the bottom right screw is loose and can't be tightened, so now the keyboard is sticking out. I've reached out to support already since this is an out-of-the-box issue, but do you guys have any troubleshooting tips for this?

Linux 1 Month Update: Great design, awesome Linux performance

Post image

After one month, all I can say is "FANTASTIC". After setting up a good fan and power configuration on Linux, everything started working well as intended, without pushing the fans too hard or heating up. This laptop is FIRE, portable, and the design is super cool.

Yes it's still going!

  • Finished the A side and as you can see the iPad Air fits (barely). One interesting find: when hooked to a laptop, this iPad lasts a lot shorter than the actual laptop (tbf it's a panther lake). Probably need some optimization on battery and data transfer...
  • Been working with former Nokia engineers on the designs. Need a lot work in detailing the design.
  • During testing the cam thing that pushes the slider on the A side cracks a lot, exploring new ideas.
  • This project's scope is a lot larger than I first thought. Currently thinking about making keyboard as a separate thing first, then go for the laptop.
  • https://discord.gg/pzMvQ8cf Here's the discord server, if anyone interested! I'm not always on Reddit but I will be on Discord more. If you're interested, wants printable files, or just wanna chat, come join thte channel! (honestly I dont know how to use Discord, but it seems the server got set up alright? Let me know how I should make it better)

Community Support Broken fingerprint reader/power button

Post image
16 Upvotes

Not really sure how this happened but the fingerprint reader seems to have cracked and as a result my computer is having its power button continuously pressed. I will open up the computer later but not really sure how to fix this (I don't mind disabling the button so long as there is another way to turn it on).

Feedback 3 weeks with AI 9 HX 370

Post image
278 Upvotes

I've had the fw13pro with AI 9 HX 370 for a few weeks now and thought I'd add my experience to the pile of similar posts. Surprise, it's been great!

I really stressed over AMD vs Intel, but settled on AMD because faster ship times, RAM prices and availability, performance isn't that far off, battery life is still much better than what I'm used to, and it's been out longer so possibly fewer issues like this? Also, by the time I'm ready to upgrade Intel's next generation Nova Lake will be out, and even Panther Lakers will require a mainboard swap for that.

Several things that were causing friction on my Thinkpad just work out of the box. Zero driver issues. Sleep, fan (P1 sounded like a jet engine randomly, though Thinkfan mostly tamed it). Battery doesn't go from 45% to 5% in 10 minutes. I know, I needed a new battery. I got the P1 used, and every other week something else would go wrong with it, so having something reliable and stable has been a relief.

No issues with hinge waggle. Trackpad is second only to MBP, but a firmware update could fix that. It doesn't track if you start from the top, left, or right edge. Keyboard is best I've used on a laptop. I wish they hadn't hidden INS, Home/End, PageUp/PageDown behind a Fn key, and I wish it were QMK/VIA compatible to make fixing that easier, but Linux has keyd and heathens have autohotkey if they want to change that.

What else? I was worried the translucent orange bezel was going to be distracting or clash with the orange keys + USB slots, but instead it's just been fun. I can't wait to flip the lid every morning :)

Question ThinkPad T14 Gen 2/3 AMD vs Framework Laptop 12 — Which is better for a student who values repairability and Linux?

Thumbnail
5 Upvotes

I'm a student in Malta looking for a reliable laptop for school that will ideally last me at least 5 years.

I've narrowed my choices down to three laptops:

- ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 AMD — Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U, preferably 16GB RAM

- ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 AMD — Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U, preferably 16GB RAM

- Framework Laptop 12 DIY — Intel Core i3-1315U, 16GB RAM

My original budget was €400 including shipping, but I'm considering whether spending significantly more on a Framework would be worthwhile in the long run.

My priorities:

- Repairability: I want to be able to replace components myself rather than buy another laptop when something breaks.

- Longevity: Ideally, I'd like to keep the laptop for 5–7 years or longer.

- Linux compatibility: I'm planning to use CachyOS or another Arch-based distribution, although I'm also interested in experimenting with FreeBSD.

- Battery life: I'll be commuting to school and need something that can last through several hours of classes.

- Performance: Mostly Obsidian, PDFs, browsing, programming, studying and occasional light gaming.

- Portability: I'll be carrying it to school almost every day.

- Cost: I'm happy to buy used or refurbished, including laptops missing an SSD or charger, provided there is no significant exterior damage or serious motherboard issue.

The T14 Gen 2 AMD appeals to me because it's relatively affordable and still has upgradeable RAM and Wi-Fi.

The T14 Gen 3 AMD offers better performance, integrated graphics and a 16:10 display, but the soldered RAM and Wi-Fi concern me.

The Framework 12 seems like the best choice for repairability and future upgrades, but a complete DIY configuration would cost substantially more than a used ThinkPad.

My questions:

  1. Is the Framework's repairability worth paying roughly twice as much as a used T14?

  2. Between the T14 Gen 2 and Gen 3 AMD, which would you choose for long-term reliability?

  3. How easy and affordable is it to find replacement parts for these ThinkPads?

  4. Which has the best Linux compatibility, particularly with CachyOS or Arch?

  5. Are there any known problems with these models that I should look out for when buying used?

  6. Would you recommend another laptop with better repairability and value?

I'm also open to doing basic repairs and upgrades myself.

I'd appreciate advice from people who have owned these laptops, particularly regarding long-term durability, battery life and the actual cost of maintaining them.

Thanks!

Community Support Overheating issues with my Framework 16. How do I diagnose what to fix?

Hello! My Framework 16 is having what I'm pretty sure are overheating issues. It's generally hot, and has a jittery, stuttery performance when gaming. I cleaned out the fans, but that didn't solve the issue. I'm looking at the heatsink and thermal paste, but am unsure how best to figure out what the issue is. Does anyone have any suggestions on how best to diagnose the issue and figure out what needs fixing? Thank you!

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuu.....

:C

Box and packaging look fine so not sure wtf happened here unless USPS dropped it perfectly on its side and the inertia inside the box bent the fins...

The box they shipped the mainboard in is way too big and only had some crumpled up paper as packing material that did nothing. Mainboard package itself was free to slide around so guessing that it got pinballed around inside the box while USPS played hot potato or something.

Question Privacy Screen Damage Concerns

I am looking for feedback from people who have installed any of the recommended privacy screens/films on their 13. Bonus points if it is a 13pro. I have ordered a 13 pro and am considering installing a privacy screen. I am a big fan of the filtered screens for a wide range of reasons. That being said, I have had some laptops where the additional screens have worked perfectly without issue, and others where the additional film has caused the keyboard to leave permanent damage and rub against the screen. I have already thumbed through other posts and see lots of opinions and speculation, but not a lot on actual user experience and outcomes.

Would love to hear from folk who have actively installed such a screen or film, and have used it over a sufficient amount of time to provide a reliable user experience and damage report.

Thank you all, and happy Frameworking!

edit: typo

Linux FW 13 Pro - Ubuntu - Sleep issues ?

I'll be receiving my FW13 Pro next week and I plan to install Ubuntu on it (most likely 26.10).

Currently I have a Dell XPS 13 Plus from 2022 and I very frequently run into suspend / resume issues. This has been the case on 24.04, 26.04, and 26.10.

Is there a risk I'll have the same problem with my Framework?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Community Support Framework Laptop 16 HDMI Expansion Card Not Always Outputting Display

I have been trying to use the hdmi card with my Laptop 16 however occasionally my display and audio output will get trapped in the hdmi card and not go through the hdmi cable. Ive been able to fix this issue either by reseating the card, or waiting a few seconds, but this has only been a temporary fix so far.

I am on the latest BIOS and driver versions(from the Framework driver bundle, the amd driver bundle, and nvidia drivers) and the hdmi card is always shown as connected in device manager- do you guys know any ways to fix this?

Display Specs if that matters-
Ryzen ai 9
Nvidia 5070
Expansion card on port 4(i have tried using port 5 as well but have gotten the same issue)
Windows 11, version 25H2

Question Looking for performance check of Framework 13 pro with X7 and X9 intel CPU.

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi! I'm interested in the framework 13 pro for a lot of reasons. I would like to check what kind of performance the intel chip X7 or /and X9 with B390 graphic would provide for Onshape.

If someone with this configuration could go to the Onshape check benchmark on the web cad.onshape.com/check and give me the results either by posting a print screen of the page or only the Measured triangle per second and Measured lines per second that would be really helpful. The test takes about 2 minutes max.

I would probably use it with windows but I don't mind if you run the test on Linux. Just know that Firefox, Edge, Chrome and Safari are the supported browser.

Thanks in advance.

Framework Photo Greetings from France 🇫🇷

Hey everyone,

Just got my Framework 13 DIY (AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370) in hand and had to share a quick appreciation post!

Honestly, calling this a "DIY build" feels almost like a stretch—it’s ridiculously straightforward.
Since the main assembly is already done, it was pretty much just:

  • Popping in the RAM & NVMe
  • Snapping on the bezel
  • Clicking in the expansion modules
  • Slap on the keyboard/top cover and stickers!

I've built plenty of PCs over the years, and as an avid Linus Tech Tips watcher, I was expecting at least a bit of standard screen cable fiddling or tight routing headaches. Nope! Nothing. It was legitimately easier than building a desktop—no cable management nightmares, no motherboard wrestling, and the chassis build quality feels super solid.

Linux worked 100% out of the box, and the BIOS settings are refreshingly clean.

Just two minor things left on my post-install checklist:

  1. The audio: Sounds a bit thin on default settings. Time to dive into some EQ tweaking.
  2. Battery management: Looking for a nice, simple GUI tool under Linux to handle charge thresholds and power profiles without living in the terminal.

Overall, absolutely loving the machine so far. Huge props to the Framework team for making hardware fun again!

Cheers from France! 🍷💻

Udpates:
I installed Easy Effects
https://flathub.org/en/apps/com.github.wwmm.easyeffects
with this profile
https://gist.github.com/hegocre/fea11a58e47a445d0b470f377cfaa655
and the sound is alredy much better

I also deployed Framwork Control
https://ozturkkl.github.io/framework-control/
great for adjusting and monitoring battery/power/fan

Feedback Experience with FW13Pro Ryzen AI 9 370

Post image
201 Upvotes

I've been replacing Mac with FW13P for almost 3 weeks now. So far, all experiences are very positive, love the build quality. Battery is acceptable but not as good as the Mac at least for the AMD version I owned (can't wait to try Intel). Track pad is great, I configured the haptic feedback to max. And for the touch screen, I disabled it since I can't find myself using it in any of my use case or workflow. Speaker might be the only hardware, I would complain (try to tweak it with software but so far no luck on getting what I want, I'm so uneducated on the equalizer).

I use Fedora as my main OS and the only thing I still struggle with would be key binding. I won't remap the key yet and see how long I'm gonna get used to it. I never log back directly to Mac except over remote sometime to allow permission. My Mac right now only exists to build iOS & Mac app (sometimes Android app). Fingerprint sometimes does not work when wake from lid open (not sure if it is my configuration issues or someone also experiencing this).

P.S. don't mind my desk and Mac Book.😆😆😆

Question Is Framework 13 genuinely worth it right now?

I’ve been searching for a laptop for uni, a one that could last at least 5 years.
Is the FW13 worth the price?
I’ve been considering the one with Ryzen AI 5 340, 2x16 DDR5, the price is ~1750€.
Could a ThinkPad be a better choice? Could it offer better value for money?
I mainly use linux (Ubuntu-based distros) and well working suspend/hibernation is important. Also the actual repairability.
Would appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who have used both Framework and the ThinkPads.

Feedback Touchpad buttons are the only reason i cant buy framework.

Using my left thumb on the touchpad buttons above with my right index for the pointer is so comfortable, accurate, and fast. I can never go back to a button-less touchpad. Been legit waiting for years on a module with buttons.

Using tape is nothing like a button. Double tap to drag sucks and constantly triggers when i dont want it to (i tap fast during use). I cant play any fps games without buttons, and its just terrible to use. WHY did consumers put up with letting manufacturers remove this???

Please framework, do a survey or something to prove its a worthwhile endeavor. Im begging you.

Edit: for those focusing on me playing FPS games on a touchpad. There is a reason the Steam Controller, Steam Controller 2, and Steam Deck all have touchpads for aiming. It is totally viable and on par with a mouse if you have a seperate button to left-click.

Question Screwing Framework Desktop underneath the desk, anyone done it?

I found this, wondering how safe it is and if anyone tried it https://www.printables.com/model/1562218-framework-desktop-under-desk-mount

Any other way to safely put the desktop underneath the desk? I know it’s beautiful and all but I like a clutter free desk.

Linux How is CachyOS on a 13"?

Good day all,
A friend of mine has offered me their 2023 13" (unsure of the CPU at the moment). I am planning on installing CachyOS on it, and wanted to ask if folks here have run into any issues with running that distro?

Mainly curious if there were any general hardware issues I should be aware of.

Question Note taking on the FW 13 pro

Hi people! I started University of software engineering and I needed an upgrade from my vivobook 15 so I pre ordered an fw 13 pro with the amd AI 7 350 32gb ram and 1tb storage. But I do not have anymore budget for a tablet and I need this config for the laptop.

Now my question is: Is there any software that can make the touch screen of the fw 13 pro viable to notes taking!

I'm aware of the flimbyness of the bezel and I think i will find a way around it. I just want to know if there is some sort of software that does that.

Edit: thank you for all your help!! I decided that I will stick with the F13P and take notes with pen and paper :))

Question Getting a new laptop, no clue what best fits my needs

hello, I posted elsewhere for suggestions and got advised to look here. The full post should be on my account but in short:

I'm looking for a ~$2,000 laptop to replace my last one (I'd prefer to no go over $2,500, but if it happens it happens). At minimum it needs to perform well in classes (and hopefully well into my career), as well as have good storage to hold work. I like playing games in my off time, but as it's not my focus I do not expect to go all out for it. Really if it can play something like Minecraft or Fortnite without issue I would have no complaints.

Problem is I don't know a thing about specs or assembly. What would people here recommend as a first-timer?
