Announcement 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom

Hey everybody! Randy here, the sub's resident OEM parts guy. It’s been a little while since I’ve popped by, but I’m back with some really good stuff to share.

For those who don’t know me, I’m the dude from Randy’s OEM Guitar Parts and lead guitar tech with Norlin.

Recently we refurbished a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom and actually recorded everything. We remixed 2.5 hours of work into a 19 minute video of pure Gibson related-information straight from industry insiders. Think Science Channel's How It’s Made meets VH1’s Pop-Up Video, but instead of showing a music video or building a toaster, we’re deep diving into a vintage Gibson guitar from the Norlin era.

Thanks for taking a look and I hope you enjoy our video!

I got this guitar as a gift from my grandparents 35 years ago. It's a 1991 Les Paul Custom Plus Heritage Cherry Sunburst. I remember opening the brown case with the hot pink plush interior and seeing it for the first time.

Used to have an Epiphone Les Paul Custom in Alpine White as a kid that sadly suffered a broken head stock. 20 years later, finally replaced it.

Hi all!

Just wanted to share photos of my first Gibson Guitar.

It's a 1979 Les Paul Standard

As you can see it's obviously been loved by the previous owner/owners and it's definitely got a history.

It has a set of Seymour Duncan's in it and all the pots have been changed for CTS 500k new pots.

It plays awesome and sounds awesome!

Always loved the norlin era guitars (dream is a mid 70s custom) so this guitar is the perfect one for my first Gibson!

I might get a set of the Gibson 1968 T Top replicas to put in it as I love that T Top sound, but for now it's perfect as is for me!

Let me know what you think!

Cheers

NGD My Most Recent Acquisition: 2008 Gibson Les Paul Studio (Wine Red)

My birthday guitar safari a couple weeks ago was a bust, and it left a guitar-sized hole in my heart.

I went snooping around at local shops and this beauty caught my eye!

This is a 2008 Gibson Les Paul Studio in wine red. It’s all stock and included a hardshell case. I paid $800 plus tax for it, and I couldn’t be happier.

How’d I do?

Cheers

This is my one and only electric guitar, a Les Paul Studio from 2024 with an absolutely stunning Blueberry Burst finish. I'd had my eyes on a blueberry Les Paul since I had started playing more and more on my own, and finally I decided to pull the trigger and trade both of my Fender electrics for one solid guitar that could be with me throughout my playing journey.

Since I've only had it for less than a day I can't even really talk about what there is that I do or do not like...all I can say is that playing it really feels like a luxury and it's something that I feel really speaks to me. The burstbucker pro pups are just the right kind of brighter PAF-style sound that I like, the weight of the body and balance of the guitar suits me as a seated player more than other LP styles I've tried so far, thanks to the chambered body I'd say. And obviously I can't get over the finish.

I think for any single guitar I'd tell myself I'm keeping for eternity, this one just has to be the one. I think I made a pretty solid choice.

Help Gibson Decision Time!

So I have recently sold a lot of Pokémon cards I had been collecting to fund a Gibson. Now because it is such a lot of money I want to make sure I do it right. This is the one I love. Is it a good choice to spend £2000+ on this one?

NGD NGD - How you think I did on this 2008 SG Standard case queen?

So I’ve been working on refinishing an SG and was searching around for a few parts. This 2008 SG Standard popped up right when I was on there looking. Looked immaculate and they were asking $800🤯. Price seemed on the edge of being a little too good, so it had my scam filter up, but it just turned out to be a really nice lady who bought the guitar in Nashville in ‘08 hoping to learn and never did.

The frets were tarnished, strings were rusty, but the body essentially didn’t have a scratch on it. I polished frets, new strings, setup and went through everything and it seems to be all original. The pickguard and backplate had definitley never been off. Sounds good plays great what else could you ask for, for $800 🤷‍♂️

Help The problem with the faded number on the Gibson Les Paul Traditional

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey guys!

I’ve come across a 2009 Gibson Les Paul Traditional, but there’s a bit of a catch.

Could you tell me what the implications might be if the serial number has been rubbed off? Why would someone do that in the first place? What are they trying to hide? The seller claims it was done by the previous owner - though it’s unclear why.

Does this look like an authentic guitar? Is it worth pursuing and looking into further? It’s the cheapest Gibson Les Paul listing in my country. What do you think? I’d be happy to hear your opinions! Thanks!

I've been eyeing the Les Paul Modern Figured for a few months now and I finally pulled the trigger. This thing is so gorgeous and sounds amazing! I perused different sites until I found this one on zzounds.com with the perfect top, and it surpassed my expectations from the photos!

Help Which Finish is This?

Post image
70 Upvotes

Which finish does this ‘05 LP Faded have? My understanding is that these guitars only came in three finishes at the time, but I’m just not sure which one this is. Options are Heritage Cherry, Honey Burst, or Tobacco burst. What do you all think?

UPDATE: As suggested by a number of folks, I popped the neck pickup off and checked it out. Probably most of you (myself included) will be surprised to hear that this is the Tobacco Burst finish. I agree with nearly all the commenters that it definitely doesn’t look like Tobacco, but that’s what it is. Also to touch on the lighting comments, the picture I posted is a pretty fair representation of how it looks in the room. So it definitely doesn’t look darker in person. Just Gibson things I guess. Haha

Thanks to everyone that commented! Now we know. 😂

So technically this isn't new gear day. I have had this guitar for a couple months but I can't get over the way it feels im my hands. I've had many guitars over the years but there's something special about this one.

I'd been looking for a 335 and saw this one on Reverb. 2012 Memphis built custom 335 dot.

The thing rings like a bell and the horrible pictures don't do the top justice! Neck is super slim, and I'mnormally a chunky neck type of guy but it feels great in the hand.

Just enough play wear and aging as well to feel played in.

Going to enjoy banging out some britpop on this tonight!

Cheers.

Help SG with P90s and trapezoid inlays

The title pretty much says is. Is there a production model available that has both the P90s and the trapezoid inlays? Gibson or Epiphone.
All the SGs I’ve seen or found online either have the humbuckers, or come with the dot fret markers.
Obviously the frets are just aesthetic but I just can’t get behind the dot markers. It just looks cheap to me.

I’d (almost) always want to demo any guitar before I bought it so it’s not just a glorified plank, but there’s no point hunting if she doesn’t exist
