Hi everyone!
Recently, we’ve noticed more people using “Malfoid” to refer to a female version of Draco Malfoy. We’ve also realized that some people genuinely have no idea where the word comes from or why it’s offensive. So we wanted to explain.
Where does “foid” come from?
“Foid” is short for “femoid,” a derogatory term used in incel communities. It’s derived from “female” and “humanoid,” and is used to describe women as something less than fully human.
It’s a form of dehumanization, rooted in online communities where misogyny and hostility toward women are normalized.
This is well documented. One peer-reviewed study examining incel forums between 2017 and 2021 identified over 250,000 uses of variations of “foid.” The term is closely associated with communities that degrade women and, in some cases, justify violence against them.
So what does this have to do with Draco?
“Malfoid” combines “Malfoy” with “foid.” The nickname became popular alongside fan art of a female Draco. We genuinely believe many people picked it up through memes without knowing what it meant. Internet jokes spread quickly, and we rarely investigate every word we encounter.
But words carry meanings, even when we’re unaware of them. Using “foid” casually helps normalize language originally intended to dehumanize women.
There’s room for creative interpretations of characters in fandom, including gender-swapping. Our concern here is specifically with the terminology being used.
What does this mean for [r/Drarry](r/Drarry)?
From now on, “Malfoid” and all derogatory “-foid” derivatives will be removed from the subreddit, including their use in jokes and memes.
Using a word without knowing its origins doesn’t automatically make someone misogynistic. Some people know exactly what they’re saying, while others are hearing about this for the first time. We think it’s worth giving people the opportunity to learn.
Good-faith educational discussions about these terms are still welcome. If your content is removed and you have questions, you can contact us through modmail. Fandoms create and borrow language all the time. Sometimes we learn where that language comes from only after we’ve started using it. We hope this helps explain our decision, and we welcome thoughtful questions and discussion.
From now on, “Malfoid” and other derogatory “-foid” derivatives fall under our rule against misogynistic and dehumanizing language. Using these terms as nicknames or jokes helps normalize language originally intended to degrade women.
We also recognize that people sometimes mention these words specifically to criticize them. Automated moderation may remove those comments too, even when the intention is to challenge misogyny. Good-faith educational and critical discussions remain welcome, and anyone whose comment is removed in that context can contact us through modmail for review.
