State of the Subreddit & Seeking Volunteers For Wiki Creation
What's up team I totally forgot I added "user flair" to the subreddit months ago- lemme know if y'all have any suggestions but I feel like I came up with alright ideas
I have enabled an auto mod for all "How do I dye this" posts, it reads as follows:
Our wiki is currently under construction however: there's a good chance your question has been answered in a previous post. If you are dyeing cellulose fibres (cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, flax, nettle, rayon, bamboo, tencel, plants generally, etc.), you will need a fiber reactive dye.
If you are dyeing a protein fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, Angora, mohair, feathers, animal stuff generally, etc.), you will need an acid dye.
Leather is dyed with leather specific dyes such as those from Angelus.
Silk will dye with either acid or fiber reactive dyes but will yield different results depending on which you use.
Polyester can sometimes be dyed. It can only be dyed with synthetic specific dyes such as iDye Poly or RIT Dyemore. It usually cannot achieve a dark or rich colour at home. Acrylic usually cannot be dyed at all.
I've had "post guidance" enabled: reddit seems to have changed what can and cannot be done via auto mod. So I can't auto delete posts that mention specific topics, however I've had these pop up messages for common topics that give basic advice/wisdom before users posts.
Piggybacking off that, I can't set a limit manually to filter low karma users or new accounts but I have turned on Reddits "crowd control" and "reputation" filters
Previously, people have offered to help write our wiki. Would people still be interested in doing that?

How do I dye this? Halloween And Costumes Megathread 2026
Please post all Halloween and Costume Related Posts here from 9/25-11/1
Please post fiber content, inspo picture, and what you’re trying to dye. Without fiber content we don’t know what dyes work. Without an inspo picture we don’t know what you’re talking about. Without a picture of what you’re trying to dye we can’t give realistic expectations.

General question How to remove red dye from pants
The power went out when my clothes were in the middle of being washed, so they sat in the washer for a few hours while soaking wet. This caused some of the dye from a pair of red socks to bleed into my pants (100% cotton) and I ran them through the dryer before I realized. how can I remove the dye?

How do I dye this? Hello! Do yall think I could get this jacket to be a dark brown, and if so, how? I’m also hoping that the flannel lining will also be a darker more uniform color. The garment is 100% cotton:

General question What Colour Should I Dye This?
galleryHi all! My first time posting in this community. I foolishly washed this sweater with another wool sweater (blue) and left blue dye spots in a few places. I spent the following week trying to remove with them with Moss Messy Mouth’s stain remover. And although it removed the stains, it also caused the red dye in my sweater to bleed (looks worse in person).
My understanding is that there is no saving the runs and I was thinking about dying it to save my sweater. I was thinking brown, but I read I have to use green dye to turn red brown?
I’m looking for any thoughts/suggestions for colours & dye tips! TIA!!
P.s it’s 100% extra fine merino wool.

How do I dye this? Color Too Vibrant, Can It Be Fixed?
galleryI was so worried about the color not turning out on this 100% cotton shirt (originally white) that I did every trick I could to make sure the dye would be as bold as possible (a cup of salt, stovetop method, Ritdye fixative, etc). I fear I may have shot myself in the foot here because it actually turned out MORE vibrant than I wanted.
Is there any way to lighten the color somewhat? The second pic is my goal color (the undershirt).
Do I need to buy another shirt and try again? If so, how should I do things differently to get the right color this time?
It is less turquoise and more blue in person, I used the powder puff blue formula from RitDye.com and only their products. The true color is closer to how it looks in the shade of this photo, not the direct light. My lights washed it out a little.

How do I dye this? Did I use the right dye? 🖤🫧
galleryI had a navy sweater that got some bleach stains on it. I bought another one as a replacement and thought, maybe I can dye the old one black, so I’ll have two sweaters.
The sweater is
40% Viscose/ Rayon
30% Nylon
27% Polyester
3% Cashmere
I dyed it in 140 degree water for 60 minutes with Rit All Purpose Black Dye and then used the Color Stay for 20 mins after and washed in cold water separately.
While it definitely is darker, it’s not a true black to me, more a deep midnight navy color. Did I use the right products and should do it again, maybe with two bottles of dye? Should I try Rit Synthetic Dye?
For reference the original sweater color (the replacement) is on the left, the newly dyed sweater is in the middle, and a true black sweater is on the right.
As seen in the third photo, it’s not a true deep black.
Did I use the right products? Should do it again, maybe with two bottles of dye? Should I try Rit Synthetic dye instead?
I don’t mind experimenting for darker since I already have a backup, but I would obviously not like to damage it if possible.
Thanks!

General question Trying to go for foxy red
I got this pirate costume and the shirt is 100% polyester and was originally a beige color.
I got racing red and chocolate brown rit dye, used the whole bottle of red and a splash of the brown and this is how the top turned out :/ i had it in a big pot at the right temperature for about 45 minutes.
now… i’m assuming adding another bottle of red isn’t really going to do anything (unless you guys think it will) so i’m wondering what can i do to make this shirt a brighter, foxy (from fnaf) red? i don’t know how i feel about fabric paint since i don’t want the shirt to be crunchy and hard. Also, yes, the shirt said to wash on cold.
i almost wish i would’ve just left it alone :’) but i want to channel foxy as much as possible and i feel too much like im just a pirate when the shirt is just beige. (my skirt and corset is brown)
if there’s nothing i can do im just gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a separate shirt that will be the color i want

General question Pot Safety Question
Hi! I have a quick question about if my pot is still safe.
I am working on a project that involves Rit dye. I have been boiling water in my stainless steel pot and then transferring the hot water to a separate plastic tub where I add the dye. I dyed my fabric yellow, rinsed out the plastic tub and started boiling more water in the stainless steel pot for a batch of green.
I poured new water into the plastic tub (which I noted still had a little yellow in it). I realized I wasn't ready yet so I poured it back into my stainless steel pot. I realized I probably shouldn't have done that that so I poured the water out after a couple seconds and rinsed the pot out. Is the stainless steel pot unsafe now or am I being paranoid?
Thank you!

How do I dye this? Dying denim with Rit all purpose - do you NEED the fixative? What have I done wrong?
I have a denim jacket 76% cotton and 23% lyocell blend. I checked and supposedly Rit all purpose is fine with lyocell since it's plant based but...well.
I have dyed it using the bucket method(I'm not buying a new pot, no charity shops have one big enough) , ombre black/fuchsia. I have done this with two other jackets with the same dye, the same method (with different % cotton TBF) and both are fine.
This is not taking. When it's dry, it looks the way I want. But when I so much as rinse it, I can see the dye coming out.
I followed the instructions to use soap and salt, as hot water as I can manage so what have I done wrong?
Do I NEED the fixative? Did I maybe just not leave it long enough? Or hot enough? Should I have also used vinegar? Can I use fixative now, at this point, or should I try to strip the dye and start again? Why is this one jacket bullying me 😂

General question Dylon washing machine coffee dye left purple lines all over my white jumper – what are these and how do I get rid of them?
galleryHey everyone,
I dyed a white cotton jumper using Dylon machine dye in the “Coffee” shade following the instructions. The overall colour came out okay (a soft brown), but there are weird purple/lilac lines and blotches all over it – some look like streaks, others more like irregular marks.
I’ve attached photos so you can see what I mean.
Has anyone else had this happen with Dylon coffee (or any of their machine dyes)? What causes these purple marks, and is there a way to remove or tone them down without ruining the rest of the colour?
Any tips would be really appreciated!

How do I dye this? Seeking advice on desired color
I attempted to dye a dress of mine a chartreuse color and it unfortunately turned out very lime green (Bottom fabric in case it wasn’t obvious). Any advice on how I could get the dress closer to the top fabric color?
Dress is 100% cotton.

How do I dye this? Advice for tiedye-ing denim jackets?
I have used Rit All-Purpose dye to good effect on denim jackets (specifically the X-Ray Indigo Denim Jacket, which is 2 percent Spandex). Because I use blue jackets that are already colored, I get a nice gradient out of it (currently a green one using green dye and a purple one using wine-colored dye).
However, looking to get into fiber reactive dye since it's supposed to be better and more permanent. Considering trying to use Turquoise Dye (maybe from Dharma?) on an X-Ray Indigo Denim Jacket.
But any advice for this sort of thing? Down the road, I could see myself trying to manage some of the cool tiedye designs folks have, except on a denim jacket. Ice dyeing looks intriguing.
Advice on blogs or YouTube channels that focus on dyeing denim would also be great. Thank you!

General question Tiny Rit dye drops on cotton sweater, will they come off without color remover?
At work I got a bunch of tiny all-purpose dye droplets on the hand cuff of my cotton sweater. The dye/water was cold and I washed the spot in the sink with soap immediately after. Do I have any chance of not resorting to color remover? Do you think it will come out in the wash? I don't want to lock the dye in on accident. The spots aren't super noticeable, but it bothers me that they're there haha. Thank you!

How do I dye this? natural dyes that wont transfer color
I knit 100% cotton scarf, and think it would look better if it was light yellow or green. I wanted to dye it with turmeric, but worry about it turning my clothes yellow if i get rained on while wearing it. What dyes or techniques do yall suggest? I am open to using synthetic dyes, just prefer natural because i think the chemistry of it is neat.

How do I dye this? 100% cotton denim from blue to black?
fabric is 100% cotton denim. I'm looking to make it as black as possible. no fancy washed look or the dye or anything. just all black. i'd assume I could just add black dye to it and be fine but I'm not completely sure. I also have the rit color remover but I've heard mixed things about what that does to indigo dyed fabrics.
I plan to dye it in the washing machine so it can be dyed at a high temperature for a long time. the stove isn't an option this time because it's 3 whole yards of fabric
