How I fixed the lag, bloat, and ads on my Fire TV Stick using ADB (No root, no custom launcher flicker, 100% reversible) + Open-source toolkit
Hey everyone,
If you’ve used a Fire TV Stick (especially the 1GB RAM models like the 3rd Gen or Lite), you know how sluggish they get over time. Out of the box, Fire OS chokes the 1GB RAM with background telemetry, loud home screen video trailer autoplays, and suspended streaming apps that never release their memory.
Most debloat guides recommend replacing the launcher with an accessibility remapper, but on Fire OS 7, every time you hit the Home button, it flashes the Amazon home screen for half a second before redirecting. It felt clunky, so I took a different approach using Linux + ADB.
Here is the setup, what we fixed, and the open-source toolkit and AI prompt so you can do it too.
📊 The Before vs. After Results
| Metric | Factory State | After Optimization |
|---|---|---|
| Available Storage | 1.0 GB Free (79% Full) | 2.4 GB Free (50% Full — +1.4 GB reclaimed) |
| ZRAM Swap Pressure | ~222 MB compressed swap | ~180 MB (reclaimed ~40 MB RAM) |
| Streaming Apps in RAM | Hotstar/Netflix held 160MB+ in background | RUN_IN_BACKGROUND: ignore (RAM freed immediately on exit) |
| Home Carousel Video/Audio | Blasting loud video ads on hover | Completely Silenced & Static |
| Motion Cadence | Fixed 60 Hz (3:2 pulldown judder) | Match Original Frame Rate (24.0 / 23.976 fps) |
| Ad / Tracker Blocking | Active ACR screen-fingerprinting | AdGuard Private DNS Active (127.0.0.1 sinkhole) |
| Launcher | Heavy & sluggish | Native Stock Launcher (Zero Bounce, Instant Home) |
🛠️ What Was Done (Rootless & Reversible)
- Purged Cache & Bloat Games:
- Used
pm trim-caches 2Gto purge ~700 MB of stale buffer and thumbnail junk without logging out of any apps. - Removed pre-installed trial games sitting in
/data/app(reclaimed 533 MB physical flash storage).
- Used
- Killed On-Screen Tracking & Advertising ID:
- Disabled
com.amazon.tv.acr(Automated Content Recognition that fingerprints what's playing on your screen to report viewing habits). - Disabled
com.amazon.hybridadidservice(cross-app advertising ID). - Configured AdGuard Private DNS (
dns.adguard.com) via Android's native DNS-over-TLS settings.
- Disabled
- AppOps Background Lockdown:
- Fire OS allows closed streaming apps to sit in memory. Running
cmd appops set <pkg> RUN_IN_BACKGROUND ignoreensures that apps like Hotstar, Netflix, or Crunchyroll run at 100% full speed when you're watching them, but are immediately suspended the second you exit to the home screen.
- Fire OS allows closed streaming apps to sit in memory. Running
- Silenced the Home Screen:
- Set
auto_play_video 0andauto_play_audio 0so the top banner stays quiet and stops spinning up hardware video decoders while navigating menus.
- Set
- Cinema 24p Frame Rate Matching:
- Set
match_content_frame_rate 1so Prime Video and compatible players switch your TV panel to 24 Hz, eliminating motion judder.
- Set
📦 Open-Source Toolkit & Reusable AI Prompt
I put together a clean, sanitized GitHub repository with:
- All the individual, parameterized shell scripts (
1_debloat_packages.sh,2_enable_adblock.sh,4_anti_lag_tuning.sh,restore_all.sh). - An
AGENT_PROMPT.mdfile that you can copy-paste straight into Claude, Antigravity, ChatGPT, or Cursor to let an AI agent safely execute this entire multi-phase workflow over ADB for you with safety stops. - Zero personal information or hardcoded IPs.
GitHub Repository: https://github.com/roy9611/firetv-safe-debloat
Every change uses pm disable-user --user 0, so if you ever want to revert back to factory default, running the restore script brings everything back immediately.
Hope this helps anyone struggling with a laggy Fire Stick! Happy to answer questions about specific packages or settings.
