn the telecaster into something it is not.) Was thinking of this Fender Ultra Noiseless Vintage set: https://www.solomusicgear.com/product/fender-ultra-noiseless-vintage-telecaster-pickup-set/

Knowing the community will know what to do... does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks in advance.
