Game Discussion Sack the new UI Designer! I am about to give up on this game which now seems to be run by a team of interns. Bad game mechanic changes, random UI button changes, main modes buried in menus, etc etc: WTF is happening?!

Even what might seem simple changes like - Suddenly at the end of a competitive game the 'RETURN TO PREVIOUS' screen big green button is 'PLAY AGAIN', literally the opposite function ... already caused me and others grief who wanted to go do something else then caught in another duel off guard! And as for moving other furniture around, burying Royale, endless black screens, ffs are they deliberately trying to kill the game off? Sure change is inevitable but all in a few days, complete redesigns happening live - have they never heard of a little thing called USER TESTING or SANDBOXING?!?!

Previously I believe it was just gold and lower. Excited to have this tool in Master division too! It doesn't always find something new to me but seems pretty helpful.

Game Discussion What was the most "stereotypical" location you've ever gotten in your own country?

• Upvotes

As most people on Reddit know these days, the United States exemplifies a profound, tragic paradox in terms of its landscape. The natural environment has almost unparalleled diversity, and yet so many of our cities, particularly medium-sized ones, look so similar to one another. Many of them are packed with arterial roads lined with strip malls, chain restaurants, and big-box stores.

A while back I was playing the World mode and received a location that was total Americana. You had a mountainous prairie-adjacent landscape visible on the horizon, the sort that explorers (for all their moral faults) wrote entire books about back in the day. It looks gorgeous, and it doesn't hurt that in the most recent imagery (dated June 2026), the mountains are greener as though they actually got some much-needed rain.

And yet, closer to the camera, you're on a 6-lane "stroad" choked with traffic. It doesn't matter that you're not physically there; you can basically hear the deafening sounds of dozens of engines, a few of which don't have mufflers. You can essentially taste the exhaust. The mountains are only a couple miles away as the crow flies, but they might as well be on another planet.

Here's the location if anyone is curious.

Game Discussion Why the negative reception towards HorrorGuessr?

I just started getting into geoguessr last week & im really enjoying the game. I was really surprised to see this new limited time mode & I was genuinely really impressed with what the devs put together on this one. I come from games like cs that gets little to no attention from the developers so seeing something like this is just really refreshing. I was so confused when i checked this subreddit & not only is there barely anyone talking about it but under the thread related to this new mode there’s nothing but ppl complaining about the new ui in the comment section. Am I missing something?

Okay so on the iPad the music doesn’t change at all when you’re getting down to the last ten seconds and there is no change in appearance of the screen. As compared to the desktop where it flashes red and the music changes! This just killed me so hard in the daily challenge lol. DEVS PLZ FIX THX.

Game Discussion I made a free site to practice the regions of every country (helps with region guessing)

I often get the country right in GeoGuessr but miss the region, so I built a site to practice that.

You pick a country, get a blank map and type its provinces, states or regions from memory. Each correct answer fills in on the map.

It also has a flag catalogue sorted by country: for each one you’ll find its current flag, its old flags and the flags of its regions and cities. That’s more than 24,000 flags in total.

It's called Geotaria — link in the comments.

Game Discussion Solving the HorrorGuessr ARG Spoiler

Wanted to share the solution to the mini ARG in the new horrorguessr mode out today; access it here:

https://www.geoguessr.com/horrorguessr

Unfortunately, I didn't take many screenshots, and it seems that the ARG is tied once per account. I'm pretty sure you need a GeoGuessr account first to activate the ARG, else the riddle won't appear.

Steps

  • (Probably optional) When you first visit the page on a GeoGuessr account, there should be a little twinkle-like object that appears. Clicking it before it disappears reveals a short riddle
  • Go to the horrorguessr page and inspect element using right-click -> inspect element
    • You can also Ctrl + Shift + I (Command + Option + I on Mac)
  • Go to the console and type window.yes() into the input bar after the first dialogue appears
  • Afterwards, a series of riddles will appear. These are the answers to the riddles, in sequence, type the following into the console input after each riddle finishes displaying:
  1. spider
  2. nightmare
  3. mirror
  4. fire
  5. nightshade
  • After answering all the riddles correctly, the page will make you choose between two options of helping some devil. I believe both options will give different rewards. I chose not to help the devil/monster/whatever it is and got the angel halo reward below.
Screen after completing the riddle
Reward for selecting "I will not bow to you"
angel halo
Reward for selecting "Your will is my command"

Details

  • When you first visit the page on a GeoGuessr account, there should be a little twinkle-like object that appears. Clicking it before it disappears reveals a short riddle
    • Can't remember the exact details of the riddles, but the 3 main parts were "hidden in the sewer", "right cursor to inspect", and "twelfth function"
  • I used to do Capture the Flag competitions, so "right cursor to inspect" and "hidden in the sewer" told me that it's probably something to do with the console when you inspect element on the page
  • When you do so, the first part of the riddle shows up, which led me to check which part of the code the riddle was called from. I used a conditional breakpoint for this in the code, but there are probably many other simpler ways.
  • After I found the source code, I fed it into AI to ask it to identify the twelfth function, which led me to the code running the riddle, as well as the answers.

Hope this helped some people; sorry I wasn't able to get many screenshots of what to do, and do let me know if I got any details wrong.

Game Discussion Geo guess railway stations

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

Street View almost never makes it onto a railway platform, but stations are full of clues. So we built a free game around them. You get a photo of a real station with the signs blurred and pin it on the map. You can play the world, a continent or a single country, so it works for practicing one region too. Which clues do you look for at a station? And does it feel too easy or too hard?

Link in the comments.

So now, new UI update we can't talk while searching 🔎 a game in team duels? What the point, last UI update made us impossible to see which mode ur mate selected, and now this ? Do you make test before UI deployment?

I don't understand...

Game Discussion All Platinum medals but Explorer progress bar isn't full?

Post image
52 Upvotes

I've completed all countries in GeoGuessr, and every country is checked off in the list below, but my Explorer progress bar still isn't completely full. I also have 116 Platinum medals, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something else that counts toward Explorer progress, or if this is just a bug.

Has anyone else experienced this or knows what I'm missing?

Thanks!

Game Discussion Geo guess random photos from Wikipedia

Street View and photo spheres are great, but they're often bound to roads. Since there are so many publicly available images with location metadata, I thought it would be fun to make them guessable. The variety is honestly the best part! There are regions of the world that are not and probably never will be on Street View. Images can potentially be anywhere in the world. The difficulty level varies greatly, sometimes it's easy and sometimes it's brutal, but it's actually refreshing and feels completely different.

Not trying to make this a promo post, I just thought people here might enjoy a different flavor of geoguessing. I create this out of fun as a hobby project. You can try it out https://mediaguesser.com/try

Would love to hear how the difficulty feels compared to regular Street View rounds. I am still figuring out which images to filter out and which are okay guessable.

Tech Help What happens when you don't play competitive for a week?

Hi 🖖

I'm on track to get promoted to the next division this week. Next week, I will not have time for playing competitive. I might still play the daily challenge on my mobile, though. What will happen to the new division, will it be held or will I get demoted?

Game Discussion Fell from 850 to 730 ELO in Master 2 mostly due to regional guesses. How do you guys actually grind region guessing?

Title pretty much says it all. Just wondering what your process is for getting better at region guessing . Notes, Plonk It, or just raw hours?

Game Discussion Competitive incentivizes players NOT to play the game

Why am I incentivized to NOT play the game?

Last week I had been demoted from Master IV down to Gold I, where I started beating pretty much everyone who crossed my path. This gave me a really high ELO for the group and got me promoted right back into Master IV this week, where I'm placed 3rd. Then life gets busy and I find myself logging in on a Thursday night, expecting to be low in the group and in desperate need of points. Imagine my surprise when I find that I'm STILL sitting in 3rd place. I've done nothing all week. Played only TWO games. Everyone below me is playing tons and tons of games, and just losing points and falling further below me. So it appears that playing games mostly loses points. The more you play, the more points you lose. Obviously this incentivizes not playing! I know they added the decay feature to check this and punish people. But I don't think it's the right answer. The system punishes people who don't play a tiny bit, but punishes people who play even more. I don't know what the solution is. Someone here was saying that the maps will get refreshed here soon. I think that sounds great, cuz I don't really enjoy sweating over pictures of dirt and leaves, which is what you get on these Master/Champion rural maps. I always felt like losing to someone rated above you should not cost any points. Why can't it be this: Lose to someone below you, lose points. Beat someone above you, win points. But lose to people rated above you, nothing happens. You shouldn't be punished for losing to someone with more skill.

TLDR, I went down into a lower group, farmed a bunch of ELO against people who aren't as good as me, then came back into the higher group and coasted on the points I farmed without needing to play at all. They try to scare me with decay, but it's not that scary. Playing and losing is more dangerous for points. So I don't play. Really seems broken to me. But I don't know what the answer is.
