Linux 1 Month Update: Great design, awesome Linux performance

After one month, all I can say is "FANTASTIC". After setting up a good fan and power configuration on Linux, everything started working well as intended, without pushing the fans too hard or heating up. This laptop is FIRE, portable, and the design is super cool.

Yes it's still going!

  • Finished the A side and as you can see the iPad Air fits (barely). One interesting find: when hooked to a laptop, this iPad lasts a lot shorter than the actual laptop (tbf it's a panther lake). Probably need some optimization on battery and data transfer...
  • Been working with former Nokia engineers on the designs. Need a lot work in detailing the design.
  • During testing the cam thing that pushes the slider on the A side cracks a lot, exploring new ideas.
  • This project's scope is a lot larger than I first thought. Currently thinking about making keyboard as a separate thing first, then go for the laptop.

If you're interested, wants printable files, or just wanna chat, come join thte channel! (honestly I dont know how to use Discord, but it seems the server got set up alright? Let me know how I should make it better)

the bottom right screw is loose and can't be tightened, so now the keyboard is sticking out. I've reached out to support already since this is an out-of-the-box issue, but do you guys have any troubleshooting tips for this?

Community Support Broken fingerprint reader/power button

Post image
15 Upvotes

Not really sure how this happened but the fingerprint reader seems to have cracked and as a result my computer is having its power button continuously pressed. I will open up the computer later but not really sure how to fix this (I don't mind disabling the button so long as there is another way to turn it on).

Question ThinkPad T14 Gen 2/3 AMD vs Framework Laptop 12 — Which is better for a student who values repairability and Linux?

Thumbnail
4 Upvotes

I'm a student in Malta looking for a reliable laptop for school that will ideally last me at least 5 years.

I've narrowed my choices down to three laptops:

- ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 AMD — Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U, preferably 16GB RAM

- ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 AMD — Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U, preferably 16GB RAM

- Framework Laptop 12 DIY — Intel Core i3-1315U, 16GB RAM

My original budget was €400 including shipping, but I'm considering whether spending significantly more on a Framework would be worthwhile in the long run.

My priorities:

- Repairability: I want to be able to replace components myself rather than buy another laptop when something breaks.

- Longevity: Ideally, I'd like to keep the laptop for 5–7 years or longer.

- Linux compatibility: I'm planning to use CachyOS or another Arch-based distribution, although I'm also interested in experimenting with FreeBSD.

- Battery life: I'll be commuting to school and need something that can last through several hours of classes.

- Performance: Mostly Obsidian, PDFs, browsing, programming, studying and occasional light gaming.

- Portability: I'll be carrying it to school almost every day.

- Cost: I'm happy to buy used or refurbished, including laptops missing an SSD or charger, provided there is no significant exterior damage or serious motherboard issue.

The T14 Gen 2 AMD appeals to me because it's relatively affordable and still has upgradeable RAM and Wi-Fi.

The T14 Gen 3 AMD offers better performance, integrated graphics and a 16:10 display, but the soldered RAM and Wi-Fi concern me.

The Framework 12 seems like the best choice for repairability and future upgrades, but a complete DIY configuration would cost substantially more than a used ThinkPad.

My questions:

  1. Is the Framework's repairability worth paying roughly twice as much as a used T14?

  2. Between the T14 Gen 2 and Gen 3 AMD, which would you choose for long-term reliability?

  3. How easy and affordable is it to find replacement parts for these ThinkPads?

  4. Which has the best Linux compatibility, particularly with CachyOS or Arch?

  5. Are there any known problems with these models that I should look out for when buying used?

  6. Would you recommend another laptop with better repairability and value?

I'm also open to doing basic repairs and upgrades myself.

I'd appreciate advice from people who have owned these laptops, particularly regarding long-term durability, battery life and the actual cost of maintaining them.

Thanks!

Community Support Overheating issues with my Framework 16. How do I diagnose what to fix?

Hello! My Framework 16 is having what I'm pretty sure are overheating issues. It's generally hot, and has a jittery, stuttery performance when gaming. I cleaned out the fans, but that didn't solve the issue. I'm looking at the heatsink and thermal paste, but am unsure how best to figure out what the issue is. Does anyone have any suggestions on how best to diagnose the issue and figure out what needs fixing? Thank you!

Linux FW 13 Pro - Ubuntu - Sleep issues ?

I'll be receiving my FW13 Pro next week and I plan to install Ubuntu on it (most likely 26.10).

Currently I have a Dell XPS 13 Plus from 2022 and I very frequently run into suspend / resume issues. This has been the case on 24.04, 26.04, and 26.10.

Is there a risk I'll have the same problem with my Framework?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Question Privacy Screen Damage Concerns

I am looking for feedback from people who have installed any of the recommended privacy screens/films on their 13. Bonus points if it is a 13pro. I have ordered a 13 pro and am considering installing a privacy screen. I am a big fan of the filtered screens for a wide range of reasons. That being said, I have had some laptops where the additional screens have worked perfectly without issue, and others where the additional film has caused the keyboard to leave permanent damage and rub against the screen. I have already thumbed through other posts and see lots of opinions and speculation, but not a lot on actual user experience and outcomes.

Would love to hear from folk who have actively installed such a screen or film, and have used it over a sufficient amount of time to provide a reliable user experience and damage report.

Thank you all, and happy Frameworking!

edit: typo

Feedback Touchpad buttons are the only reason i cant buy framework.

Using my left thumb on the touchpad buttons above with my right index for the pointer is so comfortable, accurate, and fast. I can never go back to a button-less touchpad. Been legit waiting for years on a module with buttons.

Using tape is nothing like a button. Double tap to drag sucks and constantly triggers when i dont want it to (i tap fast during use). I cant play any fps games without buttons, and its just terrible to use. WHY did consumers put up with letting manufacturers remove this???

Please framework, do a survey or something to prove its a worthwhile endeavor. Im begging you.

Edit: for those focusing on me playing FPS games on a touchpad. There is a reason the Steam Controller, Steam Controller 2, and Steam Deck all have touchpads for aiming. It is totally viable and on par with a mouse if you have a seperate button to left-click.
