Discussion 25 years I’ve been waiting for this moment.
IT HAPPENED. I’m still shaking. I’ve been waiting for this moment for almost 25 years, and I honestly don’t have the words to explain what it means to me.
Their music helped save my life during the most traumatic period of it. I spent what felt like an eternity practically living at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, watching my dad slowly die from non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
I still remember waiting for him to go into surgery for a stent to be placed in his brain so he could receive more aggressive treatment. We were talking about how he was going to help me with my homework. Then everything changed. A surgical complication caused irreversible damage, and he went into a coma for almost a month.
Going from talking with my dad, to watching him wake up confused and barely able to speak or understand, to seeing him slip back into a coma and eventually die was the worst experience of my life. It felt like I lived in that hospital for years, but it was only about two months.
I was just a kid trying to make sense of something devastating. Green Day became my escape. Their music helped me survive days I didn’t know how I would get through. My family and best friends helped me, too—you know who you are. I will always be grateful for the people who stood beside me, reminded me that life was still worth living, and helped me keep going.
Green Day’s music and the people who loved me helped me survive a time I never thought I would get through.
For almost 25 years, meeting Green Day, telling them my story, and thanking them for helping save my life has been one of my biggest dreams. I’ve even joked that it was the one thing I needed to do before I could die.
I got to tell Billie Joe the story I’ve been rehearsing in my head since I was 15. I’ve imagined that moment so many times, wondering what I would say if I ever had the chance to explain what his music meant to me.
Billie Joe also lost his dad to cancer as a child, so knowing his story helped me feel less alone in mine. Being able to share my experience with someone whose music helped me survive my own loss is something I can’t fully put into words.
He genuinely listened. He thanked me, told me my story meant the world to him, and said he understood what I had been through.
I was shaking so badly that he told me to try to hold still so he could make the signature look nice. Haha.
Something about this moment feels like a chapter of my life has come full circle. I can’t change what happened to my dad, and I can’t undo the trauma or the pain. But I finally got to say the words I’ve carried since I was a kid.
Now, I feel like I can finally start healing in a different way.
I’m taking my damn life back.
This was never just about meeting a famous band. It was about thanking the music that helped me survive losing my dad. It was about sharing a story I’ve carried for almost 25 years. It was about finally telling the person behind that music how much it mattered to me.
