Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.

Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!

It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!

Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)

From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

200 miles into the rebuild, OHV showing its superiority

I recently posted about having completed rebuilt this truck, and after about 200 miles of great driving, it failed and it wouldn’t start on the side of the road. It was spinning with no resistance from cylinder compression so I was assuming the worst at first (piston ring failure) but after diagnosing it I found that one of my timing components failed. The key on the sprocket that meshes with the camshaft decided to shear off. Where the OHV shines is the fact that this version of the motor is non-interference engine, so with this failure my valves and pistons did not kiss!

First ranger please help! 93 Ranger with mysterious sound

I just got my first ford ranger off Facebook marketplace and it has been making a weird sound that I can’t quite pin down, for context it’s the 4.0 litre V6 engine, the noise doesn’t happen when it’s at a standstill and tends to show up only after it’s been driven a couple of minutes, the sound quiets down a bit when slowing and gets louder with acceleration. This also seems to be someone’s old project truck before me or the previous owner so I’m not sure if that could have something to do with it. Thank you guys for the help in advance!!

I paid $500 for it, 80k miles, 2.3, auto trans.
Some dumbass pulled out in front of me and killed my 97. And on top of that, dude I hit was uninsured but it was his fault, had no license, but GSP didn’t lock him up🙄. Anyways, just wanted to post some ranger stuff

2019 Front USB ports not working

Hi, I recently acquired a used 2019 Ford Ranger! Absolutely loving it so far, the only issue I’ve found is the front USB ports don’t work. Bluetooth is fine, and the rear ones are fine for charging. But trying to use the front ones to charge/use CarPlay just doesn’t work. I’ve tried different cables, even bought a brand new one that I made sure could do data transfer. I’ve tried doing the master reset in settings, as well as holding the power button/next track for a soft reset. I’ve been googling and not found anything that seems to work, any advice? Thanks!

Anybody mount a starlink mini somehow to there ranger? Gonna be buying one for hunting and wanted to see what ideas others have came up with for mounting. I’ve seen the magnetic bases that go on roof but would rather not as I don’t want to scratch the paint. Thanks guys.

Strange sound

1996 2.3 4cyl 5speed mileage unknown, stopped turning at 284,000
I have checked to make sure nothing was loose underneath the truck and it’s nothing in the cup holders. I thought it might be cracked flywheel but then it would happen all the time not just when given gas right?

Oil in airbox! Have tried two new PCV valves, checked for blow by with the oil cap test and dipstick test. Smoke test showed smoke coming out of the front crank seal?

How much would yall pay for this?

I’ve made the hard decision to sell my ranger and I need a lil help pricing it. She’s a 03 2.3l 5 spd manual with absolutely no mechanical issues and a fresh clutch kit installed by a professional shop at 103k, currently at 107k. Most in similar condition in my area are listed for 8-10k, can I get that for mine? The only “flaw” with this truck is that it didn’t come with ac from factory, that’s the only reason I’m selling.

Hum / whistle

• Upvotes

1999 ford ranger 4.0 ohv, 230,000 miles

Has a weird hum / whistle while under load at about 1500-2000 rpm

Doesn't make the sound if in neutral, seems to be load dependent.

Originally thought the noise was my throttle body because I generally heard it coming from the engine bay while driving, but one day I had the back window open and you could hear it way louder, so assuming it is not from the engine.

the sound is similar to IAC hum that the truck had at idle a few months ago. A new IAC valve fixed that. (that issue sounded just like this (this post is not me) What is that noise? 99 xlt : r/fordranger)

Any reason I shouldn't trim the windage tray while I'm here?

99 3.0 4x4. Can I just trim enough that the pan will slip on/off without the pickup and tray interfering? Just the ears where the bare metal is.

It's not like it's going to cause any issue with aeration or something, right? I was thinking I could probably get the pan off without picking up the engine so much, and get it back on without fighting the gasket as much

So it goes

A rag got sucked inside of the cylinder through my intake manifold. I need a new engine because a new head and all the parts to replace it would cost the same if not more than a used or even a reman engine. It’s been a good run and I need a new car

2003 Ford Ranger 3.0 v6 issues after pcv replacement

Really lost on this truck

I have a 2003 Ford Ranger 3.0 v6

I have just replaced the pcv, but after doing so my issues seem to be worse. The truck will start however it’s idling okayish better than before but still rough. The truck is extremely sluggish and will not go over 3k rpm’s and really struggles to get past 45mph. I have discovered there is a bubbling (not boiling) coming from the coolant reservoir and after shutting off it’s till bubbling and making a “gulping” like noise. I did put a scanner on it and got p0171 however I did not see any vacuum leaks, and the truck will not stay running long enough for it to check the 02 and catalytic. I have absolutely no idea what to do next and I cannot find anything useful on the internet. Has anyone had this issue before?

Also the oil is not milky..
