This is not an anti-cyclist rant. I am a long time cycle commuter who is overjoyed the new infrastructure has so many people cycling into the city for work and leisure.
However, I have noticed a lot of whom I presume are newer cyclists are clearly not all that used to cycling in particularly as it gets darker and wetter. For the second morning in a row I have had a very near miss with cyclist going into the back of me while on my bike. Today it was when I was waiting for a pedestrian to cross a zebra crossing and yesterday it was when waiting at a redlight where there was oncoming traffic (I couldn't have jumped the red if I wanted to and if I hadn't been there the guy likely would have been struck by a car).
We live in a golden age of cycle commuting right now which is amazing. Consumer bikes have had some big advances over the past few years which means you can get really amazing secondhand bikes for pennies. I think a lot of people have become really excited in their new found cycling commute (which is great) bought an amazing and quick bike on Facebook Marketplace and likely bought a bit too much bike for their skill levels to be totally honest.
It is great that you have a bike that can absolutely cook down the south city cycle way and I wholesale encourage people to do that on a sunny afternoon but a dark, wet, rush hour ride is not the time you can safely fly into the city at top speed.
The person who almost went into the back of me today at the zebra crossing was clearly absolutely flying on her bike and simply not paying attention and was WAY overriding her skill level. You need to slow it down and take it easy. Even if you have a high performance bike you don't need to push it that far all the time. A big part of developing skill as cyclist is knowing when you can really open it up.
Also the new infrastructure is great but it is more than bit schizophrenic in its design. You have to get used to it before you try to push the sppeds. It treats cyclists like vehicles (which they are) but also designs the infrastructure like they are pedestrians and in a way they would NEVER do for cars. For example from Stockwell street to Queens Park the south city cycle way has 34 zebra crossings while cars have exactly 0. If you proposed putting 34 zebra crossing in a two mile stretch of road for cars you would be branded insane and it would be seen as unsafe and nonsensical. It is for bikes too but obviously the same level of care and attention isn't given to the design.

Here is some informative investigation regarding the situation. It ain't the Muslim brotherhood in cahoots with "antifa" as the big eyed, paranoid schizo right keep banging on about. It's the house of Saud, the same folks who brought you 9/11!

Hello!
Heading in for a big operation soon and although odds are low I want to make sure ive got everything in order.
Does anyone have any recommendations of where to get a will written? Looking for a place people have had good experience with - preferably efficient and dont try to upsell me other things
Ive heard people mention previously some places will do it for a charity donation - not sure if this is still a thing but if anyone knows please let me know :) alternatively if you feel comfortable sharing what you paid for one please let me know.
City centre/east end preferred. Thanks in advance :)

I lost my grey coat with my passport and earbuds last night/this morning. I think I last had it at braeside street bust stop on maryhill road, fair chance that I left it on the 61 as well. Thought I would check here on the slim chance that it gets found.

Hey there
This is very random but it's been bugging me that I can't remember or find ant trace of this specific shop having ever existed.
I stayed in Glasgow for a while in 2015 and one day went to the botanical Gardens (beautiful!) I swear it was around that area, possibly across the road, there was a shop that sold whisky, liquers and all sorts on tap in large glass dispensers, like a science laboratory. Possibly did vinegars and things too but I don't remember. The lady was lovely and I left with chunky square bottles of various booze for gifts for people, which she wrote on in white pen.
The other place that seems to have vanished was a lovely chocolate shop i found. I recall it was off one of the bigger shopping streets in the city centre, in a smaller shopping mall. I remember it being possibly on the top floor, tucked away a bit, with a pick your own chocolate counter. Some of the most delicious chocolates I've ever had!
If anyone can enlighten me, thank you!

Hi folks, any tips for a private function room I could book for a work Traitors night (social board game essentially) with approx 15-20 people? Ideally deposit only and with a bar, not too pricey.
Finding it hard to book where it’s quiet enough for a big board game, cheap/free to book, will accept 15/20 people. Tried DRAM! But they won’t take at the time we want, tried Waxy O’Connors but the music is too loud, etc etc
Any advice hugely appreciated!

I live at the blythswood court flats and I’ve just started driving. Am on a waiting list for a parking space and will also pay for a resident permit once I’ve done a bit of admin.
In the meantime, there are parking spaces under the building (if you go past the Marriott and through the barrier into the underground bit). There’s no signage saying you can’t park there, just that you can only park in marked bays.
Does anyone know if there’s any reason I can’t park my car here for the time being? The barrier is manned but they always let me/other people in.
Sorry for another parking question. Living in the city centre is hectic. Thanks.

I’d usually be the last person to support anti business policies but McGills have an utter brass neck to make demands against our right to choose a public bus service. They’re licensed and that license has a limited duration and their appalling service, poor reliability and rude drivers have earned them zero right to dictate our future bus ownership model. They can get on board with the cap and the limits of future licensing or they can get extinct. A Lothian buses model for Glasgow would make all of our lives better.

Hi! Random question but the garlic and chilli sauce equivalents you can buy out of supermarkets suck! I bought a meal from Kurdish Street Food in Southside and the sauces were great! Where do takeaways get them? I appreciate they also make them themselves! Thanks

We live on the 3rd floor in a tenement, the bathroom faces south, the window is nearly always tilted, there are quite a few plants there.
I have often noticed ladybirds in the bathroom over the last couple of years, but there are now 5 huddles together for 3 days, and another few visiting (Monday evening there were 9 in all).
It's very sweet and we feel deeply honoured but it's kind of weird (none of the neighbours had more than one visiting).

EDIT: Now captures neighbouring council areas for wider route planning.
I'm generally interested in Glasgow's travel infrastructure, with cycling/active travel being one of growing key modes for people.
Recently I noticed that a change in national funding mechanism (multi-year --> year-by-year) forced a shrinking of the grand plans for Glasgow's cycling network in the near term.
But I found it difficult to work out what this really meant for accessing protected cycling infrastructure i.e. not a painted strip on the side of the road where cars just park without consequence.
So here it is mapped out:
https://duncanci.github.io/glasgow-cycle-map/
Mega props to u/Correct-Audience-421 for the excellent work they have done mapping out the delivery status of GCC's cycle routes - I've incorporated their work in this. Some other things worth noting:
Goes without saying but always do check your route before setting off - this is just a support tool.
Have a play if you're into this sort of thing, and let me know if you have any feedback for making it more insightful - there will be mistakes. I'll be sure to let Claude know promptly hehe

Hey
I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations, I’ve damaged one of my rings, it’s something my granny handed down to me. It needs the stones resetting and the ring needs resizing.
Is there anywhere in Glasgow that people would recommend?
Thanks in advance 😊

Hi everyone!
We're looking for some new players to join our friendly, ladies' netball group in the West End of Glasgow.
It's purely recreational, with a relaxed approach to the rules, so absolutely no experience or particular fitness level needed! We have a mix of ages and abilities, and it's as much about the social side as the netball.
We play on Tuesday evenings, so if you fancy coming along or would like some more details, just drop me a message! 😊

Trying to get my kids in school, we moved to Dowanhill area mid September. The council is out as far as Govan for the S4 and St Thomas Aquinas for the S1. No options for keeping them together yet, council doesn’t sound hopeful (she has been VERY kind and helpful, nothing at all against her).
Do I hold out for getting them in the same school? Or is that just not going to happen? We’re at 4+ weeks out of school, at some point they’ve missed the whole term.
Once they are eventually in wherever they end up, if we put back in for a local school, is there any way of finding out where we have a shot at getting in? I’d hate to put in for Hyndland or Hillhead and end up staying at Govan when we could have got a spot for the S4 at St Thomas Aquinas.
The process seems to make it basically pointless to buy a house based on catchment. Or, you have to buy the house before the kid starts primary school.
