TL;DR: Returning after a few years away, mostly solo player, level 177. Looking for a decent non-Power-Armour build that can handle endgame content. Currently considering full-health Commando but open to suggestions.
So, I've recently come back to FO76 after being away for quite a while and I'm trying to get my head around everything that's changed.
I originally played from around 2018–2022, mostly solo, and never really got into how groups and public teams worked. I did jump back in briefly when the new Vault content dropped, but got my arse handed to me and ended up giving up again.
When I stopped playing regularly, I'd hit a bit of a wall with the quests down in the Cranberry Bog. I've never launched a nuke, and I'm still trying to work my way through that part of the game.
One thing I've never really liked is Power Armour. Partly because I can't be bothered constantly finding fusion cores (yes, I know there are ways around that), but also because I've always felt that everyone running around in Power Armour is a bit lore-breaking. In my head, Power Armour was always supposed to be relatively rare military equipment, not something every second person in the wasteland has. I know it's a game, but it's one of those things that's always bothered me a little.
Anyway, I was originally thinking of going with a shotgun build, but after doing a bit of digging and bouncing some ideas around I'm now looking at a full-health stealth/VATS Commando build instead.
The general idea is:
- Automatic Fixer as my main weapon
- Quad Handmade as a backup
- Full health, regular armour, no Power Armour
- Focus on VATS, critical hits, stealth and survivability
- Eventually work towards Secret Service armour
I've already got a few Fixers, a Quad Handmade and a collection of other legendary weapons sitting in my stash, so it'd be nice to make use of some of them rather than starting from scratch.
As for what I actually want to do, I'd like to be able to hold my own in most situations. Ideally, I'd like a build that could solo the Scorchbeast Queen if I really wanted to, although let's face it, that's probably more fun with a group.
I'd also like to start exploring some of the newer content. There's the new Vault stuff, The Pitt (which I haven't been anywhere near since FO3), and a whole bunch of quests and areas that simply didn't exist when I last played.
I'm not really interested in squeezing every last point of damage out of the game, but I'd like to get to the point where I can wander around, do quests and take on some of the harder content without constantly getting my arse handed to me.
So I guess my questions are:
- Is a full-health Commando build still a decent way to go these days?
- Are there better options for someone at my level who doesn't want to use Power Armour or should I just give in?
- Is there anything obviously wrong with the proposed build, particularly with all the perk changes since I last played?
- And while I'm at it, is there anything I should know about public teams and group content these days?
I'm not married to the Commando idea. If a shotgun build or something completely different makes more sense, I'm happy to hear it.
I figured I'd ask people who are actually playing the game regularly before I start messing around with my SPECIAL points and perk cards.
Thanks for making it this far through my ramblings :)
Alo, before you ask how I got to 177 without doing the Cranberry Bog... well... I liked building.
