Ford Ranger Buyers Guide; v4!

Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.

Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!

It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!

Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)

From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

First posted about this beauty a couple of months ago when I got it

Havnt done as much work as I would have liked to so far, but have got a fair amount done to it.

New wheels and tires- the old ones were beat and ugly

Oil and transmission fluid changes

Put a thermostat in it (the fucking housing was empty- zero thermostat)

Bled the power steering system (did not help)

Removed the rear bumped (which was a cut up fleetside bumper)

Replaced the bashed in tailgate

Diagnosed and fixed a few small issues with it that were causing noises while driving

Replaced the grill and re-adjusted the header panel

Completely cleaned out the interior and gutted the carpets because it smelled so bad- its gonna need new seats too due to the stench (smelly florida people are smelly)

My DIY magsafe phone holder

I had the kind of phone holder that clamps onto the vents(you can see the broken ones in second pic) and it kept breaking off so I made use of the fake vent slats to the left of the real vent, with a few metal document clips and some adhesive I now have a easy phone holder that hopefully will pull off before it breaks this old brittle plastic

Update on daughters first truck

I posted a little while ago and had just bought my daughters first truck (she's 15). I bought it for $300 with the knowledge of it sitting in someone's yard for 9+ years . Figured what the hell whats the worst that could happen i gotta put a motor in it or gas tank 🤔

Well I'm glad...no ecstatic to report WE GOTTA RUNNER!! no need for a motor just all the essentials and fresh gas.

It's running a little rough but hell you would to after that long of a nap lol. Next up new front suspension and brakes.

I've already got the king ranch interior sorted so once its mechanically sound we will start making it pretty.

2000 Ford ranger XLT 4.0 auto with 4x4 and 153k original miles. runs and drives good, no body rust and only some surface frame rust. there is a few small dents between the tailgate and a couple hail dents on the hood, but other wise the paint looks great(original paint). this truck is my buddies grandpas truck, it’s been driven and babied for a majority of its life. he wants $7000 for it, i feel right paying $6,500 for it. Thoughts?

Been a project for years and it blew a guide in June so I just don't have it in me to finish the job

Done a lot of rust repair, everything but the axle is new behind the cab

So if anyone in central new england is looking for either an alright project or a pretty decent parts truck I've got one

2010 4.0 4x4 manual 175k, has the rear discs and I've got a handful of extra parts like an instrument panel, headlights and taillights and shit

Idk how much I want but if you're interested shoot me a DM and we can discuss it, id love to not send it off to the great graveyard in the sky

Rough shaking

Hey again ya'll! I've noticed my 1999 Mazda B2500 SE doing something weird when I drive it. There was a certain spot in the highway on my way home from work that has some quick acceleration and then some stops. There was one area that whenever I got to it, my truck would start to sound rough and I could feel some shaking.

I had time this weekend so I got to testing it in my driveway. Not always, but a lot of the time, when I rev up above 3000 RPMs and then let it suddenly drop back to below 1000 RPMs, the truck shakes. That is the specific trigger condition I've been able to recreate. I did some reading and saw a lot of different suggestions on what this could be.

I did a "power brake test" (go into drive, hold the gas down, rev up to about 1.5k, watch engine to see if it bucks or shakes) and my motor mounts seem fine. I'm not an expert though.

Have any of you had similar issues? If so, what did it turn out to be?

For sale / trade

I’m getting ready to list my 1985 Ford Ranger Scamp Mini Motorhome for sale and wanted to post here first. If you like the Toyota Sunraiders but prefer American made, this is the one.

This is a running and driving project truck located just west of Denver, Colorado. 5 digit odometer reading just under 68k. Clear Colorado title - odometer listed as exempt.

I replaced the fuel pump, spark plugs, heater motor, bumper, and a few vacuum lines to get it going. Now it needs floor pans and I honestly don’t have the skills to take it to 100%. I’d like to keep the winch but we can negotiate.

Listing for $6,000. Open to offers and trades. Rangers, roadsters, camping trailers, boats, jet skis, quads, over unders, motorcycles - pretty much anything fun. Shoot me a message if you’re interested.

Will be listed on Marketplace by the end of the weekend. Don’t miss your chance to own one of the coolest Rangers ever made.

The subframe for my spare tire for my 2003 ford ranger rusted out and smashed up this hose connector falling off and I’m not sure what the name of the part is to look it up. Any help on getting the name of the correct part and the correct subframe hanger part as well while I’m at it would be greatly appreciated thanks!

1996 ranger 2.3 idle/start issues

I have a 1996 ford ranger xlt 2.3 that I recently did all the timing belt stuff and a new serpentine belt. When I got the truck it came with skipped timing. I put the timing and all the new stuff on including a new idle air control valve but now when I start the truck it starts and then has a rough idle at 2k rpm for about 30 seconds then shuts off and won’t start for about an hour or so. Anyone know how to fix this/ what the issue is

I need advice on fixing these wires

Hello All! I bought a 1994 Ranger back in August. It came with some aftermarket headlights that I really don't like so I'm installing new OEM lights back on it.

Problem is, these old aftermarket lights had little LED accent lights that came on with the running lights. They used these blue splice things to cut into the side light harness to power the accent lights. They leave these deep nicks in the wire and I dont want anything to short out.

With it being on the side light harness, I can't slide heat shrink over the wires, and i know electrical tape just becomes a sticky nasty mess on vehicles.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Is my best course of action just to cut and strip the wires, then use a solder heat shrink splice?

Is this it for the engine?

There’s a check engine light and low oil pressure light, and it’s running pretty rough, shaking the truck. It gets worse with more gas applied so from everything I’ve read it seems like a bearing failure in the engine, I haven’t really driven it because of the low oil pressure. Is there anyone here that had a similar issue that can confirm that’s what’s happening?

My Ranger restoration

Well I finally have my Ranger back together. It has been a 6 month process but what started out as tracing down why my passenger floor board was getting wet quickly lead to well while the glass is out😂. I completely stripped the truck down. Removed the bed. Coated the rear section of frame. Cleaned and coated the floor. Fixed some rust on the inside of the bed. Coated the bottom of the bed. New tailgate. New tail lights. New windshield. New back glass. Chroma base factory base/clear paint job. Lots of new parts can’t remember them all at this point. Just got the bed professionally lined yesterday. Here are a bunch of pictures throughout the process and the finished product at the end. Enjoy.
